Gw2 most grindy game ever..?
ascended gear and ascended level swappable stats on legendaries are hardly mere “vanity” things.
Yes they are. vanity
The majority of the owners of a legendary do it for the skin, and ascended set gives a really small advantage over exotics, asc weapons gives a little bit more compared to exotic weapons, and asc trinkets are really easy to get.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
It’s definitely grindy. GW1 same thing. Despite being “anti-grind” in order to do any of the hall of monuments stuff for GW2 what did you need to do? Grind for months.
I guess what set the Guild Wars games apart is that you can play them without grinding and still like, progress through the story, but yeah any sort of long term goal with either game and you’ve got a hell of a grind in front of you. They’re not even subtle about the achievement interface replacing the quest logs of other games.
I like GW2 don’t get me wrong, but people tend to use the word grind as bad and it’s not. It’s neither good nor bad. It’s a necessary part of the genre. The gameplay is what’s good or bad, and for me, the gameplay is good.
Priorities, what to do?

Guild Wars 1 has a grind to get max titles and Guild Wars 2 has a grind to get the end vanity items. It’s set up as the core of both games. They want you to earn them. Granted they didn’t do a very good job with the Legendaries in this game, but the no grind only referred to leveling not going after one of the end game goals.
ascended gear and ascended level swappable stats on legendaries are hardly mere “vanity” things.
And yet none of which are vital to the effective completion of much of the content in GW2, which can be achieved with exotics easily enough.
correct, not until anet finally implements harder content along with higher tiers of gear…
my point still stands.

vanity means no statistical change. gear with higher stats and the ability to customize to any gear set is not vanity.

You don’t even need to have played other MMOs. Play any main Pokémon game if you want to see what grind is.
You get given your first pokemon, catch 5 (or more) others, get to the first gym (boss battle) and even if you’ve done everything possible along the way your pokemon will be a few levels short.
Your options to level up are to walk round and round a small patch of grass fighting the same 3 pokemon over and over or….walk around an adjacent patch of grass fighting the same 3 pokemon over and over.
Then you beat the gym leader, get your badge and move on to the next one. When you get there once again your pokemon will be underlevelled, even if you’ve done everything available to you at that point. Once again your only option is to walk around the same tiny area for ages fighting random pokemon to level up.
That pattern repeats for all 8 gym leaders and then the elite 4 (final bosses), with some extra iterations after that in some games.
If you don’t feel like grinding your option is to turn off the game and go do something else. You’re locked out of all future content until you beat that boss and you can’t beat the boss without grinding.
(Most JRPGs are similar, but I picked Pokémon because it’s the one people are most likely to have played.)
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Most grindy game ever? Not by a long shot.
Far more grindy than GW1? Yes, by a huge factor.
People keep bringing up titles in GW1 yet completely forget the fundamental differences between those and a fixed stat boost ascended gear provides, not to mention locking you into a single gear build.
Ascended gear is not vanity, it is a grind. The whole point of it is to be a grind. Time gated and monetary grind and as such completely fails the core vision of the game set out here:

You need full ascended in order to be competitive in this game. It is a horrible, expensive grind. Just wait until you see legendary armor!

No, you don’t. Nobody genuinely knows or cares what your armour is unless you’re constantly faceplanting Arah story in nothing but your undies or something silly. Nobody is currently demanding that teammates ping their armour before pressing on with a dungeon, or WvW or any other part of the game.

Well, I prefer to maximize my effectiveness in WvW and refuse to be at a stat disadvantage against other players, so ascended is a must. If you don’t think gear matters, feel free to throw on some greens and do the content because gear doesn’t matter right?

Not really, because most of the time, it’s the number of belligerents that tend to decide the outcome of most of the battles I wind up in.
If you really think that WvW was meant to be fair you should have played sPvP in the first place instead of overdramatizing the little gain of ascended stats…

I understand the min/max mentality that you have, as have seen it in lots of mmos, but there are tons of people in this game who do just fine and are very competitive in all phases of GW2 in ‘just’ exotic gear.

Working on a production line, or working as an office drone, being treated as a faceless number—welcome to the game of life.
Playing a game for pleasure you can switch off at any time , if you so wish doesn’t even come close to that grind.

