I sent this email to ArenaNet yesterday and was advised to post something on the forum in the hopes that a developer might come across my “suggestions”.

I searched for a similar thread I could add this too, but either the search function hates me or it hasn’t been talked about in a while, so forgive me if it has been discussed before

I have never been on these forums, so please be gentle, lol!

Here goes:

“Cry Of Frustration”

“So we meet again,

I felt moved to write you this message after browsing through my wardrobe tonight. Today was the first time I ever created a male character (the scars are great!) and as I dressed him in my Arah armor I was shocked by the glory that was the male model of this particular armor set. When my female guardian prances around PVP arenas in nothing but an array of bones, held together by what I can only assume to be prehistoric gum, I don’t feel as intimidating and spectacular as I did when I put the same outfit on my male character.

Please, please, please make it possible for us females (real life females or those playing one of us in game) to choose between the bikini and bad-a versions of armors.

Now, I can hear you exclaim “But what if the players who create male characters start demanding bikinis in turn?”…the answer to that I don’t know, although I have seen some outfits that come close to that, I don’t believe it would necessarily be an issue. Female Asura as well as Charr enjoy the male “versions” of the most beautiful heavy armors in game and I have never heard a male Charr or Asura scream for iron bloomers.

While we are on the subject, I firmly believe the human females need a bit more variety, as far as their body types are concerned…at the very least, please balance out the healthiest body type to be available with corresponding proportions (I know, you know what I mean :o).

I love this game, but come on…Arah gear on a female with a skeleton holding their goods..nooo. Please consider an option to equip the “male” version of armors…would you storm into battle with a golden brazier that focuses all of the impact on your sternum…or leap into a brawl wearing a tiny non-skirt and a garter?…No, ArenaNet, you would not…

Respectfully yours,

Brui"—-

P.S. I decided to just post my original message because I didn’t feel like picking it apart and creating a list…sorry!…and thanks for reading!

This is a complaint in the mmo community as old as mmos have been around. Unfortunately it seems most developers think that there are no girls on the internet. To be fair girls aren’t the only minority anet ignores. RPers, Rangers and wvw.community are just as unimportant. The lich armor is kinda weird on girls. If you want BA armor I recommended cof armor + achievement armor. Also dry bones bottom + named exotic top is pretty intimidating. The sorrow dungeon armor is pretty gnarly looking too. Hope this helps!

Of course male players don’t complain about not having bikini’s or underwear, because when they want to wear them, they play female characters… which, arguably, are the only ones such clothes would look good on to begin with. If you take away the bikini’s for the female characters then you would start hearing some men complaining, lol.

That aside, your point is rather meek at best, as there are many full body armors for females, with, really the exception being light armor; which is really the sensual class in the game. Certainly it would be bad to bar women for being able to wear manly armor, but as five tenths of the game is aesthetics, it would likewise be a bad idea to remove this sensual type of armor as well. You have to remember, there are many types of players, and this game must tailor to as many different sects as possible. Surely even the female players like a sexy outfit every once and a while.

I suppose the best solution to this would be that not all the sexual armor be light class, but rather to have sensual and practical female armors for each class. But that would be a massive undertaking, requiring them to add a great number of new armors. As, if they simply alter the current sets, there will be many unhappy customers.

I will bump OPs like this every time. Would kill for option to have at least few armors looking like male versions, including Heritage light, Banded, Seer, Phalanx and more… Unfortunately, I think that’s not doable, the only hope is for the future sets being less gender differentiated, less boob cups, less boob windows, less randomly exposed body parts (Priory, OoW heavy).

The latest costume is just…. ugh, I thought Phalanx was bad. My fem asura can run cowered up from head to toe, with awesome animated parts (ribbons), but fem human ends up with a metal thong and her vital parts exposed. Yay.

No, No, No! Mummified flesh on the left! Dried bones on the right!

At least I assume they mean heavy armor since that’s discussed further down and I can’t see many people calling the medium and light Arah armors ‘skimpy’.

Since female heavy armor in general actually has a very good range of options from the entire body completely covered in plate mail (and presumably leather and/or cloth under that) to very revealing (and I’d actually say it’s the revealing end that’s lacking options) I assume this is more about the difference between the male and female versions. Which is also something that’s been discussed many, many times.

