So let me get this straight…..you can tell me it is just one day as if it is not a big deal, but I cannot tell you it is just an off button as if it is not a big deal? Instead of putting in a simple command to turn it off I have to go through and change my settings then put up with the stupid arm thing I don’t want to se for a day. Sometimes that simple command, isn’t so kitten simple. As a developer, I know this quite well. Stop saying it’s simple when you have no god kitten clue what their code looks like or how it actually functions on the back end.

You do have an “out” so to speak, just change your kitten graphics settings. Takes 30 seconds to change the settings, it would take you that long to flip open the screen and hit a freaking toggle.

When I first logged on, I didn’t think “plane” I thought cross, or someone nailed to a cross. Given the holiday coming up, I could see a lot of people finding this offensive.

Correct me if I’m wrong (as I havn’t really gone through the entire ToS), is there not something in there about religion or religious names or even slander? I mean if we can’t even elude to certain things that go against the ToS, how exactly can they put something like this forth (if Religious depictions are indeed against the ToS)?

Hahaha THIS! We need this so badly. So many people get uptight about April’s Fools. We will have this thread EVERY SINGLE YEAR, about some entitled fella/lady, crying about “YOU RUINED THE GAME ArenaNet!” One day ..out of the entire year. Talk about being toxic.

Well, I thought it was funny for about 5 minutes, like most April Fool’s jokes or pranks. When something goes on and on and on, it usually ceases to be funny (one of the rules of comedy). I find the look and sounds annoying, and I can’t see well enough to play, so I won’t be playing today but will be checking to see when the joke is finally turned off.

What I may do is see if the first Guild Wars is still going and get reacquainted with one or two of my characters there.

I am so offend! I can’t stop shaking my fists in the air, I’ve had to type this with my elbows which has taken over an hour.

An hour I won’t get back Arenanet!

Given the recent event and given that the event is still present in the media, the idea was suboptimal. I would suggest taking out the april fool immediately and write an ingame apology.

Ok. understandable. I was personally really enjoying this one. I don’t watch the news so i was unaware of the plane crash. After knowledge of the plane crash i now want to know if i can buy a gem store item to keep flying my plane.

I personally don’t believe they were going to just delete the data and sounds they recorded just because there was a plane crash. how would you feel if they deleted a living story section just because of something in the real world that has a similarity to it?

This whole airplane crash comparison is ridiculous.

The Vitruvian Man —Da Vinci pose-- is probably the default player model pose. They had the aviator cap already in the game, then some anet guy said “hey I can make a septa old timey like filter effect, It’ll take like 5 minutes.”
I don’t play with sound so I don’t know if they added plane sounds… I watch movies while I play GW2… after a few thousand hours you don’t really need the game sound or even pay much attention

You may say Anet did a lazy job and made it very annoying, But hey they did something and it is only April Fools day.

Sorry, it being only 1 day doesn’t make it less annoying. People suggesting that people complaining around being dramatic are just white knighting. It is not unreasonable to want to be able to play the game they paid for in a normal state on any day.

The effort it takes to make a toggle off for a one day joke is not reasonable but the effort to make this one day joke is? Thats some backwards thinking.

This was the most troll thing anet has done so far. Bobbleheads wernt bad. I could of delt with the arms up. But the sounds? Holy crap, that was really annoying after abound 5 minutes. I shouldn’t have to tweak my settings and miss out on normal game play and dialog for a April fools prank.

If Anet’s goal was to get people to log off for April fools they did a good job. My guild was at like less than half the activity it usually is. People logged off for the night in under a hour after saying “cant play like this, see you tomorrow”.

This is just my feedback. Alot of the people I spoke with had the reaction of “lol thats funny, now how do I turn it off?” I just hope it gets turned off around the same time it got turned on yesterday.

