Nope. Patches bring people back for a few days and then they’re gone again for the most part. If you want to see people around, Jade Quarry, Blackgate, and Tarnished Coast are the servers you should go to.

Except some of us went through and provided screen shots of la at prime time on some of those servers.

Of course the real test for the OP is to go join one of those servers. See if you like the population. Personally I am with the guy who suggested the top 3. I’ve had to guest to finish several things now.

OP the deciding factor is that you only get two guests per day. Choose a server with at least the population so you can wisely use those.

If you have a choice you can’t go wrong by picking one of the top three. If you ever feel there are too many people (lol right) you can always guest to any of the other servers for a more solo atmosphere. It’s kind of harder to do it in reverse though.

Have you been below a T2 server? It’s a ghost town in LA. Go to GoM or DR or any server below a T2 and stand in LA or anywhere for that matter and count how many people you see in an hour. Then go to anything T2 or above and count. You’ll see the vast difference.

Souces would be appreciated. I doubt there’s close to that many. Maybe during the updates, but as said previously, they drop off 2 – 3 days afterwards.

The problem is that we got a downward spiral on T<2 servers. I don’t think the players are going anywhere but..

1. Large guilds start leaving for T1/2 servers because of WvW.
2.This makes WvW almost unplayable for those that remain because they just get stomped all the time, so more WvWers leave.
3. Everyone else sees an emptying server, and so they leave as well.

Due to TL (Team Legacy) and Ruinous Gaming Community alliance. That’s pretty much 90% of the server since those are some huge communities that have been around for quite some time. Other servers aren’t that lucky that they had a whole alliance made up of thousands of players choosing that server as their home. As such, they are/are already dead.

I think anyone can agree that saying the servers are empty is an over exaggeration. However if you think there are many players there you are wrong. Having guested to nsp myself a few times, I can say you guys have way more population than your tier shows. It’s like night and day compared to many of the servers. Even then compared to any in the top 3 it’s just crazy how many people they have. It’s really fun to play on those servers. There’s always someone around. That would just go back to the “pick one of the top 3”, which was accurate. If you were a new player I would say go there.

The lower servers are losing population. Now that might be people moving to the top tiers, or it might be people just quitting. I suspect it’s a bit of both. If it is then the top is still the best choice because on those it’s a greater cushion against people leaving, and the transfers will be coming to your server instead of leaving.

I don’t really understand. Should I give bad advice to avoid being part of the problem. When giving advice I tend to imagine the person I’m giving it to is a family member. So I try to take certain things into consideration.

First why are they playing an mmo? The only reason I can think of to play an mmo over other games is because of other people playing the game. It’s not because they have more content, or that they have better combat etc.

So if that’s the case then yes I will suggest they play on a server where they have the highest chance of actually encountering other people. Suggesting they play on a lower population server seems entirely counter to the idea behind even giving advice.

If the person was looking for great solo play though I would suggest other games instead. If they wanted to play alone but still enjoyed the fantasy genre I would suggest something like skyrim, or dark souls/demon’s souls. If they wanted a more modern sort of rpg I would say something like gta v. Historical? AC3 is awesome. In my opinion it’s a great game, and I had so much fun playing it. I went through twice, with all of the dlc. It had so much replay to it, the naval missions alone were just fantastic. The story was good. I love that game. Upcoming games? Well I think Destiny is going to be great, and AC4 is something I’ve been looking forward to because I loved AC3 so much. Watchdogs would also be on that list.

I don’t think giving what I consider good advice to be a problem.

This is very true. I haven’t been playing all that long but in the time I have I’ve witnessed a lot of hard work being done in WvW as a member of Dragonbrand. It’s a highly populated server but most people seem to prefer doing dungeons or just hanging out in Lion’s Arch doing kittenall.
I’m not the kind of person who says f_ck it because things get a little challenging so I haven’t left the server. But I couldn’t count on one hand how many times I’ve seen the Outnumbered buff come up in WvW and our zergs are no bigger than 10 people. Every so often, mostly in the mornings, we have some pretty impressive numbers and do very well, but otherwise it amounts to us getting stomped from being vastly outnumbered the majority of the time.

Just a note though; I don’t in any way put blame on ANet for this. I see a lot of people saying it’s their fault for WvW being this way but I believe they’re matching us up correctly. Dragonbrand is a very large server but most of the people don’t bother to WvW, instead they’d rather sit in LA and complain about how we suck. They match us up on potential players not people who actually participate in it.

WvW became this way because of a combination of human nature and this being a MMO.

1. People don’t like losing, so they’ll always join the winning team (server).
2. There’s PvE-related benefits from WvW, and the fact that they just announced a WvW Season with actual loot made things worse. MMO gamers places heavy emphasis on benefits and loot, so they make beeline for the better servers.

Have you been below a T2 server? It’s a ghost town in LA. Go to GoM or DR or any server below a T2 and stand in LA or anywhere for that matter and count how many people you see in an hour. Then go to anything T2 or above and count. You’ll see the vast difference.

A blatant lie. I have always played on a tier 4 server, and that description is a million miles from the truth. LA is permanently teeming with activity (and I’m not American and not playing in US primetime).

Now, GoM, DR, they’re tier 8 servers. Maybe they are deserted wastelands, I don’t know. But if they are, just say so. You’re only embarrassing yourself posting something as obviously false as claiming that “any server below a T2” is like that.

Here’s the problem.

