Increase of grind. Lack of new content.
Playing devil’s advocate again.
It’s not about doing them, it’s about the amount of doing them. It’s doing them past the point where it’s fun for them and more “gotta do it again or else…”
And it’s a case of a lot of people having different thresholds for how they feel about repeating things. For instance, I enjoy repeating certain events over again because they’re fun for me to do. And some other events I simply DO NOT enjoy and feel more like chores.
(Solo doing the water pump event chain, because nobody else does, for instance. JUST to shut up the NPCs complaining about the water.)
Devil’s advocate? Oh no. My opinion is very firmly in the “Ascended is not only not required, but it’s not that hard to get”.
Regular mats can be obtained many ways. The first way being regular old mob killing. But you also can get them from exploring maps, laurel crafting bags, dungeons, WvW, gathering, or simply using gold. Heck, just being able to buy the regular mats opens more doors. Instead of aiming for getting the mats off mobs, you can focus on getting gold instead.
How about the ascended mats then? Dragonite ore. World bosses, Karka and the temples. You can also get them in WvW, though I understand not as easily. There’s also guild missions. And lastly scarlet minions, even if failed. Bloodstone dust. Champion loot bags. So world bosses, champ trains, dungeons. Empyreal fragments. Any open world chests, including JP and min-dungeons. guild missions, fractals, WvW, and exp dungeons.
So I’m confused as to how exactly they are a grind when there are so many ways to get them. Unless you hate exploring, dungeons, WvW, JPs, world events/bosses, champions.
Are you going to get everything you need in one day? No, and you’re not supposed to. Is a month a long time to finish a full set of BiS gear, while still being able to do all content (besides what, 50+ fractals?), a long time?
That being said, I don’t think implementing other methods of getting them is a bad idea. I just don’t think the current way is a long, arduous task. Ascended didn’t suddenly turn GW into a Korean, treadmill grinder. I have played those, and having only certain groups of mobs to kill in order to level is a grind. Having multiple ways to get various mats isn’t.
Also, sorry. I type a lot sometimes.
yes gold is a way to obtain it, but what new interesting means of gold earning has the game added? How many ways of obtaing gold effeciently arent a grind?
The main point of the OP is that ascended is simply adding grind without adding content, its actually pretty accurate. In fact it tends to lower content by encouraging you to play in either the best material gathering way, or the best gold gathering way,
Essentially they are adding the carrot, without using it to lead you to the new interesting content. new shinies for doing the same things you have done 1000s of times is the problem.
Yeah I caught this, but don’t quite agree with it. Not everyone does dailies, or wants to have to do dailies every day (have you not seen the gripes about this recently?)
The gripes have been going ever since the game started, first how there wasn’t any reason to do them short of the points . . . then after they dropped a Jug of Karma in the rewards, how it was now suddenly required to do anything.
It’s why I said Living Story as another thought – if you’re going to add something to entice people towards doing your content, let them pick and choose which they want to do. Dailies are incredibly flexible and can be done relatively quickly, fitting into the 4-5 hour a week window a lot of people have been bringing up.
We don’t need yet another currency, so that would kill your token exchange. (People have had a lot of gripes about the number of currencies we currently have since… well forever).
And I repeat the same thing to those gripes from long ago: did they not play GW1 with the VAST amount of trophy tokens going on? We have LESS in GW2.
My thought just uses the currencies we already have. Badges in WvW, dungeon tokens, karma, etc. Then people can simply play and not have to worry if they’ve done their daily, or their monthly, or whatever special thing they need to get the new currency.
I’d rather it not be something people can farm incredible amounts of and get in a week, to prevent people from complaining they’re forced to grind to keep up with the joneses. That’s what Laurels seemed driven to – everyone gets a Laurel a day in exchange for 1-3hrs of devotion. Nobody is getting things faster than that with the all-weekend no-sleep feeding-tube grind session.
Yeah, I don’t think there’s really anything that they can do that someone won’t gripe about.
I had thought about a token reward for the living story stuff, but I foresaw 2 loud complaints on here: a new currency, and LS involvement. It would probably also require some new development, which would take longer to implement in theory. Still it’s an option I suppose. I do the living story stuff normally.
I played GW1 but I don’t recall having that many currencies. I mean, sure, all the various trophy drops could generally be used at some vendor somewhere, but I don’t think the majority of people really bothered with that. It was all just garbage to them unless they were after something extremely specific… Generally speaking I think most people just worried about gold and ecto.
I can agree with not wanting people to be able to grind it out in a week, which for people that do tons and tons of WvW or dungeons probably could. Which was why I suggested making it expensive. When it comes to dungeon tokens, they could also set it up that a player had to buy the armor box, which would require all of the same dungeon token for the set. Rather than being able to buy the armor piecemeal like we can with exotics. Then you could set the price of the box to like 25k tokens. I guess you could potentially run a single dungeon enough to get that in one week, and I guess if they do, well more power to them.
In all honesty it doesn’t really matter how it’s implemented. There will still be the complaint of having to ‘grind to keep up with the joneses’ as you put it. Sadly, there really isn’t any way around that.

