Guild wars....The end is nigh?
It’s 3 years old and its showing it’s age. It’s definitely getting stale and will eventually die. If the expansion doesn’t live up to the hype then GW is dead.
It’s getting stale because we haven’t got new actual content to play for ages. Once it goes back to the regular release schedule after hot everything will be fine.
Is Guild Wars 2 dead (October 3, 2012 post. The game is about one month old at this point)
The forum (know it all) prophets have spoken. All the games are dying. Gloom and despair upon us all. There is no hope.

You know, I think I should set up a saved post on my iPad for THE GAME IS DYING threads, listing a series of selected posts from over the years and from multiple games, just for this type of thread.
ANet may give it to you.
gw2 has been slowly dying since 2013, its not a secret, yeah the expansion has hype and stuff but after 2 days people will have seen everything it has to offer and leave again.
some will stay just to troll and kitten, but once wildstar goes free to play a lot will jump over, leaving just a sour, salty little group of players that’ll ruin it for everyone else :p
This game has always been a care bear game lol. You want it to change now all of a sudden? Btw making a game more challenging doesn’t make it any less care bear. It just makes it more fun for the care bears who play. Pssst I am a care beer and proud!
Wait .. is this a hidden “Open PvP will save the game” thread ? o.O
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Guild Wars 2 is not a failure. It has made lots of money and allowed the team that made it to be paid for a long time. So far, Anet haven’t done any downsizing, rather, they seem to be always looking for new people.
GW2 isn’t the WoW killer some expected it to be, but that was always an unrealistic expectation.
GW2 isn’t exactly what people wanted and/or expected it to be, but it is still, to many of its players, the ONLY MMO they would consider playing at all. It’s not exactly what I wanted it to be, only about 80%, but that is still enough that I’d never even consider other MMOs that aren’t like it.
GW2 is fine.

Mostly every MMO released in the last years had started dying after the first 30 days.
And even WoW is dying since release of Cataclysm.
And really .. Wildstar the second try ? Bot sure if you are sarcastic ^^

I don’t think my reasons are poor at all, they are personal reasons to me and enough reason to start me looking elsewhere for gaming. The discussion was if you believed the end of GW was nigh, I personally think it is.
I’d have to whole-heartedly disagree with you. This game is still going well and strong and will be for a long time to come. I’ve been playing since beta and it keeps me coming back every day -no MMO except my first one 13 years ago has been able to do that. Guild Wars 2 will be around for many more years. I’m sorry to hear that you might be leaving, but I’m willing to bet you’ll be back.

Everquest put out a new expansion, Nov 11, 2014. Presumably the devs did that because people play. Not much reason otherwise. Supposedly Ultimate online is working on an expansion.

