I am NOT a Hero
when everyone feels like a hero every day, then no one is truly a hero.
I don’t care what everyone else feels like when they play, I play to change how I feel.
…
I don’t care what others have achieved, I play for the things I achieve.
…
I don’t care what skins everyone else is wearing, how common the new shiny is or how 1337 their gear/appearance is, I care about how my characters look while I’m out mowing down bad guys with my new shiny. If someone else (or everyone else) has that same shiny, good for them.
…
I don’t care what roles other people have played in this ongoing story, I care about how I am part of this evolving world and what my role is, has been, and will be. So far my role in the changing of this world hasn’t been all that impressive or grand (to me).
…
If I wanted someone else taking credit for something I did then I’d stay in the real world instead of escaping to this fantasy game where I could be recognized, cheered and rewarded for my actions.
…
There is far too much real world making its way into this fantasy game.So I am left being just a random dude roaming the countryside in an attempt to escape game content that seems no different from the real world content that I play the game to escape.
I am Random Guy…I’ll be in the woods if you need me.
Yep, I don’t care what anyone else feels either. I feel like a hero.
Wish you were here.
Anyone else feel like they want to join the elder dragons side? I often feel sorry for how us heroes utterly destroy everything with minimal effort.

Hi Vayne
I’m not saying I’ve never felt like a hero while playing GW2, just that in relation to the Personal Story and Living Story, I’m not all that impressed with them in terms of being Player-centric. I like some of the group dynamics to where I am a cog in a big machine and all that, but the Living Story should have been “Cog” material, Personal Story should have been all about us and our journey to becoming the hero (hence, “personal”)…instead of being somewhat of a smalltime hero up to level 30ish and then all of our history, our decisions, our friends, our growth as a character…they no longer mattered after that. I feel we were reduced to the level of nothing more than a random henchman from GW1…someone to function only as an aide to the real hero.
So, I’ve long since focused only on the content that I really enjoy (primarily roaming countrysides and wandering through the woods) and completely ignore all the different Personal Storylines since I know where they all go after level 30 and it’s not fun to me.

I don’t know I have another view completely about this. I like Skyrim but found I couldn’t play it as long as I’d like because one character can be the guy who saves the world and the head of the thieves guild, the assassins guild, the magic guild, the companions….it just doesn’t make sense to me. Any one of those things should preclude others.
There’s such a thing as being “too much” the hero. Let’s harken back to something like Lord of the Rings, which is the grand daddy of all this. Was there are fellowship. or was there not? Was the battle of helm’s deep won by Aragorn soloing the orc army?
When I play games like this, I want to feel like I’m a hero, but I also want to feel like I’m part of something bigger. I get that in Guild Wars 2 (and never really did from Skyrim).
I feel like a hero because it was me who helped solve the sky pirate murder mystery. It was me and some allies who took down the Molten Facility.
As for the current “election”, my support doesn’t mean more than anyone else’s, nor should it. I’m just one guy and this issue should be bigger than one guy.
I’ve often identified myself as a writer on these forums. There are a few things I really dislike about the fantasy genre as it stands and when I write, I try to avoid those “pitfalls”. For example, I dislike the fact that every fantasy novel seems to be against some evil entity that’s going to destroy or take over the world. I don’t even like evil for the sake of evil. I prefer “evil” characters to think they’re justified and have decent motivation. In this, Guild Wars 2 fails my test of good fiction. Why the hell does Zhaitan care about us at all, or want us all dead?
But I don’t want to feel like a 24/7 hero. I want to do heroic things while at the same time being part of something larger.
The only times I feel like I’m a ‘hero’ in an MMO were those few incidents where I stumbled upon a player near death. Those experiences alone, by themselves, hold more weight than everything in the GW2 story combined.
I am a computer gamer who wastes way too much time on an overall useless activity like playing a computer game, controlling a set of pixels that is barely different from the non-entity of Trahearne.
The “titles” you get when you join one of the three orders you don’t actually get to use them. Would be nice if you could.
SPOILER POSSIBLE
When you join Durmand Priory you become a Magister, but you don’t get the title so you can’t actually use it.

