If you could have any weapon...
Rifles on elementalists! I wanna use the Predator, the legendary rifle, on mine so bad.
Or the Modulator for electricity and stuff, like http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OCmCLmlwcxs&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DOCmCLmlwcxs
Oh, and maces for engineers. Because of the Fixer-Upper exotic mace. It’s a freaking wrench, man!
Everyone needs a little optimism!

If I could, I’d have a rifle, pistols, and daggers on every character regardless of profession. I’d also have 3 weapon swap slots.
Thief with a rifle. Skills similar to shotgun or sniper rifle.
Elementalist with dual torches/focuses. Animations could be similar to glyph casting.
Engineer with mace/hammer. This profession needs some melee weapons.
Guardian with dual scepters. Could use them to cast barriers or waves of energy.
NEW SKILLS/SKINS:
Brawling: Either truly Bare-Handed with nothing in the weapon slot, or using Gauntlets/Knuckles/Claws/Katars with distinct weapon skins, or with Bracers/Bracelets or whatever that would give you a normal weapon stat bonus and a place to attach Sigils, but wouldn’t change the appearance of your character’s fists or your actual Glove equipment. Brawling may animate with Headbutts, Kicks, Tackles, Elbow and Knee strikes, etc, and the specific style may be more elegant or refined for some classes while others are brutal and direct. The Thief #3 skills would treat Brawling weapons in the off hand the way they currently treat nothing at all in that hand. Grapples probably wouldn’t work so well with this animation system, so these would be strike-heavy styles.
Shotguns: Current Engineer Rifle skills would be moved here, while current Warrior Rifle skills would stay on Rifles.
Polearms: Spears, Lances, Halberds, Tridents etc. on land. If it is designed mainly as a Stabbing/Thrusting weapon with a side order of Slashing, this is the place it goes.
Great-Axes: Any two-handed weapon that animates with Swinging and Chopping, so Scythe skins would also go here.
Martial Staves: A Staff that you use to hit guys over the head, rather than as a focus for magical effects. In FFXI the nomenclature was Staves = Magical Focus, Poles = Smacking People, but to avoid confusion with Polearms I’ll stick with Martial Staves for now.
Crossbows: Contrary to popular opinion, widespread use of Crossbows overlapped for quite some time with fairly advanced firearms.
Shuriken: Actually a catch-all for throwing stars, small knives, razor-edged playing cards, poisoned needles, fists full of miscellaneous shrapnel (Engineer style would emphasize this last option), etc.
Whips: Also includes fighting chains and oddball hybrid weapons like the Kusarigama, even if the animation style wouldn’t match at all with historic usage.
BY PROFESSION:
Guardians – Brawling, Polearms, Martial Staves, Shortbows, Longbows and Crossbows.
Warriors – Brawling, Great-Axes, Polearms, Martial Staves, Shotguns, Main and Off-Hand Pistols and Crossbows.
Rangers – Brawling, Rifles, Martial Staves, Shotguns, Whips, Great-Axes, Shuriken, Polearms and Crossbows.
Thieves – Brawling, Rifles, Martial Staves, Shuriken, Whips, Off-Hand Swords and Crossbows.
Engineers – Brawling, Maces, Hammers, Shuriken and Rifles. The extra resources left by the lower overall selection would go into custom skins for Kits.
Necromancers – Brawling, Polearms, Main and Off-Hand Pistols, Whips, Martial Staves, Off-Hand Axes and Great-Axes.
Mesmers – Brawling, Off-Hand Pistols, Shuriken, Rifles, Shortbows, Whips, Polearms, Martial Staves.
Elementalists – Brawling, Main and Off-Hand Swords, Off-Hand Torches, Martial Staves, Main and Off-Hand Pistols, Polearms and Spears (the Underwater kind).
FINAL THOUGHTS
Several of these would be handled just as well as Alternate Weapon Skills for the same weapons, such as the Rifle/Shotgun split (so the Engineers with the Predator don’t get shafted out of the skin), the nebulous difference between Polearms and Greataxes (depending on how you wield your Halberd), and the Martial and Magical applications of Staves. But then the burden is on the player to find a skin that looks good with the skills they’re using, like if they’re doing all the stabby Polearm skills using a giant double-bladed battle axe.

