Guesting is Coming
I cant play with my friends from the US? Whats the point then, seriously.
This is so disappointing I can’t even begin to express it. I was waiting to play with my US buddies since launch and this is what we get?
Lame.
I’ve been separated twice or thrice already from my friends cause of the NA/EU division, and i’ve been waiting for the guesting feature to solve this so i can play happily as before.
But to my surprise this is not happening. I get the same features (since i only use guesting for dungeons, which was already working for same regions) and i even get now a fee to change worlds, impeding me to play with my friends.
You can see my dissaproval on all of this, but i will state it clearer: This guesting feature needs to go further or I can’t play anymore this game that i love. And i’m not alone in this situation.
Just a thought; if US / EU traffic is feared because huge, maybe guesting could be limited to guild buddies?
That way, if in the same guild, guesting US/EUcould be possible, and the amount of traffic maybe more predictable?
What a shame I really enjoyed playing with other regions in gw1 now it seems we are taking a step back. It becomes difficult to recruit players for fractals during off hours if we could play with other regions it would help. I really see no point of this guesting feature other than if you can’t access someones overflow…
We all know if they start working on this is will take over a year to implement;/
If possible, it’d be absolutely awesome to right click and guest straight from the friends list.
One of the cool feature of this guesting is the “NO Friends needed” for guesting. What you suggest restricts players even worse then the NA/ EU restriction
Yeah, I’m extremely disappointed. The much-vaunted guesting implementation will, in fact, make sure that I will never be able to play with my Australian friend. I couldn’t feel more disillusioned with the obvious community disconnect right now.
Paid server transfers and no ability to guest in WvW will NOT prevent spying in WvW. Large and highly competitive guilds on one server will just band together to pay for their spy to transfer. It punishes the sincere players who just want to have fun together.
And really when it comes down to it, who cares about trying to prevent spying? All is fair in love and war.

Why would they do such a complicated thing when they can just buy a second account for their guild leader to run on a second box and join the enemy server with? rolls eyes
I’m just disappointed I’m not going to be able to get on Tarnished Coast before the transfer restrictions kick in. I really want to get involved in the RP community. I’m going to have to figure out an alternative to TC quickly.

Why think in an “or” manner? I’m merely posing an addition to the feature with that idea, and not suggesting removal of the method they currently intend to implement.
Apologies for the misunderstanding, I could have been much, much clearer there.

Sad to see ArenaNet going back on promises and preventing the many, many people who have cross-region ties from enjoying the game with their friends.
I really feel you should rethink releasing this feature until you can release it in a properly completed state.

^ This. 10 million times over. For anyone having cross-continent ties, the new ‘feature’ will be a huge step BACKWARDS compared to the status quo. I would go as far saying cross-continent guesting is one of THE most important applications for guesting in the first place, as many of us want to have their home in our respective region, but have friends on the other side of the pond.
And don’t tell us it can’t be done, ANet. You did it in GW1, too.
I really don’t have problem with the upcoming transfer fee I can stay in one server for the rest of my life, no problem with that. But personally I see no point in guesting without being able to visit my friends in europe servers.
I thought whole point of guesting was cross-region…

The sad thing about this game is that when your looking at the ability to play with your friends this game is indeed going backwards. Not just compared to guild wars 1 but also compared to guild wars 2. At launch we where able to transfer to any location at any time and play with our American friends.
A few months later we can only transfer once a week and now we are going to have to pay a fee if we want to visit a server on the other side of the pond. They are talking about giving us the tools to play together but they are doing the opposite, they keep adding these roadblocks to fracture the community. A really sad state of affairs.
Glad they’re finally doing this and make it cost gems to transfer servers as well! With people having the ability to transfer servers every 7 days it’s turned two of the servers I’ve been on into ghost towns! People have been abusing it for WvW far too often. =/ Not to mention the flux of people makes the market go completely whacky as well. I just wish they’d implemented this patch before Isle of Janthir started becoming a ghost town too. =(

So basically with the guesting system, you will be able to play on whatever server you want to play to run dungeons and PvE.
Euuuh … sorry but can’t we already do that?
During the 4+ months that the game exists, we have adapted to play with each other. Now you are just telling us that we can continue to do it. What is the point in the guesting system then?
It seems like everything about this guesting feature is done for WvW and you did not think about PvE. What you present to us today, we already have it.
EU to NA and NA to EU guesting was what people awaited. You just gave us a pretty speech full of nothing. EU players will still be in empty servers at night and so will NA players. Preventing both regions from playing.
I love this game but I am extremely disappointed in this guesting feature. If you need to make us wait to be guested in a different region that’s fine. Just do not force us to choose between our EU and NA friends for the sake of WvW balance.
I hope you guys will read this thread and explain the the why, the how and future improvements.

