Been thinking of going legendary hunting since I am running low on personal goals for this game. I was wondering how you guys got your precursor so I could have an idea on where to start.

havent got one yet but seen the legend drop for a friend, from a champion bag in ascalonian catacombs

Some seem to get them by combining 4 of same type 80 exotic ei 4 greatswords for dusk or dawn in the mystic forge

Hmmm… dungeons, huh? I suppose I could give it a shot as it has been a while since I last tried a dungeon.

Mine dropped for me as a regular drop in the Labyrinth, not that it was a good one though. xD

I think anywhere is as good as the next place really. If you have fun doing it and can make some cash on the side along the way, go for it.

Found a perma hair contract in a chest. Sold it and bought Dawn and a headstart in all the items

Precursors can drop everywhere where equipment can drop. Be it a chest in the start zone or a mob-drop in Arah. The odds are the same everywhere.

Start farming for it now, spend 12 hours a day farming for it, and by 2100 you might get one to drop.

Or throw 3-4,000 in gold into the mystic toilet to try and get one.

Or do the sensible thing, farm for other stuff, and buy it from the auction.

I got my first precursor drop from Veteran quaggan in wvw. Thats about 3 months from start-about 100 hours since i play very little back then xD It was a Zap. Sold it for 300g : ( was desperately for t3 armor lol.
Got my 2nd precursor from Mystic Forge. Took me about 20g worth of shortbow and now im wearing a Dreamer <3 that was around LA invasion.
Got my 3rd one from MF as well. I threw a few random rares from WBR and a kudzu show up out of nowhere lol. About 2 weeks after Lover.
Just last week I got my 4th and 5th in one day from labyrinth. A Spark dropped from a mob door, and a Rage dropped from random mob

Anh i still unable to get Gwynnie to those conspiracy theory: nah, those are from 3 accounts, not one :p so drop rate is equal across all accounts i think

I got 3 precursor drops: Bard from first karka event in 2012, Bard from a veteran ice ele in Snowblind fractal before Fractured, Carcharis from a silly OG in EotM. “Awesome” precursors.

As for the ones I actually needed, I just farmed cash and bought Dawn and Dusk. I did not want to try the MF since I don’t think it’s worth it, soooo many people have tried their luck there and lost thousands of gold…

1. Took 5 tries in the Mystic forge to get Zap.

2. got The Hunter as a random drop in Caudacus Manor.

…I’m just lucky.

1. Venom from Mystic Forge (I bought another one at some point, but it was worth like 10g at the time lol)
2. Bought The Legend from TP for 1,1k gold.

What precursor? Way too busy upgrading towers and keeps trying to keep my WvW server afloat, making sure everyone gets those nice tickets, to even own 1 gold.

Never got a precursor ever. Only know like two people in game who had a precursor drop and didn’t buy it. I don’t really expect to ever get one unless they make changes to how this system works.

I bought my pistol pre for 300g. Never had a drop.
Anyway its ok.

I bought mine (The Lover) from the Trading Post. It took me about 7 months to save up the gold because I didn’t want to farm for it, I just played whatever I would normally and saved the money by not buying anything else except essentials like salvage kits.

You can get them as drops anywhere you can get other level 80 exotics, which (if you’re playing a level 80 character) is pretty much anywhere in the game.

Although you’ll have better chances in high level maps where you’re killing a lot of enemies. Although I didn’t get a precursor I got a lot better drops than usual over Halloween because I spent all my time in the Labyrinth. I was killing more enemies than usual over all and they were all level 80. I got 2 or 3 exotics that month and a lot more rares than normal.

I bought my precursor from the TP, I didn’t want to risk the toilet and end up with nothing but an empty wallet. Now I just have an empty wallet and a precursor.

I bought a ‘The Legend’ for my Bitfrost for 840gold….and recently made a ‘The Lover’ in Mystic Forge by chucking in 4 lvl 80 rares…..i think my lifetime quota of gw2 luck got used up there o_O

Precursor? Haven’t seen one of those, but this one time, at Camp Karka, the Loch Ness Monster jumped out of a loot bag, hit me over the head with a sasquatch, and ate my crème brûlée flavored potato chips. Before I could hit the Print Screen key Elvis swooped down in a UFO, and whoosh, away they flew. I could hear echoes of them giggling and munching on my crème brûlée flavored potato chips long after they had disappeared into the limpid blue Southsun skies. That was my last bag of crème brûlée flavored potato chips, too. Stupid Loch Ness Monster.

