-Armor as such looks great and is great enough to be legendary in my view (nothing will ever be perfect), although this is of course mostly a matter of personal opinion. I am simply a fan of big heavy armors…

- Also like the transformation mechanics, great idea and I would keep it up, since it is a really good way to give legendary armors a certain uniqueness, which they should have (I therefore disagree with those, who would prefer more aura, etc. effects, coz there are already a couple of that, since it would make legendary armor much less unique).
As for the precise transformation of the heavy armor, I find it a bit too much and too thorny. For example, love the first part of the helmet transformation (visor closes), makes the helmet look much cooler, but the bat ears are then too much. Same for the first part of the shoulders transformation, then it gets a bit too thorny.
How about bigger thighs for the heavy armor though

- I do not see issues like everybody will run around with the same armor (also not in raids). Of course there will be always those, who just get it to show off with the entire set, as well as those, who simply like to wear the entire set, but I am pretty sure that ppl will come up with a whole lot of combinations where they just use one or a few parts of the sets. Although info is missing on that point, I am pretty sure you can wear only single parts without any clipping issues or loss of transformation mechanics. I think that the creation of new combinations of legendary with non-legendary pieces is a major thing Anet is counting on.
Other than that, it is simply unavaidable that players will try to get the armor and you will see (parts of) it more often. This will happen with any kind of legendary armor, no matter how it looks like.

- I do understand the critique that the armor will be raid-gaited. This restricts it to one game mode, and as everybody knows, a game mode you have to put a lot of effort into, not only because it is part of the high-end game, but also because the raid community is often – let’s say – very peculiar and not very forgiveable… As someone who likes raids (although I have to think about a new way of how to make my rev useful after the patch), I personally do not have that issue, I even prefer it that way, since I do not need to play much other stuff then. However, I understand other players’ critique.
A more mixed approach that requires achievements in several play modes might be worth a consideration, since it might attract a broader community.
Yet, I guess Anet has more detailed infos about the distribution of players throughout the different play modes and therefore knows more, how to reach the most ppl.

- I also agree with the point, that the utility of legendary armor will be only very limited, if it won’t be accompanied with any kind of useful mechanic to swap runes. If that point is not targeted, legendary armor will become more a matter of prestige and fashion, whereas the change of stats will not be used very much. Players will need to get additional armor sets with the respective stats and runes in order to avoid the constant buying of new runes… Of course, legendary weapons work the same, but you only have to change one or two sigils, the need to change sigils is much less and the loss if you don’t change also much less compared to runes.
This is simply a question of where Anet ultimately sees the main value of legendary armors (utility vs. fashion).

Animated Armor Idea: 10/10
Actual looks of the heavy set demo: 8/10 (Which is great, most armors in the game are 5/10 to me) The design is several levels of quality and taste above Legendary Weapons.
Only shown on human: 3/10 (Stop centering all only around humans, please)
Legendary Armor not being cultural: 0/10 (Seriously, stop)

I love the idea of the animation. It’s sick. The design of the armor is.. terrible. Looks so cheap and gem store-y. If they just went with cleaner looks once.. I so miss GW1 armors.

Exactly this.
Not every armor has to be a spikefest.
Not every armor has to have unique “stuff” to make it super “rad”.

It’s okay for armor to be just that – ARMOR. It’s ok for it to be recognizable as armor.
Like I said before – Human cultural T3 armor is some of the best heavy armor in game – almost all human heavy players have used it extensively because it looks great – it feels great and is a well polished set that doesn’t scream “i’m 13 and I like SUPER EXTREME STUFF”.

Not everything has to be a big spikey detail-filled set, no.

But I’m not sure how you’d get a meaningful animated transformation on a more “basic” armor set. If the whole point is being minimalistic and realistic, then what kind of animations could you really have? For such animations to have a large visible impact, it almost seems like you need a lot of details and over-the-top modelling.

I agree and don’t agree with you. Animation can still be implemented without adding spikes and funny ears to things. The visor animation for example is fine.
So are some of the others.

