[Interview] Living Story Plans Changing
I…I must find a way to burn down your home instance in PvE for such a scary thought like that.
No harm will come to you, but all those nodes you may have will combust.
:PYou….. you….. !!!!!!
You sir, should be hog tied, have an apple shoved in your mouth, and be left where the giant farmer-eating drake in bloodtide can eat you. :p
Why do you hate Scarlet so much? You do realize that her voice actress is a pony in real life? That alone should keep her as a main character for the life of GW2.
Actually, I don’t hate Scarlet. I find her amusing, and do kind of like her as a character. I don’t like the general plot of villian become ally thing though. It’s just….done far too much. Besides, she’s friggin psycho.
Besides, she’s friggin psycho.
Exactly why we should keep her.
Besides, she’s friggin psycho.
Exactly why we should keep her.
We have enough psychos though. XD

Mmm…. Accurate. My Asura will destroy you! Eeeeeheheheheheeeeeee

But none have the voice of a pony!!!

Yeah the Asura are enough lol
But none have the voice of a pony!!!
But they could .
I vote for flutter shy this time.
#LilithFan#1
We don’t know what their “two big background” projects are either. One could easily be Cantha. And Elona.
FTFY
I have no idea what that stands for…. (go me!)
You’re not the only one, there are more acronyms on this forum alone than anyone could “shake a stick at”. They need to introduce a forum dictionary and acronym list for dummies…
Besides, she’s friggin psycho.

How does one like this post x 100???
But none have the voice of a pony!!!
So what you’re saying is Felicia Day has to voice a pony.
I’d be fine with this.

Hehehe
The only thing I would dislike is if that voice actress tried to switch the voice to pinkie pie’s (as they are the same) this would make me wish for the character’s fiery death.
So what you’re saying is Felicia Day has to voice a pony.
I’d be fine with this.
Splendid idea.

How very disturbing….
What next the desire for flutter pony wings, and an instance of Dream Valley?
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Excited!
Looks like some good stuff coming. I’m stoked, can’t wait. I’m ready for something good.
This sentence does get me a little excited. What is going to change? o_O
Kessex Hills will get another make-over.
tldr: expansion in summer
I’m honestly baffled at how you equated that to expansion.
“We’re going to provide that experience and have this huge feature build that has a whole lot of gameplay-changing elements, a lot of quality of life improvements, a lot of features bundled together into one big patch. And that’ll come some time not too far after Season One completes.”
I think you’re extrapolating the definition of “feature” a bit too far given what’s described. Example: Making WvW rank points account bound is a “feature”. If you combine 100 of those, it’s still not an expansion — it’s just a lot of changes to game mechanics (and probably good changes, but that’s not the point).
I read that LS wasn’t going away, just being separated from game mechanics (i.e. features).
Angel and the rest of the writing team admitted to this being a learning process.
I’m willing to cut some slack, but leave Scarlet out of Season two please!
It’s akin to Sylar in Heroes showing up after he died (sorta) in Season One’s end.
Season Two rolls around and yet there he is!
His story was over!
Back to GW2 I hope her story is over! Yes she tumbled some anthills, messed stuff up, and tried to play Shadows from Bablyon 5. I get it she had plans!
To be fair, Sylar was the best character in the whole series and was incredibly interesting. He had this Vegeta vibe to him that make him easy to relate to even though he was a “bad guy”. Scarlet is nowhere close to that developed.
I’ll up it a bit more — if it was an expansion, why not just call it such? ANet went so far as to explain what’s going to happen in Q1/Q2 2014, yet they didn’t use the word “expansion”.

Because they have no idea what they’re doing yet and don’t want to confirm anything they might have to back out of later.

Probably avoiding the use of any type of ‘typical’ terminology because people make assumptions and then convince themselves that those assumptions where in fact promises. All in the hopes of avoiding the kitten storm that their player base tends to kick up (pretty regularly).

I think this whole thread is based on a huuuuge assumption ;p

He was interesting, no dispute there.
Scarlet would get crushed in competition.
I just get rather miffed that sometimes writers just don’t know how to let go of a character.
It reminds me of GM NPCs at a gaming table.

