Gold from playing, not grinding or farming
Who say’s you can’t do that then? What is your question really?
I rarely do dungeons or WvW. I just play and get rewarded.

FYI you can try out builds/runes/sigils for free in the Heart of the Mists before spending any gold.
Test it against a target golem or jump in a hot join match to see how it plays.
So what exactly do you suggest?
Let’s reward people in WvW the same amount of gold per hour as farmers?
Well that won’t work at all. Because then those shelt/pen/cof1 farmers would gravitate to WvW and farm that. And they’d still make more money than you because those farmers spend more time in the game than you.

I make 1-2 gold per day without trying. Rarely do dungeons, PvP, WvW, or Fractals. Not cause I don’t like to…just mostly don’t do them. Not hard to make money or get rewards (well…harder after the Nov patch)

how near are you to get a legendary?
Obviously unless you are one of those few blessed by rng.
As i sait i’ll tell you i play a lot and despite i play mostly challenging content like 30 fotm, and other dungeons, i m nowhere near to buy HALF a precursor…..
And i don t waste many moneys…i save most of them.
P.S. ald legendary is a tier ….many people have 2-3 and aim for more….
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
WvW rewards the most silver from event completion of anything in the game, but I agree that it would be nice if it would be more lucrative.
You can definitely acquire plenty of gold “just playing” if you do a mix of content.
If you are serious about why you want the gear you want- another set to try out a different build- and not an implied “but I won’t do it unless I can have best-in-slot items”- the figure you quoted for the pieces from the TP is way off. :-/ Please consider 80 rares, or 75-79 exotics, for a massive savings over 80 exotics which have only a slightly higher stat allocation with extreme diminishing returns. I promise you won’t notice the difference.

Precursors/legendaries are wholly cosmetic prestige items and not related to the OP’s concern at all.

I have no clue how close I am to any of that. For me that could become a goal later. Right now I simply play and have fun, all the rest will follow, I am in no hurry.
I don’t want to get too off topic, but lets be really. I have played since pre launch. I am not a “hard core” player but I play an hour or two pretty much every day and have always completed all of my monthlies and dailies.
I pretty much do open world, a few fractals and dungeons, and some WvW.
Two level 80s.. both with two 400 crafting and in exotics. So I have wasted SOME money, but most of it I have saved. I have total right now, about 60 gold. Figure in the money I’ve wasted, I have probably generated like 120-150 since launch.
Now compare that to people who are listing legendaries/precursors. They spend my life total in gold, just in LISTING fees. There is a huge problem with wealth in the game. I don’t think its a problem with farming, like the original OP states, unless farming is THAT profitable.
I feel the issue is a combination of market manipulators combined with early game bugs, and DR issues that hammer legitimate players (both casuals and hard core people).

So you play 2/3 hours a day, and you expect to have the same wealth as a guy who plays 6-12 hours a day? What kind of rational is that?

My gold comes from playing, not farming. And I’m relatively close to getting a legendary. Well over halfway, for sure. Most of the hard bits are done. That said, I did get lucky with the precusor, but anyway, yeah, if I had to guess I’m more than 70% done.

Honey, you farmed your 1 mil karma, that ain’t playing.

FARMING != PLAYING
Wrong, since you get karma by just playing. I almost never “do” dailies. Dailies just happen while you’re playing.
Farming is when you do a specific thing, like run through dungeons repeatedly to get gold. I, on the other hand, don’t. I run to help guildies, and incidentally get gold. I play the game, often in low level zones because I like them.
I’m not running around Orr, following Plinx, though I’ll do an event if I run across it.
The thing that is different between farming and playing is that in farming your intent is to make money. Playing your intent is to have fun. I’m making money incidentally. I’m getting karma incidentally.
Do you know how many times I’ve gotta a daily without knowing I was close. And the reward for dailies is almost 7000 karma with buffs. I’ve done monthlies too. That’s a lot of karma.
But I didn’t farm any of it. I just played the game.
Same. Im not sure whT it is you’re wanting. I just do whats fun for me and manage to make at least a few gold a day, sometimes more if I get a good drop. I refuse to grind stictly for cash. I’ve played those games and I dont choose to play that way anymore.
You don’t need exoctics to try out a new build. Just buy rares for a 10th of the price. The difference is minimal, maybe 10%.

