Getting to Know Your Fellow Posters Thread
I can’t give you my real name due to my line of work ;-)
- I can tell you I’m 51, but don’t look anywhere near it.
- I’m involved in counter-terrorism, working for the US Govt.
- Sarcasm and humor are my preferred communication methods, when those don’t work, I just won’t say anything.
*I didn’t have any Atari systems, but I did have both Mattel Intellivision systems and numerous games(sadly didn’t keep them, the horror). - I thoroughly enjoy war movies, action adventures, sci-fi, and the like…and big on the old school musicals and old time Hollywood films.
- I remember the announcement about TriForge, Inc. before they changed the name to Arena.net, and completely forgot about them until the first new reports of GW1.
- I participated in the entire first week preview that they had for GW1 from E3.
- I was part of the Alpha team for Factions(I can safely say this now I believe) ;-)
- I owned both Collectors Editions and Standard copies of all the GW1 campaigns and one Expansion. I eventually consolidated to only one account.
- The only online games I’ve every played are GW1 and GW2, I have a thing against monthly payments.
- I almost always play female characters exclusively whether it’s a single player or multi-player game, just my preference.
- I dislike PvP, but somehow have managed to kill 114 players in GW2, must have been from the first year, though I did dabble in WvW for a while.
- I can be annoying as all he**, and I usually run around solo, though I lead an in-game guild that has been in existence since Diablo 2; I joined in GW1 when our original guild was first part of an alliance then moved over when others stopped playing.
- I don’t care what others think about me, nor do I seem to care about my health.
- I like to take on 3 Teragriffs at once on my ranger and get stomped, I also like watching my pigs down Mordrem Wolves and Husks solo.
- I listen to rock, from Aerosmith to ZZ Top.
- I read Sci-Fi and Fantasy/Adventure, with some Horror and Suspense novels thrown in for variety.
*I do not watch television, nor have I watched it for the past 4 years. - I’m divorced and love it, don’t miss taking care of the 7 cats we had…I prefer dogs but don’t mind cats because they keep to themselves mostly.
I’m done with this.

- 44 years old, gamer for 34 of those
- 8 year old offspring (who earned Legendary Defender of Ascalon at age 4..)
- single parent and happy to be that way
- long time GW1 player before GW2
- played Radio Shack pong standalone before, but Space Assault was my first computer game
- TRS-80 color computer, that is.
- CEO of a software development company
- I like making videos but I usually end up just playing and never using the footage
- live in Vancouver (the Canada one)
- AC/DC, Avril Lavigne and Alanis Morissette. I know more Minecraft versions of songs than their originals, and now my son is introducing me to dubstep (I know it’s a bit late).
- love pink and orange, but never together!
- I can read and compose music, played piano and guitar but not so much anymore
- I bet you can guess my favourite book, but perhaps surprisingly I’ve only read it a couple of times.
- Second favourite is Stephen King’s The Stand, which I have read 4 or 5 times
- I REALLY don’t like going to an event where I have to mingle, but I will stand on stage by myself in front of any number of people with ease.
- I put great effort into keeping my real life and game life separate, to the point that sometimes I think I have MPD
- Used to have cats, but I don’t anymore and I’m happier to not have hair to clean up all the time.
- I go nuts doing the same thing for too long.. which sounds strange considering how much I play GW2.. In this case, there are so many things to do, I can change (ie: doing daily fractals to WvW to dungeon runs, etc..) whenever I get bored of something.
- The only event I do consistently is Wild Wednesday Tequatl runs with Soren Ironclaw and Kenage Achalarus. (11pm PST run, usually guild spawn one right before that with GSCH/SORC)
- The Hot Republic [THR] is my guild, and I spend absolutely no time trying build it into anything.
- In Guild Wars 1, I spent most of my time standing in pre-searing Ascalon, buying and selling.
oh ya..
- Blackgate on my main and Crystal Desert on this account.