Wow, just wow. I can’t wait for that spring/summer big patch!
At last, Devs listen! Thank you, Arena Net, thank you!

There is going to be a permanent boss. That’s probably what they mean by Tyria never being the same. They tend to hype these things up pretty hard.
lol yes tyria will never being the same we just found out that the jungle wurm have a twin brother on a beach i think this thing with living story is just a waste of everything if u ask me what i learned so far from living story hell nothing connects with anything and tyria will still stay the same if you return after 1 year everything is still and look the same .
Really? Like one year ago Southsun cove looked like it does today? Nope because the refugees hadnt yet build 1/2 of what infrastructure there is there today. One year ago Kessex hills look like it does right now? nope nightmare alliance hadnt build the tower and corrupted the area yet. One year ago did cragstead look like it does today? ehh there was no cragstead one year ago! One year ago did the whole of tyria look the same? nope no way to come across a clockwork invasion and there were no probe thingies everywhere.
Thats the obvious stuff, you also have the hidden aetherblade retreat, the new events that were added, the mini dungeons, the new areas for the mini games, the new fractals, the new pvp maps, the wvw revamp, the new areas for the guild missions, the new fractals, the change to one of TA’s paths, the revamped Tequalt, The changes to the great chasm in divinity’s reach, the gnawl refugees in LA, the changes to Orr.
And thats just the visible changes to the world never mind all the game play and quality of life changes like the wallet, LFG tool etc..
Yeahhhh… no … someone who played 1 year ago and came back provided they payed attention the world didnt remain the same for them at all!
i think you just jump the horses to much this are just small changes to tyria ‘’ you know Tyria the huge map ’’ that a new player will never notice i didn’t even bother to read all your story we don’t talk about ui changes ,dungeons and revamps .
And everything what they say in interviews is just * is only on paper empty words many things what they said are still not in game like a housing system that ppl ask for so long and many many other things.
small changes? kessex hills is like a whole zone changed, 1/25 of the game. Southsun cove had like whole new towns and small outposts built during the secrets of southsun cove LS. Cragstead a whole town instance that wasnt there before and went through 2 different changes since it was put in game. (first burned to the ground by the molten alliance and then rebuilt by the refugees after moving there when they finally managed to get free of the consortium) .
If all I had mentioned were the geological changes that happened because of the motlen alliance experiments (which i didnt even mention at all) you’d have a point that the change were too small to see but each of these was a pretty big thing!
What kind of scale are you expecting for a change to register with players? I hope you’re not just expecting global scale cataclysmic events every update!
Sure, its an interview about what the future holds so obviously you’re right at this point in time it still words on paper and sure there are things that players want that arent in game yet. Hey I am one of those that are really eager for player housing. That being said plenty of stuff that players asked for that made it in game do those things not count at all?
I found the interviewer difficult because he mixes his own thoughts into the ANet comments interchangeably as if ANet said both — see how he slipped the “And the other thing, people ignore” onto the end of this paragraph:
“It’s very distracting to players,” observed Johanson. “It’s almost a muddled message, where we put these releases out and we want them to be excited about the story, to follow the story, and we also want them to be excited about the features that are coming with it. And either one or the other tends to be the thing that people cling onto.” And the other thing, people ignore.
I found this paragraph very difficult to swallow. I’ve never “clung” onto the features. Changes to game mechanics are not something that people come back and “actively” play. They simply become a part of the total experience… the “norm” that is GW2.
The reason LS is distracting to players it that it’s a big story spread out over a long duration. If you miss a step, it’s like you skipped a chapter in a book. On top of that, it’s like reading a small chapter every two weeks.
It’s true that when delivered as a single “expansion”, Players will blow through it in a matter of days. However they see the full story and experience the full story in that time frame. If you take a story that you can complete in days and spread it out over 14 months (their metric, not mine) then it’s too hard to comprehend by the end.
“Tyria really won’t be the same after it, and what happens at the end will also set up Season Two.”
This sentence does get me a little excited. What is going to change? o_O
We find out Scarlet is Trahearne .
“Laces OUT!!!”
I’ll up it a bit more — if it was an expansion, why not just call it such? ANet went so far as to explain what’s going to happen in Q1/Q2 2014, yet they didn’t use the word “expansion”.