Let’s say you have 8 dungeons, fractals, SPvP, and WvW. That’s a whole lot of people NOT in the open world. You could have 1000 people online on a server, and if 200 of them are in WvW and 300 of them are scattered among the other stuff you’d only have 500.

Then you have stuff like the Fire elemental, the Shadow Behemoth the Shatterer. These are places where people gather.

Most servers, for example, have a Queensdale champ train? Why? No idea, really but they do.

At the end of the day, the world really is a big place. I’m not sure how many people you’d have to have to see people all the time.

Plenty, if you’re truly that interested in seeing for yourself. Actually, you can see for yourself. Guest to Gate of Madness or any other server besides the top 3 and walk around a bit. It’s a ghost-world for everyone that is not on the top 3 servers. Then guest to Tarnished Coast and you will see more people in 2 minutes on TC than you see in 24 hours on a lower-tier server.

It seems like this would be easy to solve though. Maybe let players that choose it goto overflow servers by default. They don’t have to title it overflow, but the technology is already there. That way players that want could essentially play with other people even if they are on one of the less populated servers.

Of course that might also hurt on transfer payments too, so it isn’t likely to happen. I think it’s very similar to the “mega server” that ESO will be using.

I liked the idea that someone suggested (I don’t remember who), with servers only for WvW, but everything else was a single server that spawned overflows.

And the main or first overflow would be no different than the other overflows….sort of the way outposts were handled in GW 1.

There are plenty of people playing the new content…that’s why Anet keeps making more new content. If people didn’t log in to play it…you’d see it go away pretty fast.

First, I never said it was dead. I said some servers were dead, not the game. I’m on a T1 server. When I see 5 people in LA on my server, that’s when I’ll say it’s dead.

Second, I said 2 – 3 days on average after a patch drops, the populations dwindle.

And third, ANet makes the content, but there’s an underlying cause to why. But that’s not the topic of this thread.

I don’t have to try. I’ll take a picture in another week and it’ll look much the same. You don’t personally like the game. You’ve said so. You have something against the game. So you come here to make the game look worse than it is. The old expression is misery loves company.

Plain and simple, you’re filtering your perception through a viewpoint that surely most people must see what you see. I don’t think most people think deeply enough about their gaming experience to make the kinds of distinctions that you do…or that I do for that matter.

The game has lots of traffic a week after new content comes out…which is only week before new content comes out again.

And you’ve said that it’s one of the best MMO’s that you’ve played. So is that what you’re doing as well? Swaying perceptions to fit your view?

I won’t deny that I dislike the game. However I’m not misguiding people into thinking the same. It amuses me to no end that you, of all people, say that’s what I’m doing.

Quite a show if I do say so myself.

Let’s not let this spiral into a squabble. It makes us both look childish. I, for one, will continue what I do, which I believe is alerting the people to what I believe to be reality, and you and your fellows can do what you think you guys do best, whatever you may think it may be.

“Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.”

A couple of screen shots from just this minute

Which is the drop date of a holiday update.

Try harder.

People have posted other pictures from other times. You can’t have it both ways.

No one plays the game…it’s dead…except when new content comes out, which happens very two weeks. So every two weeks the game isn’t dead. Which means the game isn’t dead.

It is exactly what you’re doing. You have no idea if people like or don’t like the game in what numbers, because you can’t. And I can’t either. That’s because of guesting.

Guesting doesn’t really allow anyone to know how many people are playing. If a big percentage of people from other servers have learned to guest to busier servers, then there’s no way to know, really know, how well the game is doing. Anything said by anyone is pure speculation.

Edit: I did say this is the best MMO I’ve ever played…but I also find most MMOs absolutely dreadful. This game is decent, bordering on good…and it could become a lot better as time goes on. In many ways, this game is an unfulfilled potential…but at least I can see that potential. And I can’t with other MMOs.

Thing is all of this is based on perception. 2 – 3 days on average after a patch drops you’ll have most of the server concentrated in the area where the new content is no doubt. Then it starts to dissipate slowly. But not me, not vayne, nor you know what happens to those players. They might not touch the game for the next 10-12 days or they might play one of the 1000s of possible content they might choose to play its impossible to say.

All I know is the game never feels death, ever not at any time of day. Ever time I went to play an activity there were always players, never found myself alone. Everytime I went in WvW there were players. Some mid level zones are nearly empty (I still always see a couple of people around) but that doesnt mean the server is dead. This is not your typical MMO where all max level characters are funneled to the same small amount of content, players could be doing anything playing anywhere.

I am playing on Desolation, one of the top EU servers. I play before work (5 am to 6 am) and after work (6 pm to 9 pm) – not every day, but often.

In the morning Desolation is quite lively. In the evening it is very, very crowded. During the major boss events you always land in overflow (Sparkly Fen, Queensdale, Blazeridge Steppes etc.).

Sometimes I guest on other servers. I look for the ones with medium population because when I guest I do it just because my home server is so crowded. Those servers are ok populated in the evening but nearly empty (including LA) in the morning.

So if you like a lot of company join Desolation. If you can do with medium population every server seems ok for me.

SBI is a good server if you can get onto it, so is Tarnished Coast. Maguuma seems fairly active.

Of course, around 3am to 7am CST all the servers are rather dead that I’ve guested onto

I had last played this a couple months ago and a lot of players had left… Have many returned? Are the worlds full again?

Honest answer = Nope – The places where the achievements are are full, but apart from them, no. If you get in a good guild though it won’t matter.
