Q:

SO, it’s been quite a while since I have last been online for Guild Wars 2, and I remember back in my time which was back in January, I quit and moved on to WoW. The differences are quite obtuse in the amount of farming you have to do and the uniqueness factor a player has. Now, I left GW2 because the newer PVE patches felt sort of boring and grindy to me, it didn’t strike me as something I looked forward to playing the storyline for, I think by the time I left you received the eternal dream or whatever it’s called but was left completely clueless as to what’s going to happen. Also, I never complained about having to kill mobs in Orr ever as a tanky guardian, but when I reached magumma and it took a lot to kill mobs I felt as if GW2 is pushing to wards that grindy appeal. I do in fact notice that I grind less in WoW than I do in GW2, a lot less actually, in fact I don’t ever once feel like I’m grinding for anything anymore in WoW. A huge comparison in lore also drove me away, the lore……is okay, but it lacks that spark that people look for in the story, something along the lines of betrayal, or Giagantic bosses working together to destroy all of Tyria, somehow connected with an evil plot or whatever, no, in Guild Wars 2 everyone is your friend, there’s no rivalry in the lore between the races, there’s not world pvp other than WvW, basically, nobody is your enemy, in fact you don’t actually have any, just a bunch of mindless plants controlled by a dragon. It’s almost as if Mordremoth is just some cat in a cave just doing his job, I feel as if he’s doesn’t even have a reason for killing us, he doesn’t even want to kill us, its just nature doing its job. Furthermore, the lack of raiding and uniqueness(without having to pay), is really lacking! Everybody has Sunrise, twilight, and etc, now and days, everyone looks the same when new things come out, it’s really just starting to get annoying now. Now compared to WoW, in wow, you get gold simply for playing the game, in fact, at some point you won’t even need gold anymore, but still Blizz has made it incredibly easy to make gold; in GW2, I felt like flipping was the best way to make gold and flipping alone, in wow I play the game, and got enough gold for what I needed without having to flip or learn to play the economy, etc. I always felt like you weren’t rewarded enough for doing a dungeon, doing a quest, or simply farming mats. Also in gw2 you have an overflow of mats people don’t want, and an underflow of mats people actually need, its really degrading when you think about it. Also the lack of NEW DUNGEONS, the LACK OF RAIDING/ RAIDING GROUPS, the LACK OF SENSIBLE OBJECTIVE, really takes a lot out of GW2. Being as it is Buy to play, I can accept that some armor styles, you should just buy from the in game shop, but seriously, armor styles aren’t everything, and people like seeing numbers, ie people like to ask: how much dps am I doing compared to this guy? how effective is my build? what does this player have that I don’t(non – achievement wise)?

I am in no way trying to endorse that WoW is better than GW2, I jsut wanted to use it as a tool to compare it to as an MMORPG. Other clones of WoW such as LOTRO, Allods, SWTOR, etc, they all have a significant story to them, and yes all of which are great because of its unique dynamic in plot. The question on the story of Tyria should be based on whether the characters CAPTURE what exactly makes a story FANTASTIC.

Nobody wants to see a psychotic villain without prior exposure as to what made them psychotic in the first place (which is what made Zhaitan interesting in lore, but not much was shown from Zhaitan). For example, all I know from the game was that Zhaitan was once the ruler of the city of Orr, but he became corrupted and wanted powerfor himself, so he used dark magic and unleashed the Undead and yaddy yaddy yadda. BUT, THERE WASN’T A SINGLE MOMENT WHERE WE COULD SEE ANY OF IT UNFOLD. We literally have no idea who Zhaitan is as a person! Was he a good guy, righteous, or mischievous? I don’t know, I am clueless, and all we ever got to see from the demonic kitten was his dragon form which looked awesome, but overall, there is nothing special about Zhaitain’s story line in game.

Also WvW is all about coordination I came from a guild where they had extreme coordination skills, and you either cooperated or were kicked from the guild. It was fun. But the problem with all of it and every other massive raid out there is that there isn’t really a system where more than 5 people can join a group. This is really demoralizing, and bless me I love pvp, but this is what I hated most about pvp in guild wars.

In all fairness, Anet is really trying their best, and Tyria still has a lot left to do out there. Maybe the new expansion will introduce raiding, instead of JUST dungeons, and maybe they can drop ascended gear and stuff like that, maybe the lore will introduce characters that have that booming impact rather than “LETS BE FRIENDS” characters, and hopefully we can learn more about Mordremoth’s past instead of only trying to look for a way to stop him. Maybe a new pvp system where players can challenge each other in Tyria kind of like Tera’s Mercenary system and stuff like that, Maybe Something can happen to one of the major cities that leaves significant impact. Maybe they can bring in new mats , probably include recipes that are dropped from boss chests and stuff like that. Maybe give Trahearne and other characters a more serious appeal where people betray each other. Even class specific armor would be fantastic, and throw in a raid, I guarantee that the player base will spike super high.

WORDS

I’m sorry, i’ll edit this into a real post when my eyes hurt less

Edit: this is a very different game to wow. If you enjoy wow for its mechanics… you probably won’t enjoy gw2. ever. Dungeons seem to be a thing of the past, we’ve had no official word on raids, general consensus is that mounts are not a thing the community wants, gear treadmill or mobile levelcap are both big no-nos, despite some recent unrest i still feel confident in saying that the tank-healer-damage dealer party arrangement will never make an appearance.

with regards to story, the dragons are forces of nature. They are nature doing its thing. Nature on this world wakes up every few thousand years and eats all magic, basically extinguishing life. We don’t want that so we fight it. It’s not a personified enemy, apart from the minions and champions we fight, and scarlet is probably the closest we’ll see to a nefarious villain. If these things don’t appeal, then absolutely, definitely, walk away. You won’t have fun and the community will be the worse for one more bitter member.

