Q:

Just curious how much, if any, people have spent on this game following their initial purchase. I’ve probably dropped $100 in the gem store, mainly for the medium armor sets and gathering tools.

$60, for the game itself. I have proudly not used a single dollar to buy gems, and I don’t intend ever to do so.

I’ve paid my money for this game, stop telling me to “support it”, defending crappy RNG practices and overpriced goods.

I’m not criticizing GW2 itself, this game is AWESOME! But the monetization….

Unless anything has changed since they introduced Black Lion Ticket Scraps, they are one of the most unethical business practices I’ve ever seen in the gemstore. Their drop rate are so low, the intention isn’t to give us a fair chance, but rather their sheer existence is to trap people into opening more chests, pressuring them to gamble even more with hopes of collecting 10 scraps.

And then they actually expect some people to collect 7 Black Lion Tickets? For a single weapon skin? Really? How much does that equate in USD? Seriously, I’m asking the question. Someone calculate how much USD on average it costs to collect 7 tickets, then tell me if you’re willing to spend that much money.

Look, the GW2 playerbase could spend their money on whatever they want, but I don’t intend to do so because the monetization is absolutely horrendous. Even if we could play the game without this gemstore crud, it’s still like taking a dump on someone’s birthday cake. Sure, they could try to eat the pieces of the cake without feces on it, but who would want to eat such a thing?

Placing an ugly person next to a nice person doesn’t make the nice person look better by contrast. It just makes both of them look ugly.

I really wish the monetization would stop killing GW2’s reputation.

Close to 100 dollars total in both the box purchase and gems, I bought the game for early access. Gamble boxes aren’t the only thing in the gemstore. I got character slots and bank slots and that’s about it.

I live in Vegas and I’m not dumb enough to go to the casinos. Not like I’m missing out on anything. Maybe people playing this game should take a hint and do the same if it bothers them so much?

In WoW it costs 25 dollars to transfer each character, there isn’t even an option to transfer all of them. To transfer 11 characters, the max limit per server, it costs 275 dollars.. That’s not even mentioning if you want a faction change as well (30 dollars each). On top of that you’re paying 15 dollars a month and their cash shop sells helmets for 15 dollars each, mounts for 25 dollars, and minipets are 10 dollars.

SWTOR? It’s like 20 dollars for a set of (cosmetic) armor and they try to force you into a sub fee with the terrible F2P restrictions.

Probably too much. If you constantly remind yourself that you don’t need anything out of the Gem Shop to play, and that at the end of the day it’s all virtual and you’ll have nothing to show for it, you’ll be slightly better off. Individual mileage may vary.

One thing here is that you can also get tickets directly, not just scraps from black lion chests. It’s still not great from the point of view of someone who likes RNG, but you don’t actually need multiple ticket scraps if you get a ticket.

$60 for the pre-release
about $80 in gems
about $50 in armor skins
$30 for 2 server transfers
$20 for makeup kits
$30 for permanent farming tools
about $5 to find out how much black lion keys suck

I regret nothing save the money spent on black lion keys. What’s even more baffling is that I have posted, often, that I would have gladly bought several limited-time weapon skins if Anet would have sold them in the gem store after their related events were over. Apparently this has fallen on death ears. Due to that and the ridiculous grind for ascended weapons, I’ve stopped playing the game.

I can tell you one thing. Paying $10-$15 per month for a subscription fee and earning every armor set and weapon skin that exists in the game by actually playing the game is far, far cheaper than the system that these cash shop games employ. Even if you can straight up purchase the armor skin or weapon skin without gambling your money, where is the sense of accomplishment? I am personally looking forward to Elder Scrolls Online and the fact that it is a subscription game with no cash shop (outside of game services, ie NOT gear) is one reason I am really looking forward to it.

I bought some extra character slots and bank slots, probably like 30-50 euros.

I think cash shop model has become annoying so I sort of regret I put in some money, especially since those extra character slots seem pretty useless if I cannot afford to buy gear for all those 8 characters with in-game currency, not to mention time-gating even if there was enough gold, which seems pretty impossible atm.

I also really despise server transfer costs since WvW is so populated that you’re kind of forced to switch server if you want to play but if you ever want to get back it costs like new box set. Kind of weird in my opinion.

I probably spent about $400-$500 since launch. Some of that went to purchase bank slots and 4 char slots, the rest was spent buying full sets of perma gathering tools for all of my 9 chars.

I know that’s a lot of money for something i feel we should have had in the game to being with, but i couldn’t stand the system of having to keep buying 3 different types of gathering tools, then all different tier ones ugh no.

I even dislike how the node are gathered, having to keep clicking on them if there’s more than 3 chunks of ore or wood to be gathered. it’s especially annoying on a rich node. Gathering should be one action, click on the node and ur char keeps gathering till its done. Sorry to say this, but waaaaay too much clicking in this game.

Nothing beyond the box price.

The Ascended gear fiasco and constant new ways to grind (which I ignore) basically guarunteed I will never spend cash at the gem store. I still enjoy the gameplay and leveling random alts, but just don’t get into the game that seriously since it changed direction. That there’s nothing worthwhile in the store (still) doesn’t help either.

Fortunately I invested heavily in gems during release when they were under 2g, and still have a large collection of them, so my character and bank slots are in good supply.

Here’s the thing, I spent the remaining gems on chest keys. Worst, decision ever. DO NOT do it. Total waste of gems. Because of this, I will NEVER spend a penny on GW2 again.

I don’t mind the character transfer cost or buying extra character slot, but a bank slot…hate it. I mean, they can up the number in the crafting storage, they can offer skin library, they can give us a reason to keep all those ascended rings. Let them trade 5 or 10 in to get one that I want.
