Just a thread to estimate the average gold players have and if it’s a case that only a very tiny percentage of the actual game population is rich enough to afford items as legendaries and ascended gear.

I have 7 gold. Highest I ever had was 60 gold.

I have 13 gold. The most I have ever had was about 55ish. I’m a casual player that plays about 5-6 hours most weeks.

And no, I’ll never be able to buy a legendary or ascended gear unless I magically start getting 20-30 hours a week to invest in the game.

The most gold I have ever had was 200g for golden and a tag. The thing is the money you have fluctuates based on what you are buying. The average amount of gold many players have who aren’t saving up for something might change on a daily basis. For example I had 26 gold earlier this week and some T6 mats. I decided to put a set of travelers on my mesmer. I sold some of the mats and got an additional 60-70g (I was spending it as I trickled in). I bought the runes some new weapons. and was down to 3 or so gold. However, between the 12 travelers runes, corruption, bloodlust, force, accuracy sigils, that I have on toons that can be salvaged, dungeon tokens (salvage the gear for ectos), plus mats it is difficult to gauge how much I actually have in terms of gold.

My point is even if you ask something like this players actual amount of gold isn’t really the same asking ho

most gold i’ve had at once was 800-900g after i got multiple ’cursor drops over the course of a weekend.

Not everyone is going to save. Many players earn for a goal, get what they want, and don’t worry about having a bankable amount of money. The real question is if you have enough to support your daily activity in game ie WvW gear, dungeon gear, harvesting tools etc. You good have several thousand gold but unless you plan to buy/craft a legendary you likely have little use for it besides watching your assets grow.

What exactly do you want to buy with the gold you have? If your answer is nothing then there is no point measuring how much you have. If you want a legendary (or some other expensive item) then many will tell you save for it.

Right now I’ve got 22 gold. That will jump to around 40 if all my trading post listings go through tonight. The most I’ve ever had was a little over 100. That was back when I still liked ANet enough to budget a monthly gem purchase even if there wasn’t anything in the store I actually wanted, and I was converting gems to gold pretty frequently. I think that was March of last year.

I’m sort of floating between the 1000g – 1500g mark.

I’m not entirely sure where it keeps coming from but I know where it’s going. About 500g into gems in the past few months, maybe 300g into ascended crafting related stuff.

After The Queen’s Speech event I had about 1.3k and somehow I’ve kept balanced from that. Strangely my luck has been incredibly low too.

I guess just doing dailies and occasionally getting invited to do a bunch of dungeons, salvaging everything and selling the mats from time to time.

I have not champ farmed since before Tequatl.

Ahh, sounds like a lot of it comes down to time invested into the game then. I do pretty much the same, but I seldom clear all the living story stuff before it goes away.

I also tend to buy stuff as soon as I see something I want and I have several max level alts on top of that. Never cared for legendaries though, fortunately. =P

My account has about 600 hours of /played. 400+ of those have been spent leveling 3 toons to 80 and equipping ascended gear (trinkets) for them. The remaining 200ish hours I have spent studying patch notes and their impact on markets, finding trade lines I wanted to work with and markets to learn in and out, and played the TP game. I have Quip, Incinerator, T3 armor, and will make my Dreamer this weekend once I can get a kitten buy order to fill for The Lover. The BEST way to make money in this game is learning how gold/mat inflation work and which patches will impact varying investment opportunities. I feel like garbage spending an hour doing the FGS champ-train, making 8g when I could be making 80.

2100g at the moment .. made most of my money with harvesting wood, iron and herbs lately
Sadly the good time are gone now it seems .. price of wood goes down and down the last days

However no Legendary so far since i constantly play 7 different chars and prefer to have some nice stuff on all of them instead just one overprized item on only one of them.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I made a decent income from playing the auction house in WoW, but in GW2, there seems to be a very very very narrow of margin at best for a very small number of items. Patches can shake things up…but even then, I’ve found a lot of trends to be counter-intuitive to the way the market responded with things in WoW. The crafting system in GW2 also pretty much kills any chance of crafting for a profit.

My gold at the moment is a little over 830. The most I had at one point was about 1100. I converted a lot of gold to gems recently to send Christmas gifts to some friends and when I meet a new player that seems truly interested in the game I often will send them 5 gold or so to help them get started.

