This game once you have done the basics is becoming a GRIND FEST
I’ll just drop this here.
I’ve never had to grind and I’ve been playing since August (or April 2012 if you count BWE).
It depends how you play the game. To complete the kill 300 holographic dragon minions, for example, some people rush through, farming the holograms and speeding around the map to kill that many. Why? I honestly don’t know why they want to do things so fast. I’ll be happy even if I never complete that achievement, which I’m not even halfway to completing.
People complaining about grind tend to be (but not always) people who are grinding through the game. I’ve never had to grind in the game and nobody else does either, but some choose to go through content quickly for the fastest rewards and end up finding that the game does not reward that play style.
The game has always had “Kill X creatures” for achievement points, since day 1. This is no different. I don’t need to do it to get the dragon wings, which I don’t really want too much anyways.
If you choose to grind your way through content, that’s your choice.
INB4 this game isn’t for you
INB4 the manifesto doesn’t matter anymore
INB4 you don’t have to do the event content

What’s the point of this post, and are you attempting to invalidate others’ opinions with it?
And you said you’re too late, but I never said those things ^^
It’s only a grind if you choose to make it one. Some of us are able to play this game normally, and have fun doing so. If we want to grind for gold or achievements, we do so without complaining.
New content that Anet gives us (for free) is in part temporary, and in part permanent. Be thankful you get more stuff to do without any subscription fees.
I think the problem is more that the quests are completely uninspired. They’re calling this content, and it’s boring as hell :P
I LOVE GW. I played GW1 for 5 years and have been playing GW2 since BWE1.
It is just that Anet is spending so much effort on temporary content that if you go away on hols for a wee or 2 you miss. this temp content is exactly what their Manifesto says they do not want to do….SO WHY?
It is because I LOVE this game that I don’t want to see it go this way.
check out the link that was posted after my OP. Then try to truthfully say that Ive got it wrong
I’ll just highlight a few things.
“Most games you go out and you have really fun tasks occasionally that you get to do, and the rest of the game is this boring grind to get to the fun stuff. I swung a sword! I swung a sword again, and hey I swung it again. That’s great! We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2. No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun. We want to change the way people view combat.”
“As a structure the MMO has lost the ability to make the player feel like a hero. Everyone around you is doing the same thing you are doing. The boss you just killed respawns ten minutes later. It doesn’t care that I’m there.”
Lol, just realized I forgot that Mike ’O Brien said in the Manifesto:
“We’ve taken everything you love from GW1 and put it in a persistent world.”
That’s really funny, because they took almost all things from GW1 that I loved, then never used it and made the same mistakes they made in GW1… I personally think that GW2 has almost nothing in common with GW1… It took the lore, and the professions, gave some a new flavor and then built something completely different. Forgetting all the simple things that made GW1 great..

This. The references to GW1 that I can see are: Charr. Norns. Humans. Asura. Tyria.

I think Anet failed at this one^
This game is no grind fest. I come from a game where the only way to really level is to grind and only grind and by grinding I mean kill 10000 mobs just to get a level eventually, and you grind for about 3 months,of hardcore grinding without questing to get max level. Level 80 here is a joke to reach, super easy, and relaxing just do the story and then some, I think it is really nice.

You dont NEED to do anything hence it is not a grind.
If you want to get the wings you can buy them using gems that you can buy at your local store or ingame…no need to grind anything here. You don t have to grind for legendary or exotics, you don t have to grind for anything…you dod what you want and nothing is mandatory.
YOU chose what you want to acquire and how to play the game. What you want to grind or acquire is different from me or anybody else. The content is there for people who want something to do in game. Some see it as grind some like me see it as passing the time.
The problem is that you are doing a single thing many times like the pinatas…don t try to do 50 in a row. Just do 4 or 5 and do something else like a quest etc.
Problem is most of us have already done EVERYTHING else or are sick of WvWvW and PvP in general
My wife has 7 lvl 80’s 6 with 100% map completion…..she was in the top 20 achievement points on Yaks Bend….but now there is just more grind for her to stay there…..She only logs on to do Guild missions and events she is now 62nd on Yaks…She prefers to play mindless Facebook games.
Is this what Anet want us to aspire to??
I want to play GW2 with her and the rest of our Guild.
ANet should make a mission editor/creator. That’s the main draw NWO has for me over this game. I love making adventures and so do a lot of other people. Player generated content = endless, and cost effective. :P

If the only way to avoid grinding is to not participate in content updates, then that means the game is becoming the grindfest. I could use the same logic in any other grinding MMO also and say that I can avoid grinding by not doing anything that involves repetitive tasks, but will I get the rewards associated (anything from experience to loot, to special rewards like the wings)? No, a definitive no.
And the fact of the matter is that no matter if you personally choose to grind achievements or not, the lastest content update is geared towards grinding, and may say something about Anet’s agenda for future updates.