ANet enjoys experimenting with the MMO genre. GW having no monthly fees in an era that every MMO had a subscription is the prime example.
For GW2 they tried to change up the notion of content expansion by having a world where events happened for a limited time and then was over. To give the player the feeling that they are involved in world shaping events.
And here was the problem. In GW those kind of events were told in instances that every player could do at their own pace. But GW2 was an open world that all players co-existed in. That takes the control of doing that story out of the hands of each player. Now players who want to crunch through the story as fast as possible couldn’t because it had to paced for the slower more casual players. Also new players end up coming in someway in the middle. And if RL meant you couldn’t play for a period of time you missed out the story entirely.
Living Story is a neat idea on paper, a world that changes around the player based on events occurring in the world but players didn’t like that they had no control of the pace.
Season 2 was better by putting the story back into instances but it still paced out the delivery over months than having a single content drop of the entire story or an entire zone. The it’s free if you log in during the chapter’s first two weeks was also a mix bag. Yes the barrier is very low, a login, but the $2.50 unlock cost for a handful of instances and a slow map reveal, no. Again it hurt new players and players who for whatever reason couldn’t play when the chapter was free.
As for the silly notion that the game is a financial disaster. Moving from new account sales to gem shop sales was always going to cause a steep drop off in income from the first few quarters of the game to a more steady state income. Players seem to overlook that GW2 is still earning $80 million a year which places it 2nd or 3rd, depending how the previous 12 months went, in NCSOFT’s stable of MMOs, easily the best performing western MMO NCSOFT ever had by a large margin. And if we were back in the era of subscription MMOs, $80 million a year would put the game population between 440,000 to 550,000 paying players which isn’t too shabby even now.
We are hitting a content drought as the Dev team is pushing to get HoT out by this holiday season. I will guess it’s taking longer than planned. The player base is bored and somewhat angry, but there’s always some faction of players angry over one thing or another.
- The un-telegraphed karma change with enchanted boosters gut punched one group who used them almost exclusively as karma boosters.
- The revamp trait skill system once again knocked over the apple cart on some player’s favorite overpowered builds.
- The one week WvW golem event to attract players who never played WvW ticked off the WvW faithful.
- The push for 2FA before an influx of new players due to HoT is generally a good thing but there seems to be issue with pestering long time players when the announcement said that for them, the system would not be mandatory.
It’s annoyance by a thousand paper cuts. Since way more players go to a forum to complain than praise, the boards have gone fairly negative. Some of it is justified. Some players are reaching for any annoyance as a reason they are upset (such as the annual Anniversary Sale).
Oh well. The end isn’t nigh, it’s just more players are more disgruntled than normal.
RIP City of Heroes

very well said and true if Anet keeps going the way they are . and the lack of information about what is going to be in hot. which i have not gotten yet waiting for the info to come out. still on that. but the way they are going. it is not good .
incase you may have missed some info on H.O.T

Also Anet will not tell us everything going into H.O.T as they like the players to explore and discover things for themselves without Anet spoiling everything. Also they are going to give us more info next weekend PAX event.

Guild Wars 2: Interview with Colin Johanson
“Guild Wars 2 has been a monumental next step for us as a studio from the original Guild Wars. Really, it’s surpassed nearly all of our expectations and it has allowed us to grow our studio extensively as well. There’s really no better barometer for a game franchise’s success than to be able to say that we’ve continued to grow the talent around it and the resources that are being put into it. When I started working on the Guild Wars franchise we had around 50 folks, we’re up near 300 now and continuing to grow due to the success of Guild Wars 2.You only get to grow like that when your game is extremely healthy – which is a long way of saying: I’m very happy with the state of Guild Wars 2 today, and knowing it’s only going to get better with Heart of Thorns is very exciting to think about for our future.
(Snip)
So why more challenging content now? Simply put – it’s what our players have been asking for – and we agree with them that it will make Guild Wars 2 a deeper and more compelling game experience. We don’t have issues retaining players, and we think providing more content they are excited about will only be better for us in the long run."
By the way, WoW is dying too. I read it in a thread on their forum.
very good point,s
Rappelz is a WAAAAY worse game, way greedier company behind it, way more ‘stab you in the back’- patches (aka less loot, more grind), poor quality control, bugs everywhere, worse graphics for certain, way more forced to use cash shop (that game is actually pay to win, 5000 dollar at least if you want the best pet + equipment). The playerbase has slowly shrinked But, even now 6 years after I left it: STILL ALIVE.
Guess how many ‘rappelz is doomed’ threads, had to be (forcefully) closed, ever since. They all were wrong so far
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.
As for people saying the game isn’t making money, I’d say 7 million a month is up there in the MMO arena. I think people who think this game isn’t making money haven’t been following the reports.
Really, Vayne? Is that what you are claiming now?
Per NCSoft’s finantial report, we can see the GW2 earnings. GW2 made 22.470.000.000 Korean won in the second quarter of 2015, or 7.490.000.000 Korean won per month… And that’s not 7 million US dollars.
I think you haven’t been following the reports.
And “up there in the MMO arena”?
Let me give you some perspective: can you guess how much is this in comparison with a certain MMORPG called WoW?
“Ah, WoW is an exception!” – sure it is. So let’s compare with some other MMORPGs: it’s more or less one fourth of what Lineage 1, a game from 1998, makes. It’s less than Blade & Soul, a game that hasn’t even been released in the West yet. It’s almost the same as Aion, which has widely been acknowledge as a failure in the West.
I think you need to look up “up there” in the dictionary. It doesn’t mean what you think it means.
Have the sales increased over last quarter? A slightly bit, sure. Which must be disappointing, considering how the 2nd quarter of 2015 includes the beginning of HoT’s prepurchase, which ArenaNet must be counting on to save themselves… Is that how little HoT will sell?
Anyone else foresee in the near future, the end of guild wars? I wouldn’t like to see the end but when shallow, uninteresting, unrewarding, frustrating game play take over, it’s time to leave the sinking ship I’m afraid.
I wish they would put the bleeding, diseased and shambling animal that is Guild Wars 2 out of it’s misery. I am afraid, however, that they will milk the cow dry, skin it and sell all the organs and bones for profit untill it can finally be put to rest. Maybe exploit the soul too for eternal torment…
I quit years ago and I am quite happy that I did, the whole game has become a joke and not one of the funny variety.