I have bought all 5 of mine. Back when there were no mega servers and I could farm Ori nodes to make my money.

My sister got Zap by running dungeons all the time, spending the tokens on exotic weapons, and throwing those weapons into the Mystic Forge.

I got Leaf of Kudzu from the Mystic Forge. I crafted a bunch of exotic weapons to unlock the skins in the Wardrobe and threw the results into the forge to try and get some additional skins.

I bought Carcharias (im sure thats mispelled) about a month ago for 120 gold

The only precurser to drop for me was from the glorious Precurser Giveaway of 2012 in Southsun. I dropped the Hunter, sold it, and bought the Chosen.

Have bought Venom since then.

I may have never bothered with a legendary at all if the Southsun thing didn’t happen back in the day. Good times.

Saw the opportunity, was going for an investment, got spark relatively cheap from TP at that time. Held it in storage for a while then suddenly decided I’ll just craft a legendary.

Still no 1st hand drop.

The funny part is that the whole NPE that is supposed to make the game less confusing does almost nothing to teach players about the tp, precursors, mystic forge, ect.

So sadly salvaging precursors probably happens every day to people who will never even know what happened. But i guess if the goal is to keep prices high so gem sales stay strong this is a good thing for the devs.

As to the op, if you really want a precursor then find a good way to farm gold and buy it outright. Throwing rares into the mystic forge is so much of a gamble you could lose 4k gold before you get what you want out of it.

Got 3. 2 from drops in the same week (don’t even want to know the odds on that) and the dawn from 20 rare greatswords that I usually just salvage for ectos, but i figured why not unlock an exotic skin if I can. The funny thing is I even got the ghost puppy from my first 200 tot bags and my luck is usually terrible.

Just bought $10 worth of lottery tickets; wish me luck!!

I got my first precursor (howl) 1 year ago from a chest in CoF. My second precursor ( dusk ) dropped 1 1/2 month ago… from Champion Grawl High Shaman in Edge of the mist. What I can tell you, Never try to farm them because you won’t get them.The % to drop precursor are so LOW. You’re better to farm the golds and buy them from the tp. If you get lucky in the process , good for you.

Mhm isnt it impossible? If you already have that skin unlocked, you should have salvaged it after the wardrobe update. I think its more like you got the skin from pvp locker :/ otherwise, you will never have it show up in your wardrobe. I salvaged plenty of exos contain BL skins before the update and they’re all long gone Q_Q

Got The Hunter from the 2012 giveaway….sold it for 158g. Been saving up ever since…every time I get close ANet changes something and the prices go way up. :/ In ~1300 hours of play, I’ve never had one drop elsewhere…ever. Not from mobs, not from champ chests, WvW, or anywhere else. I haven’t thrown a great amount of stuff in to the forge. I have notoriously bad luck with drops and it’s been so since after the November 2012 loot nerfs, so I refuse to waste money in the forge.

Last I looked about a year ago, for those curious, it used to be ~1:900 chance to get a PC from 4 level 80 rares and about 1:90 for 4 exos Don’t know if that’s changed.

Reading this thread, and others on PCs in the past, I’m still convinced some accounts are more likely to get good drops, while others are eternally cursed. I once knew a guy who had 5 PCs drop from trash mobs. One came from a regular risen chicken in CS.

You want something to shoot for, make it something that’s achieveable. Ascended armour is one, finishing an (achieveable and *cough*UNBUGGED*cough*) collection is another. Legendaries are so hit-and-miss with that one ingredient that for many it’s beyond the budget and just not worth it.

Others try their luck in the forge. It’s how I got mine, and I didn’t use rares; tried that myself, wasted over 400g crafting 1k+ rares to use as forge fodder. Gave up trying for a while and bought 4 exotic staves on a whim one night before going to bed. For most of us it’s extremely rare, but to this day it’s still unexplained as to how some people manage to have the luck they do (don your tinfoil hats please).

