Just bought GW2.
Don’t let the naysayers get you down.
Still waiting to hear what the rumor for the next patch is!
Uhm i was just saying that. You think too negatively it seems.
Yeah coz disliking portions of the game is called “tunnel-visioning”. GW2 is perfect, the best game ever. Even crappy mini-games like Keg Brawl is so popular!

“This won’t end well.”
LOL. That should be the subtitle of the game.

I wouldn’t really call that “work”. Work implies a useful result.
Guys lets stick to the topic. Every (MMO) game has its flaws and its unique features that make it so amazing.
The nice thing is that GW2 has in my eyes a lot of these amazing features.
I just laugh at some of these forum people. Really, nowadays if you buy a console game, you might get 60 hours of play out of it, if its good. If you’re unlucky, or you own a Wii, it’ll be 15. A game that has multiplayer value, achievements, creativity, you might get a little more out of. This game lasts way beyond most, if you’ve seriously beat the game and done everything, you’ve probably played 2000 hours. What more do you expect out of a game?

Not much – how about 1) not changing the fundamentals of the game such as class balance every month.
2) Not introducing ridiculous gear grind
3) Stop dreaming about ESport. Never going to happen
4) Making more fun good looking PVE content which made Year One a success.
5) Going into forums expecting real discussion about the game and not getting astroturf.
So i have been rather skeptical about GW2 at first, mainly because i’m not so much into mmo’s i guess. I tried WoW and it didn’t get to me, i tried SWTOR – and apart from the story missions it was boring as hell, i tried Tera and apart from being pretty it looked like a manequin – fancy clothes on the outside, stale plastic on the inside.
Some time ago, a couple of my friends started playing GW2 and their impressions were something like “omfg this is the best mmo ever made, you have to try it pronto!”. As i said, i was skeptical at first, but as time passed i became more and more interested until finally yesterday i purchased it.
First of all i would like to say that the download speed for the client is just ridiculously low(my ips provides a connection of average 100 – 200 mbit/s), but as i was at work while it downloaded, i guess it’s not a big problem anyway.
And then there was the moment of character creation..and then there were the first quests in the Norn homeland, and then my friends joined and their high levels downscaled so we could play together…public events, inventory & craft system, story, jumping sections, vistas, questing, leveling..sorry, i’m just so overwhelmed by all of this that my overexcited emotions can’t be put on a hold.
The base line – At this moment this game is the best massive multiplayer experience i have ever been part of, and the fact that i’ve just scratched the surface, in my opinion, makes it one of the best gaming experiences i have had this year(which has been rather dissapointing in the case of PC gaming, at least for me).
Thank you Arena.net!Keep up the good work!
All negativity aside. Here is my advice to help you enjoy the game for the longest possible period of time. Focus on only 1 character. Don’t create alts. Just become an expert with 1. You will have more money, more time, and more fun that way.
Bonus points if you roll a warrior, guardian, or mesmer.
Why not ranger? Why no love or other classes besides the holy trinity.
Why not ranger? Why no love or other classes besides the holy trinity.
Since ranger lacks depth. I stopped playing GW2 and whent back to wow since i made ranger my first main. I thought this game and its playstyle lacked the depth that i was used to in wow.
Now i play an engineer and have the direct opposite opinion.
wait till you reach lvl 80
Yep things to look forward to at level 80:
- grind
- different loot algorithm than level 1-79, so your loot might drop off entirely until you get 300% magic find
- new exotic gear grind now that karma is nerfed
- if you’re playing a pet class, pets that die continuously in every boss fight
- unless you’re playing a warrior, severe imbalance in pve
Just keeping it honest.
Balrog, I’m glad you’re enjoying the game. (I’m also sorry some folks have coopted your thread!)
I also wasn’t an MMO guy but found a game I liked in GW2. Even long after I fully leveled up my character to 80, completed map exploration, and completed my personal story – and even though I sometimes put the game down for a while – I often find my way back to it.
I hope you and you friends make some good memories in the game.
this game is amazing, and the people that say otherwise are people like me that love this game to death and see potential to be the best MMO ever, ANET is just making a like of strange decisions.
As a game, this is easily one of the best ive EVER played.
As an on going MMO, development is … strange to be the least. They def care about the game and give us tons of things to do and im not complaining, but a lot of the normal things MMO do like more classes, races, new areas, dont seem to be on the table and thats what we really want. Still though, its an amazing game and dont let these forums destroy you
Also, last thing. I too stopped playing this game for 2 months, twice, and found my way back and fell in love again. Its a giant work in progress and if ANET listens to us in the future this will be the only game to really challenge WOW.
Actually new races and areas are on the table and in a not-so-remote future. New classes are on the table too, but something I wouldn’t expect anytime soon (2+ years from now)
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”

Even though I complain….I really do like this game, hence why I keep playing. My main beef with Anet so far, has been the complete lack of direction by its devs and complete lack of content. Its been a bit over one year and the last real update was fractals. While the LS has been good in a way to keep the world “living”, core content updates have been completely missing.
The game has potential. Im still waiting for the devs to deliver on that potential. The current direction the devs have taken with this game, is as if the devs are in a fight against the community….which is not a good sign.

