I love GW2, I do. The only reason I am writing this is because there’s so much to the game that I am in awe of. But I keep asking myself, while I play, “Why do I feel so bored with such a great game?” It’s not just me either. I can’t get many of my friends to play, they all have gotten bored with the game as well.

So I played each of the major mmo’s to find out what the difference was for me.

Visually the game is amazing. So much detail and beauty, nothing out there even comes close.

Operationally the game is nearly perfect. From the “infinite” crafting bags to not having to join each toon to a guild separately. NOTHING beats this game operationally.

So then, why do I have to nearly force myself to play? Here’s what I figured out:

SOUND: The sounds are maddeningly repetitive.

The environment sounds are okay. The waterfalls, winds, birds. There could be more variety here.

The music is NOT okay. It’s mostly Dr’s office music and it’s repetitive. It’s the same music in every zone and that should not be the case. If a zone looks different it should have music as varied as the visuals.

If I enter a cave full of spiders, I want “exploring a cave full of spiders” music. Not the same music I heard in an open grassy field. I’m an adventurer here, bring on the adventure music! Bring on they mystery music, the exploring music!

I tried using my own music but it’s not the same. A random playlist doesn’t match the game’s ability to choose the music based on the zone and the situation.

The other issue is with the battle sounds. I don’t want to hear the same simple sound over and over when I’m firing off arrows or a pistol or throwing an axe. When I fire an arrow I need to hear the arrow leaving the quiver and the shaft hitting the nock, the string being pulled back and the arrow leaving the bow. Each time the arrow leaves the bow the sound will be slightly different (within reason of a computing system).

Similarly with a pistol. Each firing needs to sound slightly different. Repetitive firings need to be different each time (again, within reason). When my toon throw’s an axe, it needs to return. I need to hear the sound of the axe handle in a cloth/leather/metal glove as it leaves.

And lastly, the sounds the character makes as the action is performed needs to vary more. If I hear one more “ouch, my leg” I’m going to go crazy. I want to hear 3 or 4 different responses, not “ouch, my leg” over and over.

Sound is it’s own landscape and that landscape in GW2 is paper and line drawings!!!!

FEEDBACK: When I ask my character to perform an action there should be variety in what I see happen as a result. He is a “living being in a living world” after all, I want to see “living being” actions, which means variety.

If you want to keep the 5/10 button player control architecture, fine. If you’re going to do that I want some variety in what I see my character doing. I mean I’m mostly battling stuff in the game, my characters battle actions need to have some variety and complexity. When throwing an axe, just as with the sound, there needs to be some variety in how I see the character throwing the axe. Four or five different throw visuals for each individual command. Give my character some LIFE doggone it!

The non-battle actions are pretty good. I love detail in the body movements when my Norn Ranger goes from a run to a stop. The jumping visuals are pretty good. But the battle visuals both when dealing and receiving damage are just too repetitive. This IS a battle going on here. I don’t mind repetition when I’m running around the countryside because running IS repetitious! However, fighting a battle is not.

When you combine the sound variety with the feedback (character visuals) variety it will add so much more interest to the battles, which is what gets boring for me in this game.

GW2 is like a console game. its appealing for short term enjoyment. It wasnt even designed with MMO gamers in mind first. It was designed to appeal to Console and non MMO gamers to pull those players into the product. Anet admitted to this for a while now back before the game release. Downed concept for example was looked to be compared to FPS which are popular gaming genre for non MMO games.

Downed state has been in RPG games for decades. D&D for instance has always had your character get “downed” at zero HP but not die till you hit -10hp. The only difference is in GW2 you can perform actions when downed.

i really doubt the game will stop being boring when the sounds are slightly different every time you shoot an arrow. the game is boring because the combat is stale and repetitive, there are few skills to customize your play style, and the encounters and enemy ai are generally simplistic.

also, as a side note, i often wonder to myself, why bother killing these mobs? there’s nothing in it for me. they are just in my way and they aren’t challenging, just time-consuming.

