Dear ArenaNet, thank you for a fantastic game! I love it!

I have several level 80 characters and I would love to further develop their lore by assembling a guild for 5 of them, much like Destiny’s Edge. I would like to name my guild:

Fate’s Fulcrum

Alas, there is a problem. Apostrophes are not permitted characters for guild or character names. So, what are my other options?

Fates Fulcrum or The Fulcrum of Fate

These are unacceptable alternatives, in my opinion. I really care about using correct spelling, grammar and punctuation in my real life as well as while assuming my in-game persona. It really bothers me, for example, when I see someone who has spelled their name wrong in order to use the name they wanted. Have a little bit of respect for your character! Get creative rather than settling for some kind of ‘sloppy seconds’ alternative! I think about it all day when this happens. If I see several people with names spelled wrong, I think about each one for at least a day, so you could see how my weeks get filled up fast.

Please consider this, ArenaNet! Several types of alternative characters are already permitted in naming. Why not expand it to include the apostrophe? I believe there must be many other players who agree with me. Speak up, silent masses, speak up!

Please take your tinfoil hats off and be reasonable. ~ReginaB

I am sorry, but I’ll have to disagree with your suggested need of apostrophes in naming aspects of this game. I am only saying this because the term “The Fulcrum of Fate” is the exact same thing as “Fate’s Fulcrum” in meaning and interpretation. It’s implied that the Fulcrum is owned, and a part of, Fate. There’s really no benefit with having it one way or another.

For the created Destiny’s Edge, it’s an exception to the rule because it’s a story based NPC set up. This is like how Braham has unique armor and weapon you cannot get anywhere else; also Rox has specifically designed eyes that are not available to other Charr.

I don’t think exclusivity of apostrophes is quite the same as exclusivity of armor and other things related to NPC character appearance, so I have to disagree. Also, while The Fulcrum of Fate can be interpreted as having the same meaning as Fate’s Fulcrum, it just doesn’t have the same ring to it! It’s inferior, in my opinion. What if Destiny’s Edge was called The Edge of Destiny? There is a difference, and it is very important to me. But I thank you for contributing your point of view to this discussion!

I agree!

Also the alternative would become “The Fulcrum Of Fate”, with the big “O”. I wish words like “of” and “the” wouldn’t automatically begin with uppercase when it’s in the middle of a sentence …

Ironically there 2nd Guild Wars 2 book is called “The Edge of Destiny” and is all about the story and fall of Destiny’s Edge. Just saying….

It was a sad day when launch came and there was no option for apostrophes in guild names

If they do add apostrophes, I certainly hope they let us change guild names.. Had to go with Freedoms Thrashers since Freedom’s Thrashers was unavailable XD

Yeah, that’s what really annoys me. I’m playing a nobleman with a corresponding story and I’d like to call my char “Dude van Dudsen” (just an example of course), it looks stupid with an upper V.

There’s more: Mcallister looks a good deal stupider than McAllister, and Obrien for O’Brien is unacceptable.

I do think apostrophes, dashes, and mixed case should be available when naming your guild OR character.