Been playing MMO’s for as long as I can remember
Love to read more than anything else (even GW2!)
I read basically anything. Favorite books include: Stardust, Airborn & Wizard’s First Rule
I love PvP in GW2, but I occasionally enjoy other game modes
I can be quite vicious in game (especially PvP), but I’m actually a pretty nice guy
Been a part of Knights of the Rose [KoR] since pretty much the release of GW2 and I plan to stay there until the death of GW2.
In GW1, I was one an officer of a French guild in the Alliance that owned HzH who specialized in DTSC during US peak hours. I was 14 years old at the time.
I’ve farmed enough Kurzick Faction to get the “Savior of the Kurzick” title 10 times over.
I love watching movies. Some favorite movies include: Casablanca, The Intouchables and the Dark Knight
I take my coffee black and without sugar
In-game gold has little value to me so I end up giving it away most of the time.

Never played GW1. Considering it for the rockfur raccoon mini.
Played GW2 since beta. It was love at first Charr-hammer.
I have a bad, bad case of altitis. And yet, not as bad as the awesome peep with 64 GW2 character slots. I am in awe of that person.
I spurn all the usual addictions, except chocolate. Mm, chocolate.
Also a “Wrath baby” and somehow manage to juggle GW2 and WoW.
I’ve been an avid gamer since my wee days. My first game purchase with my own money was Final Fantasy. The original, for NES.
Also an avid roleplayer and have been since high school. I adore well-written characters, but I’ll admit to being a bit elitist about it.
I have latent desires to be a game designer. I’ve been part of a LARP design since its early days, and I enjoy poking new games to suck out their delicious, delicious systemy bits. I hope to write a roleplaying system book or make a board/card game sometime in the future.

I graduated top of my high school class. It didn’t mean squat in college. :P
I love Charr for many reasons, but most amusing is their casual brutality, and yet I loathe MMA for the same reason.
Most of my television amounts to anime off Crunchyroll or what episodes I can catch of Castle and a few other humorous dramas. Asking me about actors is an automatic failure.

No, it’s not a drinking game. Well I never played it as one. I played it more as “Where’s Waldo”. The last time I played a drinking game was Season 4 Lost and “take a shot at every Jackface”.
I don’t do drinking games anymore. It got expensive.

- My username came about during an internet persona reformat, and I saw my PC bluetooth adapter blinking out of the corner of my eye.
- I’ve been playing MMOs since pre-Luclin EverQuest.
- Mainstream MMO experience: EQ, AO, DAoC, AoC, LotRO, WO, GW1, DDO, Vanguard, SW:tOR, GW2, possibly more that I’ve forgotten.
- I have been an invited, closed beta tester in most MMOs I have played (not counting pre-order “betas”), most companies citing my community involvement during EQ.
- Gamer since before most children could form coherent sentences, my first console was an NES when I was 3. Beat Super Mario Bros. by the time I was 4.
- I love gaming, trading card games, and animation (regional variants, 3D, and more, based on artistic merit). I consider building, maintaining, and repairing PCs and networks a passion rather than a job or hobby.
- I love science fiction, science fantasy, and high fantasy, as well as Cyberpunk and Steampunk subcultures.
- I love an eclectic music range, from classical to modern rock and metal, with a special place for electronica, especially chiptune.
- I love to argue and debate, to the point of coming off arguing for the sake of arguing, as long as the point remains the exchange of opinion. I’m told German blood tempered by German, Irish, and Texan upbringing will do that to you
- I come across as very opinionated and stubborn, to the point of sounding “holier than thou”, but never mean to be so. And I leave any argument with a clean opinion: I have mine, you have yours, and as long as all sides are considered by all involved parties, no animosity is ever held, regardless of how “violent” the argument may have been.

