2. Hear me out.

The new patch brought the laurel system as we know. With it the new ascended amulet. By a rough calculation it would take 20 days to obtain that single item.

What bothers me is that it requires an uninterrupted 1h per day (time for daily + time for monthly roughly divided across the 20 days) x 20 days streak. I am fully aware that the developers have more ways to obtain items planned out for us in the future. But is this a good start?

What I’m trying to say is that a little flexibility would be nice. I don’t think binding laurels to dailies that are lost once skipped is a good idea.

Would it be better if we had a weekly system?

[EDIT] I apologize if this sounded like I’m looking at it as a chore. The point I’m trying to get across is that perhaps there should be a more flexible way to handle laurels. Like something else other than the daily quest, with a weekly cap sort of thing.

I think if it bothers you, then don’t do it. It’s a game, above all we should play these things for fun.

Dailies aren’t a big deal, if you’re looking at it from a ‘lost once skipped’ viewpoint I think that’s the wrong way to. Play the game: If you complete your daily whilst playing it then great. If not? No big deal. Ascended gear are not needed at all in game unless you’re in the Fractals a lot I hear. And if so, well you’ll get your equipment in other ways, right?

And yes, while I’m generally against yet another form of currency being introduced into the game, for what it is I think it’s an okay start.

most look at things like these dailies and laurels as a must do. Some people enjoy these type of things and log on just to do them. Dailies are much more tolerable than on other MMOs IMO.

Monthly. Like I said its a rough estimate. 20 days of 1 laurels + a monthly 10 laurels = 30 laurels for the amulet.

Also, I can’t do 5 events in 3-4 minutes.

I remember interviews where they scoffed at the dailies for currency in other titles because of the grind. I’m highly disappointed that not only did they not include the retro for all the other achieves but that they made getting gear yet another RNG system. We have way too much RNG as it is, do we really need more chests that are not affected by MF at this point? And then there’s the T6 bags. We can already get RNG bags from the mobs how does this help us get the single kind of T6 mats we need to gear alts unless it’s their intention to make us work for 10 months for something like that? Why not just put the individual items in there and let us decide what we need to buy of them to make our stuff? Lodestones and Powerful Blood come to mind instantly.

The biggest issue I have with this:

1 -it’s per account rather than per character.
Anyone who has more than one toon is given a big fat middle-finger by ANet.

2 – you have no real choice in what shows up on your dailies or monthlies. Don’t like them, tough.

3 – you have no way to do multiples on one toon or one account if you happen to have the time. At least in the other titles ANet scoffs at, you can do as many dailies as you want.

This is nothing but artificial kitten-blocking.

I will agree that it seems that laurel system seems really lackluster, but it shouldn’t take an hour to do your daily. I can usually get mine done in 20-30 minutes, sometimes slightly longer. It all depends on the events, and there are some zones that they pop back to back rather fast.

I agree with the OP. It would be absolutely awesome if instead of a daily per day, we would get a contingent of 7 dailies per week, doable at our own leasure. I’d probably do all the week’s dailies on the weekend in that case, and not miss out on anything.

Which defeats the whole point of getting people out of LA and playing the game. If you could trade tokens for laurels people would just do speed runs for them.

The same for doing them on multiple characters, start toon do daily delete start toon etc etc 30 laurels from a weekend grind.

Ok in a few months when people have rings and amulets and laurels are sitting in the bank if you “miss” a day wont seem so bad but i understand the OP’s point i feel guilty if i dont do the daily atm.

If once a week you got a daily double ie miss the previous day you do twice as much today for 2 laurels it would give people a little more flexability.

No, making laurels convertible through currencies that you acquire from doing anything (karma, skill points) or WvW will get people out of LA. The current laurels for dailies system does not get people out of LA because its still much slower than fractals, hence why gw2lfg.com is still filled with fractal listings.

I don’t see the problem with them honestly. All the stuff in the new dailies is stuff that just sort of happens accidentally in a 2-4 hours play session, or is stuff you can knock out in ~30 mins if you just want to do the daily.

Yes, it takes around 20ish days to get an amulet, but honestly, those amulets are accessible to everyone now. There’s not a single player that can’t reliably get the ascended amulet they’re after by putting in a bit of time and effort to get it, and that was the entire point of the ascended rarity as stated by Anet: It’s supposed to be a long term goal, but not light years long and hard like legendaries.

