Dear Anet,

I’m ready to buy gems for that unlimited wood axe or plant harvester. I see you have a version of the mining pick up but I already have that. I was either away, or lacked the money the last time you had those items available, but today I’m ready. Tomorrow, I’m not so sure. Sorry, I don’t trust anyone enough to prepay for something that may, or may not exsist in the near future. Please don’t take it personally.

P.S. I love your game. I’m not really a fan boy because I don’t agree with everything you have done, but I do agree with enough to continue to recommend your game to friends.

Love always, lucky.

Reading comprehension for the win. You are right though. I just don’t feel comfortable dishing out real life cash for something that hasn’t even been promissed. I know it’s not much money.

Well, seeing as they’ve released a new mining pick, it isn’t far fetched to say that they’ll release new axes and sickles.

Never pay money to play this game. They create pain points on purpose, it has nothing to do with fun.

I read and comprehended, ignorance is bliss you know?
They have not and will not promise them but it’s good for their continued bank balance to keep adding new versions of these unlimited tools. I have the original 3 on my main, any new versions look good for my alts for example.

If you don’t like that Anet has items available for a limited time you should not buy gems.
Anet is now using gems for their main income (Not expansions like in gW1) this means that they use marketing techniques to try and get people to buy gems. Making stuff temporary might seem as not working (because you can’t buy it anymore) but in fact is a marketing technique based on creating a sense or urgency. They will just put a similar items in at a later time. It makes the game worse but it works to generate more income.

So if you don’t like those sort of thinks (and there are many in GW2.. for example the fact that gold out rules everything else is also related to that) you need to understand where they come from. Thats the fact that they focus on the cash-shop. Then you also know what you can do about it. Not buying gems in this case.

If course they need to make money but they can do that with expansions like they did in GW1.

Well that’s purely an opinion of course. On the other hand I for one think that things such as the LFG tool, finally deserved rewards for killing champs, MF spread across all chars and not gear involved as well as many other things that have been added are a few good examples of where my opinion is contrary to yours. But again it’s only an opinion, my opinion.

I think they can do it with both expansions as well as the gem store as well as not having to rely on limited timed items.

Let’s be honest here, how many people buy things because they are limited to a certain time limit? I guess that would depend on the actual content, but even then I see no reason that people wouldn’t buy things without that “urgency” hanging over their head.

Good examples of course are the unlimited gathering tools. Any new player given the chance to see these items available and how much of a boon it would be to have one would simply buy it for its use. I don’t believe people ONLY buy things because they believe they will be special because they have things other players never will be able to get again. I think that line of thinking is old fashioned and belongs to other games…..or in the least apply to only certain things like minis…..

I don’t think they were going to take it personally if you didn’t pre-pay for an item they’re not selling right now. That would be silly, and they’d have no idea what item you were pre-paying for anyway. I don’t think they expect people to buy gems without any intent to spend those gems (or most of them, anyway,) right away.

So is this just a passive-aggressive way of protesting limited-time items?

Indeed I think there are some items where it makes no sense at all. But overall it does work. It is a marketing trick that has proven itself over many years so by thinking it would not really work that well you go against years and years of proof for companies that it does work.

The sense of urgency it not based on the idea that they want it because other people will not be able to get it anymore. That might help as well (wen trying to create a ‘unique’ char but then it does not fit items like mini’s) but for sure it’s not the only reason and it’s not the reason behind temporay items.. It’s really the urgency. I never gave that reason so I am not sure why you are telling me thats not a why people buy something.. I never said that it was.

I don’t want Anet to focus on all, they should focus on expansion. They might till have the gem-store to get income but that should be more extra while expansions have the focus because only then we get rid of the bad side-effects.

Those are systems, not content. While they can certainly make the game that exists better, they can’t really change standing dynamics in the game.

No I wasn’t implying you were saying/meaning about the “I have to get that nao because it will make me special!” thing. Lol I just get the feeling (especially from other games and seeing it there) that that is EXACTLY the reason why some people like to buy limited timed items and I don’t know, that kind of thing just seems shallow to me.

Bringing in a steady stream of cosmetics as well as fun things would easily keep that cash flow coming in for them if done right. I just don’t see the need for things such as the gathering tools and such to be time limited.

After all variety can be a factor for people buying things too. Meaning a new player might join the game in a years time and see 4-5 different versions of an unlimited gathering tool and might decide to just collect them all and use on different alts. Buy time limiting these ones already past, they are shooting themselves in the foot for lack of a better term.

They are still content and besides the person I was replying to did not give his definition of “content”. My point is still valid, we are getting quality additions to the game in these updates.

If you want me to give examples of what your definition of content is, sure here goes:

1 – Scarlett Invasions are still on going.

2 – So too are some of the minigames that have been added since release, you can play these whenever and even do so to help you complete your daily.

That’s 2 that I can think of off the top of my head. Not bad considering they have said that this year is about polishing. Take that into account with the other things I have mentioned (as well as not) and it all still being free, no one can say we are getting a bad deal here.