This is a good point. I totally think these should be something you could wear. It would help build the bond between you and the choices you made for your character.

I am fearless in my pursuit of cleaning the undead out of what once was a beautiful land…
I am the helping hand that jumps in, heedless of my own safety, to help those I care about or those simply in need….
I am mortal in my need to sometimes step back and take a break from my efforts, chilling out with humorous things like local festivals and obscure tasks….
I have grown in strength and cunning in my travels, made friends and even a few enemies…
I am simply ‘me.’

I killed Zhaitan… wait, I still dont know what happened. It just seem that it shows up and died on the mountain without me doing anything.

You should have followed the story better. You’d already by that time blinded and starved him, as well as crippling his ability to make more undead. Also the weapon used to take him down was developed by an Asuran who gets saved in the Asuran story line who you actually meet if you play that storyline. It uses special anti-dragon energy to bring him down.
So by the time you take him down, you’ve already done the damage. The boss fight starts at around level 70 and continues until the end of Arah.

That doesn’t mean he should just sit on a pillar and doing nothing for the fight… At that point we may as well have not even fought him and let him starve to death.
I’m the guy that killed the big frog in a test simulation for Moto.
Did you really just cite the super adventure box as heroly? XD
There’s nothing as heroic as saving Miya and defeating Lord Vanquish in the Super Adventure Box.
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”
exactly… back then you killed a god, made a new one from a mortal, the world was in danger and you saved it… now you just…linger… killing the troll/oak/wasp/boar, stopping flame legion in cof for the thousanth time…not heroic…
even (oh lord help me) WoW had an amazing heroic feeling, Illidan, Lich king, deathwing…You notice how you name the villains when you talk about getting a heroic feeling?
Decent villains are necessary for any memorable heroic story. Right now we haven’t had any.
The Elder Dragons are just generic evil force, their minions are mind-controlled pawns of their masters and then we get villains like Canach, who was nothing but a failed businessman whose major villainous talent was completely messing up everything he touches to an life-threatening degree.
There was much that I didn’t like about WoW but Illidan would not deign to be counted among this bunch.
But I’m remaining hopeful. There are interesting and rather underused villains like Faolain and Caudecus. There is still potential for our characters to face epic and memorable villains. The recent interview with Bobby Stein shows that ArenaNet is putting some serious thought into how they are presenting the stories. Let’s hope they don’t forgot what it takes to tell a good one.
idk wow, but seems to me gw2 is just not dark enough. these villains are just too soft…
crescendo is as big as the difference between lowest point and highest point. gw2’s lowest point is way too high.
carving pumpkins doesnt help here.
there was also mention about the “goofy” feeling about the game. i couldnt agree more. this game is a big joke. literally. there is nothing serious about it. just stop with the bad jokes arenanet. some people might appreciate it, but when i’m running around waiting for some NPC asura to get to his punch line, it is neither funny anymore, nor epic.
start being serious about your game. you have mature audience here. i do not want to play in cartoon.