just a word…no. more money..more tokens…just more grind. definitely no.
i think this: want to make ascended so grindy?
ok. just make not people need them for endgame.
increase exotic stats and leave them just for skins or combat animations or a title or…boh.
in wvw and pve everybody would so be on a par.
and: end of a major part of the complaints on this forum.
too easy? (too little money from gems i think.)

Didn’t say anything about more grind, just sending it off differently. If you want to. I mean, really I’d just advocate people not bothering. But they’re not going to because they don’t want to be sub-par, so . . . I try to find a different way in theory.
It’s better than total RNG drop and nothing else. No. Let’s do that never again. Ever.

Ascended gear still makes every thing better.
well….it’s should more sound like "ascended things are “Better is Slot”.
while everything else (whole game experience) gets worse xD

You know, I’m going to quote you out of context on that for months now
By the way? Exotic weapon or Ascended weapon, still lose to excellent thieves and warriors. I don’t think it really matters what they were wearing when I spend almost all my time unable to see my target, or laying on the ground from knockdown / launches.

But having ascended gear as a thief or warrior makes the kill go oh so much faster.

You mean instead of finding myself getting OHKOd they can do it even faster? Awesome, how does that work? I die before they attack?

You must not be running a bunker build.
I fully agree with the OP, if you realize that making thousands of gold in daily dungeons just to shell them out for new visuals to wear in the — same dungeons — is getting kind of old. I’ve made full 500 profs, legendaries, emperor title (just out of boredom and lack of stuff to buy) — and i did it all re-running the same dungeon content I love.
But there is a limit to that, believe me. I hit it months ago. Need a huge patch, very soon. Even if they release one new dungeon it won’t be enough. Let alone a slew of casual meta cheeves.
You mean instead of finding myself getting OHKOd they can do it even faster? Awesome, how does that work? I die before they attack?

Not in the least. I run something I enjoy, with a few tweaks here and there. But I prefer being “Tobias Trueflight” instead of “cookie_cutter_ranger_o6”.

Welcome to Guild Wars 2. Where build diversity is not really encouraged. Please enjoy your stay.

This game is dead, nothing new since last time I logged in. The ride was fun at the beginning but now I think I prefer poking my eyeballs with a rusty fork rather than farming another cosmetic.

You don’t even farm cosmetics anymore. All of the good ones are in the gemshop!

