Guildwars 2 wins TenTonHammer Best MMO 2013
So, heresay and rumors. Wait until you get your hands on a game before you start bashing it for it’s decisions. The decisions were made for a reason. And the reason they haven’t released videos detailing every little facet of the game is because it’s still a closed beta, like it or not.
Come on guys, we know better than to judge a book by it’s cover at this point. If we did that no one would of ever played WoW, GW2, or any MMO because of what “some dude that I know said this thing.”
Personally, I’m gonna withhold any kind of judgement till release day, both for WildStar and ESO. But to say GW2 has nothing to worry about from either of these games is silly. Elder Scrolls IP alone is worth more than everything ANet has ever done. Do not underestimate the power of 10s of millions of fans. Will ESO suck at release? Who knows. But make the judgement for yourself, and think for yourself when the time comes.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
Good job anet its definitely a deserved award. Im so glad they could give gw2 its props without even mentioning wow. The naysayers get over it. Its over with and no mmo out nor that will come out next year will be able to compete with the sheer level of injected content at the pace they manage to keep up with. Wildstar. Teso. They wont be able to keep up. Anet has a gold star that wont be beaten for a long time.
Too bad quantity =/= quality. As long as Wildstar and TESO don’t follow Anet’s method of delivering ‘content’ then they have nothing to worry about.
You need a balance of the 2. Too little quality and you got a bad game, too little quantity and you got a boring game.
And TESO/Wildstar has a lot to worry about. WS is competiting right in WoW’s back yard, down to the artwork and graphics (after WoD’s character model upgrade): no one has managed to out-WoW WoW. They need a reason for people to play it rather than WoW (other than just semi-slapstick humor), which is what I’m not seeing.
TESO is already being bashed over its P2P model and shallow combat (the combat on ES games has never been complex and sophisticated but it’s a MMO this time). Not a good starting point.
I meant that Wildstar and TESO don’t have to worry about GW2 as long as they don’t handle updates like Anet is doing. And yes, I’ve heard about the negative word of mouth concerning TESO, but GW2 has been getting it’s fair share for quite a while now as well.

One good reason is you can purchase subscription time with in-game gold, much like you could in Aion. That alone is a reason for people to “check it out”, especially given you get 30 days free if you purchase the game (of course). Chances are, plenty of people will stay playing WS to keep it afloat for a very long time.
That’s a double-edged sword. You can buy game time, but you can also presumably sell game time. That instantly stirs up the pay 2 win argument.
RuneScape did that recently with their bonds system. The reaction from the players were not good, with a few player mods even expressing outrage and quitting.
Besides, that doesn’t make the gameplay different or good.

^ That. End of discussion.

Taking the opinions of people you know personally into consideration may be relying on heresay, but generally it’s at least valid, first hand information.
It’s true that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but is that not what we do with every mmo? Do we not go out and seek out reviews, and videos, etc prior to trying any game to see what others are saying, in order to help us to determine whether or not we want to invest the funds to even bother trying it to begin with?

What you say is generally true, I’m not advocating ignoring your friends or ignoring reviews of the game. But personally, I have found it better to listen to these people, and the reviews, and then make my own decision going forward. Something that doesn’t work for even my best of friends may be the perfect game for me. I’ve had far too many reviews and people tell me something is awful and when I go to try it for myself, it turns it that it was much better than they were willing to admit.
I just advocate keeping an open mind on something till I try it myself. I have had better experiences making my own decisions of what my interests should be. But never discount your friends

You’ll never see me argue against being open minded. Being open minded is what brought my husband and myself to GW1 to begin with.

Indeed, I never would of tried GW2 if I hadn’t been open minded. You certainly can’t use these forums as a metric of whether or not you should buy it hehe.

Of course it won, there’s was no competition in 2013 for MMOs.
Testament to how bad the MMO market has become when a ‘C-’ title can claim to be the best of the bunch.
And thus the naysayers appear. This is why we can’t have people over.
Did I call GW2 a bad game, or even talk negatively about it at all in my post? No. I simply stated GW2 won because it had zero competition, which it didn’t. The fact that a game released mid 2012 won GotY for 2013 shows that nothing worth mentioning even came out in 2013. They had to choose something, so they chose the most successful recent MMO that’s been released.
I wasn’t speaking poorly of GW2 either.
I think a ‘C-’ is a fair grade to give Guild Wars 2 at the moment. This was a game that I gave a solid ‘A’ to at launch. But when you consider all the limitations they’ve put on players since launch, such as DR, one-a-day dungeons and world bosses, the aoe cap, the removal of free 1 day transfers, and the nerf to karma. The game (in my eyes) was clearly better at launch than it is today.
Yet, it’s still the best game on the market. That truly is a testament to how bad the rest of the games on the market are. That’s not an insult directed at GW2 so much as the rest of the market.
I would give it lower marks at release than now because they’ve actually addressed a lot of irritations that I personally hated. Making more things account bound has been a godsend for currencies. Permanent gathering tools, likewise. Then there’s more than a year’s worth of content updates to the game through Living Story that should make every other MMO out there blush in shame. And remember when there was NO choice in dailies or monthlies and a lot of folks got stuck having to run content that absolutely hated? There’s a lot of the profession balancing that’s been done so that now, professions and builds that were laughable a year ago are now viable. Finally, there’s all that guild-based content that wasn’t in the game at launch.
But I’m not saying there’s not a lot more needing to be done. For instance, without a bonafide expansion on the horizon, Living Story will be a bit of a joke in terms of new content over time. They’ve done an awesome job keeping the world flowing and changing, but really, it’s time for a new dragon foe and that’s not something I think can be pulled off through LS. Oh yeah, and medium armors sets … I mean, C’MON! More trenchcoats? Are you serious?
When I look at all these things and compare how much ANet has done since launch, with the amount of effort other developers put into their online worlds over a similar time frame, no other game comes close. My hope now is they keep running with it and don’t slack off and also, end up giving us a proper expansion. It’s needed. I hope they have just been playing coy about it.

