I love my kite it’s so cute! I got the blue air one and I love how it follows me around =D

I really like the animation of them and that they are tiered instead of just a generic kite. They match the other looks of the event.

And I actually really like that it’s just a toy item. As much as I love new skins, if they keep making so many new special skins so fast, y’know..I only have so much armor. So many backpieces. This was just a nice little item that’s fun and it looks awesome, but it is unique from other items. Only could be better if it wasn’t taking up inventory space =/

Yeah it would have been nice if it was like the broomstick where you could put it in that slot and activate it via town clothes and then swap to armor and still have it up. I do that with my broom all the time.

I already used mine as an RP thing. I was cruising around Queensdale when Troll popped and I used my kite to lead everyone into the fight.

Are ‘presents’ for buying gems with real money going to be the norm now? Am I the only one with a bad feeling about this?

You are most definitely not.

Have you enjoyed any of the new content released since launch? If yes than maybe you should thank the people who have brought gems with their hard earned money to support the game and to enable you to enjoy that content. Hey maybe you could thank them by letting them enjoy there cosmetikittentle gift rather than hovering your fingers over the “p” “2” and “w” keys of your keyboard?

Firstly, if that worked you up that much you need to see a professional

Anyway, yes I have enjoyed the content. That doesn’t change the fact that ANet made certain statements pre-launch which they already haven’t held up to, being afraid that their word may ‘slip’ in other areas, including economic ones, is completely reasonable. And that is all that I said, that I am worried.

Finally, read my posts, search my history, on this site, on any site, I have never used the phrase P2W in any context before this very sentence. Quite being a sheep and making assumptions about people you have no reason to nor evidence for.

Guys, it’s a kite. It does nothing. Settle down.

The kite doesn’t really worry me, it’s the trend that could come out of it. Unannounced bonus items which you can’t anticipate, or even know if they’re going to happen… It smells like a bit of a dodgy practice to me if it does turn into a trend.

Of course, if it doesn’t turn into a trend, then my concerns aren’t much more than hot air. But with two ‘presents’ in such quick succession, I don’t think it’s unreasonable skepticism.

Very true.

A small line somewhere, sometime about this, though, would have let them to squeeze a bit more from people who waiver a little on gem purchases.

I worked way too long in retail…

Why small, if I can ask? I don’t see why not to go big. Make it one of the banners in the gem store; “buy x worth of gems this month, get a free kite”.

My brother worked for a company that sent “gifts” to its best customers several times throughout the year…..such as a Christmas ham, and an Easter basket. Ever been to a casino and see how they treat the high-rollers? It’s just a matter of business that the customers who spend the most money, so to speak, do get preferential treatment in some ways. As its been pointed out many, many times on these forums, Anet is in the business to make money.

Not saying its right or wrong, thats just the way it is….

I don’t want the issue raised above to fall by the wayside: bonus stuff for purchasing gems should always be announced during the active time frame. It would spur additional gem purchases and prevent a lot of bad blood afterwards.

Another issue, is that some people prefer to buy gems in bulk, then spend them over the course of weeks and months, while someone who just happened to buy the smallest amount of gems at the right time get free stuff. This is probably what happened to the guy who bought gems for 60 bucks, but before the time window was open, and now goes empty.

And the precedent is there. We had a full mini pack, now we have a kite. I think at this point, anything could come next, even weapon skins. If these bonuses are simply announced, like “buy gems for money from date x to date y and get a free z”, we’d have a win-win scenario: more gems will be sold, and no one is left out because they happened to still had gems left over from a larger bulk purchase before, or bought gems mere days after the window.

No
It is not a bonus- it is a gift

If you announce the dates it is an incentive not a gift.
An incentive to buy gems is a totally different thing and yes it might get them more gem sales because people want free stuff.
That would play on people’s greed.

The mail I received with my Kite said Thank you for continuing to support the game, we appreciate it.

Yep, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I try to buy gems with cash every couple months, not much but just something to show I enjoy the game. It feels really nice to see that they appreciate it. I may be another faceless customer that doesn’t really matter in the long term success of the game, but they made me feel that I really do matter just by a small gesture.

I can just imagine if they do put a notice out “buy gems get a free ____”… how many people would complain the _ isn’t what they thought it would be or what they really wanted?

Oh… that’s were you get that kites… saw yesterday some people posting them in chat. So they did it like with the other mini pack they sent out for free last time?

And you can still buy them in the gem store? How much gems do they cost?
(And don’t say you can’t buy them in gem store – would be stupid and ArenaNet would lose money like this… I’m sure there are a lot of people that bought gems earlier but not in April-June that want to buy a kite now… or people that did not buy gems at all… they should have announced it earlier if it was exclusive so you could buy gems).

A gift that you receive, by surprise, after a purchase is also intended an incentive to do further purchases in the future; “there might be a gift soon if I buy this month” is how it is meant to influence customer thought processes. It is basically the same, with added effect of luring some people into buying gems “just in case”. It is by pure chance whether someone might happen to buy gems in the right time frame or not, regardless of what they do outside that frame, and thus is not given for particularly “supporting the game”.

Let me get this straight- you are suggesting that if you get a surprise gift, next thing you will think- maybe I can make it happen again?
Sorry but no again- I realise Pavlov’s dog is a valid experiment but I think you are taking it a bit far.

I like how you use the word “luring”, so giving an incentive (buy gems to get bonus gift) is not “luring”? Sounds like it to me.

There is no right time frame- it is a gift.
I know they stated that during such and such a time but really- using that phrase just implies the only reason why you would buy gems is to get a gift.

It is for supporting the game- that is what they said themselves in the mail you got with your Kite.
What did you think it was for? RnG gems lucky dip?

I wanted to ask a legit question, about the specifics of gem purchases and uses. I had abou US$125 gifted to me at xmas time (maybe 10,000 gems, can’t remember) and I’m still using them. If I used some of those gems say to get the complete set of the unlimited use gathering equipment, do I qualify for this kite as well?

The reason I ask is because Anet gave me those mini’s from last month’s? content free because I bought/traded gems with them (I forget what the criteria was for it), and I thought it might apply here too, but that’s why I’m asking… it’s a bit of grey area defining when you used gems and when you bought gems.

I kinda agree. While I still think it’s a great gesture from Anet that people get the free kite.
But I agree with you that if people knew they would get the free kite they would act on that fact.
But on the other hand there will always be complainers to deal with, those who do not buy gems and feel left out.

I have no problem with ANet randomly handing out candy to supporters.

The only people this really sucks for, I think, are those who deliberately saved up all their gems so they could afford a kite later, and find out they would have been better off buying a black lion key and getting the kite for free.

But… well. How common is that?

Not sure where you are going with that. It’s for buying gems not buying items. As far as I know gems have to be bought at a minimum of 800 at a time. A black lion key cost 125 gems.

I don’t know, but I happen to have bought 800 gems in advance for the flute, but perhaps a bit too early. I didn’t get my kite. I’ve always loved this game for it being poor-people-friendly, but this slap in the face was pretty ouchy.