I share pretty much the same feelings as you do haha. The only reason I really play now is because of my guild/friends.
This. It’s always the people that keep me going – without a bunch of friends and a guild to spam to, I probably would have quit this game before completing my Sunrise. It’s my friends that motivate me and keep me going in between new content patches, and they’ve done so sufficiently for me to begin working for Eternity.
Trust me, after over 3000 hours you’re sure to tire of the content and begin playing to chat more than to be productive.
Guilds sure do help. I admit, I may not be around if it weren’t which is why I understand those that can’t find a good guild to have an inferior playing experience.
But I’d like to put something in perspective. I know 3000 hours is an arbitrary number but…
It’s been 498 days since Gw2 came out. 3000/498 = a little more than 6 hours. I’m not sure how one could possibly not exhaust an activity that has 25% of their entire existence devoted to.
I just don’t think it’s a problem that can be solved because at the rate of content consumption, the requirements would be massive and even if people who played more than this had those needs satisfied, then a lot of the more casual gamers would feel left behind.
The only hope is in user created content, like pvp and wvw. But for those that aren’t into that, the only chance is to add things to enhance the player’s ability to express creativity. More skins, colors, and some form of roleplay. (Like housing; my heroes have earned so much slaying evil, and they’re still homeless beyond that lame instance? I should be able to buy another house!) And confining any intresting look to the gem store is not adequate. And even considering them, it’s really so little variety. Why does Medium armor have only a handful of non-trenchcoats?
So basically, the focus needs to change. No more of this 2 week release thing. It just doesn’t work and only fulfills a temporary need to grind. True horizontal progression >> Shallow Vertical Progression.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

WvW was great for the first few months. When every one was still exploring and doing different things. But lack of meaningful changes and the zerg hammer train meta has kill all fun within it any more. That could of extended the life of the game by a huge amount. How ever it seems like it is half-heartly thrown a lack luster update on the sparse occasion that doesn’t really encourage you to keep playing.
As for the 3000 hours. It’s not far off.

i think that if anet does really want to be different in the mmo market should rely on these 2 themes:
roleplaying (more players’ involvement in world events, not just an infinite chain of grind. making the player count in tyria. housing, ambient changes) and customization. (more skills, more weapons, more skins, mounts, etc)
but seems it’s already too late.
the usual farming-grinding is here

Never too late until the servers shut down.
Although I don’t expect some of your “roleplaying” list of improvements – notably “housing” – to make it. The last game I played which actually had housing matter also had serious problems with limited space.
Though the “customization” list seems to be in their minds, given how they tried to put in healing skills. Weapon and armor skins . . . really hope we get more, and almost a given we will.
Mounts? Probably staying right out and won’t be showing up. I honestly don’t know why people keep asking for them.

well, It’s all down to personal taste. i’d love mounts.
and, obviously…
if, and only if, ascended is really the last tier….and the last BiS…and if anet creates more interesting (and viable) ways to craft them, could be interesting to come back into the game.

Don’t think they will revamp the crafting methods, and I think Ascended is the best we will see for now. Unless the next set of areas permanently added to the game are incredibly more difficult, I expect we won’t see anything at all.
If they do “Legendary Armor” it’ll probably be through existing armor being back-worked into “Precursors”. I’d suspect using the named exotic pieces would be that, and the method requiring things crafted at skill 450+ along with some other “Gift” item to transform them. It’ll have the same stats as Ascended but be flexibly able to be changed, as per the weapons.
And the gods willing, it won’t be ugly.

I wish they would stop with the crafting addiction. The crafting system in this game is awful and tedious. I think people should be able to craft the best gear in the game, but I don’t think they should force people to craft for anything. Crafting has been an option in every game I have played till this point, and I’m not thrilled by the fact if I want the best gear I have to waste my time on crafting, which is not why I play.
I find it easier to just not worry about ascended stuff until we get more avenues to actually obtain the gear reliably.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
I think people should be able to craft the best gear also. At the same time I think there should be other means of obtaining it. Again I find myself saying this about Ascended – there really needed to be a long look at how it would be released and how the obtaining methods would be integrated. It was not well-implemented and this could have been better done.
Also, I actually like the crafting system here in comparison to the previous game (“Let’s find an artisan who makes the tier two components I need”) though it still has its share of tedium. Almost every MMO crafting procedure I’ve played around with has had tedium involved if you want to use it for serious work, and even non-MMOs have had that experience with me.
At some point I hope they look at their crafting system and try to figure out something to relieve that tedium. I don’t think it can be, since anything relatively novel is going to devolve into tedium once it is repetitive enough.
The comment on crafting cheerfully lifted from an article from ages ago:
( Link here )
" I’m just not fond of crafting as a system. There are two main reasons for this. First, for most professions you need drops from monsters to craft. In some cases you need A LOT of drops. To the point you have to go murder monsters and grind out materials for a few hours. Only Jeweler can progress without monster drops, but you need gems that randomly generate from harvest nodes. For most of my characters, I’m sitting on a bunch of basic crafting materials (leather, cloth, ore, etc), but I’m missing the bits and pieces from monsters necessary to craft items. "
Pretty much the same for me – crafting is nice as an option. I find it is sometimes . . . rarely . . . a viable option to get geared. More often than not it hasn’t been as useful as just playing and hoping for loot. Really looking forward to seeing a crafting procedure in an MMO which isn’t tedious, is useful, AND makes some kind of sense internal to the world logic.