A question for those who use their middle name instead of forename:
When did you decide/was it decided to use your middle name? Is there a reason why?
I ask because I despise my first name of Christopher, and at age 18 I tried to get people to use my middle name of Simon. My parents completely agreed, had no issue with it, but noone ever remembered so I finally dropped it and went back to Chris.
I was thinking of actually changing my name legally to a chosen forename, and changing my surname from White to its ancestral Waskaelis (I’d need to find a definitive correct spelling first) because I hate my forename so much, just wondered how quickly people adapt, or if they ever do.

I use my middle name because shortly after I was born my parents decided that they didn’t like my first name as much. Now I know that anyone calling using my first name is a salesman and makes life easier.

A question for those who use their middle name instead of forename:
When did you decide/was it decided to use your middle name? Is there a reason why?
I changed my complete name for other reasons a few years ago. I like both of my names. Due to past experience, I felt it better to have more separation between my professional and personal loves. I use my first name professionally, and my middle name personally.

Played M:tG from Ice Age to Zendikar. The worst mistake I ever made was becoming a judge. After that, I never was able to regain my love for the game, and eventually sold my collection for about $3200US. Dealing with the tournament atmosphere is also why I avoid almost all forms of PvP now.

I sometimes do Booster Draft and play among friends. I no longer really go out to play all that much – half due to my job being a night shift type thing, and half because I run into too many players who equate stomp-style wins as “fun” and aren’t having fun unless they have a deck which wins on turn 4.
. . . on the other hand, “Commander/EDH” was one of the more fun formats which got released. Still plagued by people who take it too seriously and try to win as opposed to making a fun deck.

I like both my first and middle names.
However, the proper pronunciation of my middle name escapes a lot of people, so I always thought it was rude when it was said wrong. However, I was very young and exacting. My grandmother taught me the proper Danish way to say Hans.
Some of my friends would use my middle name, which I had no problem with. Even today, I have a group of friends that know me by my first name and others by my middle name, which is just fine with me.
However, if I ever heard my mom use my middle name(proper pronunciation or not) I knew I was in big trouble…..
I’ve been on the Magic the Gathering Pro Tour, it was a really long time ago now

2009 and 2010. I could make it to the tour I just never did very well while I was there. I enjoyed it a lot though.

I grew up using my middle name. I have the same first name as my father (and grandfather for that matter) so I guess my parents figured it would be easier to use my middle name.
When I reached highschool I decided to change things up and started going by my first name at school (and afterschool job) while family continued to use my middle name.

I completely agree. It’s threads like this, and communities like ours, that have made me absolutely passionate about forums for oh, so many years.
Much <3 to everyone who has posted!

Hmmm.. What would you bite off if you had a shark for a head? :’D
Orange traffic cones – I suspect they are waffels in some alternate dimension.
Never read a Potter book or The Godfather. Do they have Wonderlands in them too?
Like Wonderland, both have immersive worlds I found fascinating to explore.
This is kinda one of those illusion pictures… Just stare at it and you’ll see the image of a Black Cat appear. Smarter folks seem to see the image quicker.

Is this where I make the bad joke and say the cat is actually white and gold?