I’m the guy that solved the murder of a Lion’s Arch captain.
I’m the guy that stopped a major invasion plot by sky pirates.I am the hero, whether or not there’s an audience to say so. The rest of the fluff in between is fun stuff to do in my down time from saving everyone….
I think you’re confusing yourself with Dulfy.
twitch.tv/mdogg2005
I don’t know. I’ve been a hero. Last month I solved a murder mystery while fighting off sky pirates.
Oh, you mean you’re not a hero today.
Seems to me that even in Guild Wars 1, after you finished the content, you weren’t a hero either. Take Nightfall. Komir becomes a God and you’ve one. It’s over. Much like this story.
Except Trahearne actually doesn’t take credit for slaying Zhaitan in fact, he wasn’t even there. He says at the end he wishes he was and how you’re a hero and how you’ve earned a break.
I’m not sure what kind of games that you guys are playing where you’re a hero every day 24/7.
Since that time we’ve fought off the Karka invasion, we’ve stopped the dredge and flame legion from cementing an alliance…oh right.
Maybe you guys aren’t paying attention.
Rght On
So all things I do on a daily basis in WoW, except on a much smaller scale? Okay In WoW, you actually make a difference. You’re on a major boss fight and your tank disconnects, oh man, this isn’t Guild Wars 2 and we can’t replace him with a random nobody that has no idea what they’re doing. We need an experienced tank that has done this multiple times. Maybe he’ll even give us some insight as to how we can better defeat the boss.
Everybody counts in a raid/dungeon/event in WoW. You lose one player and you lose a valuable role.
Guild Wars 2 mentality: Group member disconnects “Replace him with anyone, it doesn’t matter who we pick.”
At Jormag: “Oh, a player disconnected? Big whoop, he wasn’t valuable.”
I definitely don’t feel like a hero at all when I can be replaced by someone who has no clue as to what they’re doing.
And to answer you, I suppose that most people feel that they’re solving petty crimes that don’t matter at all in the big picture. Oh my gosh, an entire ship full of sky pirates is about to attack an entire freaking city. Whatever are we going to do when they land? Oh, let’s just get 1,000 people from the city and beat them into submission. You see, it doesn’t feel as epic as an “entire fleet of enemy ships with the intent to take over Lions Arch and all major cities all over Tyria.”
When people play other games, the above event is what they experience. An entire fleet of enemies coming at them and hopeless odds that they could never deal with, but find a way to overcome. Then they come to Guild Wars 2 and a single ship is flying at them. Big deal, my Night Elf Druid in WoW could take on 10 of those ships with a taco in his hand.
The point this is that you should feel like a hero every day. You deserve to with all the quests you complete. Instead, you feel like a common peasant most days and then rise to the high ranking status of a peasant warrior every two weeks.
I don’t know I remember running a whole lot of bullkitten quests in WoW. And in a five man party in WoW, the healer has a role, the tank has a role and 3/5 of the people are replacable canon fodder than no one cares about. 3/5s of your party are meaningless.
When I play Guild Wars 2 with a guild, we know who the good guys in the guild are. We know who is more of a team player and helps keep people alive. It’s not as obvious, but one of my guildies plays an ele and when he’s in the party, we know he’s popping heals, removing conditions, rezzing and generally helping out…the difference is it’s not limited to two guys.
I can go rez someone, I can heal, remove conditions, or generally help anyone WHILE DPSing. This is something that some people can’t seem to get their head around.
If all you do is pug and you think that’s the game, then that’s your game…it’s sure not mine.
And in WoW, I didn’t feel like a hero, because there was no immediacy to anything I did. No real reaction. I sat and used the same skills in the same order to maximize my damage. My son used to tank while eating dinner and playing another game on his phone at the same time.
If you think the Claw of Jormag is what Guild Wars 2 is about, I don’t really know what to say to you.
Truth. If only everyone could read this post, GW2 would be a better place.

OP, I have good news! In terms of the criticisms listed, I personally would say that Colin agrees with you (or at least hears you). Read the latest blog about where they want to take the game going forward. It doesn’t sound like temporary content and platformer mini-games will be center stage.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/looking-ahead-guild-wars-2-in-2013/
In GW2 you are a nobody. You DO NOT matter!
I agree. I think Colin said “The monsters don’t care if you’re standing there. I fight a monster, it spawns back 10 minutes later. We kill it, and it respawns again. This isn’t the direction we want to take.” Yet, that’s exactly what they did here.
All major dragons spawn, are killed, and respawn later. They really don’t give a single flying crap that I’m there. As far as I can tell, the world hasn’t changed at all because of my actions. The personality types (dignity, charm, ferocity) don’t matter at all when I talk to people, so it doesn’t change anything.
I don’t want to be a hero anyway :P

Yes, let’s have Dragon Champions (Lieutenants, to be more precise) that only spawn once… ever. Reminds me of a fight… oh, what was that name… I can’t remember it… OH THAT’S RIGHT, THE Ancient Karka battle. I wonder how well that went.
I feel like a hero every time I do hot join sPvP.
I dunno, I feel like a hero with the single-player story, and I feel pretty heroic when I’m wandering around saving villagers, etc. I also feel heroic when I play well and beat someone in PvP, or a difficult mob in PvE.

