Should be renamed “Weekly”.

To be fair, those of us who have it already, or are on the cusp, probably play a lot more than the average player. My buddy plays about three hours a night, five nights a week and ain’t anywhere close to finishing.

I’m not saying that it’s necessarily a bad thing that something requires less time to complete. I mean, nobody likes to ‘feel forced’ into doing something over an extended amount of time and considering the value of laurels, I’d say most people feel more than compelled to complete monthly.

I just find it odd that people have been able to complete what is supposed to be a time sink in 5 days. It’s like A-net is trying to create habitual routines in their players by providing daily and monthly incentives, but fail in doing so.

I don’t think the monthly is too hard. I’m really happy to see no fractals or PvP of any sort required.

I will probably take me most of the month to get the dungeons done. I have 2, but I play at odd hours so being online when 4 other guildies are who want to do dungeons will be some scheduling.

My hardest part I think will be the salvaging. I saw someone say buy whites off the TP, but I’m losing even more coin doing that. I salvage anything that I can’t sell to a merchant for say, more than 50c, but coin for me anyway, is extremely hard to come by so far. I just haven’t figured out any way to make money, besides selling gems. That really isn’t an effective in game solution.

If they keep the monthlies like this, with no fractals or PvP required, I look forward to working toward completing them each month. But if they require PvP or fractals in successive months, I’ll be disappointed.

No, it’s not but people complains because they get rewarded for doing something they don’t enjoy. I don’t like grinding so dungeons are everything I don’t want to do in a game, it doesn’t matter if they are really easy (I just did AC for first time ever today and I ended being really good at it).

Grind: repeating content at nauseam to get rewards only possible through this particular piece of content.

Doing five different dungeons doesn’t count as grind. Hell, doing all five paths of Arah wouldn’t even fall under the definition of grind. You can even choose which dungeons to do. No grind necessary at all.
There is no repeating necessary for completing this monthly.

Well I have yet to complete a monthly, mostly cause I do not really care for dungeons and WvWvW but that is my choice. This monthly is probably the closest I will come to completing it. Even with the laurels as an incentive I choose not to complete them. Now if Anet adds the options to only do a subset on them I might reconsider finishing them.

@Phoenix – It has been hinted at that we will have a choice in the future. It will make those of us who simply can’t do or don’t like to do dungeons (or WvW) an option.

@IndigoSundown – Totally agree. I forgot to say in my post that I didn’t find it “hard” at all. It’s just not possible for me to complete.

I’m not sure it is a time sink. It’s rather more like a mechanic to get people to try different things. I think it’s setting the bar low enough that a player playing for a below-average amount of time per month can still get the achievement. This of course means that those who play many hours per day get done “early.”

As a casual player, this is the first monthly since launch that I’ve actually completed. Amazingly, I have it done already. Not having fractals listed or WvW helped me out since I don’t really do much of those things. The hardest thing for me was the dungeons since basically the only dungeons I do are story modes for my personal story, but with only 5 dungeons required, it was doable for me.

This’ll prolly be the only monthly I ever get, though. lol

I have 100% except for dungeons. Exact duplicate of every monthly since they required dungeons. Before I didn’t really care, now it only stings since I’ll miss the laurels.

So far I have had the uninterupted time to run 1 path of 1 dungeon. Yay!
It just won’t be happening for me since I can’t run a full dungeon path. It’s a real shame too because I enjoyed the AC dungeon path with the Lovers immensely. I just can’t be unfair to the guildies or pug group that I join when I have to go AFK. Little and big kids need help at the darndest times.

On the brighter side, I’ve heard that Anet will implement choices in the future.

You don’t have maybe 10 minutes to run Citadel of Flame path 1? Seriously?

Sure I have 10minutes but seeing as how I’ve never been do you really think it will only take 10 minutes?
But thx for the suggestion. If I can get with guildies later this evening I will give it a go (ofc after I watch a video so I’m not a total schmuck inside)
That AC path with the lovers was said to take 30minutes …. it was finished in an hour instead, and for once it wasn’t me that caused the delay. Still when people say “it only takes a few minutes” it isn’t always the full story.
So I was honestly asking, no sarcasm.

