I feel as though the fight itself has had no real testing from Quality Assurance.
It is frustrating to fight a boss monster who has the ability to spam a damage fear ability more than 5 times in 15 seconds of combat. Even when utilizing the fastest cooldown heal, there is absolutely NO way (as an ele) to survive parts of the Jormag fight.

During phase changes, the boss retreats to positions where it is readily able to damage the raid, but yet almost all of my abilities (except for auto attack) can’t even reach him, unless I would consider suicide running into the frost areas to land a few attacks.

Whoever designed these fights really needs to re-evaluate what they think is a fun fight.

I am also bothered by the fact that I am forced to write this in a way that wouldn’t hurt a child’s feelings. Knowing that Anet can sack my account if I were to actually say what’s on my mind is quite frankly, crap. I wanted to come in here and absolutely torch devs and QA teams, who, for the most part, hide behind a service agreement and use it as an excuse to ban people who do not believe that they are doing a good job.

As another ele (and a pretty weak one too), It’s totally possible to survive a Jormag fight without dying or spamming heal. Stay back out of the frost areas and if you don’t want to use flamethrowers/bazookas to take care of the wall, just take care of the vets/elites/champs or the ice pillars, depending on which phase of the battle you’re in, or res people. Go attack him once the wall’s down and you’ll still get your damage in for gold participation.

You can even break fear by toggling or avoid it entirely by standing in the right places.

I’m not saying it’s not a really long and monotonous fight, but it’s not broken in any way and it is survivable.

I agree that some parts of the game can be frustrating, in your case as an ele, Jormag.
But there are different ways to ‘help out’ like was stated :
rezz ppl, use zookas and use the fire shield , anticipate his skills :
- left claw raised = small ice blocks drop
- right claw raised= pillars of ice raise up (or ice walls)
- breathing air in = inducing fear
Every one of his skills can be countered or you can retreat back before he launches it.
That’s the beauty of a worldboss, you’re not alone in the fight and you don’t need to be a massive dmg dealer to aid in the battle.

I main an ele and if I’m playing smart, I don’t go down during Jormag at all and I don’t spam my heal.

During phase 2, you aren’t supposed to be attacking Jormag when he’s not stunned. You’re supposed to be attacking crystals and elites, etc to protect the golems carrying bombs when he’s not stunned. So yea, the game is not designed for you to be in range.

Phase 1, you’re supposed to use the charzooka. Some classes just have some skills on one or two weapons that can reach the ice wall from a safe distance.

Edit to add: And I’m in zerker gear for the most part.

Despite the fact that this along with basically all world bosses is easily AFKable, the OP is definitely correct about the design of this boss encounter being really terrible imo.

I completely agree with them on that at least. Never have I ever felt like doing this boss after having gone through with it the first time. It’s so boring to me that I cannot fathom how anybody considers it fun. Different tastes, but yeah… it’s not even a fight. :/

I believe the relevant issue here is whether the fight is fun or not. Attacking the adds and running in to damage the stunned dragon may be viable, but is it fun? Is using the gimmicks to avoid Jormag’s fear/knocks (by which I mean the shield, not stability) and whatever esoteric tactic people use not to die from the frost damage stacks fun?

Not for me, certainly not on repetitions in the teens or twenties.

It’s boring because the vast majority of people choose to take the path of least resistance and auto-attack while semi AFK in the one spot for phase 1. Very similar with how people stack on top of the box at golem to avoid the electric floor attack. All of his attacks can be avoided or at least mitigated with dodges, stun breaks, and stability. In phase 2, people still choose to stack at the one spot and auto attack dealing very little damage rather than help break the icicles and speeding up the fight. Attacking the adds contributes absolutely nothing to the fight either.

The bosses are fine. It’s the players that are causing them to be dull and drag on and on.

Phase 1, Shoot the barrier with the charrzooka. Use charrzooka 5 to ignore damaging things (cancel the skill before it finishes to skip the cooldown). Hit dragon when wall goes down. Repeat.