You forgot rifles for elementalists. Because you listed a LOT of close/mid weapons. And because magical gunners are AWESOME.
Everyone needs a little optimism!
Greatsword or sword for my necro.
Nec/Rngr (GW1)
Bow for the necro!
Would maybe make nec my fav class again like then. Competition for my d/d bow stealth thief at least.
If it could happen
I’d like casters with shields, so shields for light classes.
Dual Torches would be sweet for every class.
Dual Shields " " " " " "
Rifle on thieves and rangers.
Melee weps for engies.
Dual axes for every class.
Pistols on warriors.
Dual daggers for ranger and warriors.
Longbows for everyone.
Focus main hand weapons w/possible dual wield.
New weapons:
Fans (I guess you could make these into either a dagger skin or a focus skin)
Tomes (similar to guardian elites, but for all magic users) Necros get book of the dead =)
Whips or Flails or Chain Swords
Psy gauntlets ( could maybe make these a dagger skin) think psylocke from x-men.
On land spears/pole arms (I would add lancers, but without mounts…wouldn’t make much sense)
Melee staves.
Sword, greatsword and hammer on necro (add some spectral armor effects in the skills/finishers and you have a death night).
All weapons on thief (less stealth, more hard hitting evasive skirmisher style). Also dual sword thieves.
Sword eles. I want to be Gandalf. One of the skills has to be labelled ‘shall not pass’
Rifle on ranger.
Crossbows on everyone.
Dagger Mesmer. Fewer illusions, more mobility. (Mesmer really need some mobility options).
Scythes. Melee weapon on Necros and Guardians. :B
Hammer eles… nuff said
Is currently emotionally unstable because Breaking Bad is over

And rifles.
On another note, if both do actually get implemented, we should have a “friendly” duel.

Bat’leth on anything.
Bat’leth on anything.
In that case, this one gets my vote.
Everyone needs a little optimism!
Elementalist would get great sword and a torch, and the fire particle effect on the torch changes to mist/lightning/dust effect for water/air/earth attunements. Elementalist could have two weapon sets, and assign each attunement to one Of them out of combat. Water attunement may also be assigned the trident for use on land. Ele can jump to the next available attunement using the weapon swap key.
Engineer gets torch and dagger for offhand, and gets a second offhand slot for swap when using pistol/X (as a bonus cosmetic, using the rifle, engine can put a shield in the bonus offhand slot to wear on his back for cosmetic purposes.
Theif gets staff an uses it as a quarterstaff for melee with magical effects. Thief gets a third swap slot which can only hold a two-handed (sb or staff) and can jump through the three sets with wep-swap or use f2, f3, f4 to swap, similar to Ele attunement.
Necro gets great sword, sword and hammer

BIG HEAP OF STUFF

I’m not opposed to Rifles for Elementalists, but they don’t seem like an obvious fit either. All the “Magical Gunner” disciplines I’ve encountered in fantasy have used handguns… at least all the ones that spring to mind.
Also, I see no reason why ANY of the Elementalist choices I listed couldn’t be used as a focus for longer reach than the actual swing of the weapon, like Mesmer Greatswords or Necromancer Axes.
Edit: Except, obviously, Martial Staves, whose whole point is to present a contrast to Magical Staves.

Hmmm. Good point. But I’m still not budging on rifles. You said it yourself, handguns have been done before. Why not rifles?
In fact, if you havn’t yet, go play Borderlands 2. So many examples of elemental weapons done perfectly.
Everyone needs a little optimism!
Longbow on Guardian. They have a spirit weapon bow, and how many times have we seen arrows of light.
I would like to see the spear being used on land.
I also want a bo staff, or just have the staff being used in melee combat. Seems like a good fit for rangers and mesmers.
Warriors shouldn’t get anything
A great big shiny head chopping two handed great axe.
I am an engineer, and I want a hammer.
Spears and polearms for sure. Crossbows as a slow but heavy damage alternative to bows (though it wouldn’t make sense since they already have pistols and rifles in Tyria).
A whip.

Scepter for Warrior.
Whip for Mesmer.
In general: Katars, Crossbow, Flail, Staff (bo staff), Rings (think Tira from Soul Calibur lol)
big big guns for warriors or engineer!

As a Ranger, Dual Wield Rapiers.
Or any proper duel wield weapons, katana’s, sabres, cutlass’s even single handed sword.

Dual swords for my necromancer, burst based, then I could finally settle in with a class I actually like.