I may be one of the ‘unlucky’ ones but by simply playing the game I may net a few silver a day. I don’t ‘farm’.
This game has two aspects that encourage Anet to keep the DR down. The 1st is inflation – if everyone were ‘rich’ prices would go up. Second is the GEM Store. If earning Gold in game is difficult/frustrating it encourages you to spend real money for in game cash.
Personally, I blame the ‘farmers’. If everyone were just playing the game ‘normally’ then the DR’s could be adjusted UP so everyone could enjoy. However since there’s a percentage of players abusing content by ‘farming’ it, Anet has no choice but to lower the drop rate for everyone because of the abuse of the few.
While they’ve attempted to put in place mechanics that discourage ‘BOTS’ it is difficult for them to target farming without effecting ‘normal’ human activity playing the game.

Then I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong if you’re just playing the game and having gold.
I play WvW a few hours a day and get nothing. Repair fees only, and if I’m lucky I break even.
Superior runes 6/6 is usually the kicker. Builds are reliant on those expensive 6/6 rune bonus.

If you’re only playing one aspect of the game, say WvW, it might be different. I mean if you play all day and do nothing but SPvP, you barely make any money at all.
I’m talking about PVeing, when I talk about playing the game, as I assume most people are. WvW actually represents only a small portion of the game. Meaning you have four maps, and when you compare the area of those maps to the area of the rest of the game, it’s pretty small.
So you’re playing a small fraction of the game, where as I’m playing the entire game (including WvW sometimes).

I play wvw 3 times a week at least, for about 2-4 hours a time. At the end of the night I sometimes come out with 1-2g and sometimes just a few silver. I agree wvw needs some tuning as far as making money. I do find it is easy to supplement with a few dungeon runs though for a few g, I enjoy dungeons though.
The superior runes can be expensive but you could possibly come close to what you would get with 4/2 major runes. This would be a cheap way to test something out before you spend a fortune on exo gear. This is what I do when I want to test. If it does not work out I can always just salvage the lvl 80- rares for globs and most times I get the runes back. I can sell all of that to get something back.

I can get 50s – 2g from running AC. Each run takes about 30 minutes, so that can amount to a lot of moolah. :P
If I’m doing WvW or world PvE, I generally make 1g – 3g a day without trying.
P.S. If you need certain exotic gear, check to see which dungeon it’s from. Then, if you’re up for it, just run that dungeon till you hit 80. By that time, you’ll have enough tokens to get you most of (ALL of, if you’re running AC, because it’s the first dungeon) your gear for 80. By running AC and some CM, general map roaming, dailies, and personal story quests, I have a full set of exotics (armor, weapons, trinkets, sigils, runes, everything) ready for when I hit 80 (I’m level 77 atm). Anything you can’t get with the tokens by 80, you can get with Karma in Orr.

I do play a lot. But I make a gold from a single dungeon run, almost always, and that takes 20 minutes for some of them. An hour for another. I mean I do my daily that’s 5 silver right there…or 5% of that gold.
I mean I gather stuff when I see it, I kill stuff rather than skip stuff. But it’s just playing to me. Half the time I’m gabbing with my guild on mumble and not even particularly paying attention to what I’m doing. And somehow, the gold comes in.

I’m pretty sure you’re mistaken about your perception about who participates in what playstyle. I’ve been leading a guild since 2004, and from what have seen over the years, there is a pretty significant portion of our players who are ONLY interested in PVP, be it world PVP or wargame PVP (by whatever name). I’ve also seen people who only run dungeons or who only ever do open world PVE, and there are players who – given a choice – will only craft or only play the market or only participate in socializing (read: stand around chatting for hours on end).
I think the problem is more that for an equal amount of time spent in game, the rewards (perceived and factual) per play style are very different.