You mean that Legendary armour that has the same stats as Ascended and we have no idea how to get it yet?
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
…This is definitely not the most grindy game ever. Aion was probably the grindiest game I ever played and even it isn’t the most grindy game ever – though it’s still ridiculously grindy.
And when stuff isn’t available to people like you at the swipe of a credit card, you whine that this game is such a grind and that you have to spend HOURS trying to get legendaries…
No, I hardly buy anything in this game with real money.
My argument is that the pay shop devalues everything in this game and just highlights what a huge grind it is. Take a new level 80, for instance. You need a set of exotic armor and accessories, runes and upgrades for each, fill out any weapons that you might need, add in some sigils, and don’t forget food and your other buff.
And that’s all just for one specific build. Guild Wars 2 may not have a gear treadmill in the traditional sense, but it’s definitely there.

I dont’ think you necessary said that directly. You just said something like “some people are fine with exotic gear”. Which is non of my business if they felt that way, since I felt ascended is somewhat useful.
Try playing a game that has a 3-day waiting list for an 8-man only group to kill the mobs that give the best exp for those last 5 levels before endgame. Where “endgame” is a real concept (entire focus of the game., not the journey to get there).
A game, where dying causes your exp bar to go backwards, causing you to lose exp for every death.
Where the only exp you get is from killing mobs. Not crafting, not doing quests, no exp boosters.
Where gaining exp is not linear. Not the same ratio for every level.
No one makes games like that anymore for NA/EU distribution. Those games are too grindy.
-Walked uphill to school and back in snow both ways
Out of 9 MMOs in the past 15 years, GW2 is hands-down the least grindy game I and my guild have ever played.

I still play some like that lol. Nostalgia eh
Sometimes you can really see how MMO’s have moved on by playing those ones and GW2 in a session
You don’t really need to grind to progress.
So, no.
It is by far the most grindy game I’ve every played for any length of time.
Don’t even ask how many times I “swung a sword again”

If they want me to grind for the legendary items — they need to add better looking legendary weapons.. I literally wouldn’t accept Birfrost if Anet gave it to me for free.
Bah, who am I kidding? I’d transmute it and keep it for the stats. :P

Go play Eve Online, Everquest 1 or 2, Dark Age of Camelot, or Lord of the Rings Online for a couple months, then come back here and say that. If you’re still sane, that is.
And just to be clear, I really enjoyed Eve, DaoC, and LotrO……..but the grind in those games makes GW2 look like child’s play. (Not to mention even more mmos that I have played in the past that were much worse grinds than GW2……just these few come to mind when I think of hellish grind)

It’s only grindy if you make it grindy. When you aim for goals in the game that are optional yet were designed around it, then there is no point in complaining about it.
Why not just profit off the impatient/stubborn and get other things?
The grind in Gw2 is not that bad, although it should be compared to itself as opposed to other games, because just because some games do it, doesn’t mean it’s fine for this game to do it. For example, the leveling process has been made more grindy for dubious gain— I find myself rushing through material even faster and won’t even get certain traits that would have been open to me anyways. It may not be as bad as other games, but I don’t care— it’s now worse for just the sake of changing things.
The main problem about grind in this game is simple— they introduce things that requires lots of grind and simultaneously nerf and remove ways to grind so that even if you wanted to sit down and grind it out you have to deal with time gates and ninja nerfs and whatnot.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
Face it. People want BiS. Required or not is irrelevant. It is grindy.
And I have every intent to keep swinging my sword again.
Face it. People want BiS. Required or not is irrelevant. It is grindy.
And I have every intent to keep swinging my sword again.
And even so, getting BiS in GW2 is WAY more easier than most MMOs. Actually, easier than any mmo that I played, and I played a bunch.

And merely just wanting something is not a reason of why you should have it.

It may be the least grindy mmorpg, go try other mmorpgs(especially f2p ones) and you will see.
Gw2 is the most casual/easy mmorpg I have ever played. Instead, I want to see more hardcore grindy stuff in this game.

And I have every intent to keep swinging my sword again.
And merely just wanting something is not a reason of why you should have it.
Then grinding is a reason why I should have it?
It only felt like a grind when there was one clear mindless farming method that you have to use your game time on or else you’re losing a good chunk of potential gold (Plinx, CoF p1 100b marathon, Dead Eye 25g/hr farm, etc. ).
Right now there’s some diversity on profitable activities that involve playing the game(flipping not included of course).

According to the game, yes.
If you disagree, then feel free to state why else you would deserve something other than “i want it”
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