Phase 2, destroy crystals, stay away from the dragon. Damage dragon when it is stunned. Repeat.

But yeah I agree, it is way too long fight for the normal boss reward it gives. Takes longer than Tequatl.

Charzooka shield skil is interrupted when you move and recharge instantly. Use it to ignore dmg un phase 1. Use stability skills when the dragon lands. It use fear 3-4 times at the begining. Your utility skills are your friends.

Diamond skin on ele, but it doesnt always work as intended. And if the attack which lays the condition does damage as well and takes you below 90%, then the condition affects you simultaneously.

As for Jormag, there are plenty of counters for the fear spam. It cam be annoying, but it just involves bringing stun breakers and stability and timing the fire shield to his animation. The reason most ppl get affected because they dont use the right skills or ignore the fireshield ( which is still effective without the exploit). That is not The fault of Anets QA.

I think he has actually… you clearly don’t understand the phases of the event, Jourmags animated clues or what to do within each phase except to try and hit him and wonder why you can’t…. you don’t need to spam heals all the time, you don’t need to try to damage Jourmag when he isn’t stunned and you don’t need to be in range of him all the time to be useful. Add to that you are provided weapons with range to damage the wall in phase 1 which also has a protection shield, you can also damage him at start of stage 2 when he’s targetable.
If you feel compelled to try the suicide run then gear/trait correctly, time your heals, pop stability at the correct times and pray hard.. otherwise do other useful stuff like protecting the golem, kill ice pillars, kill vets/champs.. just please don’t cry foul of an event that is only marginally more challenging than Shatterer and that challenge is basically … time/boredom.

Have you tried watching the ledges?

Yep, full of semi afks not contributing to the task at hand, ie destroying ice formations to let golems through, and the collectable from the frost chest is just a tad this side of impossible to get (approx 89 gold on TP for a 1 silver item shows its rarity).

Other than that, pretty good, enjoyable event, that doesn’t require the co-ordination at Tequatl, which is a lot of fun but at a whole different level.

Dude. Its a l2p issue. Sorry

Sadly, it is.

Phase 1: grab a charrzooka stand in the bubble, autoattack the ice wall; when you see ice rain coming in, press 5. When you see an ice wall coming, dodge. When you are feared either stun-break or wait for one of the gazillion warriors and guardians around you to shout-break the fear.

Phase 2: grab a flame thrower and destroy the ice pillars to get the golems to the Claw.

You are not alone in not understanding this fight. Especially phase 2, a lot of uneducationable players always stand in a bubble and do next to zero damage while at the same time a few who understand the fight desperately try to guide the golems through the ice pillars.

That’s the annoying thing of this fight. Players who are uncapable or unwilling to adapt their concept of an encounter.

Rather than dumbing down the NPE it would have been better if the boss fights had some real explanation.

PS: breaking the cooldown of the charrzooka shield by dodging/moving didn’t work anymore last time I tried.

I just find Claw to be tedious and boring. Once you know the mechanics, it is very easy but still takes too long. Phase 1 is horrible since you are mainly just autoattacking with charrzooka 1 while waiting for which claw attack you have to mitigate. And phase 2 is equally as boring if you aren’t farming champs. Guiding golems isn’t fun. To be honest, some world boss fights I just avoid now. Claw of Jormag, Tequatl(takes too long and can still sometimes fail), Megadestroyer(people are too lazy to do the pre events half the time), Taidha(tons of leechers and a boring pre event) and even Fire Elemental(pre events take too long and boss is dead in less than 30 seconds).

… Even when utilizing the fastest cooldown heal, there is absolutely NO way (as an ele) to survive parts of the Jormag fight.

As an Ele Main, I must respectfully say, this is just not true. I run this event all the time and it has been years since I have been downed much less defeated in this battle.