So Mr smartiepants…in your infinite wisdom, could you please explain why Anet said they didn’t want to go this way if in fact, as you say, it is unavoidable?
Because no matter how you find the extreme opposite ridiculous, you have said nothing about the point that Anet said something and surprise surprise, they didn’t stick to it. Do you call that lying or something else?

The manifesto was their ideals before the release of the game. Things change (who woulda thought Ascended items would come out? Fractals? I’m quite sure the devs at Arenanet didn’t, but they made it because a lot of the Vertical Gear Grinders wanted some Vertical Gear to Grind.
Take a step back and think about what Arenanet has done/is doing because of the masses. Sure, you might not be part of the masses, but when you think of a PUG, what do you think of? Now multiply that by millions and that’s what drives a company to make the bad choices they do (either that or just pure greed).
Inversely, what do you suggest they do? You can complain all you want about what someone didn’t do [right], but if you don’t say what they can do better, you’re not contributing to anything.
Don’t get me wrong. I am very excited about those changes. The only thing that takes steam off of that excitement was a complete neglect of their aforementioned “answer to the raid”. It was beyond disheartening to see that just washed aside when I am sure that many people were just as excited about it as I WAS. All in all, I love GW2. But it is EARLY in its life so devs are still trying to figure things out. What I relate it to is a scene in the Social Network where Zuckerburg’s CFO was trying to capitalize on the success of what was then referred to as “The Facebook”. Zuckerberg-at least in the movie-said “We don’t even know what it is yet. We don’t know what it is.” That is kind of where the devs are. They have this product in a fiercely competitive and dynamic market that has worked by some mixture of luck, talent, and timing. Right now they are searching for a unique identity and niche for it and they wish to ultimately discover how far they can take it. There is nothing wrong with that. And in that spirit of experimentation I would say Anet has done nothing wrong thus far (aside from the final Zhaitan fight that was just good awful, lol.)
So fanboys will say “if they have done nothing wrong then what’s the problem? Why are you making posts like this”? Well, as an invested fan of GW2 it is my responsibility to steer the devs in the right direction. Silent or overly empathetic mouths do NOTHING for the future of a game that has the potential to be remarkably great.

You’re still singling out one fight from an entire dungeon and calling it a boss fight. It’s not a boss fight. It’s the epilog of the dungeon.
People wanted it to be a boss fight. they call it a boss fight…but it’s really not. You never really directly fight Zhaitan.
That’s where the issue comes in.
I think boss fights are, over all, silly and I can’t stand any of them really. I dont’ like them in dungeons. I don’t like them in the world. I’d rather fight a war against a ton of opponents like most of the events in Hirathi than fight something like Jormag. The war feels more epic to me.
I’m an Engineer.
I’ll hit you with my peashooter
I’ll annoy you with my plethora of immobolizes
I’ll hit you with grenades
Then I’ll die to retaliation.

Yeah, it’s a problem, but there’s something sillier to witness. This massive force of destruction so powerful it can threaten the world time and time again, so powerful it simply had to be outlasted until it went to sleep before? And one to five mortals with no assistance from anything at all take it down.
I think that would be mocked a lot more than “Press 2 to win”.
I can see it now: “Big, deadly, god-killing dragon . . . goes down from a engineer autoattack.”