I’m not mistaken because I’m not saying what you think I said.
I spoke about playing the game for me and how I make my money. I didn’t say that other people who play portions of the game can or can’t make money as fast or they should. Nor did I talk about the percentage of people who play the game like me.
I’m simply saying I don’t farm but I make money.
I’m well aware certain people only WvW. How does that change what I said at all?
[quote=1444383;Vol.5241So you play 2/3 hours a day, and you expect to have the same wealth as a guy who plays 6-12 hours a day? What kind of rational is that?
[/quote]
I really don’t understand why people get so snappy on the forums.
Firstly, I play 2 hours a day during my work week. On my off days, if I am able, I play a lot longer.
Secondly, I never said I expect to have as much money as someone who playes 3-4 times longer then myself. HOWEVER, even if I did play that long, I would be looking at a life time total of about 600 gold. I guarantee you there are people out there with over 10k+ gold.
The point I was trying to get to, was there is a HUGE discrepancy when you compare the wealth of a player who just plays the game as opposed to people who work the system to make money and the reasons for that, IMO only, is:
1) Early game bugs and exploits allowed a handful of players to secure a huge amount of wealth early on.
2) Market manipulation compounds the issue, allowing players who have a lot of money to make a lot more.
3) The DR system, which was designed to combat bugs, has a tendnacy to kick in at odd times causing no loot during normal play.
I dislike the idea of DR as much as the next person, but seriously… you blame people for playing the way they want? Farming is abusing content? Why is “your” way of playing “normal” and other peoples’ way of playing “abuse?” I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that people can play GW2 “the way they want to.”
I make 5-10 gold, and a handful of ecto, a day just playing for a few hours a night. I do my daily in Orr. If Shelt or Pen are up I do those but I don’t farm or idle for the events. Plinx usually pops when i’m there so I do that, as well as any temples that might be underway. Afterwards, I do the even fractal for the day and another run to level up if the group is fast. And then I might do a few dungeon paths with the guild or level up an alt depending on time. I play to play and am more than halfway to my own legendary without any particular grinding/farming.
The real question here is why you feel you don’t have the gold that you need? Dynamic events, and nothing else, are easily profitable enough to pay waypoint and repair costs.
Exotics can be crafted for nothing but the time to get the mats, or gotten for free using dungeon tokens. Ascended (if you’re into that kind of thing) can be gotten for free from random fractal drops, saving daily laurels, or pristine fractal tokens. Tier six materials can be promoted from lower quality materials. And ecto/rares are easier to come by since the patch that allows user level loot anywhere.
Everything you need to be effective in the game is easy to come by and has a gold cost of little to nothing. Things like T3 cultural, Legendaries and other shinies are things you don’t need to progress, qualify for content or play better. They are long term end goals for your character.
Some advice that might help you enjoy the game more: If its taking too long and you are getting impatient with legendary progress and money making, then forget it. Pick a new more attainable goal for your character that will lend to getting the legendary.
In my case, I decided I wanted fractal lvl 30. And on the way I would TP any exotic drops, salvage any rare armor drops for ecto, and save rare weapon drops to forge. I got a precursor from the forge when I hit lvl 27 and sold it in the TP to buy the one I want.
My character goal is still to hit 30, and hunt for a fractal sword because I wants one. And every day I am getting closer to my legendary and making more money, without stressing over not getting it fast enough or not making enough.
Dragonbrand
Gold is farmed by CoF path 1 ad nauseum or ori nodes farming(?).
Why can’t I just play the game and be rewarded? I wanna just play WvW, and maybe get 1g (selling junk from bags) after an hour of playing, and not worry about trying to maximize my bags by tagging as many people as possible in zergs. The issue here is with tagging in WvW probably. And TP inflation.
I’m rambling. This isn’t the first time I’m revolted by the game because of the grindiness / economy.
I want to do one simple thing. Get some alternative stats gear to try out a build. I don’t think I want to grind 50g (exotic armor/runes) to get the pieces from the TP to try out a build.
I know where you are coming from Frega, however, others on these forums who are oh so lucky to get exotic drops all the time to sell do not realize that WvW players are lucky ever to see an exotic. Over 500 hours played and I’ve yet to see one drop in-game or through a chest. All exotics I’ve obtained are either dungeon token or karma based.
Even if they’d up the Badges of Honor dropped by players would be an improvement and add some more Variety to the Invasion armor to include different stats than PVT.*
No one wants to do the Jump Puzzles for badges. Sad when you get Badges of HONOR for jumping over rocks. But not for Killing Enemies and SAVING Friendlies.
So all in all,
Add More Badges for Killing Enemies and more variety to the items you can get from the Badges.
That way WvW gold can be used to Upgrade and buy siege equipment.
Just a thought.
WvW = 95% running + 4% fighting NPC + 1% Killing Players
There is why you get no reward for it.
WvWvW maps need a huge revamp in the form of more WP and traveling options.
Some playstyles will not be as profitable as others. For instance, my playstyle involves very little time spent in dungeons, fractals, and WvW. I do a lot of crafting, and that tends to be more money spent than made. I also haven’t really jumped on the dragon-chasing bandwagon.
Someone that spends time in dungeon runs, fractal runs, or just generally running around the world in a large group are all going to make more money faster than I will. It’s not a problem, but I do think it’s ignorant to assume that since a given person’s playstyle nets them 10g every hour of normal play, everyone else that isn’t doing this is playing the game wrong or is an idiot.
I usually make enough in WvW to cover repair costs plus a lil extra. But I play pvE on alts when I want to make some extra coin. Just take off across whatever map I’m on and see what comes up.

