Many players are concerned and upset over the malfunctioning DR, the lack of communication on the matter, and how DR is even supposed to function. In an attempt to facilitate some structured communication, I’m listing all the major questions that I am aware of. Please feel free to reply to this thread with questions I’m missing.

  • Is the company aware that DR is malfunctioning to the point that players are reporting reduced rewards before they can finish a single DE chain?
  • Is the DR meant for bots, and unintentionally affecting players who are legitimately farming?
  • Until now many of us have assumed that the ability to log in and out to reset the DR (for karma, at least) was meant for players to sort of, “prove they are human”. Now this is gone. What does this change represent? Why was such a huge change not in the patch notes?
  • Is it intentional that we get reduced karma rewards part way through karma boosters?

Thanks for the assistance, everyone. I’m sure we can have a respectful dialogue that soothes everyone’s concerns and gets the information we need out to the players and patrons.

I just love doing storyline instances and seeing the content has been disable just because I killed a grub. </sarcasm> I agree in theory that something has to be done about bots, but clearly the implementation of current detriments impact alot more than those botting. This needs to be fixed soon. It starts with grubs, what next? What after that?

You should also add the fact that DR is account bound, so playing across multiple characters and doing the same events or dungeons will also cause you to hit diminishing returns.

They are no longer malfunctioning, a simple search in the patch notes and in the dungeon forums would tell you this.

I think OP was looking for a dialogue with ANET. The links you have provided either dont answer the questions, or are filled with speculation and hyperbole from players. Good effort though.

I would like to hear answers from ANET about this as well.

2 weeks after implementation and still not an official word about it. Good chance we still wont hear anything on it. Would appear ANET is either hiding this from the player base or ashamed to deal with it. Perhaps those that are negatively impacted by the DR mechanics should consider organizing outside of the GW2 forums and then head over to the BBB to seek a resolution.

I would sometimes hit the karma DR multiple times in on hour, and other times not hit it once in an hour. Always taking the same path at different speeds. I was netting 12-14k karma per hour.

As of the latest patch this is impossible due to the DR being un-resettable and karma boosters are worthless. The effective time to acquire a legendary has been lengthened significantly. Grinders/farmers are being punished for their playstyle rather than encouraged to play differently. Right now we have no information from Arenanet on their goals with this decision, only speculation.

I hopped in game early this morning to farm out some karma for the armor set. I was hitting 5 different events and having a good time even though I was farming when suddenly I start getting almost no loot from drops and stopped when one event gave me only 72 karma for gold participation.

I was on my 2nd karma booster with still about 30 min left on it. Not wanting to waste the booster that I bought (which have been getting more expensive with the gold to gems conversion) I just logged out of the game.

If they don’t want us to farm they need to lower the prices on… well everything. This game is a grind. Yes the only stuff you really need to grind for is aesthetics but the amount of karma, dungeon tokens, gold needed for the endgame gear is something that you have to invest a lot of time grinding to get.

The way karma DR has been implemented has made me a very angry customer. I am not an avid forum poster, but I feel the strong need to express my dissatisfaction. Apologies to sanadin as I do not want to derail your thread, but this seems a good place to write my thoughts.

Up until this point there have been many flaws in the game, but there was nothing that could not be waited out or played around: for instance the nonfunctional trading post for weeks on end, broken skill points (grab them on a server reset!), broken events, etc. For the goals I had in mind for this game though, namely finishing a legendary, the karma DR really just feels like a screw you from Anet. Considering the fact that I liberally bought gems for boosts, bag space on my main and alts, bank space, etc., to support this company makes me feel this way much more so.

I cannot see how any individuals karma farming sessions negatively impact anyone else’s play experience; hence, the motivation behind this system eludes me. To be honest, if I did not want Twilight I would not be farming karma at all and just enjoying my time in WvW (which while it has been derided by some, I find to be quite fun).

Compared to the above example of 12-14k (which is pretty intense!), I was going at a rate of about 10-12k per hour in Cursed Shore, and had farmed about 300k karma in total for my legendary as of the patch last night. I estimated that I would need about 80 more hours of farming karma (~2 weeks of a full time job!) to obtain the amount of obsidian shards needed for mystic clovers and gifts. Since I typically had to relog after 40 minutes of farming to reset my DR pre-patch, I do not know how I will actually meet my goals. I am hoping that some people will come up with a creative way around this block, but only time will tell.