It’s not a massive force by the time you get to it. It’s a weakened force. We have zero evidence that Zhaitan was so powerful except in its ability to raise the dead, which we took from it.
In my book, the fight with Zhaitan was only meant to be the epilogue of the entire battle. We fought a starving, blinded, weakened boss.
I don’t feel like a hero, but I try to do heroic things.
- I help others who ask in map chat, even questions that has been asked many times before
- I provide service to my guildmates, by ensuring we have all necessary buffs, and missions to do weekly
- I share all of our missions [Bounty, Rush, Puzzle, Challenge] both in and out of our own home server, for guildless players and players from other guilds
- I ask many of our guildmates who haven’t spoken a word, if they need any help
- I report botters and exploiters
I just enjoy the scenery, do fun stuff, and make sure our guild lives up to our goal: a guild that operates on the idea of altruism

It’s not a massive force by the time you get to it. It’s a weakened force. We have zero evidence that Zhaitan was so powerful except in its ability to raise the dead, which we took from it.
It doesn’t mean he had to be a pushover. There was a LOT of build up in the story that all pointed to Zhaitan. He’s not just the epilogue to the dungeon, he’s the final boss of the entire personal story. So when the fight in question is one of the most uninvolving, debatably ‘unheroic’ fights in the game, I don’t think it’s unfair for people to be disappointed.

It’s not unfair, and I agree that it’s probably much of an anticlimax. Unfortunately, that’s what we got and a reason why (“We kinda sorta maybe just a little didn’t have time to do something bigger.”)
If we make it far enough to see the next Dragon, I really hope it’s not as ‘lame’ and is much more a fitting climax to the path. Also I hope Trahearne quietly disappears so people can stop complaining about him, thank you.
to be fair, the fight against zhaitan wasn’t so much of a fight as it was…… anime porn. i mean, we’re shooting white goo at a giant tentacle monster. the only thing missing was a teenaged girl with a 4 inch waistline and a chest the size of two watermelons wearing a skimpy schoolgirl outfit that exposed her white hello kitty panties. sure, there was logan, and he ain’t too far off, but he and the rest of destiny’s edge were dead on the ground the whole time.
Yes, let’s have Dragon Champions (Lieutenants, to be more precise) that only spawn once… ever. Reminds me of a fight… oh, what was that name… I can’t remember it… OH THAT’S RIGHT, THE Ancient Karka battle. I wonder how well that went.
I prefer people don’t make promises they actually know or should know they can’t keep. This is not unique to Anet but I often wonder if these guys believe their own hype.
I specifically doubt that they changed the storyline completely after the manifesto for example. Knowing that you are reduced to a sidekittenoon as Trahearne hits the stage, therefore means that half the story is not “I am a hero” but “I was there when Trahearne saved the world”.
Sorry but they knew this and they spun it the way the needed it for sales.
What Anet needs to do to change this around, is when the level cap gets raised (as it was already said this would happen at some point) is to put our characters into the center spotlight again. My direct suggestion is that it starts with Trahearne being corrupted and he becomes the end boss of a new dungeon.
I am sure I am not the only one who’d love the chance to kill him. If the world needs me to save it I feel heroic. If the world need another sidekick to aid the npc heroes, then I don’t feel heroic.
So there you go.

Look I’m not saying anyone shouldn’t be disappointed. I’m saying I wasn’t personally disappointed. You could hardly stop anyone from feeling about something the way they feel.
But I was looking at the entire thing as one piece. I’m an older gamer. I don’t think in terms of boss fights.
I agree they could have give players more to do, but you know, it’s a long dungeon. Just getting there was annoying enough.
Still, it would have been better to have a more hands on attack on Zhaitan, for those who are disappointed.
Knowing that you are reduced to a sidek— as Trahearne hits the stage, therefore means that half the story is not “I am a hero” but “I was there when Trahearne saved the world”.