Yes, I guess this thread with over 200 posts must reflect only my opinion…
Oh wait.
And I was mainly talking about QOL stuff.. I mean, the amazing build and combat system of GW1 is not making a return, so much I know, but outside of that, GW2 is missing a LOT of stuff that made GW1 great…

I didn’t say that grinding is the only way to participate in content. I’ve been enjoying dragon bash, I just haven’t needed to grind to do anything. I got a jade ticket a number of knights just from opening normal coffers, and got a normal holographic wing drop. I will have the eight achievements once the story continues tomorrow for the shattered wings. I am thoroughly enjoying the content (in addition to the lovely drops), and still not grinding! Dunno how you’re doing things, but this update certainly doesn’t seem about grind to me.

I’ve enjoyed the story parts, but not the other achievements, I have my wings already, I’ve done the holograms, the fireworks, and the pinatas (and candy eaten but that comes with the other ones already). I found the holograms to be pretty kitten ed grindy, I even had a route mapped out to “maximize” time between projectors, I’ve opened about 400 coffers and have gotten 1 mini risen knight, candy, and fireworks, I have another 100 regular coffers in my inventory I’m contemplating to sell, since RNG dictates I never get a skin anyway.
So yeah, some people may have been able to get some of the better rewards and therefore participate fully in the dragon bash, but some people, like me, can grind their nuts off and still see nothing close to a memento of participation.

Yeah, the holograms are grindy if your goal was to get them done as fast as possible and only focus on that one achievement. I personally haven’t done the hologram achievement because I didn’t find it interesting and also found that I could probably complete the 8 achievements without doing it.
I would’ve been happy without getting the jade weapon or the normal wings, but as you said the RNG is a pain in the neck. RNG is something else entirely, and I agree that something needs to be changed in that department.

My goal was a jade weapon, which would have involved me killing things over and over again for coffers anyway. It has mostly to do with RNG but that’s a different topic.
And in my opinion it would be grindy no matter if i get it done all in one day or if i spread it out over many days, the time i spent killing holograms is still the same, and the task of killing 300 holograms is still the same
(edited by lmaonade.9207)
inb4 anet don’t make grindy games
“press f on this 100 times to win”
“press f on this 50 times while having to run 5 minutes to each one to win”
I actually prefer other grinder game’s kill x mobs collect y items to combine into z rewards system, instead of this run around here press f. The former feels like actual gameplay, while the latter feels like I’m having deja vu, seeing the same scene for hundreds of times.

I love pressing F.

Again, I think we’re agreed on RNG.
Grind tends to be repeating an action over and over until you get the desired result. If you don’t focus on grinding out the mobs, and you just happen to kill 300 while wandering the world, then it’s certainly not grind. Why? Because you didn’t focus on killing holograms over and over again. I got to level 80 in a few months. Others got level 80 in less than a week. Who went through grind? I guarantee that the one who got 80 in less than a week is more likely to have done grind to get there.
The same result does not mean the same action was taken to get there.
Sure you don’t HAVE to do any grindy things, but then what else is there to do when you’ve done everything else? Spreading out 100 pinatas in small episodes doesn’t make it any less grindy. Anything with “Do this x times” is guess what? A grind. I don’t really care since it’s easy to do compared cough legendaries. They probably thought that it wasn’t going against their manifesto because you’re not actually killing the pinatas in actual combat, or are you? That could be subject to another debate. The fact of the matter is they are aware grinding is no fun, but make it a central figure in events as a filler objective. And should you ever want a Legendary, get to grinding.

Only a grind if you are impatient. You have an entire month to do them so you don’t need to do them the day they are released.
Only a grind if you are impatient. You have an entire month to do them so you don’t need to do them the day they are released.
Spreading out the time it takes to complete the task does not shorten the task.

Exactly, remember the math “Do x, x number of times = grind” no matter how much you spread it out, a grind is a grind.
if you don’t care about skin and achievements, like me, this game is grindless, well almost
if you don’t care about skin and achievements, like me, this game is grindless, well almost
Guild wars 1 was barely a grind, because it’s entire endgame wasn’t based around skins, there was actually compelling content and story in Fissure of Woe, Underworld, Domain of Anguish, The Deep and Urgoz’ Warren
Yes, the skin grind was there, but it wasn’t the only reason to do them.

Yep, this is true. The problem is most people have done everything. I had that problem in every MMO I ever started. Eventually you do everything and since REAL content takes ages, companies throw either temporary or really bad content at you until the good stuff is ready. The except was Rift, which had such a laughably small world at launch, that they HAD to keep coming out with content and even months later, there wasn’t that much to do even with the new content. Everyone sat around waiting for the new monthly event because everyone had done everything.
It would be lovely if content could be made faster than people could consume it…but it can’t. Go play another game, read a book, do the monthly stuff and wait for the big permanent updates.
Those updates are in the works, but they take time to produce, that’s all.
Well by your logic:
FotM is a grind
Dungeons are a grind.
Dailies are a grind.
Monthlies are a grind.
Leveling is a grind.
Map/World completion is a grind.
Personal story is a grind.
Living story is a grind.
Doing world bosses is a grind.
Well looks like the entire game is a grind. I guess it’s time to play another MMO that isn’t a grind. Oh wait. They all are.
It seems that most poeple think it is fun to kill one monster, but grind to kill two monsters. Go play other games if you don’t like it.
My reasons for the original post are that I love this game. I have enjoyed a lot of it very much but much of the new content is temporary and very repetitive. Even to the extent that the basic idea is to do a (different) group of of similar activities each 2 -4 weeks. Mostly running from place to place pressing the “f” key to perform a predetermined action. Other than moving about the game my only involvement is to press “f” repeatedly.
I just want Anet to (hopefully ) read this and just maybe take on board that what they are in-fact doing with all this temporary content is exactly what they set out NOT TO DO !!!
“So Lifelike.”
There’s no meaningful content in the latest updates. I’ve always interpreted Anet’s vision as an MMO in which players are driven by intrinsic motivation instead of chasing a carrot on stick. Sadly, every new update is about doing the same pointless tasks (press F!) over and over again. The only motivation for most players to go through this grind is a shiny new back item. GuildWars2 didn’t stay true to its ideals and is now just another dreary MMO out there.