If you quit “years ago” you can’t have played it for very long being that it’s only just about 3 years old now. Did you really give it a good chance to prove itself to you?
No, no its not OP. People said and still say GW1 was dead or going to die for years, and its still going and brining in new players, have a look at the player helping player forum. People have been saying since launch that GW2 is dead. It’s still here. Going by my guild alone, and the amount of Maguma trailblazer titles and Revenant stomps I see, alot of people have bought HoT. GW2 is not going anywhere, any time soon. And by soon I mean the next 10 years or so, see GW1 for reference. And as another person has already said, B2P games don’t die.

They are poor; the reasons you leave the game are not necessarily the same as the reasons the game will fail.
I quit the game for almost a year when Traits 2.0 + NPE was around.
They finally fixed traits and now I’m playing again… casually… but I am “back”.
Every week or so I get really close to leaving for good when I gather up all my rare weapons and flush away my dreams down the Mystic Toilet.
The RNG in this game is absolutely miserable… 4 Rares should give 1 exotic 100% of the time. 4 rares is a very generous trade-off for 1 exotic…

That would be equivalent to 450-570K monthly subscription players which puts it the same size income bucket as EVE. That would be more than SWG or EQ at their peak. Or the subscription size of any of Turbine’s MMOs before they went F2P. That’s the reported population size of ESO at it’s peak and FF XIV currently.
Some reason people think that level of income is bad. That’s why you have to forget about WoW because they are an order of magnitude larger than any other MMO out there in terms of income, ever.

I agree. If you think GW2 is dying anytime soon, chances are you haven’t stuck to any MMORPG for any long period of time. These types of games don’t really just go dead like an FPS or certain other genres of games. DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) is a great example.
In this case, I would prefer if you are going to be a doomsayer that you just bite the bullet and leave now because you don’t sound very committed.. and give me all your items/gold…because frankly, the community doesn’t need anymore negative or childish people(that includes on the forums). It needs positive reinforcement from people who actually want to make positive changes in the game and community.
The quicker the people who don’t want to be here leave, the quicker the dedicated/mature players can make good changes..
And if some quitter can’t take change, i will gladly take their stuff along the way.. lol the end is nowhere in sight.

Lineage is the WoW of Korea. It’s the most popular MMO there and has been for years. Lineage in the US had to close up shop and go home.
How do I feel about an eastern game being played by eastern players making all that money? Fine. How should I feel.
Blade of Soul is popular in China the country with the largest population in the world. But Eastern and Western MMOs seldom do well in the same space. The games that are popular in the East do make a lot of money, but almost never translate well to the West.
Now, I live in the West and out of Western MMOs, Guild Wars 2 is pretty high on the lists of success. There haven’t been any mass lay offs. An expansion is coming and Anet is hiring.
You claim I’m a white knight and that’s fine, but I invite people to take a good long list at your post history. It’s clear you don’t like the game and the fact that you hang around here to badmouth it month after month should be telling enough.
Hell hath no fury like a gamer scorned.
It seems odd to say “GW2 is dying” when an expansion is being released.. Thats a lot of investment and development, companies don’t funnel resources like that into games if its dying.