You’re not supposed to have your ascended gear as fast as you got your exotics, and so its all based around some time-gating gaps to ensure it’s a gradual progression. I don’t see a problem with that, as it is the intended statistical “best” you’re ever going to have, and it’s really just icing on the cake for the majority of content so you’re not overly disadvantaged during the acquisition process. Makes spending time with a character valuable in a way that twinking out a set of exotics for your new 80 simply wasn’t. As long as the acquisition is spread around to different parts of the game, i like the “multiple time gated but short or fun tasks” approach much better than the “Farm an extremely high amount of X, get extremely lucky, or both, then do it again” approach at acquiring the pinnacle of a character’s power.

Laurels, dailies, and stuff like that makes that endgame gear something that becomes a “when” rather than an “if” in terms of stats, while preserving content-specific luxury items as cosmetics. I think that’s a pretty good system.

Monthly. Like I said its a rough estimate. 20 days of 1 laurels + a monthly 10 laurels = 30 laurels for the amulet.

Also, I can’t do 5 events in 3-4 minutes.

Actually I agree with wasabi. Maybe a little longer on events. but not by much if you’re just doing speed events. For example I know where all events are in queensdale. So I can waypoint hop quick. If Barthol event is available the starter is right next to the waypoint. I can /map Barthol event, start it, and hit one of the centaurs when he moves out. As long as there’s another person or two that responds to what I said in map that’s all I need. I can waypoint out and move on to another event – let the other players finish that event off. This can be said for pretty much every event. You don’t have to stay and do the whole event if you know other players will finish it up.

Also, monthly barely factors in at all. The only thing that takes time for monthly assuming you’re doing dailies are the 5 dungeons runs. So do 3 ac paths, 2 cof paths (or more AC) and you’re done. The other aspects of the monthly will easily be accomplished through doing 20 dailies, or pretty close.

- Underwater kills: About 5 minutes… agreed. about 5 minutes just east of queensdale garrison in that lake. kill whites and things along the shoreline too. As long as you kill something while in the water it counts.

- Crafting: 1 minute… the crafting achievement is basically the travel time to get to a station – that’s all. I usually log out in LA so yeah it’d be about a minute for me as the last thing I do.

- Gathering: 5 minutes… or less. This can be tied in with events. Since you’re waypointing and moving around some it’s easy enough to just spot some nodes and gather them as you go.

- Events: about 3-4 minutes total… Already explained this.

- Dodges: 2 minutes… Maybe a little more than this but the troll champ / grub cave in queensdale is great for this. just agro 3 or 4 and move away enough that they’ll all use their ranged attacks at the same time. Dodge through them for 3 or 4 hits, repeat. Also since there’s two events that take place in this cave often, it can be tied in with the events part of dailies.

I logged in for 30 minutes today. I started in LA, chatted with guild for a bit, went to queensdale and rushed daily, went back to LA to craft and do TP stuff, then logged. I usually play a lot more than that but I have other RL stuff to do.

There’s a point where I scratched my head about laurels. We have karma. Lots of it. It serves the same purpose as laurels and it’s already deeply rooted in everything. People have wanted something else to spend it on and this would have been perfect. Just put some high numbers up like 250k for a backpiece. Yes people would have complained about having to grind karma but they do that already. I personally would have told them, “you wanted something to spend it on and I gave you new shinies. Shut up and enjoy. Freakin skritt…”

It is more time consuming for me, I cannot grasp tagging one event mob and running to the next as anything but cheesy gamesmanship. Not against the rules, but for me, doing an event means.. doing it.

I dodge Karka.. in the process of killing them. I guess I don’t see aggroing a pile of noob mobs and dancing about as playing the game either.

I kill barracuda at higher levels for scales. Not many drop, but, at least there is some reason to kill them. White fish in a noob zone, no thanks. Same with gathering in a noob zone, my chars have outgrown green wood and copper.

I don’t TP all over creation. I do events in the areas I am at. Flocks of level 80s utterly devastating events in new player zones give the actual new players very little chance of anything but a bronze level reward.

I don’t see how this is encouraging players to get out. Most don’t. Most run a rote circle of known events/mobs as fast as they can, with no regard to other players that may be in the area.

17 mins to run the new daily. That is pushing it to an extreme. That fast of a completion time is gaming the daily, not playing the game.

This is why token grinds fail. They are a chore, regardless of how little time or effort they take, and usually devolve into a massive pile of “shortcuts” just to get them over with.