Come back after a month or so and you be singing a different tune.
The first few months are always “ZOMG best game ever”…..
“Np, it part of the Job :) " – Proud Guardian.
Honestly, my fondness for this game kinda died this morning.
They put out a meager patch with the usual host of bugs and mistakes, generated the entirely predictable backlash and rather than roll up their sleeves and fix it, they launched a new program of no-warning moderation against any response they could even vaguely categorize as less that constructive.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Actually, I’m still deciding whether or not to log in. A good forum discussion is a component of my enjoyment of any MMO, and right now the air is a bit toxic in here.

Its toxic in here because the majority of players patience is wearing thin waiting for Anet to deliver something worthwhile. Not the usual bug ridden farm this farm that quests.

Aside from the fact that some people really like Keg Brawl…a theme park MMO is just that… a theme park. That is to say it’s like Disneyworld.
If you go to Disneyworld and all you are about is rollercoasters, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. If you go to Disneyworld and all you want to see it shows, you’re going to likely run out of things to do relatively quickly.
The people who enjoy Disneyworld the most, are the people who are most open to the widest range of experience. Those who like the Hall of Presidents and Space Mountain so to speak.
There is nothing at all wrong with liking certain types of content and not liking others. There is very definitely something wrong with saying Disneyworld is a bad theme park because I prefer roller coasters. I would never go to Disneyworld and then say to someone, you haven’t missed anything, without knowing what it is that they like about theme parks. That’s the problem with how people relate to the forums.
This game is deeply flawed for my optimal play style. But my optimal play style would be shared by so few people, I can’t consider the game deeply flawed generally.
My problem with Guild Wars 2 is that it’s not immersive enough. For the most part, I’m always aware I’m playing a game.
Once I realized this was the case, I stopped expecting this game to have more roller coasters so to speak. It’s not what the devs have designed. It’s not what they’ve tried to design.
Would I prefer a more immersive MMO. Sure. It’s just that I accept that this isn’kitten
Gw2 starts off good for most people but…
Even with all their faults I dare say I as a casual player had way more to play in less casual friendly games than GW2 I actually had more activities to enjoy on a day to day basis in games that were more heavily into dungeons than this game and more heavily into the gear treadmill and I don’t mean just logging in and standing around. I’ve made lists before of all of the things missing from this title so saying that it’s much improved while it’s missing these things is not looking at the game objectively by any means.
Add to that all of the problems from poorly tested content or balance patches, the lack of balance in PVE, the missing features promised by the prelaunch presentations including but not limited to the manifesto, the problems of concentrating and giving favoritism to only certain classes making them look nothing like the original videos of class gameplay examples, and what you have is a growing audience that’s taking notice of all of these failings.
Despite certain people’s desires, it’s NOT the fault of the people frustrated at the product’s direction and those who post about their frustrations in these forums hoping the devs will hear them and do something to correct the problems. We aren’t the devil for pointing out the problems.
And laughably comparing an mmo to a console game doesn’t change the fact that it’s nothing like many of the mmos out there and there should be some basics that we’d all expect in any mmo if anyone’s ever played one before.
The game is designed I think specifically to be fun up to the end, and it’s always been a weakness of theirs instead of fixing it in many ways they’ve made it worse.

