Edit: Oh I misread your post; the free slot was added to all accounts that were created before January 23rd 2015, before which accounts are considered as being a “veteran”. They are given out in weekly batches every Friday, but some note that it took up to 10 days for their slot to appear.

(Old post: I presume the “special anniversary gift” was the Royal Guard Outfit.

Of course, you could also consider they were talking about the 3-year birthday box.)

PR speak for you got one when your bought the HoT expansion after the uproar. Then it was “given” for “free”.

No, after they faced quite a kittenstorm about their pricing model of HoT they “generously” gave people who pre-purchased HoT that free character slot. If you decided not to pre-purchase, no free character slot.

unless I’m confused or something – free character slot is only given to people buying specific editions of expansion. becasue I don’t have any free character slots either, and I’ve been playing on and off since early access.

If your account was made before January 23 (give or take a day or two) of this year, you would get a free character slot IF you pre-purchased HoT (any version of it). So, they basically just worded that badly.

A bad wording that to a surprising extent displays ANet in a favorable light compared to what really happend. If I were a bad person I’d even suspect that wording was deliberate
