So for the longest of times, there has been this Guardian Shout ability called “Retreat!”.

I’m sure you’ve heard of it, I mean, it is screamed at the top of our lunges after all, but how often do you see it used to actually run away?

It grants an Aegis and Swiftness Buff, which is perfect! Perfect for a head on charge into battle! A Guardian is a warrior of faith! A Paladin of Courage! One does not run from battle when things become grim, for these are the moments that define our faith! Define our cause! You Stand your Ground! Hold the Line! THEN CHARGE TO BATTLE!

So, just saying that it could use a name change.

It might have to do with the fact that there’s a warrior skill called “charge,” but I agree. It doesn’t seem particularly inspirational. However, sometimes a well-timed retreat means you live to fight another day, rather than die in a blaze of glory.

It made sense in GW1 because it only gave the speed boost when there were dead allies in earshot.

Did anyone ever consider that maybe when the Guardian yells “Retreat!”, that he/she is in fact screaming it at an enemy as a demoralizing tactic?

I mean, if someone comes running at me with a magical glowing sword and screams “Retreat!”, something is about to go down, and I might be inclined to turn and run.

It’s not exactly a terrifying scream, for one, and secondly, I don’t recall ever having seen an enemy yell, “Retreat!” at a foe, nor do I foresee any foe taking that as an order for him to do so before it is too late.

Just a suggestion. The skill description never specifically said the guardian is the one who has to retreat, so I am thinking outside of the box.

It doesn’t have to be terrifying to be effective. Nor does an enemy have to use it on you for it to be a thing.

As petty as it sounds, I never have Retreat on my skillbar for precisely this reason. It’s a great skill and really useful, but I just can’t deal with my charrdian acting like Logan.

And been up before : https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/guardian/Suggestion-Change-Retreat-Shout

When I said…

The Guardian “Retreat” should of course have been named for another Paragon skill, namely either “Incoming!” or “Make Haste”

and now, with hindsight, I see that it’d have been even better to loan the skill called “Charge!” from the GW1 warrior.

a good GUARDIAN won’t let his friends die ever so he helps them letreat if things goes wrong.

so there is NO issue with that name for a guardian.
your trying to play your guardian like a selfish warrior. thats why that skill name bothers you.

its a GUARDIN.

A well-timed retreat is the most valuable tool a military has.
The fact that we’re using it “wrong” does not negate this.

I agree with Zoltreez, the guardian is not a crazed warrior charging in for the glory. The guardian is on the frontline to help his allies. If a retreat will safeguard his allies to fight another day then that is what he/she must do.

That said, it does seem silly when using it to get your forces into battle quicker. When a skill can be used in different situations, it seems silly to give it a name that suggests it must be only used in a certain way. “Make Haste”, in my opinion, would have been a better name, as it can be used to charge into battle and out of it.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

I remember when I started playing this game and I heard that in WvW, I started running away from the enemies thinking it was our commander calling us to retreat. It’s a horribly name shout skill.

I have to agree 100% with the OP…..there are times I would have LIKED to use to to run (but I already used it to convert conditions to boons).

Most widely used but misnamed skill, IMO.