i think that if anet does really want to be different in the mmo market should rely on these 2 themes:
roleplaying (more players’ involvement in world events, not just an infinite chain of grind. making the player count in tyria. housing, ambient changes) and customization. (more skills, more weapons, more skins, mounts, etc)
but seems it’s already too late.
the usual farming-grinding is hereNever too late until the servers shut down.
I honestly don’t know why people keep asking for them.
well, It’s all down to personal taste. i’d love mounts.
and, obviously…
if, and only if, ascended is really the last tier….and the last BiS…and if anet creates more interesting (and viable) ways to craft them, could be interesting to come back into the game.
xDDon’t think they will revamp the crafting methods, and I think Ascended is the best we will see for now.
Dont’ forget infusion slots. There is an opportunity for Anet to insert grind there by raising the max possible stats for each infusion slot — and they’ll likely do it.
As for Ascended armor precursors, it won’t be the existing named armors:
- People who just have them in their inventory get a huge advantage. People will be upset.
- A lot of those are floating around. Not grindy enough. The whole point of Legendary gear is to make you grind so you stay with the game longer.

preventively, i won’t log again until anet defines its new targets and modus operandi.
i started playing because of manifesto. continued to play because i hoped they would still keep their word.
for now, nothing ensures me they will. no more trust. only facts.
let’s wait and see. more grind? more infusions instead of (or) new armours (that’s the same: new BiS and grind again)? casual players like me will easily find another game.

I’m afraid you’re going to have to find another game. They have said Ascended is the final tier (for the meanwhile) but yet the only “content” they know how to make is to add grind. So they’ve got to use a loophole to the “final tier” statement. That loophole will be infusion slots.
Furthermore, despite all that they’ve said, they actually LOVE grind. It’s the only way they know to keep players in the game.
The easiest conclusion is that they’ll add grind to the infusion slots — it’s 100% clear they’re going to do it for Agony resistance, adding a stat grind is a very small step from that.
Sic transit gloria mundi, I guess.

still don’t understand if you like this grind or not.

maybe all the others are ok with the game…or already quitted ;D
You mean instead of finding myself getting OHKOd they can do it even faster? Awesome, how does that work? I die before they attack?
You must not be running a bunker build.
Build diversity really is rather slim in GW2, but to be honest, there’s always the ‘best’ builds in every game for each piece of activity. Even in TSW with its hundreds of slottable skills and passives, there’s basically the standard fotm builds for everything which if you don’t use, you are playing a sub-optimal character.

Oh I’m definitely not ok with the grind, but by the looks of it there’s no hope of Anet stopping it. It’s the only way they know how to create content that keeps players playing (fun, enjoyable content — what’s that?).
Lots of people here are deluding themselves into thinking that “Ascended will be it — the last bit of stuff to grind and then we’ll start getting quality content.” But there’s no way that’s true. As I said, infusion slot stat grind will almost certainly come next.
As primarily a WvW player, when I reach the point that I feel I can’t keep up with the Joneses on the grind, I’ll quit. It’s already pretty bad in that I’m playing less and less with alts because they are undergeared — so the game is getting more and more stale.