But the wardrobe update didn’t go back and unlock skins from the past. I know this because I was specifically hoping for this and watching for it. Why would it have unlocked the Hunter skin for you? I tend to agree that it must have been an unlocked PvP weapon that shared a skin with The Hunter.

combined 4 lvl 80 rares in mystic toilet. 3 weapons and one piece of armor. got the lover. this was during an extrely lucky two days when i had 11 exotic weapons drop for me in game. thought maybe and correctly the luck might hold at the forge. i attempted many forges before that but didn’t track how mich i spent. never had a precorsor drop in game.

A year and a half into the game (3700 hours):
-Have crafted hundreds of rare short bows and great swords to throw into the forge: no precursor
-Have crafted Meteorlogicus, Bifrost, Sunrise, Quip, Twilight, Eternity: bought every precursor
-Won Rage in a guild raffle: sold for 80 gold
-Threw random world boss train rares into forge: got Rage and sold for 80 gold
-Got Rage again from the forge the very next morning: was so mad I gave it to a friend (was tempted to throw it back into the forge)

In a year and a half, I have gotten Rage 3 times, total worth: 240 gold
Compared to other precursors, it is quite upsetting that my precursor luck was wasted on this piece of bologna (one great sword or staff being worth well over 1000 gold).

Best way to get a precursor? Make it known to friends and guildmates that you are trying to make a legendary. Many people will donate rare weapons of the type you’re trying for, so you can try your luck at the forge with those. I do not recommend relying on the mystic forge- many people have posted in the past of throwing away hundreds of gold only to walk away with tears. Making it known also means if a friend or guildmate happens to get the precursor you need, they may sell it to you at a discount.

Mystic Forge: Bought 1 Spark (ages and ages ago), Dusk more recently (crafted Twilight, sold it, and bought Eternity)

Chest in Cursed Shores: Sunrise (sold to buy Zap)

Bought on tp: Zap, Energizer, Howl, the Dreamer, Tooth of Frostfang, Chaos Gun, 2nd Spark before wardrobe.

Also sold that same Zap to a guildie when the wardrobe was implemented, because I got Anet customer service to trade me a complete Bolt if I agreed to delete one of my Incinerators. Lost out on the title, but gained a unique legendary (an an expensive one), so totally worth it to me.

Still need to finish the Moot and Howler.

So yes, I’ve been lucky in some ways, but then again I have went ahead and spent thousands on the TP, because I’m not going to whine and complain about spending gold because someone else got lucky.

I don’t really play the TP (though I do make investments), so almost all funding comes from daily dungeon tour of 10-12 dungeons + more on weekends. I don’t sell any mats ever, I salvage all greens, blues, and rares that sell for less than 44s or so. I don’t do silly collections for the many ugly skins, if its a named exotic and it’s worth gold, I sell it.

Getting a precursor is not that big of deal if you are willing to work for it and save your gold.

Although some people are lucky with MF or drops, I encourage you to not trust in MF at all. It is the biggest waste of money in this game.

Got mine (Storm) from a random loot bag during the Escape from Lion’s Arch/Battle of Lion’s Arch (not sure which one it was). It was either a champion bag or from those bags you got from rescuing the citizens. My memory is really shot on the specifics of that event but I was happy to get it. Though later on since it was clear that precursor crafting/scavenging hunt was put on indefinite hold I decided to sell it on the TP and buy a precursor I really wanted most: The Hunter. Their prices were only a 75 gold difference at the time.

Happily rocking The Predator on my Charr warrior alt nowadays.

I’ve gotten 8 precursors from the mystic forge, 0 from anywhere else.

I just throw a few rares/exos into the forge now and then, I have not had much luck trying them in bulk. I mostly just throw randoms in and hope for something good, but sometimes i do specifics weapons if i have the money to make/buy them.

The 3 most recent precursors i have gotten were Dusk/Dusk/Dawn The last 2 being back to back to my surprise. So now i am currently working on Eternity, just need to grind out karma and exp.

I bought 2 precursors, and had one drop from the mystic forge, but I never went out of my way to actually try and get a hold of one. The easiest method, in my opinion, is simply to save your money and purchase the one you want. The one I got in the mystic forge was The Legend, and I got that during the marionette event, when my inventory was constantly getting filled up with rares I didn’t feel like salvaging all of them. The very second toss of random rares into the mystic forge, including armors, popped out The Legend.