Just a hint… you don’t have to do neither the pinata nor the effigies to get the final reward of the meta achievement. Both are optional for those people who actually enjoy a more “grindy” way of playing.
I’ll just drop this here.
Ugh..Each time I watch this(which is only the 3rd time maybe), I feel more disappointed and let down. This game was hyped to be the explorer’s dream come true..Gear for aesthetics. Explore. No grind. No stat increases. Come back in 6 months and pick up where you left off.
Such a let down I feel so deflated watching this.
I still have high hopes…maybe one day.
I envisioned playing this awsome looking game, at max level..standing around in some forest in some zone just looking around. Seeing a couple players battle some mobs in the distance. I sit down in game, look up at the moving sky, and continue watching their fight. Oops, they went down, time to go help. Hey! We killed the mob! Oh look at that, a cave was behind him. Lets check it out.
Instead….:(
K, I’ll check off these 5 items to make sure I get my laurel for the day. Ok, done. Hmm, lets check the website for meta events. None? Ok. I guess I’ll go farm for that legendary…cant even find a good spot anymore. Hmm, maybe I’ll try my luck in the mystic forge for The Lover. Ok now I feel really deflated..no luck. I just dropped 30 gold this time. Ugh, I don’t want to invest myself into WvW at this point in the game just yet because once I do thats all I’ll do. So what should I do. Ok, GW2lfg.com, COF P1..(so many zerker parties..sigh, elitists). 9:50PM Yippe, a group. 10:01PM K, done. Wait wasn’t that supposed to be extremely difficult? Thought I saw that somewhere. Anyways, kind of bored. I guess I’ll go watch cute cats on youtube…
Seriously, thats reality. Sad but true. Some of you can play just to play and I commend you. But the vast majority has been conditioned otherwise for YEARS by other games to seek that reward. And when arenanet put these things in the game, it diluted the desire to just explore..play..
God that manifesto was such bullkitten. Every word of it. Effect things around you..we dont want to build the same MMO everyone else is…each decision you make has perma effects around you…Killing centaurs in a field isnt what we want to do..ugh all crap. All lies all BS.

Well, honestly, the one thing they didn’t lie about in their Manifesto was the art… Gotta give them that. The visuals in this game are pretty kitten good. The guy with the funny accent deserves props, because he was the only guy in the video who wasn’t lying to his teeth.

Oh the art is amazing. The world is amazing. The detail is amazing. I give that team a 20 out of 10. Its absolutely stunning and I love it. Honestly, the world/art/environment is one of the reasons I keep coming back to the game. Its just so pleasing to look at and it its own right has the potential to completely engulf you. But then you get bogged down with everything else
The manifesto is not some holy document like a lot of players seem to think.
I don’t grind, and I don’t think GW2 as a game is a grind, but I’m not a big fan of the Dragon Bash content.
Mini-games are not my thing, and I’m not really interested in busting 200 pinatas, etc. The Moa Races were kind of fun for a day. I do it when I am running by one, but I don’t focus on doing it and likely will not complete this Living Story achievement.
I don’t think its fair to say that the entire GW2 game is now becoming a grind, but the achievements in Dragon Bash were certainly a boring time-sink.
I played it like in the video. You complain that you can’t do the stuff you like to. Why not? I really, really don’t know, be cause if I just play the game (randomly 1-2 dungeons per day, 1 hour of Orr events and fooling around with some friends somewhere else) I usually get my daily and eventually the monthly. Just get a good guild, then run different dungeons. I rarely ‘farm’ CoF1 (maybe 1-2/day or not at all). I farmed Arah p2 to get full Arah armor though, done with gw2lfg.com. I enjoyed that.

You do realize that playing how you “dreamed” is still totally possible right? The game is beatiful, the world big and full of funny little secrets. Is it Skyrim? Nope, not at all, but that’s to be expected from an MMO.
But for some reason, the fact that most people aren’t interested in your play style and would rather farm their lives out of CoF or world bosses stops you from exploring? And there’s been little desire to explore since start: remember what most people did at launch? Farm Orr all day and all night, while occasionally speedrunning a map to get to 100% completion. Arenanet had to shift their focus because it appears that every MMO player and his grandma only cares about “progression”.
Something’s wrong in this forum, and I bet it’s me being really stupid: half of what people post in here doesn’t seem to make any sense to me.