First you are using the current exchange rate, not the exchange rate during that quarter. The average exchange rate from Apr 1st to Jun 30th was 1096 KrW per USD. If I reversed the situation and use your exchange rate for against the correct dollar estimate, the quarter numbers would be 9% higher or roughly 24,500 million KrW.
Lineage closed in the US, it simply didn’t fly here.
However it’s an insane success in South Korea but it’s income is highly dependent on micro-transaction driven events which started 4th quarter 2009 that doubled the game’s income from the previous quarter. In 2008 Lineage had 112,602 million KrW annual income, 2014 that ballooned to 263,128 million KrW. That’s more than Lineage 2, Blade & Soul and AION’s 2014 income combined. And guess what? GW2 had more income that year than Lineage 2 or Blade & Soul. [gasp!]
So are you proposing we should have a super heavy cash shop based gaming experience to match Lineage’s growth? And if you are about to suggest we already have it you really don’t know what the MMO scene is like in Asia or what they offer as MT in Lineage.
I’ve been following South Korea’s game industry closely and NCSOFT especially for the last 15 years so you can’t beat me about the head and shoulders with their numbers or using out of reporting period currency conversion rates. Nice try though.
SWG was a big thing right up to the point they shot themselves repeatedly in the foot with NGE. It was as big as EQ which made a lot of companies look seriously at doing an MMO.
RIP City of Heroes

You can see that this game is not dying just by looking at this tread…..it has almost 3k views in just 1 day since it posted.
Every GW2 trailer video have over 150 000 views
During HOT announcement GW2 was number 2 game on Twitch (right next to LOL), with over 130k views.
Game have survived for 3 years without any huge boosts of money, surviving just on cosmetics and now you doubt when expansion is on its way??
There have been stories about many GW2 killers so far – ESO,WildStar-Archeage (bla, bla) and yet GW2 still stands above.
You doomsayers are ridiculous.
Lineage is the WoW of Korea. It’s the most popular MMO there and has been for years. Lineage in the US had to close up shop and go home.
Blade of Soul is popular in China the country with the largest population in the world. But Eastern and Western MMOs seldom do well in the same space.
So, what you are saying is that we cannot compare GW2 to WoW, or to Lineage, or to Blade & Soul. In previous posts you also mentioned we cannot compare it with the original GW, either. You are also ignoring its comparison with Aion, too.
In other words, you refuse to compare GW2 with anything. You refuse to accept how poorly its doing while refusing to accept the data in front of you and also being unable to offer any data of your own.
There haven’t been any mass lay offs. An expansion is coming and Anet is hiring.
Despite how important employees have left the company (Chris Whiteside, John Stumme, Kekai Kotaki), despite how they have turned to the expansion model after the Living World failed to increase their earnings, despite the internal mess that saw the constant reshuffling of people in the last months…
You have a very low bar as far as the definition of “success” goes.
Tell me, Vayne, what are you going to do when Guild Wars 2 is shut down and it’s taken from your life forever?
You claim I’m a white knight and that’s fine, but I invite people to take a good long list at your post history. It’s clear you don’t like the game and the fact that you hang around here to badmouth it month after month should be telling enough.
Really? Have I ever called you a “white knight”? Do you have any evidence of that? Because to me it doesn’t like it’s true. Do I have to remind you about what the forum rules say on wrongly accusing people, Vayne?
So are you proposing we should have a super heavy cash shop based gaming experience to match Lineage’s growth?
Do you have any doubt that ArenaNet would already have done so if they believed that would increase their earnings?