Yeah, well, you can blame the people who abused the weekly transfers for WvWvW purposes. It’s always the jerks that ruin it for the many.

My suggestion would be that, if you’re getting up against the deadline, you could transfer to a different NA server that is not full so often like TC is, and guest over for your RP needs.
Since dungeons and fractals are indeed instanciated… It shouldn’t be too hard to allow cross-continent playing for them?
We would loose the epic moments of watching vistas with europeans, but at least we would still have the most important.
And for dungeon instances, please Anet don’t tell me you have any technical issues…

I can blame them for no NA-EU guesting? I don’t think that has much to do with WvW cheaters. It has a lot more to do with ANet, for whatever reason, dropping the ball.
Maybe there are technical reasons, maybe there are time/deadline reasons, I don’t know. But the fact is that this is not the guesting that the Guild Wars 2 community was promised, it’s not complete, and it’s going to make the game a lot less fun for a lot of people.

Not being able to guest in different regions defeats the purpose of guesting to a very large degree. Why wasn’t the fact this wouldn’t be possible announced at launch? It would have changed the way people and guilds chose servers and regions to a large degree. The cross server/region guild I am a part of was created because it was thought when guesting was implemented we could play together. This essentially divides our guild, and the player base in general
I’m pretty sure the whole “Can’t guest from NA to EU and vice-versa” has a really good reason not to exist. I think there are laws about that.
Anyway, you guys are never happy D :<
Yeah, well, you can blame the people who abused the weekly transfers for WvWvW purposes. It’s always the jerks that ruin it for the many.
The abuse was stopped by making transfers having a 7 day cooldown. People can’t just jump to the winning server all the time anymore, like they did when transfers were unrestricted. Large guilds leaving their servers for greener pastures – the new ‘feature’ isn’t going to stop that at all. It’s not like it would now magically stop bandwagoneer guilds to migrate to a different server once in a while, no?
I understand the limitation on WvWvW. With free transfers, the game has already been plagued with groups/guilds that hop to ‘where the win is’. When you see graphs that belong 90% to one side, it’s frustrating to the worlds that can’t handle being zerged and suffer for it outside of WvW. With open guesting, people could group up on other server groups to throw off bonuses or even team up against their own worlds to give super bonuses for PvE. Short of it is, it’s too easily abused. Besides, the purpose of World v World is you representing your own server in global battle, and it should stay that way. As long as I can sPvP or tPvP with friends on other servers, I’m satisfied.
Obviously the biggest frustration is the wall between locations. I too come from an international guild. We want to keep daily play on local servers to keep lag down, but we also want to be able to play together. While guesting is still a step up from most MMOs where you can never see friends period unless you have a paid transfer, it still falls short of all hopes and expectations.
I will hope, but for now I still look forward to guesting. While I wont be able to play with all my friends, guesting still opens a few more doors for others in NA.
Well, GW1 used to be divided into regions as well, for a long time actually. Anet merged regions some time after NF release, if i recall it correctly. So there’s hope, but… But it is indeed very sad news, one of my favorite things about GW1 was the fact that everyone were playing together, in both PvE and PvP. Oh, well.
Since my friends have found guilds that suit them, and so have I, already we don’t want to change. And since we’re in different server parks … my friends and I CAN’T play together. If we’d been told that this was the case from the beginning, we could have tried to find something in the same server park. But we didn’t know that it would be an issue. I’m very, very unhappy about this.
Well, GW1 used to be divided into regions as well, for a long time actually.
That’s not quite correct, since cross-continent guesting was enabled from day 1 in GW1 – it was called “International Districts”. Only actual moving between home territories was restricted.
What happens to guild influence earned while I’m on a ‘guested’ server?
My home is Ferguson’s Crossing (don’t laugh). I plan on going to Tarnished Coast for RP stuff (again, no laughing). If I do an event (earning my guild two influence) or finish a dungeon (earning my guild ten influence), does my guild, who is still on FC get the influence or will it go to a ‘shadow’ guild on TC?
Well, without guesting across regions, guesting is pretty much pointless for me now.
I hope you fix that one day.

I think that moving to an international server will be fine with a lot of people. The only complaint here is that we just can’t play with our friends and have to choose, which sucks.