I hate to break it to you but Trahearne still hasn’t saved the world, claimed credit for anything he’s not due, or even been the most awesome person in the room.
(That’s still Tybalt by the way, who sends his greetings from Southsun Cove where he is drinking from tall glasses with fruit on little sticks in them.)
Orr is . . . not even saved, but the first step is done. We don’t know how long it will take to clean it up or even what’s going to happen now that Zhaitan is finished and the Source is purified.
Now there’s still the issue of the Icebrood, the Branded, the Destroyers and their masters.
World’s not saved yet. Time to get up and get started again, work’s still calling.
I am a hero by trade…
My regular business hours are between ‘daily reset’ and ‘wheneverthefuxImdonewithmydaily’.
If you require my heroic assistance after hours I would gladly make an appointment to heroically ignore you unless it involves something remotely material in value.
…this is my story

It’s not just about “thinking in terms of bossfights”, it’s about a proper climax to both the dungeon and story. It doesn’t have to be a direct fight with Zhaitan, either: I’d be alright if he was as weak as a baby quaggan as long as it meant we got to fight the Risen’s five greatest bad*****. I’d probably like that more, honestly.

Oh no yeah definitely, it has a lot of issues, and I don’t know if even the most epic of fights could make up for it.
I’m the guy who helped stop the Shadow Behemoth from starting a slow invasion into the Masses of Kyrta
I’m the guy who helped the Shining Blade learn more and prevent a large scale uprising of a new wave of White Mantle
I’m the guy who befriended a lone Charr thought to be worthless, and gave him confidence to help save his fellow man
I’m the guy who defended the Chantry of Secrets from a Risen attack when said lone Charr was forced to give information in death
I’m the man who took back Claw Island, Joined the three Orders together under a common goal, infiltrated a long lost city of the Gods and cut down resources and manpower of an Undead Dragon who has been plaguing Tyria for years now.
And soon, I shall help defeat said Dragon and bring the world a step closer to peace.
And in my down time, I’m a guy who goes around killing wild life because they for some reason have Uncommon Weapons on them… and because it’s fun.
I am a Hero, albeit not the best, nor am I alone, because dozens of other Heroes have arisen as well, fighting the same issues alongside me.
I am also a random person, running around town screaming “For Great Justice!” as I smack a bear in the face with a hammer.
What’s your story?

Sigh, Zhaitan was killed blah blah blah. Call it what you want. The main story is over and as it stands Trahearne is the main man from the moment he comes in the story pretty much.
Please don’t focus on whether or not it meant saving the world. The hero of the story was Trahearne, not my character. My point was clearly not whether we saved the world or not but the fact that Trahearne is the main character in the second half of the story line. So please respond to that part. If it’s so important to you that the world is actually technically not saved, well fine. You win we didn’t save the world. But feel free to respond to the main point which is that Trahearne is the main character in this story and not the player’s character.

Believe it or not, the reason for this isn’t to backhand every player in the game, its because Lore cannot allow us, the players, to be the Hero. A lot of games like WoW or Guild Wars 2, generally have a funny way of calling you a Hero just to have credit yanked from you by some guy who didn’t do shizz. Although, it is HEAVILY implied that he is perhaps doing said shizz somewhere. For the story of the game to make sense, it needs to have a figure-head to adore and cheer for. Someone for the rest of the NPC world to turn to and say “He’s our Hero who saved us” because it’s literally impossible for us to be recognized. Do you know how many statues they would need to build if we were the Heroes!? Dear gods… So yes, in the beginning of the game you are sorta looked to as a “Hero”. That’s why they give you a fancy shmancy title like Hero of Shaemoor. The most to hope for as to being recognized is to hope that somewhere it says “Trehearne and a group of Heroes brought down Zhaitan”. Honestly, that’s enough credit for most people too.

First of all, when Zhaitan is killed, it’s not the end of the story, it’s the beginning of the story. The game even says that in pretty much those words. It’s the first act of a very long play.
Secondly, Trahearne not only wasn’t the man, he wasn’t even there. I don’t know about you but the guy sitting at the desk pushing papers is not the guy who’s in the field winning battkitten th may be necessary but it doesn’t take away from anything you’ve done.