During phase changes, the boss retreats to positions where it is readily able to damage the raid, but yet almost all of my abilities (except for auto attack) can’t even reach him, unless I would consider suicide running into the frost areas to land a few attacks.

Here are a few hints

  • Hopefully you are an L80 in at least Exotic Armor. You don’t call that out so I will assume you are.
  • If you are running full Zerker gear that is your first problem. Zerker is worthless verses Claw. Add a Soldier Chest piece and Amulet, maybe a ring and/or accessory. It will help your survivability immensely.
  • Use a Staff and attune to fire for the Phase one Wall attack. Your Skill 1 hits it just fine without using a Charrzooka.
  • After he spikes you with the dreaded Dragon Bomb from above use Ether Renewal . If you start taking a lot of damage, switch attunement to water for your Skill 3 & 5. The Minor Water Trait Soothing Mist is very helpful.
  • Once the wall goes down, find the spot between his head and left claw and focus all your AoE damage there for Triple damage. Once the NPC says Eyes, run away, rinse/repeat till his health gets below the letter (g) on his bar.

That should stop you from going down in Phase 1

  • For Phase 2, Even though your Fire Staff skill one will hit Claw without being in the Icy Grave zone, do not attack Claw directly. Instead, Stay in Fire and go for the Ice Crystals with Skill 1 & 2. This gets the Golems to him faster which is the main purpose of this phase. Like phase one when the Icy Grave goes away, give him everything you got.

Not sure what to say to this one. Having a legitimate grievance, expressed in a well thought out, mature and respectful manner would not hurt anyone’s feelings let alone a child. Flaming the Devs and QA team or anyone else for that matter would be unacceptable with or without a Service Agreement. Hopefully it is just the frustration talking, maybe once you get the hang of the intricacies if the fight you will see that this event is pretty easy (though granted, somewhat long).

Phases are fine. When the boss stretches out an encounter due to invulnerability or inaccessibility, that isn’t fine. It’s boring and unengaging. Do you find it fun when you aren’t able to fight the boss and have to do something else? I don’t. It’s one reason I avoid Tequatl. The megalaser phases stink. I even hate Karkas with all their stupid evades. It artificially elongates the fights for no good reason.

Instead of having intelligent phases that require some coordination, phases like these force players to do something else since damaging the boss is impossible until some other task is done. A better way would be if the boss had some lethal sort of attack that would only happen if this one thing was there. Whether it be an add or an object, it would be something that had to be dealt with while the boss is still active. Or maybe the boss has a weak point that can be exposed if you do something like hit it with an explosive barrel or an add dies near it. There are tons of ways to make bosses more interesting and engaging other than forcing players to do something else since the boss can’t be touched at certain times.

Which is fine. The bosses that burn in less than 2 minutes from doing nothing is quite silly and even more disengaging imo though. Jormag time wise is probably more accurate to wvw or pvp if you take in how fast you gain money, so I don’t really have a problem with the time it takes. I wouldn’t have any problem with a rework though if they found something they thought would be more challenging/engaging.

BTW. another hint is to know when an event will fail and walk away. Are there too few people? Are they organized (how many commander tags are there)? Do you see things happening like bone walls with Teq? If so walk away and have fun somewhere else while the people there die.

Generally I have characters that ‘specialize’ in certain bosses. Well, any can do Covington. This allows me to get used to what skills I have at my command for what bosses. They also have specific territories they ‘specialize’ in covering but that is mostly so completions are easier.

Sylari elementalist (staff) – Teq
Asura Engineer – Jormag and all the 2-hour-respawn low level bosses
Charr Guardian – Shatterer
Charr Ranger – everything else (the only one for SW enemies)

Not sure how you are dying in the Jormag fight if you actually do the encounter correctly.

Grab a charrzooka or used ranged attacks for the first part. Use the shield ability if/when the ice wave is about to hit you.