Here’s the thing with ESO. It’s based on a franchise history absolutely devoted to catering to the player as an individual, so much so that modding became as important to these titles as the release themselves. ESO cannot play to this franchise strength, therefore these 10s of millions of fans are theoretical only because they are making a game that requires them to treat all players the same way.
There’s also the fact that the lore that supports the Elder Scrolls games is totally bland and banal. The fantasy is so stock that you could pick up a half dozen cheap fantasy novels from a second hand store, rip a random page from each, shuffle them and end up with the main plot for the next ES game. It really is that derivative. And for that reason, there’s just not a lot to look forward to with ESO. The same yawn-inspiring stories, but told through far more homogenized gameplay.
Wildstar actually does look intriguing, but I’m off subscriptions forever. I just ain’t going back, no matter how good a game is. The major reason I’m still playing GW2 now is because after the lulls in my interest, I can hop right back into the game without skipping a beat. No stupid reactivation hoops to jump through and no more payments required. GW2 makes it easy to return to. Sub-based games give me impediments. Now I just preempt those hurdles by not bothering in the first place.
Nice to see for this game getting some recognition. Personally, although I can see there are some flaws, I love this game, for many reasons. My husband keeps wanting to steer me to Skyrim, and I have played it and enjoyed it, but I cannot break away from this game. It’s the only one I play, and I’ve definitely contributed to its success through my excessive gem purchases :p
This is funny. So many whiners coming out over this. Gw2 only problem is the amount of babies it attracts to complain about its content. I enjoy the game and what they release. Whether you have something to complain about or not this post is NOT the place and you guys cant figure that out. Anet needs to start a complaints subforum and delete all the whining not posted there lol. Its all subjective because i enjoy this game alot more than wow and wow never had this much whining. Simple fact is people are spoiled.
Again this topic is CONGRATS ANET GOT AN AWARD AND NO WHINING WILL CHANGE THAT ITS DONE AND OVER WITH.I really didn’t see much whining beyond the 2 or 3 troll posts at the beginning of the thread…I thought this was a gem in the rough honestly lol.
Well it kind of includes the nonstop whining on a day to day basis as well. Which is continuous as im sure you know.
True that is
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
Although GW2 is not perfect, it is BY FAR the best MMO on the market. I completely agree with this.

As long as people have their own opinions there will never be a “perfect” MMO.

Amen. By all things I’ve seen, Wildstar can justify its subscription. They have the content, they have the polish – the things that have been missing from a lot of recent MMOs. TESO doesn’t seem to be well received even now – to many it’s the game no one asked for. The problem isn’t the business model, it’s the game themselves.
While there are quite a few things I’d like to see fixed or improved, Guild Wars 2 is definitely the best MMO I played in 2013.
Frankly, I still consider it the best game I’ve ever played, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of room for improvement.
Iterate with pride, ArenaNet. My heart is with you.

Grats to Anet and GW2.
People will clearly never accept that GW2 won something for actually being better, but rather only because of lack of competition.
It did not win for being better, it won for being preferred over its competition by specific individuals.
I’m pretty sure this is the definition of being better. “Better” is subjective to its core.
I haven’t run across any other mmo that holds a candle to GW2 at the moment. We’ll have to see what 2014 has to offer.
Tbh, I’m kinda surprised how little FFXIV:ARR is mentioned in these forums, since in my eyes it’s very much like hybrid of GW2 and WoW.
It has quite mobile combat (though not as much as GW2 or Neverwinter), due good “cross classing” and potion system even tank and dps classes can manage to be quite self sufficient in open world pve (though dungeons are still pure trinity).
DE’s, best of them actually require some teamwork, etc. Graphic wise I think it’s way better than GW2, mounts, guild housing, okay automatic group finder, etc.
Or is subscription to all GW2 players such massive boogeyman? Just curious.
Anyway I’m not trying to challenge anyone to opinion duel or anything, Gw2 has it’s perks, like way better dye system (and for now gear look customization), but personally I prefer FF over this easily so I’m kinda surprised when only ones ever mentioned in the forums are wow, this, eso and some rare cases utterly crappy FFXI.
Switched Anet to Square E and haven’t regretted it even once.
GW2 certainly has its pluses and minuses. I do find it interesting that this game won though. WoW has many many more players and a recent expansion. FFXIV:ARR is the most recent AAA MMO to be released and seems to be doing pretty well.
This game certainly beats out the disaster that is SWTOR, and it certainly has a higher content pace, but otherwise I feel like the innovation has died off and we are settling into the low quality but fast updates combined with the gear treadmill and no endgame to speak of has been added since fractals over a year ago.
Of course it won, there’s was no competition in 2013 for MMOs.
There was Defiance. But that game is a joke though…
Congratulations to ANet on the award. Best of luck in 2014 as well.
I’m pretty sure this is the definition of being better. “Better” is subjective to its core.
Better as a state of being is not subjective. Better as a perception is.
I happen to share the perception that GW2 is the (or one of the) best MMO on the market right now, in this case.