My own opinion, YMMV. Interesting to see the speed clear mentality has survived the transition to GW2 intact.

You know, I actually think Mephane is onto a neat idea there. Instead of having a Daily consisting of tasks that must be done each day, have 7 different varying tasks that are each much longer than they are now, but you have one week in which to do them. So instead of the current system, which looks like:

Each day:
- Kill 50 enemies
- Craft 10 items
- Dodge 15 attacks
- Gather 20 ingredients
- Do 5 events
- etc.

which rewards 1 Laurel and the usual rewards, you instead have:

Per week:
- Kill 500 enemies.
- Kill 20 different enemy types.
- Kill 50 Veteran enemies.
- Dodge 50 attacks.
- Craft 50 items.
- Gather 100 ingredients.
- Do 50 events.

Each of those tasks above rewards 1 Laurel and the usual rewards. You can either blaze through them all in a single day (getting 7 rewards at one go), or slowly complete them separately or together over the course of the week. At the end of the week, the player still ends up in the same spot, but they have the option of either getting it all done quickly or at a slower pace, whichever suits their gaming schedule better.

I really enjoy the game. I just like getting the daily out of the way so I don’t forget about it. So I get it done quickly and just move on to doing whatever floats my boat at the time. Dynamic events aren’t something I really like about the game. I’ve probably done 95% of the dynamic events, a lot of them MANY times. Same thing with underwater kills and crafting. I don’t enjoy either so I get them out of the way. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the game.

Heck even daily dodge I probably wouldn’t get done through normal play except on days I do WvW. In PVE my main is a fully ranged thief and I use lifesteal food to sustain life. I don’t need to dodge anything except in rare cases. I’ve got so much sustain with dual pistol spam and high crit that the pitiful damage things do (when they rarely hit me) doesn’t matter.

But none of this matters. My post was just stating that I agreed that daily is very quick, and pointed out examples of how it can be done quickly for those that want to get it out of the way.

Maybe other people want to play normal then when they know they’re going to log soon see what’s left to do if anything. If there’s anything left on daily, maybe they’ll want to rush it and the info I gave are examples of how to do so.

The main aim for dailies is to ensure that there is a constant amount of the playerbase around everyday. Like GW and WoW only implemented dailies when their playerbase starting going south. It’s just a method of ensuring people come back everyday instead of once a week so wanting a weekly instead of a daily will not happen.

Edit: I for one am not a daily gamer either. I try but there are times when I’m just too busy and sleep takes a precedent over getting that one laurel, 5 silver, mystic coin, jug karma and a random black lion item. Wow, that seems like rather a big loss but that’s the attractiveness of coming online and populating a game that needs active numbers to drive sales.

Laurels are simply a new currency we didn’t need, implemented to move the gear grind treadmill out of one dungeon and closer to where players naturally play. There is no inherent need for a new currency; it’s simply Anet making it up as they go. Prior to 11/15 I had tremendous respect for the dev team and especially Colin. After that patch, not so much.

Firstly,
Obviously Laurels are not catered for those who work irregular hours/days of the week. Meaning people like me wont be coming back home daily. But when i get back home, i’ll be off work for 2-3 days. And sadly i cant make up for those days that i’ve missed while i was offshore cause Dailies are Dailies. Missed it and its too bad.

Secondly,
Dodging, i find it ridiculous for Rangers. Why?
Pets <—
Even Karkas will attack my pet. I cant stow my pet during combat.
What is there for me to dodge? Usually i let my pet die but its time wasting compared to any other class. It is even possible for Necro not to summon any pets which would make Dodging a breeze to complete.
WvW? Yes and by the time i found opponents to Dodge, most of the other class had completed their Daily Dodge minutes or hours ago.

Thirdly,
If Ascended Gear could be made ENTIRELY Pve wise during Lost Shore patch which Anet admit it was a mistake, why not made it ENTIRELY Pvp too now after they “realised” it WAS a mistake.

Yes “Realised”. Nuff said.

False, dailies are a big deal since Laurels are the only way to get Ascended Amulets. False, Ascended Gear are a big deal if you want better stats and not just agony resistance.

Before this patch, I would’ve agreed with you because I can get the rewards from dailies from the gemshop, TP, or simply karma farming.

But Laurels are exclusive to only Dailies and dailies only.

In order to powercreep, I am forced to do Dailies for that amulet only. At least Ascended Rings were fine because there are more than one way to gain them.