Second part, grab a flamethrower and take out crystals that might destroy the golems. Once Jormag is in his “stunned” state, DPS as normal. If you are constantly dying then you are getting to close to Jormag. You only need to get close to him if he is in that stunned state.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Yes but I wanted to give the OP options with just whats on his/her back without having to add picking up an environmental weapon into the mix. Plus as an Ele, IMHO the flexibility of access to 20 Attunement skills far outweighs the 5 you get with the Pact Bazooka.
But since you bring it up, Skill 5 Heat Shield also protects you against the Dragon Bomb nicely.

I guess OP is one of those afks and now he is crying because he found his character dead on the water because of the fear attack.

You don’t stay close to him, you just hit him when he is vulnerable, and you will always have a lot of guardians with condition removal and conditions converted to boons when facing this boss.

I go with PTV gear and trooper runes, with my guardian.

I’m kinda surprised nobody here mentioned this one (maybe because it’s kinda quirky to use), but in phase one, when everyone is standing damaging the wall, if you toggle walk, your character won’t move as far when hit by fear. Of course, you have to remember to toggle back to run when the wall comes down or when you get knocked back…

I have a full berserk elem, and i almost never go down in the whole fight, but i agree that the fight is insanely annoying. Phase 1 is pure nightmare. An undodgeable fear without any CD (you can be chain feared for 10 seconds and run straight to veterans/champ, please), used in around 1/4 second, and whose only counter on some classes is a skill in charrzooka/flamethrower with a 30 seconds CD? So fun.

Btw, the fast CD on the fire shield if you don’t finish it has been fixed (more than a week ago, iirc). Now, it’s always a 30 second CD. Enjoy getting feared to death because even if you slot every stunbreaker you have, you may not have enough.

Phase 2 is a bit better (long casting time for the fear, and jormag doesn’t seem to spam it). The problem there is that 2/3 of the players don’t even understand that the goal is to protect the golems, making the phase incredibly long. Yeah, most players are stupid (“Hey, i can dps jormag with my longbow even if he’s not stunned! I’m so awesome!” No, you’re useless) and can’t seem to get the fact that they are making the fight longer than it should be.

If you’re not using the tools the NPCs provide, you’re gonna have a tougher time imo. Yeah it can get annoying that he can spam fear or the ice that pushes you back. But it’s honestly very survivable. There are lots of things to do during the fight and plenty of opportunities when he’s vulnerable where you can go and get your hits in.

Also don’t worry so much about dying; there is next to zero penalty if you go down. Plus in events like this usually someone will help get you back on your feet. I love rezzing people during Claw of Jormag.

For me during the fight I usually use the char weapon to attack the ice wall as much as I can. But if I get pushed too far back due to fear or ice then I’ll just look around and see who needs rezzing or defend the cannon area.

Phase 2 I pick up a flame thrower and ‘watch the ledges’. Mobs spawn and you can take them down easily with flame throwers and they drop champ boxes. You can easily get 5+ champ boxes during phase 2 and as long as you aren’t trying to be on top of an enemy (flamethrower has a long range) you don’t have to worry about dying.

Then I believe it’s skill 4 on flamethrower which lets you jump forward a long distance. Use that when Claw of Jormag is vulnerable to get up there and get some hits in and then retreat. Heck I just use the flamethrower on his foot and then jump back to the ledges when it’s time for more loot. :P

Lots of ways to play the fight and lots of people around to help if you get in a pinch.

The first part with the fear spam is annoying. The other parts I have gotten used to. Like the whole ice spikes (which are backwards now, silly Anet) and ice shards. The fear should be on a proper boss timer rotation. Not "Hey I’ll just spam it a bunch of times and make this fight more tedious than it needs to be’.

Isn’t there a trait that lets eles ignore conditions as long as they have 90% health?

Diamond skin on ele, but it doesnt always work as intended. And if the attack which lays the condition does damage as well and takes you below 90%, then the condition affects you simultaneously.