That’s exactly how I feel… “why bother killing these mobs”… but they’re going to chase me all over if I don’t…

I wish they had put as much work into other aspects as they did the landscape. I mean there’s not two planks on the boardwalks in Lion’s arch that looks the same. The sounds, character mannerisms and combat mechanics are too repetitive.

I didn’t mention combat mechanics because I felt that would be an immense overhaul of the game. There’s seems to be some greater reasoning why the combat mechanics are the way they are.

And for me the sounds and visuals bring life to the in-game situation….

To me, the reason I get bored often is because the game lacks immersion.

The graphics are immersive, the music is not amazing, but does the job, and there’s good lore around. But the problem is, storytelling has thus far been pretty abysmal. The PS was pretty good but the LS has thus far been just utterly crud in terms of both telling the story and moving the plot forwards.

Ask yourself what is this game about? It’s about fighting. You fight everything, all the time. And that’s the part that’s way underdeveloped and formulaic.

Yep. Either it is a case of spamming AOE until you can move on, or you get wamped with repeated CC and other cheesy mechanics.

Except it don’t have to be. Its just that the mobs do not really make use of the mechanics on offer. They do not dodge, they do not heal, and they rarely employ boons.

Also, unlike most other MMOs you can’t opt for using tanky stats or CC skills to replace dodging (in part because other games do not have dodge, but that is besides the point). Meaning that the PVE experience devolves to a case of DPS&dodge.

There is a balance of sorts in the combat mechanics, but the general mob design simply ignores it. in SPVP there is a real tradeoff between tank and DPS, but no such tradeoff exist in the mob designs. The mobs are both tanky and DPS heavy at the same time.

And when they come in groups, they can also CC lock. Something that is denied the players both as a 1 vs many survival tactic, and a group vs boss option. This because, if we again compare with other games, the CC can only be broken by defensive actions.

In contrast most other MMOs have CC that breaks on damage. Meaning that if i CC a mob and then attack them, the CC drops. This allows me to CC one mob, and attack another, reducing the incoming DPS without tanky stats. But in GW2 the CC is about setting up for a SPVP spike, or escaping. The mechanics are in essence built more like a arcade fighting game than a MMO, where the other player have to actively counter.

^tgats the weird thing. Some mobs do make use of game mechanics. Bandits try to kite you when they shoot and they do evade attacks for example.

The Dredge is probably the best at this in the game. Each ‘class’ has their own role within a group and they do display quite good AI, like knocking you back when you get too near to them.

Why this isn’t the case with the late-game mobs is a mystery to me. When you get into Frostgorge Sound, all the enemies are just completely brainless and just try to overwhelm you with sheer numbers, the same with Orr.

Well ANet admitted at some point that they rushed the Zhaitan fight for lack of time. Suggesting that similarly the end zone mobs were hastily thrown together to produce a “threat”. Heck, on launch a number of Orr events were buggy to put it mildly.

I guess the problem is that pretty much all the music in the game was made by Jeremy Soule, whom I can’t imagine doing anything but classical.

Some metal or even techno will fit the game well in places though, like when Aetherblades turn up.

My reasons are:
1-Skills.make weapons have skill slots like utility.
2- Improve enemy AI.
3-There is no threat in GW2. who we are fighting we should be in war with someone. we most hate the enemy to kill it the enemy must have a reason to kill us.
my example is from GW1 charr vs humans (fighting for land) humans vs stone summet (crossing land).
the story in GW2 is not connected to the zones(except for Orr).
4-No character progression horizontal not vertical NO journey(RPG).
5-RNG in Skills.
6-Lack of Speed buff for Mesmer.

Because your posting the same thing as a few other ppl at nearly the same time?

Realy why must every one make there own thred about every small thing when there are more then one treads?

Any way You must ask your self why do you play video games in the first places? Most humans play games mainly online games for the same reason why ppl watch tv read books lesson to the radio to feel as if they are not alone. Its a sad truth but that just how our world is. So why don’t have ppl to play with? Have you tried finding a guild who has some type of TS? Are you the type who dose not wish to play with any one at all?
It is up to you to put your own meaning to what you do if you just are looking for item spam etc.. your better off not playing an mmorpg. If you want to play with other humans you should play an mmorpg. The big thing about GW2 that set it apart from other mmorpg is the easy of making a group your friends do not need to be a set class to play with you often they do not even need to be a set level or have a set gear.