it seems many like them better than the games they comment on.” -Horrorscope.7632
Okay, my turn…
- 36-yr old married father of two girls
- They play all my MMOs with me (GW2, SWTOR, LotRO)
- Work for a large American aerospace company
- I have a business degree but should have been a structural engineer or video game tester (duh!)
- I have a pacemaker/defibrillator implanted in my chest
- Said defibrillator has gone off and saved me from death by ventricular fibrillation
- I swear like a sailor
- Basically learned to read with comic books
- I read the LotR trilogy annually and the Harry Potter series every couple of years
- Favor rock and roll (Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse = #1, Led Zeppelin = #2) but have been into dubstep lately…
- Been in love with video games since the Atari and Commodore 64 days
- First MMO was SWG which I loved until the NGE, quit the day after that abomination dropped
- Spent time in WoW and enjoyed it, but real life steered me toward a more casual, more solo playstyle
- REALLY enjoying GW2!
- I think it’s hilarious that “kitten” is the censor word. Cracks me up every time.
- I don’t have pets, but my godkitten neighbor’s kittening kitten craps in my godkitten yard all the godkitten time.
I guess that’s all for now…
A question for those who use their middle name instead of forename:
When did you decide/was it decided to use your middle name? Is there a reason why?
When I was a kid my parents let my youngest brother change his name to Robin, as in Batman-and. So unfair, they wouldn’t let me be Batgirl. But that taught me that names can be changed. I didn’t mind my first name until people began mocking it, turning it into diminutives and the like. As it happened my middle name was one almost impossible to do that to, so between 5th and 6th grade I dropped my first and used my middle, just putting on my first name’s initial when having to use my legal name.
I did it that way for many years, until I got engaged in law school. Having decided to use my betrothed’s last name (it flowed better and made a better signature than my maiden name), I investigated and learned that while I could add a last name on my marriage certificate, I could not drop my first name. So I went to the courthouse and did a legal name change, becoming just Middle Last. A few months later we wed and I became Middle Last Marriedname.
I think that my early exposure to the power of choosing one’s own name was one small factor in my ease of adaptation to people using fan names, medieval/reenactment names, and internet handles. It always pained me in court when judges wouldn’t believe a client had borrowed a car from or loaned one to someone they only knew by a nickname, given how many of my friends sported names like Aelfric or Eowyn or Chort … and with my swiss cheese mind I retained very few of their real names despite being close friends with them for years.
Maybe I should take my turn at invalidating half the items on my “potential security question” list…
- 28 years old, male, single (not very interesting but it answers some omissions!)
- I was born and raised in New Zealand, but have lived in the US for the last few years.
- I work as a software engineer for Microsoft. This sometimes makes reading the internet, um, interesting.
- Due to the above I also live in the Bellevue area. I’ve never visited ArenaNet though – Sadi says I should, but… I don’t know, maybe one day.
- I started my online gaming thing in late August 1997 (which I remember so well because the Princess Diana crash anchors it, of all things) on Kali. I was something like 10, which seems awfully young to me now.
- Spent many many years just playing Descent. Actually still do, and am one of the top 10 players in the world now; sadly that doesn’t mean so much when only a few hundred people play the game at most.
- I started playing Guild Wars on release day, after watching my brother play beta; the reason was that it looked like a good spiritual successor to Diablo 2, which I was a big fan of at the time, and I didn’t have to pay a subscription to do so, which was a big plus for a teenager without a job or credit card. This was back in the time when a lot of pessimists were saying Diablo 3 would never exist; though in a twist of fate I never really got back into it once it did.
- I’ve also played D&D for a while (15 years on and off I think); kind of got stuck on 3.5e, but may consider 5e if the opportunity presents itself. Actually never played it in person until a one-hour demo session at a recent PAX; it was always over the internet using chat rooms and virtual tabletops. These days I mostly DM, since few of my acquaintances have the time/personality type to make it happen. Though I would really like to get back to playing one day
- I am what would be considered in the US as a Christian liberal, which is also apparently not very common in the US.
- I used to look down on gridiron/American football until I joined an office fantasy football league, and now I find it fun to watch. I feel like I kind of cheated with the local team winning a Superbowl so soon after I moved in though.
- I also do casual short- to mid-distance running – mainly 5k but have started working up to longer distances.
- I would like to read more than I do, but never seem to find the time. This also applies to playing music, learning foreign languages, watching movies that everyone else has already seen, and even playing video games that everyone else has already played.
- Speaking of music, I seem to gravitate towards power/prog metal but am the sort of doesn’t-get-it dweeb who listens to things like Dream Theater for the power ballads. Wee. Also, pianos are nice and make just about anything better if used well.
- I feel that the internet would be a better place if people were a little quicker to listen (and make a genuine effort to understand), and a little slower to talk (and judge). That probably goes for the rest of society too, actually…
- My most-anticipated HoT feature at the moment is the adventure thingy that reportedly involves jumping puzzles. I like to race them for time, but until now there’s never been a point other than just being able to say I did it.
- Or… okay, maybe the druid spec. I always have to play a druid in any game I play that has them. I don’t know why, it’s just compulsory.