The only reasoning behind their actions that I can fathom is that they may want to slow down the rate at which people are obtaining legendaries. From my own experiences, I farmed a Thunderfury in vanilla WoW where I had the help of my whole guild. That was a major farm. For Twilight, the fact that I am working on it solo makes me feel the amount of effort is pretty comparable.

It started from the patch last night. Logging out no longer resets karma debuff, to people who aren’t experiencing it – they either aren’t doing chain events or taking big, big breaks in between DE’s.

Don’t worry good sir Odinson, soon you’ll be at 12 karma / gold

As far as I can tell it’s always been there, but most people never realized how many events there were until recently, so they never did events fast enough to reach the cap.

From my experience, doing about16 or more events per hour is enough to trigger the cap, although others have reported the cap activating much sooner.

Dear ArenaNet.

It takes you you less than an hour to congratulate someone when they managed to get roughly 2million karma in 26 days, which adds up to 76k karma per day.

It has been 9 days since people have been unable to get more than 5k karma per day due to DR stopping all karma gain, and 2 days since people have been able to get around the “bot check” by reloggging, why has there not been a response to this?

I have not logged in – in over a week because of these questions. I get that ANet probably doesn’t want to “go there” because it would be giving information to the people running the bots, but I’m sorry – you can’t attempt to damage control this by ignoring people who actually play the game.

I was willing to live with certain bits of the game – knowing that they would work on them over time. The game was playable. But the DR Code, bug – whatever we’re calling it, has made it pointless for me to spend time in this game.

You can’t cap Karma like this and keep vendor karma rates as high as they are and expect people to sit by and take it. You can’t make a crafting system that takes a large amount of resources and then cap people’s accounts after less than an hour of “normal” or “typical” gameplay.

Why do I want to play a game that gets me nothing but porous bone 22 hours out of the day?

I’m not even talking about farming! I’m talking about playing…the…game and having my time essentially limited because of introduced code meant to affect botters.

It has never just affected botters.

The silence, really is deafening.

Each day I come back here, read the boards and then go play something else…this after I’ve invested money the game, the upgrade and gems.

I can’t recall any other “F2P” game that caps rewards, items, resources like this one does…but if this is how it’s going to be for the longterm please let us know.

QFT

I also would like Anet to address this problem!
Regular players are being punished for playing out events.
I’m a very unhappy customer and feel like I’m being punished by this DR system.

Why would you make end-game evolve around events and the meta game for collecting and gaining certain items such a grind and then within one month try to implement this DR system which totally goes against the core design of the game.

Right now you have one level 80 zone and that is a major source of the problem.
Cursed Shore is very very crowded and full out to the brim with people trying to do events and get karma.
The zerg can be so bad it can make the invisible mob/npc bug happen and this a very game breaking bug.

Please Anet think over what you’re doing and look at how you designed GW2…

@Amiron
Some of us don’t have much time to play and I feel we are being hit the most, since ArenaNet wants us to keep moving and changing areas and doing different stuff they are basically going against their manifesto, they are not letting us play the way we want.

DR during DEs is the worst offender here IMO, Dungeons are for social people, DEs are for everyone, what are we supposed to do on end game? Grind dungeons or grind DEs and we are punished on both by DR but the DE-DR is just out of this world, after some 20 or 30 minutes it makes it unplayable so our options are to move to another zone, which can be time consuming or gold consuming, both of which impact more those of us with not much time to play (1 hour or so a day), if I wanted the whole hour just to farm DEs (which isn’t incredibly fun) I want to be able to do so.

Please ArenaNet, you are shooting yourself on the foot here, not the botters, they have infinite time to think of ways to improve the botting, so if you keep ruining parts of the game just to get the botters what is going to happen when you finally get rid of botters? You’ll have an ugly broken game with a bad reputation (read all of the forum posts regarding DR, it’s making players leave the game).