Maybe this is why the game seems so shallow to me. It has a lot of wonderful concepts, such as instanced nodes and stuff, but just pushing 1-5 and dodging is so boring to me. Playing SWTOR now, and it’s a breath of fresh air. Can’t seem to find the incentive to login to GW2 anymore. It just feels so constrictive.

And yes, for me, GW2 is the most beautiful MMO I’ve played in 20 years. To bad the majority of your view is the dirt around you.

My three biggest gripes are:

1. The game doesn’t feel visceral. There’s not enough weight to the combat and overall system. I don’t feel like I’m in the world of Tyria. I don’t feel like my skills have any solid impact. Enemies don’t feel like a threat, nor do they convey the scary tones they darn well should be doing.

2. The atmosphere is too much like a Disney film. Nothing wrong with some playful themes, but there is something wrong when it’s the driving force for the entire game. Furthermore, why is it that 99.9% of the time I’m in the game, it’s day time? Where did night go off to? Why is night time not lasting long enough? Why is it that some areas of the game don’t even feel like night time to begin with (Frostgorge, for example). Darker themes and a serious take on adult concepts would be much appreciated.

3. The end game. It just blows. Rewards, achievements, collectibles… these ideas are destroying the game play. People don’t band together to play a game, they band together to optimize time so they can get their rewards as fast as possible. This is ridiculous.

1. There not too many way to make the dmg types more complex then this game has you can use your own dmg, dmg from other ppl ability or dmg from the environment i am not sure if there any other way to do it in any other games.

2. Welcome to WoW about 7 years ago? Its some what more cartoon then say FF11 but its a great deal less cartoon then WoW. I guess there could be a lot of blood and lots of “over sex” but other mmorpgs like this have die in a hart beat. Its kind of a good thing to not play hyper violet / over sexed games because then the game is not about these things but about the story.

3. End game is at level 1 you may not think so but you where able to work on level 80 items the sec you start the game. Getting from level 1 to 80 is just an Illinois of progression to make ppl try out new things. At 80 there are a lot of things that only level 80s can do BUT there also a lot of events for non level 80 given life to old zones and old content. Some ppl are like that they try to move as fast as they can with out seeing what they are passing by i guess you never head of “its not about the destination” when you go on a trip but i guess most mmorpg have been trained to only enjoy games once they hit max level and max gear.

please no. nothing else than classical orchestral music. Thats what fits in fantasy game. Look at skyrim, it has the same composer, and the soundtrack is perfect. no need of metal or something. Just a note on the music first.. Most of the core music is from gw1 and fits the areas you would hear it in while playing gw1. Move from charr area to asura and kryta you’ll hear the theme change.
Now to why this is a boring game ..
Well it sux tbh. Like 95% of all new mmorpg’s its designed with 1 priority.. to fit the biggest possible number of people. Including kids. Its in simple terms a commercial product not designed with any intention of beeing ground breaking or intuetive.
It looks nice. It plays nice. Theres a million things to do. So what can be wrong??
The fact that your part is pointless. You have no inpact on anything. The total number of braincells required on your part is Zero .. The PS quests are like.. talk to me.. go here.. kill the incomming mobs.. now walk here (a green arrow lights the area to make extra sure NOTHING can make you fail the task) .. press these 2 buttons.. ok your AWESOME.. HERO of the WORLD….. (Sigh) …
Mobs have 1 skill .. yes 1! They use skills that first interupt you and then incapacitate you 1-3 sec. They gave this skill 50 diffrent names but still.. its just 1 skill over and over. See any major diffrence between launch, mine, throw, charge knockbacks, freeze, stuns and whatever? .. I don’t. I get stopped for 1-3 seconds whatever they call the skill.
Mindless, booring, titious, frustarting, ..
Skills beeing set to weapons and not even allowing a swap of the ultilleties with the weapon swap is reason alone to go elsewhere.. I never wanna use same utilleties for main wep and second. So its spam 5 skills till death. Not to mention you get all skills by the time your lvl 10 so from there its like no more progress.
Scaling down of lvl futher more makes you feel like you never move anywhere. Like you never actually leveld at all.. im still weak at lvl 80… (sigh)..
I miss real mmo’s.. Where you where the center of the story. Where you decided on your story. Where braincells was plus and it took some time to actually build your character up.