Let me explain to you why you cannot guest on worlds in another region.
There are two databases: European player data is stored in our European datacenter, American player data is stored in our American datacenter. This is to ensure that people in these regions can still properly play in case there is an issue with the connection between the datacenters.
When you do a world transfer from the US to the EU (and vice versa) your player data is transferred from one datacenter to the other. This is not the case with guesting, as you are still “registered” on your home world.
I understand that some of you are disappointed that you cannot guest on worlds in another region, but considering the complexity of internet routing, our main priority is to ensure that players have as much of an uninterrupted game experience as possible, which is the reason why we have two datacenters.
On another note: I will try to get an answer to the guild influence question that has been posted a couple of times.
Unlike all the debbie downers here, I’m very happy for this update. Kudos to Arenanet. I’m looking forward to the other improvements on the 28th.

I really don’t understand why we can’t guest across regions. Could we please get some official response on why? Could I pay for the option? Because I would.
This was such a huge selling point for me. I play on an EU server but work really odd hours and often times just want to play with more people on certain days when I am on late at night in EU.
I’m just disappointed I’m not going to be able to get on Tarnished Coast before the transfer restrictions kick in. I really want to get involved in the RP community. I’m going to have to figure out an alternative to TC quickly.
Even though TC (my server) is often ‘full’, that is usually only so during the afternoon/evening US time and on weekends. If you look in the early hours or first thing in the (US) morning, during the week, transfers are generally not a problem. I’ve given quite a few guildies this advice and they managed to get here.

Actually you could always play with other people all across the world. They had international districts where you could team up. If I recall the only region you couldnt do this was China.
it is really the most shortcoming of this guesting features where it can not make a platform for two data centres server to meet and play together.

Fine – then send our character to the other datacenter while guesting, together with a “can’t WvW here!” flag. Come on, you guys did it that way in GW1, and now, almost a decade later you’re telling us it cannot be done and expect us to buy that? Sorry, but no.
Alternative suggestion: Re-enable unrestricted free world transfers, but everyone has to pick a “WvW home server” (since the entire reason behind the transfer restriction is indeed WvW, there is no other). Cross-continent transfers do already work, so no work needed to implement that at all. The “WvW homes server” cannot be changed unless with a huge amount of gems. Entering WvW is only possible when the character is on their actual WvW server. Problem solved and everyone will be happy.

Look 3 posts up.
One thing that could help this whole issue, at least in part, is this:
As in WoW, EQ and other similar games, you could have multiple toons on the same account on different servers and regions. Why not here?
Martin, I think that everyone understands that you guys are doing that so that everyone can be able to play properly. I personally live in the USA and play on an European data center just for playing with my friends. I am yet to see lags. But this is not the point.
As people say, if you could come up with a compromise most people would be happy with it. An international server for instance, with no WvW attached to it, only PvE. You could also make a paid option for it. You will still have to play in your WvW base home world but you could transfer for PvE purpous for what? 40 bucks a year?
Just do not force people to play on empty servers at night. I do not want to play a game empty of people and it is just not the game you guys created. Provide us with a viable alternative and I am sure a lot of people will actually accept it.
PS: CaptainFabulous.8410 your post made me laugh thank you =p

If the solution were that easy I suspect it would have been done that way. Why do you assume Anet is lying to you? GW1 was a completely different game than GW2. You cannot expect things to always work in the same manner.
There are many reasons why your suggestions are bad one. If it were “just that easy” they would do it. But they can’t. It’s something that you and others are just going to have to accept.
If you want to play with your EU friends you can always transfer to an EU server, and then back to a NA server to play with them.

Ah, thank you, i stand corrected then.
Well, that’s disappointing, that makes guesting useless to me. :(
Now I have to choose between being able to play with my local friends or the friends in my US guild.
I hope they change this later so we can guest on other country servers. We have friends from UK who would like to play with us and was waiting for guesting but now that they announced guesting wont work like this we feel like whats the point. I mean granted people who have other friends from other worlds will be able to guest with each, but for some of us who have friends in other countries… Why!?
To answer the question about guild influence:
You will gain guild influence on the world you are guesting on.

I promise I will never post a single note about interrupted game if I am able to play with my friends QQ. Is there maybe a plan if future that will allow us to play with friends across regions?
To answer the question about guild influence:
You will gain guild influence on the world you are guesting on.
So what is the advantage of Guesting over, say, a transfer that can’t participate in WvW (which is what we have now, right?)?
I can go to a different server to play with friends but not progress my Guild in any way. What you have done is made the community make a choice between Guild and Friends. Is that truly how a “Global Community” is supposed to work?