Question to people with 500+ gold:

I’ve been lazy recently but the bulk of my income comes from trading on the TP. It’s a decent way to make some coin on days when I can’t really play because it only takes a few minutes.

It’s not crafting that makes a profit. It’s raw materials.

The richest people in the game, and heck, even the general richer person with Golden title or 4-digit gold…they know how to use the Trading Post.

Some more than others, but in a global market where just about anything can be bought, sold, flipped, scammed, snatched, (pick a verb) for in-game currency…“sitting” on your gold (however low it may be) is going to keep it at a static value.

You’ve probably seen some of the posters referring to “liquid assets.” They have money in cloth, wood, metal, ectos, or whatever markets they’re investing in.

The GW 2 Trading Post is the closest to any actual Stock Market or Global shares in the Real World that I have ever seen in an MMO.

Yes, it can be intimidating, but plenty of players have written guides on how to play the TP, where to invest, and how to monitor trends throughout the week (people buy more on weekends, causing price drops in some markets and price hikes in others). Also, noticing seasonal trends (holidays, or upcoming LS events/requirements) and being quick on the draw with those trends can net very large profit gains.

Bottom line, don’t be afraid to dive in! The trading post is there for everyone to benefit!

Just a thought – I find it ironic when people say “The TP is bad because people make so much more money there than just playing the game the ‘way it was meant to be played’”. It would be like if you worked at McDonalds for minimum wage. One day a construction worker comes in for lunch, and through conversation you find out he makes 3x what you do per day without needing a higher education. They have openings, he says! Currently hiring! But you just think about what a pain it would be to have to learn something new, to change your routine, so you just say “Thanks but no thanks… oh and I also think the Government should outlaw people from making so much since I can’t either”. The construction guy just shakes his head and walks back to his much more lucrative employment, which the fast food worker could have been a part of, but couldn’t be bothered to learn.

Note: I use trading post flipping very very rarely.

Only about 100g of my assets came from investments.

However, I do recognize the potential. I just don’t like doing it. In EVE I made investments that could be turned immediately (I had a high level in the ability to break items down into mats). EVE had like 1% taxes making that possible, GW2 has 15%.

A more accurate description would be a McDonald’s worker that loves his job, and a construction worker saying well if you ever want to make more money, you can do this job. But wait, the McDonald’s worker hates construction work, and would rather do something he enjoyed with his time. Oh they have! Seriously, speedclearing dungeons or just playing in general can net lots of money as well. Not sure if you were around before there was gold on completion of dungeons. Also, even if someone doesn’t want to get deep into maximizing profit on the TP, ascended crafting has caused a rise in price on all goods. Anything found adventuring can be sold for an amount much higher than say, a year ago.

Speedclearing dungeons? See this is what I’m talking about. The game was supposed to focus on open world dynamic combat. I can speed clear dungeons twice as challenging and twice as fun in a trinity game. They need to update the reward structure for those of us who don’t have a desire to speedclear dungeons or flip the tp. I have no desire to run an instanced dungeon, in any game, ever again after WoW and Rift :p Especially since Rift was pretty much the pinnacle of dungeon design.

I guess I just feel like all areas of the game should yield equal rewards for time spent in them. Some nights I’m lucky to break even in WvW, which is why other nights I’ll have to farm just to have gold for consumables. Maybe I just need to change this game into a job as other MMORPG’s became for me, because playing your own way really doesn’t work if every mode of play has a different reward structure.

Good post though, made me think some more on it.

Right, and I actually agree. The follow up though is that the McDonalds worker doesn’t enjoy having hand-me-down everything. Misses the new flashy toys when they’re released. At the moment I have like 45 gold, the most I’ve ever had was like… 530… I think? (somewhere around there didn’t kept track, stupid minis >.<).

What I do:

- Run paths CoF 1, AC 1-3, Arah 1-2, CoE and HotW (that’s 15g).
- Hop on the champ train for 2 runs only (Depends but let’s say a mininum of 1g, just for the heck of it).
- Gather some quick selling mats and play with the TP with anything I gained on the day.