The short version is that they could never be completely identical because they have to go on different body types (less so for human and sylvari, very much so for norn, but true either way). They could be more similar but then it disappoints the people who want more variety. No one ever agrees, the thread slowly drifts off-topic into something like sexism and stereotypes in general or wild accusations about individual posters genders and preferences and sooner or later it gets locked or dies out. Then a month or so later the next one starts up.

Great idea but doubt it will happen. Look at most females in the game, look at Jory and Kas and how they portray them. One flirts with everyone to the point where you think she’s slept with most of DR, the other jokes about being naked under her illusion clothing, both are very pretty, their story of coming together was pretty forced and didn’t flow well. But we all know if they had made it two guys, people would have been like EWWW!

This is how game developers are, when it comes to females, they’re either eye candy, getting saved, kissing each other or running around in skimpy armor. Nothing is going to change either, if ever when it comes to gaming.

So the females have big breasts, just like the males have well formed bodies with muscles of steel. Aaand? Who cares, its a video game

The statement that all armor in this game for females is skimpy is simply not true.
Many armors are just different because they are designed to fit the corresponding body.
Why force equalisation where it doesnt make sense. They have way more important things to spend their development time on, the game is doing already very fine in that regard.

In my post I was simply asking for both options in skins, especially considering the huge difference in some sets (Arah heavy being a perfect example). I know there are many sets available that aren’t quite as exposing, but please, do they look anywhere near as cool as their male counterparts? Making both skins available would satisfy everyone.

Want to look like you lost half your armor in battle? Ok.

Want to look like you can smash down a wall with the sheer weight of your armor? Great!

At least you have a choice!

I am not looking to start a debate of skimpy versus non-skimpy…I know that will probably never change the way game armors are designed…but I believe having both options available would make this game a lot more interesting to a lot of people.

There is more than 1 set that cover everything, sure it is not all armor, but it shouldn’t be, cause gasp some of us like the somewhat skimpy armor… and not all of us are male (I’m not). Variation is key, but “prudes” will complain if even 1 armor shows a little skin and attack people that ask for something in the other direction.

I am not sure about making male versions avaiable for female characters… charr and asura are not really all that good an example seeing they don’t have the differences in body structure that humans (and norn and sylvari) have. Now I am not against the idea, more options are always welcome imo.

But in the end what I really want is more armor set, with even more variation in BOTH directions.

It’s not practical but it would be amazing. So many times I’ve found myself thinking ‘if I could have this top without the belt’ or ‘if I could just cut it off at this point it’d be perfect’. Then again when I went from GW1 to GW2 I found it amazing that the tops and shoulders were separate pieces, that alone made a huge difference.

What in the actual kitten kind of person would EVER use those dyes (human female version)?

That is a terrible picture to use for comparison (I’m not blaming it on you, it’s not your fault lol). The average person is going to immediately favor the male version just because of the disgusting fashion sense the person using the female set has.

The person who took the screenshot for the Wiki apparently.

Although I have to say for an armor gallery I think it’s useful. It might not be well coordinated but the fact that they chose 3 very different colours makes it easy to see which parts are affected by which dye channel, which is what you really need to know if you’re considering the set for yourself. They’re also light colours which makes it easier to see the pattern on the armor.

Whereas the male version is so dark it’s hard to make out what it actually looks like and I can’t even tell how many dye channels it has. At least two, but possibly 3 because some parts look darker, but that could just be the same dye on different materials.

Doesn’t look intimidating to me in the least. If I were fighting someone in that, I immediately see so many weakpoints. One good slash or arrow at either thigh which are fully revealed, or at her abdnomen which has plenty of showings as well, and she’ll bleed out.

There is a point to be made about armor that reveals skin – in one way it intimidates with the sense of “I don’t need protection!” but this usually works best with lumbering figures – of which, due to the design of female characters in GW2, just about none are (even female norn) – and in another way it would draw the enemy to trying to strike that exposed area, allowing you to better predict where they’ll try to strike, but most armor sets don’t work for that either due to so much skin being exposed you cannot properly predict from that.

