Just wanted to stop by and say, well, I’m loving Guild Wars 2!
This weekend I’m supposed to be in a beta stress test for another game which shall remain nameless, but playing that for a few hours last night made me realise just how much this game has compared to all other mmos!
Bit of background: I bought this game at launch, played for a couple of weeks, but due to the lack of linear progression, the lack of npcs telling me where to go next and the fact that the personal story wasn’t always readily available, I quit.
I came back a few weeks ago, and wow have I been missing out!
I’ve played many other mmos (LOTRO, SWTOR, CO, STO, Tera, TSW, and most recently FFXIV to name a few) so know a thing or two about what I like and dislike. I think the reasons I’ve finally fallen in love with this game are as follows:
- The ‘dynamic’ nature – yes, I know, nothing here is truly dynamic. But I love the fact I can set my goals based on where I want to go – not based on how many levels or tokens I need to collect. I can login with one goal (explore a village for example) and during my travels I’ll save the town, help the locals, find some beautiful locations and ding a few levels.
- The combat – I love the dodge, simple as that. You need to pay attention to combat in this game, you can’t just spam keys 1-4 subconsciously, and that makes for a much more engaging experience.
- The world – it feels truly alive. Again this is somewhat down to the ‘dynamic’ nature of things, there’s always something unexpected happening, wherever you are. Add to that the npc dialogue, the random conversations you’ll eavesdrop on along your way, and it truly feels like a living, breathing world.
- The UI – very clean, very simple. One bugbear (and it is a biggie) is there being no UI slots for consumables, as a result, I buy very little, but there have been a few times a healing potion of some kind would’ve come in handy for sure!
- The ingame community – are fantastic. The whole casual group nature of the game fits perfectly with my playstyle. You’ll meet people along the way that you fight with, grouped or ungrouped and there’s no competition there, just camaraderie.
- The sidequests and points of interest. Diving goggles? Mini games? If you want to take a break from questing (which despite the marketing, does get grindy at times) there’s still plenty to do, again it all feeds into this being a complete, living world.
- No subscription fee – don’t get me wrong, I’ve bought more than my fair share of currency for transmutation stones etc, but I love that I have access to the whole game right off the bat.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not gushing for the sake of it, there are things missing I’d love to see or simply issues which I’ve found difficult.
- Yes, I’m sorry but mounts is one, regardless of waypoint travel, it just doesn’t feel the same not being able to ride through this world in style.
- The aforementioned consumable UI slots is another.
- A better vanity system or an easier way to obtain transmutation stones.
- The ability to have guilds linked at character level rather than account level – there is no anonymity in this game whatsoever, so if you want to take a break and chill on your own, good luck!
- The sheer number of possible builds. I found this so overwhelming! Almost to the point of dealbreaking. There are just far too many combinations all serving their own purpose, I’m not a very technical guy, so picking/making a build out of the thousand odd possible combinations of skills/traits/armor etc is a bit of a headache.
- Better FPS in crowded zones. I’ve got a pretty meaty build of a PC, it’s not top of the pile but it’s certainly high end, so it was surprising to see my FPS plummet in Lion’s Arch.
So in short (okay this is anything but short), this is a great mmo. There’s a lot here that other mmos I’ve played have all sorely lacked. I think the reason I quit GW2 initially is because I simply didn’t ‘get it’. I was waiting to be told what to do, waiting for the npcs to start sending me on my way and I kept comparing it to everything else I had played up until that point. Once I chilled out, realised it’s all about the exploration and journey and just went on my way, I fell in love!
Thanks guys – keep up the good work!