If I am allowed to add my 2 cents to the discussion Right now, GW2 is arguably the ‘best’ MMO on the market. The reason why many people complain is that it could have been so much better. Unfortunately, ArenaNet seems to have some sort of management crisis. The history of the game shows clearly that they are suffering from miscommunication, lack of central vision and suboptimal workflows. They have some amazing tech and very talented people – but there is nothing that would focus these talents on the work that has to be done. They started amazingly well. Then, they were kind of outsmarted by the hardcore players (who quickly found the way to ‘break’ the game – I am talking about metaplay) and instead of calmly thinking how to fix the issues, they started applying bandaids. Which broke the game even more. I remember half a year ago, when many people were complaining about patches, I was saying ‘be patient, they are good designers, they have a balance master-plan, it just takes time’. I hate to say it, I am not that sure about that anymore. The whole balancing act eludes me. I feel that much of the balancing the team does is based on impressionistic, subjective opinions of the devs instead of more objective, statistics-based data mining.
What the game needs, quickly:
- More transparent, consistent development and issue resolution
- Clear gameplay design principles, which have to be communicated to the players and balancing must follow those principles. Example: all weapon abilities must do at least two things to promote skilled gameplay (aka. no ‘boring abilities’); weapons should have one bread and butter attack ability, some situational abilities and some high risk/reward abilities; player should be in control of the character (responsiveness!!), there should be no hard counters, misfiring an ability should be punished, HARD. All in all, the gemaplay principles must give the players the feeling that they/their team is responsible for the failure, and not some ‘unfair’ unpredictable game element (e.g. pet killed off by PVE encounters simply because they don’t have enough HP).
- Identify the core gameplay and class problems and devise the ways to fix them. E.g. ranger pet responsiveness; pet uptime. Do this for ALL classes. A-Net’s attachment to warriors seems a bit weird
- Rework encounters and mechanics to promote team play. E.g. make combo fields more important and crucial for team success. Right now, optimal solution for PvE is going all DPS. This should change. I have no idea how this should be changed, but I am sure that this is possible. One idea would be to limit the way how DPS can be increased, e.g. remove pure DPS gear from the game altogether. This way, players will be ‘forced’ to go support in one way or another. Add more options to support based on the DPS (e.g. buff/heal on critical hit, heal on dodge etc. are good mechanics here). Remove the conception of DPS/support weapons – all weapons should do comparable damage, but support different playstyles and ideas.
Right now, they seem to be trying to change their development structure and make it more transparent. Which is a good sign. We’ll see.
P.S. This ended up much longer then expected Hope it makes at least some sense.
Hey there !
First I would like to thank balrog.1307 for opening this thread. I was depressed but now I feel so elated after reading what you guys wrote xD.
Now balrog, please, hear my advice : Enjoy and don’t listen to any of us. See the truth for yourself !
PS: Don’t read threads related to game balance be it PvE or PvP… you would not understand them or perhaps you would xD.

1) Not sure if that would be a good thing. People are crying out for more balancing patches and if the fundamentals are bork, which they are at the moment, it needs changing.
2) Agreed on Ascended gear, do not agree if you’re talking about Legendaries. IMO its too easy atm.
3) Why not dream about ESports? Are you saying that game devs should never have ambitions?
4) TA and Tequatl if that was instanced are both fun PvE encounters. Fun is subjective.
i tried Tera and apart from being pretty it looked like a manequin – fancy clothes on the outside, stale plastic on the inside.
This has to be the best description of a typical MMO these days.
Lipstick on a pig, another fitting analogy.
The problem is those who do not remember the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat it. Unfortunately after watching some dev videos I can see why the issues continue in this genre. While these companies hire YOUNG devs cause they want the same like minds that would play the game to develop it, they also throw out the experience of the older devs that have been there and done that and learned.
I’m curious which videos you’re referring to. The last one I watched was the LFG preview.
I still feel like the OP after 5227 hours played. A lot of folks still love the game, too. <3

Just keep in mind that all the naysayers are obviously still playing
Most of them aren’t. I log in to see what’s new every patch, and 2 minutes later I log out due to boredom. I’m actually on the forums more often than I play GW2, but I hope to see that change in the future if Anet implements a patch that I like.
Personally I think you’ve actually come at the perfect time because for the most part the " lack of end game " as many call it may slowly begin to be stamped out if rumors of the next patch are true.
Very curious as to what these “rumors” are…care to share?
I just returned after nearly a year…I got a few toons up to the mid 20s and then left for MoP…now I’m back and my new toon is in the 40s and I am in love with this game like it’s beta all over again. Maybe it’s because I’ve put WoW behind me for good, and that I’m not rushing AT ALL to 80, are why I’m enjoying the game as much as I am.
I don’t get the negativity at all, it’s confusing. The game is better than when it launched, which was when everyone loved it. Maybe people need to take a break like I did!
As someone else mentioned you have missed out on some good dungeons but ANET appear to be appreciating the value of permanent content more these days. Outside of that the rumors are once you hit max level theres nothing to do. Its debatable but as I just mentioned ANET have made some solid progress lately with PvE permanent content and difficult content. ( Tequatl…new krait mega boss?!?!? )
Welcome to Guild Wars 2. It’s all down hill from here.
Don’t worry buddy, give it some time and you’ll realize GW2 is as shallow as a Bahama beach. You’ll go back to single player games in no time. Trust me, I learned the hard way.
Welcome to GW2, balrog. Enjoy your journey. Don’t get too disheartened by what the others say here. Yes, GW2 has its flaws (and people who know me will know I have no problems saying so), but so does every game. GW2 has a fantastic base to build on, and ANet deserves to be praised rightfully for the stuff they did right too.