This question assumes that the player you are adressing is familiar with and skilled enough to make the run in 10 minutes. It also assumes, since CoF to my knowledge cannot be soloed, that the player’s party for the run are also similarly familiar with and skilled enough to make the 10-minute run. Every time.

Unless you know that all the above variables are in effect at all times, the question is illogical.

Slightly off-topic, but it was mentioned a few times that each fractal counts as a dungeon. That is false. Fractals do not count as dungeons at all. You have to run a dungeon with a story or explorable mode to get credit for that monthly.

That being said, I’ve done most of the monthly without trying. I play about 3-4 hours a night, a lot of which is sitting in Lion’s Arch. I try to finish my daily every day, and get a Fractal run or a dungeon run in (I enjoy this content; I understand others do not). With my policy of salvaging whites and rares, I’ve salvaged 2/5ths of what I need already. As a result of doing the daily, I’ve also gotten a chunk of my monthly events done already as well. I know I’ll get these finished before the end of the month, simply because of the progress I’ve made in 5 days. Aside from the required 5 days to get the “do 5 dailies” achievement, the other requirements can be rushed. I understand some people don’t like doing some of the content, but it honestly doesn’t take that long to run one dungeon path a night for 5 nights throughout the month.

While I enjoy WvW, there were some months in the past where I would not have set foot in it. I enjoy PvE more, and so I usually only step foot in WvW when I’m in the mood or when I have friends going in. However, for I think every monthly since the game’s release (aside from this month’s, obv), I’ve been forced into WvW to acquire 50 kills. This isn’t hard, but its still inconvenient as it takes away from me doing what I want to do. However, I find a way to enjoy it despite the forced requirement. Everyone complaining about dungeons should find a way to do so as well. Take an alt into a story mode they have yet to complete. Find some friends to do the dungeon with. Set challenges for yourself the game doesn’t otherwise set. Find something to make it fun and interesting. I’m sure you’re all creative enough to find some way to enjoy it. If not, don’t do it. For those of you worried about the laurels, you’ll get them in 10 days time. You’ll just be 10 days behind everyone else. Does that bother you? Then you’ve probably come from other MMOs where you did something tediously boring that you disliked, like grind daily dungeons, in order to acquire decent gear quickly. This game is much less punishing in that regard, as the stat difference isn’t that big of a deal, and exotics are easy to acquire. I understand you want your (for Berserker’s) extra 11 power, 6 precision, and 1% crit damage, but honestly, your skill is going to come into play WAY before those extra stats do. You’ll get it.

On the plus side for WvWers, you get events done like it’s nobody’s business. If you play WvW for a few hours every night, you’ve probably already completed that portion of the daily, whereas some of us that spend more time in dungeons have not. Find your silver lining.

I don’t understand why they keep putting dungeons on the monthly. They took the player kills off, which is cool to me. People shouldn’t have to wvw if they aren’t inclined to do so. Similarly, people should not have to do pve if all they want to do is pvp.

Would you rather have them on the daily? It really doesn’t take long to do a dungeon run, especially the well-mentioned CoF path 1. It also makes sense to spread a low number of runs out over a month.

What they need, just a thought, is one for five runs in five unique dungeons. Spread people around, experience more of the game. (Opinion only, btw.)

it’s taken me longer than 2 days to complete, so not too too easy (unlike January), and I’m about 50 events and 200 salvages away from finishing (maybe 2-3 days), so not too hard.
I should say that a ‘monthly’ achievement should take nearly a month to complete. now, different time investments will change this, but I would think that it should be calibrated to take 30 hours to finish (1 hour/day for 30 days). Knowing how much I’ve played, this might be close to that.

i completed the February Monthly last night. took 4 days. i thought it was well-paced, except the dungeon part. Would be nice if fractals was considered a dungeon. 100 events was okay, i guess. daily completion tier was neat, could count the dailies away in that tier. 500 salvages was fun, as well.

I’m not saying you have to grind a dungeons for the monthly. What I mean is, dungeons are for grinding and that’s why many people hate them and avoid them (I want the exotic soldier’s gear and dungeons are the easy way to get the full set IMO but I need 3150 tears for it and that’s a lot of grind).

