“There’s no grind in GW2, everything’s optional!”
Same could be said about all the other MMO, even the grindiest one.
Game X doesn’t force you to get the best armor Y.

Just logged in GW2 after 2 months. Bought 1000 Coffers, got 1 skin, no wings.
RNG to the max.
Logged out, completely nothing new since I left.

Wings drop from mobs, not from coffers.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Is it Skyrim? Nope, not at all, but that’s to be expected from an MMO.

We’ll see about that when TES Online comes out.

The game is fine in most points, but it DOES contain a lot if grinding.
Ascended gear, Legendaries, Dungeon skins. You need to do the same action soooo many times to get what you want, it stopped being fun half way.

A complete Dungeon run takes sooooo many complete runs, I couldnt even count it. (+ Dungeons are just DPS races, but thats another topic)
Crafting Ascended Backpieces takes so many T6 items, either you have to be rich to buy them or grind farmspots to get it.
Legendaries – do I have to explain? It takes people MONTHS to finish it. Some of us havent even SEEN a precursor drop yet.

Why make stuff like this so grind based? Why not make people do other stuff to get the Items required for ascended gear and legendaries?
(→ Kill a special mob in a dungeon → combine it with several Mystic forge crafted things that require a —> variety <-- of other things, maybe even stuff you can only get by participating in certain events)

About the Festival stuff: This is not grinding imho, you can do most of the achievements while doing other stuff you like. It also has a great story and a nice setting. I actually REALLY enjoyed the story this time!

“We just don’t want players to grind in GW2.” – Well, I guess you really failed, ANet!
Update 5.9.2013: getting better ANet, still way to go!

I can already smell the disappointment of people buying TESO believing it will have a world of the same quality as TES single player games.

I don’t think people will like TESO. People loved Skyrim and Oblivion because it was an RPG game that carved out its own niché with combat, crafting, dungeon delving, etc. Trying to put these two types of games in an MMO format will frustrate players.

You’ll have players hoping that this format is translated into an MMO format…but then get frustrated because things are just so different than the traditional MMO styles like combat, tanking, healing, questing, etc. Then you’ll have people that hope it isnt translated into an MMO format and want the traditional style..and then complain that it just doesnt feel like skyrim, oblivion, etc.

In my eyes, these games were more of the adventure, and ocassionally come across a camp of two or three bandits that required some time to kill. And these fights were spread across the world, but there could be 10,15 minutes or even an hour before another fight. It was more about the journey and exploration, the story..than it was about combat gear and rewards.

It wont work. But I am definately going to try it out.

The only thing that I object to is the number of times we have to repeat trivial activities in order to get the festival achievements.

Given the incredible reward for breaking a pinata, I think a reasonable number to require is like… 5.

I understand the fireworks launching, because it makes it so Lion’s Arch always has fireworks going on. But it’s still not fun.

I did the fireworks, pinatas, and the holographic creatures, but I drew the line at the effigies.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

@cesmode completely ignoring my rebuttal. Oh well, I should do more interesting things instead of arguing on forums.

Hold on, let me scroll up, wolfy. I have been busy.

Edit: I read your post. Not sure what to make of it to be honest. Maybe my brain is shrinking and I couldnt follow, but maybe youre thoughts were incoherent when written.

What I gather from the post is : “What is stopping you from exploration”. My answer: The carrot. Im a normal human being…or at least I think so. Give me some water, and I’ll be content with water. Give me some beer and other mind-altering substances(not that I partake in these), and I’ll want munchies.

My point is, I was fine with the game as it was. Once they introduced better gear, more currencies for better gear..I am obssessive compulsive in that I must have it. Even though I dont need it, I want it. I want BiS gear. I got 5 toons to max level, geared out three of them with full exotics. And I was content with that to just sit back, explore, play some dungeons and run around WvW..happy. Content. Sublime. The current content was all that they gave me and I was content. There was nothing more. Then they dangled that first carrot in front of me, ascended back pieces/rings. I must have it. Mentality changed.

And I wouldnt consider it arguing. Rather, it is time well spent. Any time you have the chance to compare brain pans and spar with me, go for it

I’ll just highlight a few things.

“Most games you go out and you have really fun tasks occasionally that you get to do, and the rest of the game is this boring grind to get to the fun stuff. I swung a sword! I swung a sword again, and hey I swung it again. That’s great! We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2. No one enjoys that. No one finds it fun. We want to change the way people view combat.”

People keep citing this as some kind of gospel that Anet has violated. What content are you blocked from participating in? What are you forced to do that you don’t care to?

What system would you propose? Zero progression? People would leave – they did, and Anet fixed it. While I personally don’t care for ascended gear, people obviously have different opinions, and I can deal with that. And this isn’t coming from someone with zero ascended gear – I have one character fully loaded, and two more with a few pieces. The only “grinding” I did was fractals, by choice rather than necessity.

If the dragon wings are the problem, and the dragon bash events required for them – the only appropriate response is “so what?” You don’t like them, don’t do them. Still want the shiny reward? Tough cookies – life’s a kitten. You can still play the entire game without wings.

Grinding is something boring you have to do to get things required for content. E.g. getting tier 2 raid gear, so you stand a chance in running tier 3 raids. Grinding reputation points to access a dungeon or faction quest line. Grinding XPs to level up, so you can go to the next zone.

If you don’t think something is boring then it’s not a grind for you.
If what you get through the process is cosmetics and not required for content it’s not a grind.

Before ANet added ways other than FotM to get ascended rings I’d have said you have to grind for them, because FotM gets boring for me after a while, but ascended rings are BiS, so you pretty much have to have them.