There is that but also more. Thing is keep in mind unlike other MMOs content doesnt expire in Gw2. Not just that but a lot of stuff is more fun when tackled in a group. That creates a few problems here as well. When your content doesnt expire (IE no matter what level you can still decide to go hang out in a low level zone) you have to be careful about fracturing the community. If they decide to go the paid expansion route they’ll be fracturing the community. Those who decide not to buy the expansion and players can do that easier then in other games because they’ll still have content to play and continue progressing will not be part of the player pool that can play in the expansion content.
That will also make it harder for them to create new content. If 2m are in the base game and 1m are in the expansion where do they put the new content they design? if they put in the expansion area then they’ll alienate the majority of their players. If they put it in the base game then they alienate people who actually put in money.
What makes Gw2 great is also a weakness here. Its great that we finally have an MMO where things happen all over the world not just the current higher level zones or main hubs. That same thing makes fracturing the community tricky. If they decide to make a paid expansion rather then rolling out the content to everyone it will limit their freedom and potentially create issues.
Could be nice, but this game is practically a mausoleum for dead promises. We’ll have to wait and see if they actually follow through.
Comparing to Game of Thrones? Very ambitious, but let’s see how Season 2 goes before assuming such things.
The big patch idea I like, hopefully some of that Quality of Life stuff will be housing related.
I’m sure if Scarlet ended up like the folks @ The Red Wedding, people in GW2 would take that over an expansion ;p
I’m going to roll with the idea that Scarlet becomes our ally at the end of this arc. That way, she’ll ALWAYS be a part of every Living Story going forward.
That would be awesome! I can see it now… We free scarlet from the corruption of the dragons evil plot to destroy tyria and become her sidekick! Then scarlet and treeherguy fall in love and we follow and support them as they save the world from mysticism and tyranny! Maybe she will get a cool sword too and they can morph together to battle titanic monsters while we watch! Then during each of their celebrations, we could play the role of fun box and firework manager so we can make sure everyone celebrates their accomplishments in style! Perhaps we will earn another pact token as well! So excited!!!
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.

You lost me because virtually all of the LS expired. You cannot go back and “relive” those events (as I said earlier, it’s like skipping chapters in a book if you missed it). Most MMOs have new content that never expires. You play it when you want. Granted it becomes a ghost town eventually but that’s because everyone has played it. In addition, new players can still enjoy the story that was engineered years ago.
“When [Living World Season One] ends [on 4th March], we’re going to take a break for a little bit and then we’re going to do one really big feature patch that is more akin to what people see from some of our [MMO] competitors,” said Johanson, "where they bundle a lot of features together into a really big patch every now and then.
“We’re going to provide that experience and have this huge feature build that has a whole lot of gameplay-changing elements, a lot of quality of life improvements, a lot of features bundled together into one big patch. And that’ll come some time not too far after Season One completes.”
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot
(yeah I’m being optimistic)
I’ll up it a bit more — if it was an expansion, why not just call it such? ANet went so far as to explain what’s going to happen in Q1/Q2 2014, yet they didn’t use the word “expansion”.
Not only did they not use the word “expansion”, they gave the same vague, ambiguous answer in response to the issue of expansions they gave us over a year ago…“big project in the background”. If this “big project” were an expansion, we’d have heard something about it by now. But we haven’t. Because there isn’t going to be one anytime soon. That whole interview was just an exercise in marketing.

