Might be, might not be. If there is something you desperately need or want, don’t let a few Gems stand in your way. Otherwise, if the Gem exchange is too vexing, wait until next year. Just choose which is more important. =)

If you really want the items now, just buy the gems. Even if you end up with excess gems, I’m fairly certain there’ll be something else down the track that you’ll end up wanting, so just hold onto the gems till then.

It isn’t a ‘mistake’. They aren’t going to remove the new exchange, they will just offer another option, as well.

As previously stated, buy now if it is something you really want, or wait until it is offered again at a later date. Up to you.

This is the exact thing people were complaining about. If he doesn’t have enough gold to “just buy” the gems, he will have to use real money.

Adding the preset gem numbers wasn’t a mistake. It’s a good feature, especially when the values are set to the common values that items are at (specifically the 800 mark).

Deleting the custom value entry was the mistake. I expect them to fix it in the next content patch which IIRC is Nov 3rd which will probably miss the halloween stuff. GG anet

Not really. The gem exchange has a real money value so it has to go through a serious level of QA. Even if they rolled it back, it’d probably take a week to see it live. They’ll QA it for several days then use it internally for a few weeks. I wouldn’t expect to see it live for another month. It’s probably not a high priority feature either and depending on whether it caused an additional gain in profit, they might want to wait it out until January due to the Christmas sales.

While we wait for a “fix”, let’s talk about the OTHER problem with the current version of the gem/gold exchange.

Right now, I’m looking at the screen and the “Get Gold” side says that 1 gold will cost me 10 gems. And yes, spending those 10 gems gets me that, 1 gold. No more, no less.

So, 250 gold should be 2500 gems, right? But no, it’s not. It’s 2223 gems. If we were to assume that that’s the correct price with no silver or copper left over, then 10 gems should have gotten me 1g 12s 46c. Where does the extra money go?

That’s right folks, the “Get Gold” option rounds it off and throws away the excess money. It’s a built-in rip off. Thanks, ANet.

There’s actually a “tax” where selling gems for gold will net you less gold than the amount of gold needed to purchase those gems in the first place. You should actually be glad that tax is there. Otherwise, you’d have the TP barons using the gem exchange as a speculative market, buying up gems by the thousands when they’re cheap only to resell them for a profit later. If you think gem prices are bad now, they’d be much, MUCH worse if this tax wasn’t there.

EDIT: Wait, I misinterpreted what Palador was saying. That is interesting. Unfortunately without knowing the exact algorithm that calculates the exchange rate, it’s hard to say if that’s intended or a bug.

I have it up and this is what I’m seeing

250 g – 2163 gems
100 g – 866 gems
50 g – 433 gems
10 g – 88 gems
1 g – 10 gems

Now I quickly used the API to pull the following data selling gems.

2200 gems – 254.3879 g (2163 gems – 250.1096 g – 11.5631 g per 100 gems)
875 gems – 101.1141 g (866 gems – 100.0741 g – 11.5559 g per 100 gems)
450 gems – 51.9956 g (433 gems – 50.0313 g – 11.5546 g per 100 gems)
90 gems – 10.3427 g (88 gems – 10.1129 g – 11.4919 g per 100 gems)
10 gems – 1.0885 g (10.8850 g per 100 gems)

There are two things going on, first is gem granularity. It’ll never be exact. Second is the exchange is non-linear. Small amount of gems or gold traded will be below the 100 gem rate. I had been trading in under 5 gold when buying gems for quite a while, this isn’t new. This also applies to large amounts as well. 2000 gems (note time has passed since I started writing this so the rates have changed from those above) according to the API is worth 232.7090 g while 20000 gems is worth 2312.5831 g.

Also did you actually exchange gems for gold? If you didn’t then the amount you get might be that amount of gold, plus change, as in the correct amount. Now I’ve been told by a dev when buying gems you don’t need to figure out the exact amount to prevent from overpaying when buying gems, that the exchange will only take the exact value to for those gems. Meaning if you had tried to exchange 5 gold for 40 gems but 40 gems only costs 4.9 gold, the exchange only takes 4.9 gold and not 5 gold. I see no reason why the other side wouldn’t give you the exact amount.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Yes. Twice to test, after doing it once the other day and only realizing in hindsight what I thought was a mistake.

Both tests: 10 gems for 1 gold. Result was loss of 10 gems, gain of 1 gold. No more, no less.

According to Gaile, they’re doing their best to have it implemented before halloween ends, but no promises:

I saw the test of the new interface today and it looks solid to me. (I also happen to think it’s very attractive, but maybe that’s just me. )

The interface and Custom option move into testing now, and the text is already headed to Localization.

The dev team is keenly aware that there are Halloween items available only during a specific period (through November 4) and therefore they intend to do their darnedest to offer the new options in the next few days but certainly in advance of November 4th if humanly possible. (I have confidence this will happen.)

Cash grab is the only possible explanation. They’re rounding it like this on purpose. Rip a few silver off of each player and it ends up being a lot of gold.

I confess: I’m confused. I just went and talked to our UI developer/programmer type people, and they opened up the UI and showed me an incremental purchase rate. As they put in a figure, say, 512 gems, they got a price in gold, silver, and copper, nothing rounded up to the next gold. And when they completed the transaction that amount — and only that amount — was what was deducted from their total currency.

Can you show me what you’re seeing that doesn’t present an exact amount?

Here’s the interface for exchanging gems for gold.

Hopefully someone can explain what they feel is wrong about this, because in both cases the amount is carefully parsed to the smallest denominator that I can see.

Are you concerned that you cannot buy 512 gold, 4 silver, and 93 copper? Well, that’s true, it’s not possible. But there’s no “cash grab” that I can see, and I’m trying to understand what your concerns are.

I think their problem is that you can’t spend every single gem you have to get gold. Like 10, 11, 12. The system will jump from 12 to 25 etc. Made up numbers, not in game, so can’t get exact amounts. So you might be stuck with 1 or 3 gems that you can’t use.
It’s a really petty complaint.

the issue with this system is that you can’t convert gems to gold in smaller denominations than 1 gold.
If i have 8 gems and the ratio of gem to gold is 9 to 1. How am I about to sell that off,

The difference between 1 and 2 gold is like ~8 gems, how does that round off? am i potentially loosing 1 copper – 99 silver and 99 copper? why am i not able to precisely sell the amount of gems i have,

I think it would be better when converting gems to gold to be able to sell it by the gems and get the precise amount of gold, silver and copper for what ever its worth