As for Jormag, there are plenty of counters for the fear spam. It cam be annoying, but it just involves bringing stun breakers and stability and timing the fire shield to his animation. The reason most ppl get affected because they dont use the right skills or ignore the fireshield ( which is still effective without the exploit). That is not The fault of Anets QA.

Ah well than, I’ll be sure to bring my well of power for you squishy eles! Praise grenth!

During phase 1’s ice wall, if you’re an elementalist, you should be using a staff, have a frost bow and standing in the middle. Meteor shower + ice storm makes a joke out of everyone using a gun. Healing rain can be used to preemptively cleanse the fear, while cleansing wave (trait) and signet of air can be used to break it. Since the fear is bugged, assume it’ll always happen twice, so never break the first one.

Now, use to (before a recent patch) you could use the heat shield #5 on the provided rocket launcher… as in you could start casting it and half way through the cast time move and it would go on a 4 second CD so you could use it again to block the next incoming fear. Not anymore. It’s “fixed” so that it goes on a 30 CD no matter if you break the channel or not. So, I stopped doing the first phase. I run in, see where the wall is at, then I go do mining, forging, or tree chopping until it’s at 2nd phase. Let the people who don’t mind getting fear’d 1000 times during 1st phase deal with it. I’ll just come in on 2nd phase with zero frustration and enjoy the event from there on out and still get the same amount of reward as those who participated in first phase. Maybe if they hadn’t “fixed” the heat shield #5 CD I would still participate in first phase, but not now. I got on the Nope Train headed to Nopeville, Nowayinhell at 200mph.

I can’t hit him easily as a Thief without 1200 range and can’t trigger my AA so I just stay back bored and shoot icicles. He doesn’t really do much beyond simply bulling you with fear and knockbacks. Been waiting for his Tequatl treatment since it happened cuz I find him very boring and tedious to do anymoar.

Is somebody complaining about the last remotely interesting non-megazerg world boss in the game?

K, just checking.

The most annoying part of the Claw fight is that the time to reward ratio is horrifically out of sync with every other world boss.

I just skip him now, so sense spending all that time for such a pitiful reward.

They need to either reduce the time it takes to down him, or up the reward for killing him because right now you are really just wasting your time showing up.

He can be killed in roughly 6 min from the point of when you destroyed the final crystal. The extra time it takes from that has entirely to do with the player base and how they choose the method that requires the least amount of effort which in this case is the slowest.

But yeah I agree, it is way too long fight for the normal boss reward it gives. Takes longer than Tequatl.

It’s actually more of a normal boss fight, just most of the other bosses were remade to be so very-very easy.

1.
a. Defend the turrets
b. Zerg into jormag when the wall is down.
2.
a. Destroy ice crystals
b. Zerg into jormag when the wall is down.

As far as for fears, the times I’m in range, I pop off a stealth.

Megadestroyer(people are too lazy to do the pre events half the time)

One of those suffer from the same scaling problem shatterer’s pre used to have. With enough people around the first part of the lab event turns into a stupidly long and boring thing because while the number of destroyers to kill increases with the number of people around the number of destroyers that spawn do not.

I’m a rubbish player, I manage to kill my poor ele at the drop of a hat, but Jormag can be made to work out ok. For one thing, you can get away with doing very little actual damage and still get a gold and all the loot.

I also follow this simple plan – for the first part, stay far, far away from him (defending the laser canons, for instance, or even just rezzing people), then the INSTANT you hear ‘The wall is down!’ go straight into air for speed, run all the way up to him as fast as possible, then into fire or earth and pound the bejesus out of him for the few moments you get before the wall goes up again. The moment you see players start to run away again, RUN AWAY lol…go back to what you were doing before. Rinse. Repeat.

For the second stage, with the ice pillars, you don’t need to get anywhere near him. Stay out of the fear zone and just destroy ice pillars and rez the fallen. You get plenty of credit just for those things And if you go into water and spam area healing just as feared and damaged players are running up towards you, you can really be a big help