That’s not what my “delusion” is. My “delusion” is they understand exactly how badly they pushed things with Ascended and aren’t in a rush to do any further pushing.
But “never” is a long time, and “will come eventually” is almost a sucker’s bet against. All of eternity is a long time for things to not change, and all it takes is one step telegraphed any number of months/years in the future to get “SEE WE WERE RIGHT! GEAR TREADMILL!” to be plastered everywhere.
So really? I think my attitude is best for this. If it’s not fun, avoid it. Nobody is going to CARE if you don’t play anymore or why . . . especially if you think ANet is out to get you or betray your trust. I mean, if you assume that, why do you care if they know your opinions?

Two things I’d like to point out. They stated they “hope this will be the last tier they introduce.” Not that it will be.
They’ve also mentioned the idea of raising the level cap as a certainty in future. Meaning all your level 80 gear? Worthless.
So they have a few more tricks up their selves for vertical progression grinding than you think.
Of course not that I’m berating them on such. Only if they throw it in like they did with ascended gear: “Here’s a grind and nothing else. Have fun!”
(edited by Azure Prower.8701)
So because of the fact that they revamped Fractals and added Ascended Armor (which had been known for a YEAR before it actually came btw) you can no longer enjoy the content you enjoyed before?
Are you sure you really enjoyed the content before then? Because none of that content have been changed in the slightest with any of those releases (unless you only wanted to do fractals, but they haven’t really seen much change either (other than adding some extra challenge)).
In your post it says “none of that content have been changed in the slightest with any of those releases.” Hello, this is what his problem is. He says it pretty clearly.
He is saying that the content was enjoyable, but it has gotten old and he isn’t really interesting in being forced to grind it even more for ascended gear. He wants new content instead.

I could understand your viewpoint if Exotic gear was like raid gear that you could only obtain once weekly. Exotic gear is hilariously easy to obtain. It shouldn’t take longer than 2-3 days of casual play for any player to build a full exotic set of gear. I don’t really see the issue with increasing the level cap as long as ascended and legendary gear automatically upgrades to the max level.
Assuming that this level cap raise comes with new content, I wouldn’t have an issue with building an upgraded set of exotic gear via large quantities of new content.

Anet said that Legendary [weapons] will always be the best tier.
That’s where they get a lot of people in a verbal loophole.
Here are tiers:
Basic
Fine
Masterwork
Rare
Exotic
Ascended
Legendary <- Best tier
Here are levels:
10
20
30
40
50
60
70
80
90 <- Not a tier
etc.
There’s no guarantee they will scale.
I remember the good old days on GW1 where each time you taught you had done it all a new expansion came out, new classes new content new instances. GW2 now has nothing, it’s a good game up to the point when it ends. I have done the same content over and over so many times that I can do most dungeons with my eyes closed. They are doing a good job with the content they are producing but it’s not enough, even if it is new it feels the same and boring with no reward that is worth my time. I don’t want to bash this game because I have a special place n my heart for the GW franchise but till no new expansion comes out, I won’t be wasting my time.

why do i care if they know my opinions?
i want anet and other players to know my opinion. period.
isnt it a good reason for writing on a game’s forum?
i think you are writing to make others know your opinion. it’s the first purpose of communication.

definitely yes. many of us loved gw2. waited years for it.
it’s hatred and scorn. not only against anet, but also against people who try to silence you or to prove your feelings wrong.
don’t care if anet ignores our opinions. don’t care if it’s probabily a waste of time because nothing will change.
“don’t like it? don’t play it” is redundant. already done.
the same for all of you: like the game? keep playing without trying to convince the others that you like it.

No, the first purpose of communication on the Internet is to feel superior to everyone else. Especially on some forums. Don’t worry, I’m already aware by choosing to stick with the ranger as my main I’m disqualified from the awesome
But my point is more this: if you’re sure you aren’t being considered or listened to, or that the other party is just going to do things regardless of your input, why do you expect your input to have any impact? If you “know” you’re being lied to constantly, why think it’s going to change just because you called them out on it? Why start ultimatums about how it needs to change or else, when you place claims about them not caring about what the players think?
It just boggles me when I see it, here, or RL-side. (“I know these products you sell are crap, even though you tell me how good they are. So sell me something which isn’t crap.”)