I’d like to suggest a kind of daily achievement that rewards Karma based on level, so a level 80 character could get a big boost in karma for doing stuff daily, that way us casual players can have something to look up to every day, and have a chance at getting exotic and legendary items.

When you have between two options being, player leaves the game because he got karma too fast and thinks he has nothing else to do now; and a second option in which player leaves the game because he will never get a shot at getting top tier stuff because we keep breaking the game; Which do you think will be more detrimental in the long run? Stop breaking such a wonderful game, DR is killing it, be sure of it.

I think the devs know what’s happening, many lockdowns and what not, but this “discussion” is only going to see results next week or something, where a new patch comes in.

I think the more vocal ones are the people who are willing to spend money on karma boosters and finding out that it’s curbed to bits for ORR farms. I obviously heard stuff about how other MMOs are grindy and things, and I guess ANet is no exception despite the claims.

Everyone,

Thank you so much for your contribution to the thread. I will parse this thread today and add questions to my original post for simplicities sake. Please continue posting your questions and concerns as new replies in this thread.

I don’t think I need to tell any of you here that this is a very important matter. ArenaNet is a fantastic company with outstanding talent and vision, but they can’t do it all themselves. They need us, the players, to be clear and honest about how much this is hurting us.

We are not okay with a system that punishes the most dedicated and tenacious players, a system that forces us to ignore our outstanding qualities and move through the world at the same pace as the listless. These are false shackles that I cannot believe represents the superb vision for Guild Wars 2.

I see my frustration and sense of betrayal reflected in countless posts on every forum. We fell in love with this game, and the spectacular vision ArenaNet presented. A game and vision with so much greatness and promise of playing how you want to play. We let ourselves become lost in this promise and this beautiful world and our passion for our goals – and all for good reason, ArenaNet has created something irrefutably worthwhile.

Thank you, ArenaNet, for giving this matter the attention it deserves. You have my continued admiration and patronage.

I’m sorry that the outcry across the forums and numerous examples aren’t enough evidence for you. I’m not sure what motivates your disbelief in your fellow players. I speculate that the reason you have not received photo or video evidence is because someone who is dealing with the frustration of this issue is likely not in the mood to go out of his or her way for someone with your attitude. Moreover, the developers have access to the DR logic, database and logs, which combined with detailed user accounts is likely enough information to work with.

I respectfully request that we keep this thread to it’s original purpose and avoid potentially derailing posts that are accusing players of lying or abusing the game.

There are accounts of players hitting the DR without leaving an event early. More importantly, though, no where has ArenaNet said it was wrong to leave an event early. If that was the case they would’ve coded it to only award gold after a player stays until the end of the event, rather than retroactively implementing a punishment system without explaining why.

Cursed shore have 3 main events, all are chain. We can’t farm. That’s ok, i hate that. But 2 of 3 world events were BUGGED. But yes.. “Patch note: we implement the DR” “Patch note: we fix the DR” “Patch note: we improve the DR” meanwhile cursed shore is unplayable.

What numerous examples? There has been two. One, people claiming that DR hit them after 2-3 fresh events, which sounds like a bug. Two, people getting hit after bunnyhopping from event to event without contributing to any one of them and not doing anything in between, which is the system working as intended. I’ve yet to see an example where a player would be “punished” for event completions.

Less patos, more facts.

No one is punishing you nor putting shackes on you, thats just a twisted sentence that does not actually contain any information and makes the problem seem bigger then it really is.

You are not being brought down to the “listlesss” level (lol), you are being curbed for trying to game one of the key GW2 features, the get rewards without competing for them system.

Finding loopholes in the system and using them to your advantage in a way that does not help anyone but you should and is punished. It is your right to feel “punished” by this, but you are literally suggesting that finding unintended loopholes for speedfarming makes you “better” then anyone who sticks out through an event chain beginning to start without tagging anything in between.

Game fairness dicates differently, like it or not.

Again with the patos. I find the same posts to be either reports of a bug (if true) or people confirming that the DR is working at intended. Tagging DE’s and running off for the next one to maximize karma gain without any real contribution is not it.