Nope. I do the exact same thing. And only play a few hours per day. It all about time management and playing with a purpose instead of sitting in LA. Although I do have an active guild, and that helps.

No it just requires farming instance ad nauseum, same thing.
Not so much. I crafted my full exotic knights set plus jewels (including trait books) just on money I made leveling my guardian. I like to have my characters support themselves with their own money so I’m not spreading myself too thin.
I also only use my money for what I really need. I don’t blow it on stuff that I outgrow quickly or is simply for looks, not until lvl 80 at least.

No, it doesn’t….just play the game. Take things as they come, play the DE’s if you run across them. I have 9 toons…4 of them in Exotics that I crafted. I’ve only run 5 dungeons since August and those were just to help out guildies…not my thing.

Good lord, same fking thing. Stop giving me your anecdotes, all requires doing some kinda farming/playing PvE or have been acquired thru gold accumulation after a long time.
I have my exotic gear by farming TA exp ad nauseum, now I want another set for another build with different stats. I don’t want to farm again for it. If I play normally (WvW every other day for a few hours), I will get it in 6 months and that’s even a maybe. And that’s silly.
“It all requires playing PvE”
If that’s what your complaint boils down to, it’s valid if not meshing particularly with the game’s design. Playing WvW alone is definitely not a good consistent source of gold (though the event rewards are the best in the game). If “playing normally” means WvW for a few hours every other day to you, then it will indeed take much longer to achieve things that require a lot of gold by playing normally.
It sounds like you’d vastly prefer WvW to utilize the sPvP schema of instant parity, which is not how it works and understandably disconcerting to a certain type of player. I wouldn’t mind a new static tier of three worlds competing with each other in WvW that allow you to create instant 80, max-stat characters like you get in PvP.
In essence, if all you want to do is WvW, you will indeed need to venture outside your comfort zone to obtain more gold.