I have many characters with the way laurels work atm I won’t be getting amulets for all of them. I know that they will convert achievement pts into laurels.

It’s obvious that anet didn’t put the option to obtain amulets(it would be very easy to have amulets purchasable through the vendors) through fractals yet because everyone would already have amulets meaning they don’t have a goal to keep playing. They will most likely add them to fractal vendors after the 20 days since they were released. Also the change to fractals after level 50 also proves that anet wants to restrict how fast players achieve things in this game

You don’t have to stay and do the whole event if you know other players will finish it up.

le sigh How to speed run dynamic events. Whatever floats your boat I guess. If I ever find myself thinking this way, I will realize that I am not enjoying the game, and I will move on.

Didn’t mean it to sound like an attack on you, so if you took it that way, sorry. I just get tired of speed runs in MMO’s. I guess my age is showing.

If you don’t focus so much on the 20 days argument, you could also say that playing sporadically for a month or 3 gives you at least an ascended item. The glass is half full.

I’m casual and this is my perspective. I don’t need my stuff yesterday. Next year would be just fine.

The hell are you doing that makes it take an hour per day for your daily?

Underwater kills: About 5 minutes
Crafting: 1 minute
Gathering: 5 minutes
Events: about 3-4 minutes total
Dodges: 2 minutes

Excuse me for not laying it out better

Oh dear, not this again. Ok man, you were right and I’m sorry. I was wrong to say 1h per day. I’m sure many have worked out their unique spots and pattern that enables them to their dailies in under 30 minutes. Can we discuss about the fact that it still takes 20 days of uninterrupted daily logins which is the actual topic? What’s your Pro and Cons on this?

It does not take uninterrupted logins. You can spread them out. Your “fact” isn’t a real thing, it is an illusion you’re creating for yourself.

As such, discussing pros and cons about an issue that doesn’t exist, is irrelevant.

If you still have an issue about not getting gear yesterday, google content locust and read the first 4 links. There’s a very good reason why laurels are calender gated.

The laurel of the story is:
Do your daily/monthly or you get no gear.

BIS gear gated by content again very poor mechanic.

legendary weapon 15 seconds…..

What i don t like of laurels is the fact i have to spend lot of time to get 2 items i need and i don t have any other way to obtain…

Same problem with ascended rings before this patch.

Also that makes jeweler profession obsolete, and that is too much of a grind for non fractal players….(i play fotm daily and don t have this issue though)

GW2 balance:
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

i’d love to know your secret for completing 5 events in 3 minutes and harvesting 20 resources in 5.

oh wait, there isn’t one.

but OP, mmos have always been about who can play the most wins. you’ll still get your amulet, but it will take longer and i don’t know why that bothers you. there has to be a balance between the people that play 30 min a night and the people that play 8h a day.

i also think this is more casual friendly for slowing it down so much and not having it in fractals, which take longer than the daily most of the time.

Bristleback can’t hit anything? Let’s fix the HP bug instead.

Isn’t a secret because everyone knows how to do that

5 minutes in Orr and you’ll have plenty of mithril // wood + doing a few dense events. You know I’m speaking the truth.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned and I don’t care I’m not reading all the posts to find out.
I agree, making it per account instead of per player seems like Anet is trying to make it take as long as possible to get things with laurels for all your toons. Maybe some of us don’t like farming fractals or grinding for crap. I don’t know who keeps coming up with these ideas for Anet, but from experience with everything implemented in GW2 from events to the personal story, that there has got to be one sadistic son-of-a-b***h running the show.
Anyway, you get laurels for map completion right? So a new player or players that haven’t bothered doing map completions can get theses laurels but those of us that have already done map completions get assed out? WTF is up with that? Is Anet going to make sure players get the laurels for achievements already done? It’s like saying, yeah you’ve done all this work and spent all this time but basically screw you we’re more worried about new players.

I am fully aware that the developers have more ways to obtain items planned out for us in the future. But is this a good start?

I think it’s a good start. It shows the Dev’s are trying to give access to all the items in different ways. This start was with Laurel’s.

Like you said, you know there are more ways planned in the future so I think it’s a good sign that they have at least started it in a way most people can complete fairly easily.

It took me approx. 40mins to do my daily, but I stopped to pick every herb, went out of my way to chop trees and mine ore.

If I just stuck to “do the dailies and get them done” it wouldn’t have taken that long. I was meandering.