Thats not what I meant by content never expires. I meant that the game doesnt funnel people to the most recent zone by making content meaningless once consumed.
Like you said most MMOs are a linear journey. You start from level 1 to max level then you repeat stuff at max level to gain a certain reward. once thats done, Its over you either move to the expansion or essentially stop playing. Once you finish a zone you’re not going to go play back there unless you start an alt and you will not start an alt just to play that zone because well it isnt practical since it might take months to level enough to get to that zone only to finish all the content and end up back to square one after 1 week.
In Gw2 it isnt like that. Not only every zone is a viable place to play no matter what level but the LS keeps the whole world actually relevant. If something happens in Kessex hills then nearly everyone will go revisit there.
Now yes you’re 100% right a big chunk of the living story does indeed expire once its time passes but that doesnt make the zone where that took place irrelevant. There is no LS going on in Kessex hills / Diessa / Wayfarer any more yet the content there is still playable and people still play there.
If they introduce a new goal say ascended armor I can happily work towards it by spending my time in Queensdale if so I decide. In other MMO it would generally mean doing content in the max level zone. Its a crucial difference in my opinion.
In short your typical MMO forces you to get the expansion by actually making sure content finishes. Using WoW as a random example though same is true for most MMOs. If I decide to play WoW without buying a single expansion I cannot play indefinitely at some point I will run out of stuff to do. I can still play but I will stop getting rewards even though they keep adding new stuff to the game unless I buy an expansion. Not so in Gw2 unless they decide to change their current design of course which would be a pity.

Don’t forget the lighthouse in LA that got destroyed!
I didnt because that happened over a year ago !
didnt even mention that there was no southsun at launch or that the lion arch statue got destroyed and rebuilt… ohhh yeah but if they stopped one year ago they remember the statue destroyed so there another change statue is back
I’m so happy they spent time and money on that. That’s great content, that statue.
Does it always feel like the patch you want is 6 months out?
Then come to find out when you hit that patch it was nothing you wanted it to be.
I am just getting frustrated with all these great plans that never come to fruition.
| 80 (Mesmer) Brook Envision | 80 (Thief) Kuro Rin |
I don’t see the difference between a patch that is released all at once, and a dozen patches a year that release the exact same thing, but, I guess people will always find something to be angry about.
1. “The thing that we haven’t decided yet,” he went on, “is what form that type of content will take. Is it right for Guild Wars 2 for that kind of boxed expansion? Is it right for that to be something we add, live, through storylines in the game? Is that something we want to sell through our in-game store? There are a lot of different options available to us.”
That is utterly pathetic if they choose to release content through the gem-store. As it stands, I would not pay even a couple of dollars for that content. Not to be rude, but it’s just how I feel.
2. "By its conclusion, Season One will have been developing for 15 months. What ArenaNet wanted to create was a complex plot that kept people theorising and speculating in the same way a show like A Game of Thrones (and the book series A Song of Fire and Ice beyond that) does – to have “people realise what the power of having a video game that can tell a story like a television show is”.
The living story has felt like nothing but a jumble of senseless, random events that happen to include Scarlet in all of them. I don’t get how they can even compare the Living Story in GW2 to A Game of Thrones. I would pick A Game of Thrones every. single. time. There might as well be no story at all in GW2. It wouldn’t matter.
3. “Population-wise, we’re doing great,” insisted Johanson. “We’re very happy with where we’re at. Six months ago to now, it’s a very steady, very very healthy population.”
At this point, I can’t even comprehend how he can be saying this. Does he have tunnel vision and is only looking at the top servers? Is he secretly blind and goes off the information that people tell him to say? (Not to be rude, I’m just making a point.) 70% of the servers are empty, (very rough estimate based on personal observations), and people are eternally insisting on server merges because they can never find anyone. It’s like they’re living in a dream world where everything is butterflies, unicorns, and rainbows.
4. Concern: When is Guild Wars 2 going to get serious about eSports?
“It is, slowly. There was the first global championship at PAX last year, ArenaNet now broadcasts a player-versus-player show twice a week, and the prestigious Electronic Sports League has finally picked up Guild Wars 2.”
Oh. Now I know they’re living in a dream world.
Now that I’m done with my rant, there is some good information in here that I’m excited about. Mainly the new events.
“Johanson told me everything that will happen, and the four patches coming early this year – 21st January, 4th February, 18th February and 4th March – will bring about an end to excite even a bystander. Tyria really won’t be the same after it, and what happens at the end will also set up Season Two.”
This excites me, but I would prefer Anet escapes the dream-world before attempting this, as there are many problems that are apparently not considered “problems”. (No offense, but the players obviously have a different view of problems than the company)