So you don’t want to “farm”, you don’t want to wait to get it by playing normally.
What do you want then? This is the game, these are the ways one gets stuff by either setting it as a goal to get it fast or by normal playing whether it’s in PvE, WvW or PvP.
I already know you don’t wanna hear this but if you want what you want and want it now, buy gems and buy your stuff.
It’s very clear that each of us plays their own way but (and sorry for saying this) you sound like a kid in a store whose mom told him he could not have candy now but later after dinner…

If you want to play a ‘farming’ game there’s “Farmville”, otherwise the term has no place in a video game play ‘style’.
Its simple really, unless players wish to deal with uncontrolled inflation there needs to be a limit to how much gold is ‘in the game’. Gold going into (drops) the game needs to be less than or equal to Gold taken out of the game.
Those that focus their game play ‘style’ on extracting as much riches out of the game as possible just shift those riches out of the hands of the many into the hands of the few. This limits the amount of riches available to other players.
I could understand that this is more of a ‘style of play’ rather than abuse if Anet has not constantly ‘nerfed’ the DR of popular ‘farming’ events and locations.

1) So, all those years, people in every MMO who harvested drops or nodes to sell them have been doing it wrong. Got it.
2) Yes, inflation can result from the amounts of gold in the game; the prices of exotics has inflated; so has the price of ectos. Supply is only part of that equation, however. Yes, games have money sinks, but these do not “take out” an equal amount of gold to that provided by drops. Money sinks ablate the amount of in-game gold, they don’t come close to balancing it.
3) I might agree that TP players are making gold by shifting it from others to themselves. They are doing something similar to what commodities traders do irl. However, players farming Shelter/Pentitent are not taking gold out of your bank. This assumption presumes that there is an absolute limit to the amount of gold in the game, and that is just not true. If every player played more hours, and more efficiently, there would be more gold in the game.
4) The presented reasons for DR (bots) and for changing events like Plinx (they wanted people to experience other content, not just do Plinx every 10 minutes) do not match your assumptions. If ANet considered farming to be abusive, I doubt they’d be adjusting drop rates upwards (Champion/Vet adjustment, more heavy bags in Orr, level appropriate drops for higher levels playing in lower-level areas).
So you don’t want to “farm”, you don’t want to wait to get it by playing normally.
What do you want then? This is the game, these are the ways one gets stuff by either setting it as a goal to get it fast or by normal playing whether it’s in PvE, WvW or PvP.I already know you don’t wanna hear this but if you want what you want and want it now, buy gems and buy your stuff.
It’s very clear that each of us plays their own way but (and sorry for saying this) you sound like a kid in a store whose mom told him he could not have candy now but later after dinner…
The wait to play normally is fine, it shouldn’t have to take 6 months. I’m playing sparsely now because I would only get poorer or I break even (WvW).
I see the awful grind for what it is. This isn’t the first thread about this game having no rewards. If you’re going to drop crap loot for everything, then drop some decent silver so I can eventually get stuff off the AH.
Playing alone should be enough to fund basic needs, like to get a new set of exotic gear (which is I guess the norm) at a decent pace, a month tops. The game needs to drop more gold.
imo anet is keeping all mindless farmers in cursed shore.
they are happy there, cursed among the cursed risen.
when i go there i cant tell the difference between players and risen.
on a more serious subject;
thats why “tokens and laurels exist” for you to gear up.
and to answer to your point 1.
no they werent wrong in “other” mmos.
but they are wrong in gw2.
it aint a farming game imo.

you… cant get a set of exotic in a month of play if you focus on it?
im sad for you.
I’ve only been playing for around 2 months or so. I’ve bought 3 characters slots with in-game cash, have 2 80s(one I crafted to level) and I still have over 80g on my main character.
All I do is play the game. I level alts, do the dailies/events, and run dungeons when I feel like it. I’m on fractal level 10 and haven’t even done all of the dungeons yet(I just did Arah story and one path of HotW for the first time the past two days).
Running even one dungeon path in a day usually nets me a gold or two without trying. Sell what you get through playing(mats, globs, etc). Pretty easy really.
FYI you can try out builds/runes/sigils for free in the Heart of the Mists before spending any gold.
Test it against a target golem or jump in a hot join match to see how it plays.
Gear is not the same between PvE/WvW and PvP. What if you use Pow/Pre/Tuf gear (probably the most common WvW/PvE)? That gear doesn’t even exist in sPvP. Or what if you use orbs instead of runes? Even in using ‘identical’ gear, your totals will be different.

Not WvW solely no.