“Play the game as you want” does not mean “abuse loopholes in the system and use them to gain an unintended advantage”. No game does that, unless finding such loopholes is the object of said game.

I respectfully request that we keep this thread to it’s original purpose and avoid potentially derailing posts that are accusing players of lying or abusing the game.

Yes, let’s not point out the obvious holes and fallacies in other peoples statements and pretend they are not there. That is not how discussions work. I have not seen any real flame in the topics I’ve tried and contribute too yet, but if someone is trying to game the DE system he will be called on it.

Sanadin kinda sums it up.

The way it APPEARS right now, based on gameplay experience and testing, that the following APPEAR to be true:

-DR kicks in if you kill a number of mobs in too short a period of time. Anywhere. Period.
-A couple AOE waves seem sufficient in some circumstances to cause this
-Unline previous statements, the type of mob appears to have no affect. You get it for killing ANY combination of mobs, not farming the same one over and over.
-Long explorable dungeon runs suck because DR kicks in way before the dungeon is over.
-This is affecting money, loot, and karma.
-Due to the above, any gameplay above 30-60 mintues appears to be pointless.
-Logging out for a 30-40 minute period does not appear to reset DR.

So my questions to Anet:

1) Is DR intended as a anti-bot measure?
2) If so, do you feel it has had any success?
3) Again if so, has that success been worth the aggravation to players?
4) Are the above DR issues I listed intentional?
5) Why?
6) What incentive for players is there to do any content that takes more than an hour or so, heck often les, if these are intentional?
7) If these changes are NOT anti-bot measures, why were they implemented?
8) If these changes are not as intended, what is the plan (loosely) to correct them? And when can we start seeing real change?

I have yet to be hit by any DR, ever. I play naturally, wandering from place to place doing hearts and zone completion and doing events when I see them. I don’t use boosters or magic find, in case that has an effect.

Here’s the question though: has anyone seriously gathered data on this? How many events in what time frame are needed to trigger it? How big is the reduction? Does doing different events or repeating the same one matter? Until someone collects some real info, everything is just whining and speculation.

The DR should only happen from doing the same event multiple times in a row. Doing event chains or completely different events should never hit DR.

I have tried.
I have looked at DR on items and DR on Karma. I found DR to exist on items, but no DR to exist on Karma from Events.
I tested bases on doing as many of said in 1 hour of gameplay.
I kept all my screen shots as evidence. I have yet to see anyone produce any evidence to show DR on Karma

You’re intentionally being divisive and insulting, please stop. This thread is meant to convey legitimate concerns, questions and examples to the development team. No one is asking you to agree with us or play the way we do, and no one has to prove anything to you. This is the last time I will reply to you.

I truly don’t understand why or how people can defend this? And, yes.. it seems like you get hit harder the more magic find you have.

For me at least, it’s not defending it. I am simply stating I have not experienced it, and every time I ask someone to show me a video of an example, they don’t answer. So, I understandably have a hard time believing that people being affected a truly playing “normally”.

Prove me wrong.

Its hard to do video proof, as videos take up way more memory space than a simple picture (those are out there btw, even on this forum, you just have to look).

I have looked. Perhaps my search skills are lacking. If you could give me a link to one, that’s be awesome! thanks.

I’m still amazed that people think the DR system is for botters. That makes no sense, not even as a kind of temporary stop-gap. Gold farmers have no interest in events (the gold income is equal to 1 green weapon), and players botting for themselves (e.g. a player botting events in order to farm karma) will eventually be banned – and in the meantime will gain nothing that isn’t account-/soulbound.

The DR system is clearly intended for players. There are many players who are exceedingly good at generating karma and XP or doing dungeons etc., and the DR system is put in place to cap out their effectiveness.

Instead of talking about botters, this discussion should focus more on the topic of whether or not it’s reasonable to diminish the rewards of those who are simply better at the game.

It’s not enough for two reasons:

First, with someone describing what they have run into, it’s just anecdotal. There is no review of the evidence. Second, I have not run into the issue, and I truly, honestly would just like to know what’s different about how you all are playing the game, and how I am. That’s all.

Why is it so much to ask for video evidence that can be reviewed and discussed?