Well if companies didnt spend time and money on stuff like decorations all games would end up being is pc and npcs fighting on plain backgrounds. Dont you think that would be really boring?
What sets art and great art apart is attention to detail.
they could just as easily destroyed the statue for the mad king event and had it pop into existance again the moment the event ended.
That would be akin some Tv series in which in one episode the hero gets shot and is crippled really badly, miraculously survives and in the next episode its like nothing ever happened. Sure it works and ton of people enjoy the show none the less
But then you have the other show where each episode builds on what happened previously. For the next few months our hero will need to struggle with what that injury means. Well some people will appreciate this much more.
Not that one show is necessary worst then the other, good chance people who love the first show might think the 2nd moves way too slowly.
This look promising;
“… but we absolutely are going to do sweeping new features that you would traditionally only get in expansions – large regions, content and progression additions to your characters in the form of growth and professions and races. Those are all things that you will see in the lifespan of Guild Wars 2.”
But how much of that is “dream” vs “reality” is yet to be seen.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
I honestly cannot understand why people think its so far fetched for Anet to release now zones / contents / races!
why the skeptism, they’ve said they’re going to do it from day one.
what are people skeptical about? that they dont have the know how? ability? motivation? I just dont get it

When it comes to zones and maps, I want them to take their time.
Last thing we would want is some bare bones outline in the form of some map and they fill it in later.
It seems that 2013 was a learning year for them on a lot of fronts.

The problem is they have a great set and horrible actors, continuing the show analogy.
I will be disappointed if they abandon the two-week release cadence. I hope that’s not what they meant in that article.
I also hope the break between the end of LS Season One and the next update isn’t too long. It’s been a looong Wintersday, and some things need to be reset. But, more than that, it’s been a long wait. For me.
Many things in the article sound promising. I am looking forward to this new year in Tyria.

It’s the same story they have been preaching about forever.
“Nothing is off the table!” “Wait till next year!!” “Wait til you see our next patch!!” “You won’t believe what we have in store for you!!” “We have huge big giant great plans!!”
Words are great and all, but it’s past time to just put the stuff in the game and quit hyping it.

They’ve said they’re going to do a lot of things from day one. As the saying goes, “talk is cheap.” It’s not that they can’t do the things they say they want to do, it’s that they haven’t prioritized doing the things they say they want to do. Their priorities since launch have been the Living Story (designed to get us to keep logging in) and the gem shop (designed to get us to spend money). The allocation of their resources reflect their priority.
I feel bad for ANet in a way because they’re a victim of their own success. They have a history of excellence with GW1 and we fans are rabid about the franchise. So much so that we build up massive hype with anything they say. In addition, there’s so many things to do in GW2 that everyone has their own idea of what’s “great”. So when deliveries do occur it’s a let-down from super-high expectations as you can’t make everyone happy.
I’m hoping for a good GW2 year so I don’t shelve it when the next good thing comes to town.

pretty much this. They are parroting the EXACT SAME phrases that they have been using for over 18 months.
I mean seriously… 18 months into the game and you STILL don’t know how you want to deliver expansion content? Most games have launched an expansion by this time.
And there is always some “huge” feature or “awesome” patch JUST on the horizon… well i’ve been waiting a year and a half and I have yet to see any of this awesome story or huge features. Just a bunch of small QoL stuff.

Well, the last time I believe on what they advertise (a.k.a the Manifesto), I didn’t really received what they said they will do.
Up until now, the bugs that plagues the professions still exist. If they fix the game as fast as they develop the Living Story, it would be nice.
But the inconsistencies in what they said and what they do leaves a huge room for skepticism.
If they say, “it’s ready when it’s ready.”
I say, “it’s B.S. until we see it in game.”
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
To be fair, Sylar was the best character in the whole series and was incredibly interesting. He had this Vegeta vibe to him that make him easy to relate to even though he was a “bad guy”. Scarlet is nowhere close to that developed.
He was interesting, no dispute there.
Scarlet would get crushed in competition.
I just get rather miffed that sometimes writers just don’t know how to let go of a character. It reminds me of GM NPCs at a gaming table.
I don’t know how you can’t like Scarlet…after all, she can do fantastic stunts…with tiny feet, no less.