  • Bonus: If I have time I try to take my “Black Lion Key” character on a run, that’s doing the story steps to quickly gain a key, but I only do a key per day because it’s really boring :P

So in summary per day: 16g + any extra earninigs + 1 Black Lion Key.
Per week (5 days): 80g + any extra + 5 Black Lion Keys.
Per month (20 days): 320g + any extra + 20 Black Lion Keys.
Per year (260 days): 4160g + any extra + 260 Black Lion Keys.
Per… ok ok ok I’ll stop sheeesh

“Slow but steady”.

They should increase the TP tax to 20-25%.

Why? You do realize this would hurt the everyday player that sells drops on the TP more than it would traders right?

That’s great and all for people who enjoy spreadsheets and math, I’m glad it’s there for people to make money if they want.

I just would rather…play the game to earn money. I wish they would acknowledge that group of people sometimes

The problem is that the open world combat is rarely engaging. I mean, there’s still plenty of it around…but I think a lot of people get burnt out on following a zerg to auto-attack mobs really fast.

OP, I’m not accusing you of being a hacker but seriously, you are exposing innocent players financial information to the hackers and i refuse to fall into that trap.

Choose to have fun and enjoy the game in whatever way is best for you.

Sadly, because of the notion introduced by EQ, WoW, and other MMOs of the time that Time Investment+Content Design should be directly proportional to Reward Received, Open World content for themepark MMOs probably won’t reach loot equality for quite a while. Also, the fact that an increasingly growing number of players are driven by the reward instead of the adventure or the experience doesn’t help this matter.

If WvW is your thing, play WvW. To all players, if you enjoy PvE, PvP, Dungeons, Fractals, etc…do what you enjoy doing!

Know this though, there will always be a way to maximize monetary gain, and some players will feel compelled to always pursue that method. If that method is not fun for you, then do not play it. The same applies in the real world (to a point). Does one pick the job with greater pay, or the job one enjoys more? The choice is yours.

  • The goal is to introduce meaningful UNIQUE rewards to each area of content. Monetary divide will always be an issue, because both player skill and game content is constantly changing and evolving.

I’ve got… 2 gold right now. But I’m always spending, so overall, for the time I put in, I feel that I get a fair amount of gold. That is only because, however, I farm a few times a week for more. Since most of my play time is in WvW, I would prefer to get an increase in gold there, but I’m not holding my breath.

The most I’ve ever had was 30g (not counting the 80 i was mailed to transfer servers).

9G. Too hard to get gold in this game .

This is the most ridiculous troll post I’ve ever seen, you can’t be serious …

just play some frickign dungeons in a weaks and you easily get all the gold you need.
Explore with your characters the maps to 100% also gets you quickly gold.
Sell every crap to NPCs that you find also can get you over a few hours some good money and tell the very good stuff in the TP

Even before Anet has changed the dungeons to make them more rewarding, it was already easy to make with them quickly money, by just farming citadel of flames like crazy doing speed runs on path 1 …

If I put together every spent gold I had once, I think I would have currently like 750 to 1000 Gold

Spent gold from buying Minipets, spent gold from usign Waypoints, spent Gold from buying armors, weapons and upgrades, spent gold from buying materials for crafting, spent gold from repairing my equipment from lots of deaths in dungeons ect.

oh and naturall spent gold by turning it into gems xD

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

Three gold short of 400, had 500 at one point, not really because I’ve done anything particularly impressive or even farmed a lot, just got a few lucky drops (actually could have turned in to several thousand more if I had waited more time before selling them).

Though I remember before I got those drops how ridiculously difficult it seemed to be to gain anything without mindless farming or exploiting, and yes I do consider running the same dungeon paths over and over again just as much mindless farming as the champ train. And such play (or better said, lack of play) should not be the only option for earning anything.

I have about 27g right now. Max gold I’ve ever had on hand is about 600 gold.. when I bought Spark back in July. I have 3 legendary weapons, Sunrise, Dreamer, and Incinerator and then Vision of the Mists and Wintersbark for other expensive weapons.. I know where all my gold went, into pretty things.

And that, IMO, is how it should be. Horizontal progression to improve one’s appearance.

I’ll leave the debate against the various gold sinks and ways to spend gold to be parsed out amongst the handful of threads already discussing those aspects.