Appearance 4/10: It’s like I’m staring at an Adventure Quest monster or some kind of Transformer for the latter; something a pre-teen might find appealing due to the plethora of overly obnoxious spikes ANet seems to always enjoy plastering onto either the shoulders and/or chausses/tassets (especially the chausses because I feel like it’s presented as a mirror Mistward leg armor lazy feature). Generic western game armor design overall. There’s so many freelance artists out there who’s passion is creating absolutely epic, draw-dropping armor concepts with unique layers/embroidery yet this design feels like a cheap action figure out of a cereal packet. I would’ve suggested browsing the web a bit more and/or digging into some old-school games for more inspiration.

I had to quote this – it really really sums up the design really really well.

All of the sets aren’t even ready 1 year after HoT release and almost 2 years after expansion announcement? That’s terrible. I think the set looks cool, but it means that Legendary Armor which was a bullet point for the sale of the expansion wasnt even being worked on when they released HoT. They were 100% willing to take your money early for a digital expansion and put Legendary Armor on as a highlight and it wasn’t even being worked on.

Yuck.

I don’t want to detract from the work of the artists and all the other people working on this stuff. I think it’s really cool. Heck, I think that work is really cool even when I don’t like it.

The people I take umbrage with are the ones playing a shell game with peoples money and not releasing this stuff in a timely fashion. It’s unacceptable.

Lets be fair here: Anet is already struggling to deliver one three armor sets (light, medium, heavy) and adjusting them for each race + both genders. What do you think would happen if they had to make an unique design for each race + gender + armor weight? Those would never see the light of the day.

Well, to be totally fair, it’s impossible that it’s actually taken them this long just to model the three sets of armor, that would represent a huge malfeasance on the part of the design team to waste thousands of man-hours on so little. What likely held up the works was the technology involved in making the armor capable of being animated, and then actually implementing those animations. The underpinnings of the armor probably took the bulk of the time. Once those underpinnings are in place, designing and modeling the actual armor itself should be fairly straightforward.

Also on a side note, before this kind of set design, the AP set was like the best set to go for and it also showed status, pride, dedication, investment. Now with the release of this kind of armors, the AP set is completely redundant, unrewarding and completely misses the mark on what it’s supposed to be..and that’s “the best thing out there to RIGHTFULLY brag about and show that you literally did everything this game has to offer for multiple years”. That’s sad. I wonder how many of u will ever get to have 30-35k AP before you quit this game, or in how many years. And no, i am not QQing because i might have the set done. I am actually 1k behind getting the pants, so i am still far away from finishing it considering they added a backpack also.

Hell..even some BL skins look better then what should be the testament of your playtime in GW2…stuff you buy instantly from the gemshop with close to no effort at all besides a few clicks.

Honestly it would probably be easier to make a unique set for each race and cater each set to that specific race than to ensure that 1 set works without clipping on all races.

That said I do not ever want a legendary tied to a specific race. That is a bad idea. You shouldn’t be forced to play a certain race to equip the legendary armor you want

I guess those are fair points, but I still fear it’d take them a good amount of time. On the other hand, making them cultural could possibly sort out some issues they’d otherwise have. However, in the case of cultural armor they’d either have to massively cut down the price for one set or let you unlock all sets of one weight class with one craft, then let you pick the race you want. That would likely cause issues too.

I agree they will need to rework the AP armors. They take much more effort than the legendary armor and should be at least on par in terms of looks and effects if not even be a quality level above legendary (such as mythic or apex maybe)

I also love the idea. was not expecting it to be transformesque.

I hate the fact the neck is totally exposed though. This is something that alot of armour sets in this game have….a totally exposed neck.

Some chain mail or some kind of covering is needed for the neck….
Why would you even make a giant hulking mass of armour and then leave one, if not thee, most vital human spot completely open? It just screams "shoot me in the neck with an arrow please, or decapitate me with a farmer’s pitch fork…..best armour ever made taken out by a farmer….pro.