I, for one, overall don’t mind skimpy armor. However, some just get silly especially when talking about the armor sets of GW2, the designers talked about balancing “just enough skin with just enough armor”.

Then again, given that Anet had the guts to add three lesbian couple*s* to the game, I’m still waiting for them to have the guts to openly sexualize a male character by giving them skimpy outfits.

Fixed for you. There’s Caithe/Faolain, Faolain/Sariel, and Kasmeer/Marjory.

This excludes the non-highlighted ones, of which we can see quite a few from sylvari (there’s one talking about her female lover parting ways in the northern end of the Grove, as one wants to explore (herself) while the other doesn’t (her lover)).

And yeah, I honestly don’t get why there aren’t such for males. Particularly amongst the norn cultural armor. It’s a lore plot point for them to be lacking in armor when going into battle – so why is heavy T3 male armor covering them from head to toe with no skin, while heavy T3 female gives plenty of skin and even shows her underwear?

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I have been patiently waiting for the gemstore to add an awesome looking light armor for my mesmer – I’m still waiting. I want her to look like she’s ready to kick butt – not go to the ball. It’s very time consuming to make armor that makes female look awe-inspiring.

You have any idea how long it took me to mix and match a medium armor set that made my thief look ready to kill? Quite a while. At least medium armor has several trenchcoat looking designs to pick from, all of which I liked. But it wasn’t the variety that was an issue, it was the designs in general. I’m always jealous of how a male toon looks, because it’s portrayed so well. They have flippin blades hanging everywhere.

My favorite leg-showing leg armour is the light Heritage legs, shows a little bit of tasteful thigh. Second to that is the light Zodiac legs paired with a non-revealing chestpiece. I know there’s others that show leg but not nearly as many compared to the boob tops. Need more thigh highs please. I was very disappointed that the ancestral outfit had a huge boob window but no focus on the legs.

But getting back on topic, I agree, there should be some option for females to wear the male versions, as well as more skimpy versions for males :P
Equal skimpiness, for males and females, and for all the body parts, not just boobs.

You know another thing comes to mind. Women don’t exactly wear plated armor in public but they do wear mini skirts, tube tops and other apparel that leaves little to the imagination. Then, when it’s mirrored in a video game suddenly it’s impractical and too revealing?

I understand completely how this subject can be controversial but I don’t understand why the real world seems to slip away in favor of a video game. If anyone wanted to see half naked women they’d have to look no further than their local shopping mall. Stop trying to replace life with video games… Don’t like unrealistic characters? Go outside. Don’t want to go outside? Don’t play a fantasy video game and go be a creep on Second Life. Because everyone knows simulators are just so much better… -Sarcasm-.

Oh come on. You seriously think all women wear that? Right now I’m in jeans and t-shirt. Irl I don’t wear skirts. They’re a nuisance and completely impractical.

I’ve seen guys go out jogging bare-chested, as much as women in mini skirts at the mall. So hello, where is the eye candy for the ladies?

Here he is!

Also i gotta say, I’m lucky to live right next to a college where all the boys jog year round with no shirts. It’s a nice life for a cougar like meself. Buahahaha.

We could use more in game eye candy. But I like looking at the females just the same.

I have no issue with skimpy armour in games. I am a girl, and I like to have a variety of my characters showing less and more skin. But I agree with the OP that having the alternative would be nice. However, I think GW2 do the whole ‘covered up’ thing quite well. There are a nice balance of revealing and non-revealing armours in GW2.

The OP was not saying skimpy armour = bad. They were saying that being able to choose which you want would be nice. It would involve some work, but I don’t think it’s impossible.

I have to admit that made me laugh because, very unusually for me I am wearing a skirt (just above knee length, so not quite a mini skirt) and a pretty low cut top and all day I’ve been thinking it’s weird that for some people, including some of my friends, this would be totally normal but I feel 1/2 naked.

On the other hand I wasn’t planning on going into battle today. Unless you count trying to get in and out of the supermarket in less than 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. :P

But back to GW2 I’m very much in the camp that says everyone (all races, all genders, all professions) should have a choice of armor sets from full coverage to barely there, with plenty of variety to choose from across the spectrum. I actually think GW2 is pretty good in this respect, the one area I’d say needs more work is skimpy male armor.