Cheers to those who replied to my question
I tend to know people by what I first knew them kitten if I first met them on the net, I remember their nickname and not their real one.
Sounds like it isn’t a problem to a lot of people to adapt though. I might change it when I am able to!
- I spent many years writing freelance for tabletop games such as Changeling: the Dreaming, Vampire: the Masquerade, Mage: the Ascension and bunches of others.
Oh cool, I knew James Moore and his sister as well as Bradstreet. Very cool bunch over there at White Wolf back then.
Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!
Oh, I guess here goes…
- My first name is “Godestablishedyou,” yes, that is my first name, no I didn’t change my name, that is my given name.
- I studied computer science in a private university but ran out of money my Junior year, so I never finished my BS.
- After I left university I continued to study and took classes in a junior college.
At one point, I took some 3ds max classes in which we had semester long projects. So I asked the professor if I could make a FPS from scratch in the Unity engine, he agreed. I determined to make all the assets and code myself (which I did). - After two semesters of working on this game (endless tweaking and optimizing, I couldn’t let things go, bad programmer instinct), I have this to show for. You can try the game here. I apologize if I broke it on the latest build.
- Shortly after, I went in to an interview at ArenaNet for an internship as a programmer. I heard interviews were quick there, and they were… So I flew back home. But at least I got to meet the president with the other interns, and the office tour was nice.
- Some time later I got my first real job as a QA Engineer at a software company, but now I work as an account manager in a completely different field outside software development.
- I will eat every food, except Balut, monkey brain, and blood (I don’t consider scat food). But this was after I decided to not be so picky when I ate.
- I store too much Star Wars, Star Trek, Arda lore, and other useless information in my head.
- I enjoy studying and reading about science, philosophy, theology, and about anything interesting.
- My wallpaper on my desktop and work desktop for years has been a rendering of my FPS, reminding me I should keep at making games, since it is something gratifying to do.
- GW2 is a good game to take a break from DotA 2 and CS:GO (I really love Counter-Strike), a lot less stress.
- After the GW2 beta, I hit max level with my norn guardian, and got burned out. I recently came back after two years and I now have an asura elementalist and a human thief.
- My guild is divided in to three groups, those who haven’t logged in for 4 months, 12 months and Unknown.
- I like airsofting with friends every few months.
BUMP
-game stuff
I started playing about a month or two after launch to join my friends since vanilla dioblow Tres was disappointing. My first character was a char warrior to get used to the mmo world . I later decided to make a female Engi because I wanted to stare at someone pleasant for hours on end (best choice evar, love the class). My ranger looks similar to me because I’m awesome like that. My ele is basically my dress up barbie doll (incidentally I like the play mechanics too).
IRL stuff
I like long walks on the beach. I lived in Illinois for a while, which made me miss California so much more when I got back. (no I won’t tell you where I am now.)
I used to surf alot, now I just live on a ship (no I won’t tell you why).
I’d have many side jobs growing up In life. Some examples include photography, modeling, and singing in public (yes I’ll sing for you). I was young and crazy back then, now I’m training to get that flat stomach again (definitely have a pillow in my belly).
Never finished college, but now at least I’m close to an AA degree in electrical engineering. I loved building computers, so IT stuff is a close second.
Love my family and adore my friends (both IRL and online). Love the night life. I lack sleep (4 hour sleeping days, and crash sundays). I’m single….. for a very good reason…. high standards :p..
back to game stuff
On Sea of Sorrows. My inactive guild is <SAO> Sword Art Online Kings. I spend my rare time off to do daily Spvp, hunt a world boss or too, and grind a dungeon or fractal if I have time to do so. I’m not the GL of my guild, but I’m a co-founder and plan to develop that sexy guild hall when HOT comes out.