I like single player games too, but Guild Wars 2 provides stuff you can’t actually get in single player games. They’re not mutually exclusive.
If you don’t like the game that’s fair enough…assuming someone else will find what you find though is probably not so fair.
Pretty much agree with the posts here. The game was awesome before Nov 15th, 2012. Then it became the #1 best selling AND #1 most grindy game of all time. For the game that didn’t have vertical progression they sure seem to go to extreme lengths to put grind in the game. Until recently you had to grind PvE to get the Ascended gear for PvP. At least in WoW you can get your PvP gear by doing PvP.
We’ll see how it plays out I’m experimenting till Halloween. I’m forcing myself to give it a try but so far I’ve been pretty much convinced of you get what you pay for even with MMOs.

My biggest problem is that we have had to grind the same content from day 1 over and over again. While I think that some grind (dungeon token grind is a pretty nice sweet spot) is necessary for an mmo, Anet have gone crazy over the amount of grind necessary for some of the items. Its much worse when the content hasn’t changed and every two weeks a new temporary grind is introduced.
Seriously people why on earth are some of you trying hard to make OP feel bad about a game he is enjoying?
if like some of you are saying in some hundred hours of game play or so he finds the game not to his liking then he finds the game not to his liking but why try hard to ruin those few hundred hours of enjoyment for him? what would anyone get from that! seriously people what are you trying to get? because everything I can think of is bad and destructive.
Some dislike the game after a while others played 1000s of hours and still love it either way a game is meant to be enjoyed so let him enjoy it for as long as possible!
balrog follow Redg advise, dont listen to anyone, those in favor or those against.. play the game the way you like and make up your opinion, its different for everyone. some think this is the worst mmo ever others thing this is actually the best mmo ever. Its way too subjective.
Its worth the purchase price at the very least.
Game is great the first run through.

Welcome to GW2 Balrog! Have heaps of fun, meet new players and just go on out there and have a good time.
I’m too jaded to even retort with the same few people that insist on ruining the game image to newcomers; I don’t know what they intend to achieve after all. It’s as if they’re actually trying to chase new players away. So bitter..
Welcome to GW2!
I have two level 80 characters and working on six more alts! I log in and I still have so much to do, it takes me a few minutes to decide. Currently, I’m focusing on finally getting world completion done on my main. One day, I might get The Bifrost
I also RP, so this can keep me happily occupied for years when many others have moved on. Story arcs are actually planned to last at least a year or two.
I have played many MMOs over the years, but since the demise of SWG, this is the only one I still feel excited about and look forward to the new updates.
My advice to any new player is take your time, if you are struggling, roll another character and a different class, it could make the world of a difference. Try everything and explore every knook and cranny, it’s a beautiful world with many hidden surprises such as jumping puzzles and each point of interest, waypoint or heart quest you discover, gives you XP.
Remember, there is nothing you truly have to grind for, it’s all optional. Have fun and enjoy the game at your own pace.
Thanks again for all the answers. At the moment i think i have 2 more enjoyable moments to add to collection :
1) While running to another map section an event started in which i saw about 30-40 other players gathering around a place i just did a couple of quests, just out of nowhere there appeared this massive Champion of Sons of Svanir who started making portals, and summoning hurricanes and ice storms, and all of this while these 30 to 40 other players were smashing him. Lighting and gunpowder was in the air and it felt so godkitten epic. I don’t know the cause, be it teethgrinding epic gameplay or the northern setup, but for the first time in mmo the action felt like it was really meaningfull and wasn’t meant mainly only for the loot. And the fact that it wasn’t some high level dungeon, but an action event in an open field.Wow.Just..wow.
2) Maybe not as epic but still really made my evening. While questing, me & a friend of mine came to a fort that was being attacked by sons of svanir from time to time. Having played other mmo like games a little, i didn’t feel threatened by any of that story fluff, because the mechanics of mmo’s stated that character hubs are not accessible to mobs, not even speaking about the possibility of a whole wipeout. So we went on questing, and eventually came by an event in which we had to escort trading caravan back to the fort i was talking about. Considering all said above, imagine my surprise when we came by the fort and the caravaner told me that he won’t go there because it’s occupied by sons of svanir and that someone should put a stop to this. So we went there and rescued the brave lionheart fellows from the tyranny of these fanatics. It was absolutely fan-tas-tic.
All and all i’m finding this game more & more amazing ^^

And that my friend, is the power of role-playing, of which many of the naysayers simply know not of how to savour. There’s plenty more where that came from and lots others to do as well. Really glad to hear you’re already having a ball of a time
Hello I have played this game for almost 4,000 hours across my accounts.
Every day I tell myself that I hate this game. It’s kind of a love-hate relationship I guess.
It’s like seeing a kid with 150 IQ shooting up heroin. So much lost potential, but you still hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel, because if the kid got his kitten straightened up the entire world would lie before him.
Your first 100 hours of playtime will probably be magnificent, just like it was for the rest of us. Savor it while you can! (100 hours is rare for games nowadays, anyway)
