Back at launch me and a bunch of friends made a guild, now 2 years later nearly everyone has gone inactive including the guild leader who has not been on for over a year. I really like the guild and have invested quite abit into it and tried occasionally to bring it back, but without a guild leader it’s not really possible to do. Is there an official way of replacing an inactive guild leader in this situation?

Nope. Sorry, but you’ll have to reform a new guild. This happened to a guild I was in within the first year of the game. GM went silent, off the grid, no word. Had to reform, lost 1,000’s of Influence and days worth of trained perks and unlocks.

It won’t do any good. Unless the guild leader comes back at least long enough to change leadership the OP is out of luck.

Anet has stated in the past that they do not get involved in guild issues and cannot change or replace guild leaders.

Don’t understand why they do not handle this the same way they did in the first game. If the leader does not log in for an extended period of time, leadership would automatically be transferred to the most active person in the guild. At least, I think it was the most active. It might be the next highest ranked active person. Or it could just be the first person to log in after the leader has been absent from the game for the determined amount of time.

Eh, either way, it does it automatically.

Do any of the remaining guild members have a way to contact the guild leader outside of the game?

If so you could ask them to log in long enough to transfer leadership to someone else. it would take 5 minutes max and let you keep using the guild.

Well, if the leader has not logged in in a year, it will take a lot longer than 5 minutes. That’s a lot of updates to download. And if their internet connection sucks, that could be a long download.

You could always do a guild merge of the remaining actives with one which fits your ethos…

You are going to have to build a new guild bro. Or else merge with an existing one.

Surely, someone knows the guild leader on Steam or Instagram or whatever it is you kids use these days. But seriously, just ask anyone else who is still in the guild or was in the guild, if they know how to contact him.

That is why you should always have a leader backup, someone with a rank that has all permissions. If a leader starts disappearing for longer and longer times, appoint a second “backup”, so that there are always at least two active people able to manage the guild.

If you didn’t do that, however, then your only chance is to contact the leader in RL and ask him to log in at least once, and promote someone else. Anet will not do anything – they consider it a purely internal affair.

Actions, not words.

In GW1 they have a system where if the guild leader is inactive for about six months, or so, then it will pass down leadership to the nearest active officer.

In FFXIV if the leader isn’t on for 90+ Days, they get demoted to the lowest rank and the leader is automatically passed to the next highest rank. GW2 should probably think about doing the same.

90 days is pretty harsh, but yeah.

Considering FFXIV allows you to have a PS4, PS3, PC on the same account (Have to buy each platform separate then attach it via code input to your main account), with Remote play option via PSVita for PS4/PS3… you can easily just login to any of those for a minute and it resets the countdown.
