On every game MMO, Iv always been the “Healer” Teamworking player but iv read that there is’nt any healer in the game?, I dont understand …

How does this game work?.

Help would be nice on my play style.

It really doesn’t matter. 90% of the content you’ll be running around with 20+ other people spamming 1.

That depends on what content he aspires to play and what his goals for endgame are.

If he decides to play WvW, server choice is a big thing. A high tier server will result in boring play. A low pop server might see a bit more challenge.

SPvP/TPvP is obviously not that at all.

PvE is quite varied. Fractals tends to be pretty skill-based aside from a few stack spots. Every dungeon can be played with or without stack-cheesing. Most of the open world content is pretty good from a gameplay perspective. It’s only if he decides to farm popular events or map bosses that it really devolves into “follow 20+ people and press 1.”

ENGINEER!!! Best class that can do that sort of thing.

However the only real place you will actually be doing this actively is probably PvP and maybe in Fractals (to a much lesser degree).

The rest of the content is not support build friendly. Or rewarding enough to do it.

There’s no hard trinity in this game (as in, tank, DPS, healer). In theory there should be “soft” trinity of damage, support and control, where you can have characters dedicated to one or a any mix of the three. In practice, though, it’s usually damage and damage with a little support thrown in.

There are no direct healing skills like what you can find in other games, where you target another player and cast heal on them, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to heal other players. Some examples:

Everyone has a self heal (it’ll always be on the position 6 of your skill bar), but some classes also have a heal skill that while it’ll usually heal for less, it’ll also affect other players. The guardian, for example, has healing breeze that heals himself and up to 4 other players in a cone in front of him, engineers can drop a turret that heals anyone near it or a gun that shoots healing packs (heal anyone that walks on them), and so on.

Each different weapon has a specific focus on a class, some of them can heal other characters. For example, guardian staff and mace (actually I think they’re the only ones). The elementalist is a special case, it has 4 attunements you can switch at anytime (fire, air, water, earth), and each attunement is focused on something, water is always focused around healing.

Some skills and traits also do some healing, the guardian (I’m using guardian a lot because it’s my main and the class I know better) has skills that teleports to the nearby ally with the least health and heal them and anyone around.

Combos. Combos are one nice feature of GW2, the way they work is to combine two skills for some extra effects. For example, some skills or attacks create a field of fire in the ground (which might burn or damage enemies), if you shoot an arrow trough the field, it catches fire and apply burning (damage over time) on top of the arrow attack. In general the kind of field defines what will happen, and the kind of attack (blast, projectile, and so on) to whom it’ll be applied. Water fields apply healing if you blast them (basically any skill that explodes or hits the ground), several professions can create them, but the elementalist is the most adept at it. It’s common for a commander to call for water fields when in WvW or some of the harder boss fights.

Any profession can be built to do anything, but if you want to be the closest you can get to a regular healer in other games, I’d recommend you to start with guardian, engineer or elementalist.

It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

OP, you might be more interested in ‘support’ instead of just healer – it’s the closest I can think of comparison to a trinity healer. What’s unique about GW2 is every class can support in their own way. Crowd Control, boons (aka buffs), aoe heals, damage support, mitigating damage support, etc. It depends how they’re traited, what gear they wear, and what skills/utilities they bring in a fight.

Guardian and elementalist are likely the top choice for “healer” roles, but any class can support. Guardians are a heavy armor/tanky sense of support (think paladin), and elementalists are a light armor/versatile support (think cleric). Although elementalists are more of mage+cleric = jack of all trade.

My best success in being a ‘healer’ comes from staff Elementalist. They’re particularly easy to spec for it, and their water skills always have at least one heal on them, and they’re really good for condition cleansing.
I also have a mace/shield Guardian that’s done pretty well on the front lines. Not quite power healing, but he can throw enough Protection and regen around to add survivability to those around him.

At end-game, look for sigils and runes that will help with healing power, as they’ll be utterly cheap on the trading post. …Mostly because healing is undervalued due to the nature of most of the content.

I’d still take ya, though. It’s less rare in GW2, but I’ve been in situations in the zerg where I get chunked in half, and within two seconds, I’m full again. As melee, it’s often appreciated. Just remember to find a good way to do damage, as that will always be necessary.

Many alts; handle it!

Healing has a value even in full DPS groups. A lot of hardcore players take runes of the scholar, which means their HP has to stay above 90%. But you won’t want to go fully focused on heals.

The only thing about GW2 (which you may or may not like) is even if you want to heal, you have to be prepared to put out high levels of DPS yourself.

If you run dungeons with new players, you can stat full heals and save the run. If you run dungeons with hardcore experienced players, they are pretty much going to live whether you heal them or not. You can still save a few situations, but in general they will work better with someone who deals high amounts of damage.

As a DPS ele, I always make sure I have at least two blast finishers ready. Two water blasts is a substantial amount of heal no matter what your stats are.

I have a healing warrior that goes back and forth between healing banners and healing shouts depending on the content I’m doing. Healing banners is frankly OP in PvE stuff and healing shouts is a great boon to groups in WvW. just my quick 2 cents.

[OTR] – Greck Howlbane – Guardian
Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!

High-five, Pookie!

I originally went banner-heals to raise my swiftness buff uptime, but I found healing banners was a solid way to keep a regular dungeon team upright while putting out damage buffs. And for those big boss situations, shouts help there too.