I’m not saying that they will someday in the future increase the grind. I’m saying they will start the infusion grind soon — within months and that those holding out for real content are just wasting their time.

Plausible. Especially if they do any work on Fractals to tweak or add new things into it at higher levels. Though I suspect those infusions would be for higher AR values rather than statistics.
Also, don’t Ascended armors lack normal upgrade slots? As a sort of balancing factor against Exotics, where you can use a set of six Superior runes to achieve a large bonus on each piece?

Ascended weapons/armor do have sigil/rune slots and infusion slots.
Anet will definitely increase AR values for the infusion slots when they increase the max fractal level — I believe the original intention of fractals was to have it be a vertical game mode for those who like that, so I accept that (though IMO the whole AR business is stupid and Anet should move the fractals more toward using player chosen gambits — just like the Queen’s Gauntlet — to increase difficulty).
I find it hard to believe Anet won’t pass up the opportunity to increase stats in those slots. My guess: they’ll do it slowly, on the order of a few months per increase. Max stats now is +5 for each slot. Next will be +7, then +10, etc.
Like I said, I’ll keep playing and struggling to keep up with the stat grind until I feel truly disadvantaged in WvW — then I’ll quit.

Really? Crap. I don’t have the armor (and probably won’t) and never really looked at the weapon.

I expect that revision may actually be something which could be considered. Or to say it right “should be considered”. Definitely better than numerically advancing requiring multiple trips through Mossman Country.
I hate that place. I really, really do.

I find it hard to believe they won’t increase either. You know, on an order of “ever ever in the future history of the game”. I just would say it’d be likely timed in concurrence with revamps to Fractals or a significantly challenging other place to fight in where Agony is present.
(Like Isle of Janthir. Or special event Fractals added alongside the basic stuff.)
350g for just the insignias on my ascended armor…. Ouch, said my wallet.
gambits
(quoting parts of threads is difficult on this forum!)
I think implementing gambits for both dungeons and fractals would be a relatively small change that can really positively impact the game.
In lieu of new content, it’d actually be a good substitute — personally, I’d prefer it over the “usual” LS content we’ve been getting. There was some rumors of gambits being datamined a while back but I’m wondering now if that was just the instabilities that showed up in the new fractal patch; if so, that’s a big opportunity to freshen up the game that I think Anet missed.

I’m going to completely agree here. I, for one, am sick and tired of the “Living Story” updates, which are their “consistent content updates” every 2 weeks with mediocre ANYTHING at best with more achievements wrapped into them to try and promote some type of interest. It just gets old. I’m not sure why, but the game has seemingly lost it’s luster from the original Guild Wars, where I could log in every day and not become bored out of my mind with repetitive random events and grinding for items.
The other thing this game really makes me a tad upset by is the sheer lack of creativity when it comes to skills for each profession. Where in the world did this creativity wander off to? I know it’s not the staff – as they were able to create GW1, and that held my interest for YEARS.
Maybe I’m just another QQ’er – but I’m not trying to come off that way. I just don’t understand why they couldn’t implement successful strategies and gameplay mechanics from one game to the next…
@ Tobias – I completely agree with you as well. The opportunity is still here. I am WAITING for them to get on with it. Frankly if they implemented newer, more in-depth skills and world activities I’d still play the crap out of this game….and it’s so pretty.

I’d say “hasn’t seen yet” instead of “missed”. Missed implies the opportunity is past
I’m going to completely agree here. I, for one, am sick and tired of the “Living Story” updates, which are their “consistent content updates” every 2 weeks with mediocre ANYTHING at best with more achievements wrapped into them to try and promote some type of interest. It just gets old. I actually agree with your assessment of the Living Story not quite being good. EXCEPT I really did like the latest duo of updates with the Tower. It may have been lukewarm story-wise but I really enjoyed it.
. . . not so much it’s effect on WvW Season 1.
“Increase of grind. Lack of new content.”
It’s part of Anets’ new manifesto. LOL
This game has the potential, but unless anet puts the work into new permanent content, I can’t see it going much further.
I know they look at the forums, they know people are getting tired of LS and want expansion type content.