Additionally, your experience in dungeon is highly dependent on your luck. If you get a nice/tolerant party, you may enjoy it but, if you team up with over-ego, intolerant or elitist people, you would ended hating the dungeons even more.

not at all, and it isn’t not imaginative at all. it’s a slog to do repetitive actions. i mean a certain amount of repetition is expected, but 500 salvages… that’s just an inflated length designed to make it last longer, just like grinding for levels on 1 enemy in other games.

about the dungeons thing.. COF path 1. go to gw2lfg.com and get into one of them path1 farming groups(maybe learn the dungeon first) You can seriously complete it in 15 minutes- one guy left my group once because he wanted a group that did 8 minute runs. 5 cof path 1’s.. boring easy dungeon but you have a month to do it.. at most it would take 2 hours even with a less experienced group.

people talking about AC.. i find that dungeon to be challenging.. you might hate dungeons because you started there.

Grind Wars 2, that’s all I am going to say with this system. In GW1 it felt like the game was afflicted by a coat of miasma with the arrival of the achievement system and this game is all around it. It’s hard to ignore the achievement system before it completely overtakes your soul and you become a mindless neurotic achievement-fixated drone.

No, I would rather have no dungeons in monthly/daily requirements whatsoever. Same for WvW. I loathe doing dungeons, others hate WvW. Things such as Monthlies and Dailies should be achieveable for every type of player. I think that was the original idea behind it. Yet, it almost always forces players to do something that they don’t like to do. For me it’s dungeons. That’s why I’ve only finished one single monthly in the game. For others it’s WvW and I agree with them, that this shouldn’t be in either. If they put in dungeons or WvW it should be as part of a choice, like do either dungeons or something in WvW.

e.g.: (numbers are random and can be adjusted based on difficulty of each content) My idea for the next monthly: First throw in some random stuff, that everybody does anyway, like they also have this time. Could be something like x salvages, y gatherings, z events, etc.
Then they let you choose to either do 5 dungeons or capture 10 Supplycamps/whatever or do 10 Orr temple (could be something else so that lowbies can also complete it, but you get the idea: some outdoor PVE) events.

As they have mentioned it is supposed to include some kind of choice in the future, so I hope that’s the way they’re going. Whoever came up with the idea to force people into some area they are not comfortable with (be it Dungeons, WvW, etc.), should think if he’s in the right industry, because that is a sure way to needlessly frustrate a portion of your players.

Ok, so i finally understand. Dungeons and WvW are not in the PvE world. so people don’t want them. They have salvages this month, they did events also.. those are all PvE, they did Jumping puzzles last month(which i enjoyed but many still complained about that) those are PvE. gathering, crafting, kills, dodge, events, and vetrans are in your dailies.. and they added ‘complete 5 dailies’…. ok great there you have 4 things for PvE monthlies that cover just about everything you can possibly do in PvE. If that was all there was every month i might actually get bored of it and not do them. jumping puzzles every month would become very tiresome. 3 things for monthlies would be too easy for a monthly reward and they would most likely increase the amount of time you do those 3 things(thus people would complain). I don’t see a way to win.

all this and not even slight consideration to the people that only do dungeon runs. Do they want to go out of their way just to gather 20 things every day for a daily(i actually don’t think i have seen a complaint from that side)

The dungeon is so easy that it doesn’t matter whether the person is familiar or skilled enough. You can find just about any random group on the lfg site and get carried through. Groups can clear the dungeon in less than 7 minutes if they know what they are doing. So I went with 10 since he/she likely wouldn’t know what he/she was doing.

Let’s say 15 minutes for a really slow run. It’s still a very short amount of time. If you cannot spare 15 minutes of play-time, then you shouldn’t even be playing an MMO.

Never did a monthly before this one due to the WvW element. This time I have already completed it even though dungeons arn’t usually my thing using GW2LFG.COM was a breeze. If your inexperienced, as I am, and wanted to get some under your belt, all you have to do is post a LFG stating such and you will most likely find a good group to help you out easy enough. The other portions, DE’s, salvage and dailies I would not in any way consider a grind, more like just playing the game.