White space is your friend. But, in my opinion and for right now? No, it’s not worth coming back unless you have a lot of content you haven’t done. If you’ve completed the majority of the content, you’ll be twiddling your thumbs like the rest of us.

If nothing else, log in and get your daily rewards and the like, but otherwise . . . I’d wait for the expansion to add more carrots to chase.

Gone to Reddit.

Sounds like you already made up your mind. Should change your title to “What I dislike about GW2” or “WoW vs GW2”. Pretty much all you’ve done is compared GW2 to WoW and talked about the things you don’t like about GW2.

Seems like you’re happy with WoW, so stick with it then. Don’t expect WoW in GW2, or else you’ll be disappointed. Two completely different games, so yeah, one won’t be like the other.

See, I’ve played WoW and this and frankly, if WoW were free to play, I don’t think I could stomach it. So is it worth coming back if you like WoW? Probably not. The real thing is to see in the expansion what the challenging content is, which will be announced pretty soon, but at the moment, all the stuff you don’t like is still how the game is.

Fortunately for the game, there are plenty of people who like the way it is. We just need more content.

Sounds like you like WoW better. You like the story better, the amount of gold you make, the type and amount of grind, the dungeons, the villains, the raids, the ingame rewards, the difficulty in fighting mobs. You can log back in and try the game out again, but none of the things you like WoW better for have changed so I doubt you’ll be any happier with it or like it more than when you left.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

No… It’s very boring. If you like running around and exploring the game it at least offers that. However this game has atrocious game mechanics when it comes to fighting. It’s extremely boring to look at the skills you employ.

Focusing on the issues you have with the story.

I am afraid you missed a lot of it as you have quite a few misconceptions in the parts you talk about. The story is not nearly as simple as you seem to think and indeed already contains the elements you ask for.

First of all Zaithan. Zaithan was not the ruler of Orr transformed into a dragon. Zaithan like Modremoth was always an elder dragon.

The ruler of Orr right before its demise was King Reza. His advisor Vizier Khilbron is the one who sunk Orr using a ritual he used in order to try and defeat the invading Charr Army (Charr and humans arent really friends, humans displaced Charr out of their lands in Ascalon only so that later Charr faught and took the land back. At the time of Gw2 Humans and Charr are more in a state of Cease fire and cooperation based on necessity. Its a fragile alliance and these cant be seen better then around the city of Ebonhawke. The city has been center to the Human/Charr conflict and up to today there are still skirmishes from elements of both sides who refuse to recognize the alliance.

“All” Zaithan did when it awoke did was raise Orr from the bottom of the ocean and reanimate all the people that died on Orr when it was destroyed the Vizier’s ritual. It also made it it’s home of course and why wouldnt it. No other place on tyria with some many dead people at the same place probably. Perfect for a dragon who’s sphere of influence is Death.

And then there is the whole sylvari thing. Spoilers for those who didnt play throught S2 of Living story yet

The whole sylvari race has been essentially created by Modremoth as its minions much like the branded are the minions the elder Kralkatorrik uses to cleans the world of the living. During the very end of Season 2 Modremoth turned some the sylvari and they attacked their allies which is how he managed to get down the whole pact fleet so easily. We dont know yet how this is going to play out but Anet did confirm this is going to effect player characters too somehow… which is why I am leveling a few slyvari to level 80 myself to see how this play out from different point of views hopefully.

Think about it, how is that for a evil connecting plot. Modremoth creates sylvari 28 years ago. They’re initial free willed and this genuinely intermingle with other species and get into places of authority etc.. They were an unstoppable force in that no other race could uncover the plot and thus stop their infiltration because no such plot exist.
When needed the trap was sprung and the results were naturally enormous.

Modremoth story is not much different then Zaithan’s only unlike that story we’ve seen it happen step by step. For the first time we lived and played through the lore as it happened.

If you’re genuinely interested in Story it may be worth coming back and give the story a more detailed look. It requires multiple play through with different characters of different races. Personal story has lots of branches and each one is a piece of the puzzle.

The topics’ title & the first post don’t have much in common.
You already made your decision, and it’s clear that you like WoW more.
I personally would invite you back, because I personally enjoy WvW raiding with my guild, doing dungeon / fractal runs with my guild & chilling out in TS with my guild while playing some casual tPvP. I’ve played WoW as well, but several aspects repelled me.
I enjoy what Gw2 has to offer, so I’d recommend it to those that don’t have tried it out already. But since you tried it out, and didn’t liked it, I guess you have your answer already, so no point in trying to convince you how awesome I think it is. Taste is subjective.

To OP I just want to say before you listen to this one you better look at his post history.

But even so it sounds like the game isn’t something for niether you or Davidkevin and don’t force yourselfes to like it. The game is what it is, if you allready own it it won’t cost you much to install it and try for yourself. If you still don’t like it leave it for another while. Just remember that this is GW2 and not WoW or any other game and please don’t try to make it in to any other game, becouse in my case I left other games becouse GW2 was so fantastic for me.