IMO “Playing airplane” is a good idea, but badly implemented. And the timing was bad, but I think that was an unfortunate coincidence. I really don’t think that avatars acting like a child innocently “playing airplane” is meant to be a reminder of, or a poke at, recent airplane disasters.
With a few fixes, I think “playing airplane” would make a good gem store item, and a much better April Fool’s Day event.
“Playing airplane” is problematic in many ways. Mostly because it’s mandatory/global. Why didn’t they just make it happen in towns, or better yet – email everyone a toy airplane that for 24 hours would let you “play airplane” when equipped? Two additional things would need to be fixed. Instead of being stuck in a “T-pose” constantly, your arms would go up only when running, and out of combat. Also, it would be nice if the flicker was an option for the toy. I think that these three changes would have negated the vast majority of problems that people have with “playing airplane”.
Please make this a gem store item for the people who want it.(I think the gem store item should be permanent, not a 24 hour thing.)
The “Old Time Movie Filter” was well implemented, but many things in this game are color-coded, and can’t be seen properly in this mode. Also, any time you put that much flicker on screen, it’s going to give a percentage of people eyestrain, headaches, or worse problems if they have certain medical issues. The flicker should definitely be optional if this becomes a gem store item.
The constant “T-pose” – this is just indefensible. It’s not how little kids “play airplane”. And if your arms came up only while running (and out of combat) it would resolve many busted combat animations, obscured PvP tells, awkward gathering animations, etc… It would probably greatly cut down on “crucifix pose” accusations. Because everyone wouldn’t be standing around, creepily stuck in that pose, which resembles but is not a crucifix pose. And I think that if it more closely resembled an actual kid “playing airplane”, it wouldn’t remind people so much of recent airplane crashes.
The death music was fun. I though it was very reminiscent of the time period that they were trying to evoke.
Once again, I think that this would be a great gem store item, especially with a few fixes.

There’s no way ANet could have known about the recent plane tragedies when they created the content for today. And, as others have said, there are tragedies happening everyday. Anything they had created containing vehicles of any kind could be given the same view.

I see this content as a kind of tribute to the old movies of the 30’s and 40’s… the sepia, the scratches and film flaws running vertically and speckling on the screen, and the music when a character dies. All reminiscent of the old movies.

Bad things happen all the time. They happen to me, they happen to you, they happen all over the world, and probably to any other living creature out there in the rest of the cosmos.

For this to be insensitive, it would have to be intentionally aimed at that tragedy. Like one of those insensitive jokes in that Mock The Week TV show.

But it is not. It’s based on an old meme from the first days of GW2.

Of course you may see some relation even if there’s none if the tragedy struck you closer, but that is a problem in your side, not ANet’s fault. You don’t have the tools to cope with the tragedy, and that makes you stay on the defensive.

Unless you seek professional medical assistance (Psicologists have been assigned to help any victims of the tragedy), I’m afraid there’s only one solution left:

• Watch the entire works of Monty Python, starting with Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.

Although Monty Python are a comedy group, their works are known to help all sorts of patients suffering from loss, depression and other mental issues. Not only comedy helps forgetting bad things for a moment and let your brain recover a little from being dipped in a “sad juice” of neurotransmitter related to those issues, but they also show lessons of life such as this one

The bubbleheads was way more annoying than this, and nobody circlejerked about it last year. Disable post processing and the biggest part of it is gone. Still can’t play? take the day off and go do something else, we don’t care that your immersion is ruined for 5 more hours

What the kitten are you talking about? Did I say that I relate the joke to a plane crash? NO. I hate the effects – the brown kitten, the hands, the noises. Everything about this joke is just stupid. And a whole day? Lol

It is very insensitive. My characters are splayed out like the scene from Titanic, and its a huge reminder of those 3 hours of my life I will never get back. Too soon, Anet.

I didn’t say I was a game developer. I said I was a developer. Specifically, I’m a java / sql developer. Depending on which project I’m on changes what I’m working on. My current project I’m doing the data modeling and the sql reporting. I think the project I start Monday is a subscription management platform. Don’t have all the details on that one yet. Supposed to meet my team members and work on getting integrated tomorrow.

This is just a simple – and, for many of us – enjoyable April Fools Day joke. For posters on this forum to try and associate it in any way with the recent tragedy is insulting and inflammatory, at minimum.

It is really easy to draw lines between things that, in reality, have nothing to do with each other. For example, different races fight against each other every day in GW2 pvp, but I don’t think anyone sees that as a statement about, or allusion to, racial strife in the real world.

I think we are seeing a lot of these posts because people don’t like the joke (which is okay) but realize simply stating that wouldn’t have the same impact as trying to incite moral outrage (which is ridiculous in this case – its just a simple April Fool’s Day joke).

Having players stick their arms out to the side and giving the screen a 1950s aviation film feel isn’t a social statement or allusion to anything – it’s just a fun little joke (which will be gone later today anyway).

I think if people would have to take all tragedies into account the world would be a place full of depressed people. Bad things happen all the time, 32,000 chickens had to be ‘destroyed’ recently here because some were infected with a disease but because they aren’t humans it’s not important enough to make a fuss. However, out of the 6-7 billion people 130+ die and it’s too important that we have to keep it into consideration for an april fool’s. It may be harsh but the world just doesn’t work that way, for those that have lost loved ones it is a sad time. But that’s life and death is part of that, whichever form it may take. If you feel offended you should just take a step back and remember that nobody at ArenaNet is trying to make fun of you. It’s coincidental as this joke was likely prepared way ahead of the crash.