A list of why I get bored with GW2:

-No trinity. I don’t like not being able to tank and heal.

-Berserker gear only. Nothing else is viable in PvE.

-Unpolished UI and unpolished game. I’ve run into at least 2,000 bugs by now.. if not more.

-Level Scaling. I can’t one-hit enemies, which in turn, makes me feel a lot less powerful.

-Music. It’s the same for every zone, every city, every area. It gets incredibly boring.

-Cosmetic progression only. I want to get more powerful, not just look good.

-CC overdone. I can’t walk by mobs in this game without being delayed for 15 minutes.

-Living Story sucks. I don’t even know if there is a story here because it jumps around so much. I wouldn’t even care if there was a story because the story doesn’t interest me at all anyway.

-Meaningless world. I can instantly teleport anywhere without having to travel across a ton of maps. In turn, because no events go on in those maps, they might as well not even exist because I never go there anyway. Add mounts and get rid of waypoints or just delete Kessex Hills and all of the other meaningless maps so the game’s size will go down to 5 gb.

-Not enough neutral enemies. I see neutral enemies in the starter zones, but in every other map all enemies are evil. (Some exceptions).

-Cashgrab. It seems like everything in this game is designed to be a cashgrab. “We don’t have more gear designed… oh, except for the cash shop skins that look cool. You can buy those”. “Oh, you want to change the look of your gear but not the stats? Buy some transmutation stones and be happy”. 90% of the cool stuff in this game is available via gemstore, but nowhere else in the game. Sure, you can farm for hours to get it, but who has time for that in a “casual” game?

I understand completely. I know I’m performing blasphemy here by comparing Gw1 and 2 but GW 1 had some of the greatest attention to detail when it came to these problems. 90% of the skills all had their own unique animations and sound effects, every region had its own unique background music (seriously why am I hearing the Kryta theme in Orr? Orr is miserable and depressing and so the music should reflect that). Also, each profession had their unique animations when it came to performing actions and skills. Its the repetitiveness and lack of care and attention to those details in this game that can become boring.

I say that mob stats, abilities and attack speed needs more variance, than what they do now.

99% of mobs seem to use “High HP-High Dmg-Low/Zero Armor”, I can just “stand-spam-DPS”, without using dodge, utilities or elites, if I wear full berserker and DPS build. There’s no danger of dying at all in combat, which makes combat very repetive and boring. This makes the 1/3 of builds, which focus on maximum direct dmg, just to melt everything in 1-3 seconds, even killing mobs before they properly spawn and activate.

While 2/3 of abilities and mechanics are designed for “long duration combat scenarios”, battles which never end in less than a minute, but the amount of PvE content for these mechanics and abilities is just 1%

I wonder why ANet chose not to make full use of GW2 combat mechanics, abandoning the engaging combat system they so advertised.

Although, the new content in Dry Top do offer engaging combat, but I really hope ANet would someday redesign the old content, better soon than at the end of GW2 development cycle…

I’m a casual PvE adventurer, I enjoy combat, adventure and helping, but not farming.
I rarely do PvP or Hard PvE, unless it’s organized.

It’s crazy to me since this Thread is now nearly 1 Year old, but yet nothing or very small things the OP mentioned about the sound has changed in GW2, although there once was this interview with the sound artists from ArenaNet that they’re planning on further enhancing or well, adjusting the GW2 Music all around Tyria better to match the enviroment the Player currently is in, so that there would also be more variety.

Well, I really just hope there will be at some point or time in the life of GW2 an update in this direction, I’d really appreciate and welcome it, since sounds for me, also play a big role in immersion and enjoying an game.