I’ll likely be using it without the helm on is all I can say…..if I can ever afford it, i doubt ill ever even get it to begin with.

I have fun raiding. I enjoyed doing it before we had the armor. I’ll do it afterwards too.

You can get the armor without raiding – you can buy clears. It’s not that hard.

No you can’t – if raid parties won’t take a good player who doesn’t use the exact special snowflake meta build of the month then I doubt the chances of a low contribution character just there for rewards will get to go along either.

Or you can do this – find like minded friend and do Escort together with them. It will be slow but W3 Encounter 1 has no timer – so technically you don’t need meta builds or great plays. Slow and steady wins the race.

Has everyone forgotten that VG was cleared in greens and there was just recently a 3man Clear? Granted these were done by very skilled players but it shows that player skill, dps rotations, and build/comp that work well together is more important than gear. Gear just increases the margin for error…which is a good thing too but not everything by no means

You can only get that skill in raid fights by actually practicing them. If you want to practice them, you will have to start with an optimal comp and with optimal gear setups, since you will need every advantage until you get the hang of it. This means that for the majority of the playerbase, who haven’t done much raiding, these kind of clears are not relevant at all.

After all, the players who 3-manned VG weren’t even close to that capability when they did the fight for the first time. Also, with the nerfs since then, it might not be possible to 3-man VG anymore.

It’s very clear that regarding most mmo’s, the developers aren’t in touch with a majority of their playerbase. Dev’s implement things in a game that they think is what players want, or would find good, but in reality they have no clue whatsoever what a majority thinks.

All they have to go on is some numbers (if they have those) and what players are saying on forums or reddit. And that is never a good idea since you’ll be listening to a minority.

Just look at The Division, an mmo based shooter. They made huge mistakes and that playerbase has gone down to the point that if it were the same here, there’d be no more Gw2. Fortunately for gw, there’s a more loyal playerbase and more ‘diversity’.

Raiding was introduced because someone suggested it and players here asked for it. Now that it’s there, players complain it’s not worth it or it’s not worth the trouble. Only a minority really enjoys it, and that’s good for them, but for most, raiding isn’t even an option because of various reasons : lack of time, lack of interest, lack of skill….whatever the reason.

I got several pre’s (5) over a period of 3 months or so. Did i make a legendary ? No, i did not. Imo, it wasn’t worth the effort compared to getting ascended, and there was no need for it to be able to play content.

This same reasoning goes for legendary armor. You have to ask yourself that and while you’re at it, consider it as a ‘niche’. Something that might or might not look good, but is , in fact, completely useless for most players.

By the time one might craft/get a legendary armor piece, you could have done a lot of other things that you wouldn’t otherwise consider doing. (like finally finishing all fractal levels, or completing that one rare collection…)

I’d say if you want the gear, and you enjoy raids, go for it. If not, pass it over, and think about this for a second :

*The design team and dev’s worked so hard and long to create legendary armor…for only a handful of people. It’s like creating a Vincent van Gogh painting and having only 5 people look at it twice and sayig ‘ooh, that’s nice.’ *

What a waste.

Agreed, they need to work on ways to open these up to a larger portion of the playerbase, so that more players can actually enjoy it. There is no point to designing content that only a tiny amount of players can benefit from.

So I spent most of my game time this weekend looking for a Raid group without success. I tried both the LFG and /w several known PvE guilds. No one would take me because of my lack in Raid experience. The only groups posting in LFG were Raid spot sellers, and a very rare occasional group that was looking for only experienced Raiders. I even politely asked if I could join one, only to be laughed at.

Next, I tried to organize a Raid beginners squad, which sadly didn’t even get to set foot in the Raid due to a lack of willing participants.

Finally out of frustration on Sunday night, I asked a couple of the Raid sellers how much they charged for help. The response I got was 150-300g, for a single boss, depending on the difficulty.

I’ll keep trying, but this definitely isn’t as easy as people think it is.
