Has anyone else noticed that if you don’t hit a champion fast enough you wont be eligible for loot?

I decided to test the theory on my elementalist. I found that if I throw a few fireballs at the very beginning of the spawn I will tag loot, even though I’ve done less than 20k dmg. But if I wait then use frostbow, meteor shower and my arcane skills, I can do far more damage however I don’t get any loot from the champion.

This only seems to happen when the zerg is very large (world boss train).. I wonder if there’s a limited number of “spots” on a mobs tag table or something.. like less than the map cap?

Anyone else notice this?

That’s one of the posts I’ve made in the Bugs forum about it. There’s another back a few months too. So far, no red name has deigned to reply to it, all the responses I’ve been able to get are either people like who you’ve come to the same conclusion themselves, or people who deny there’s a problem and claim it’s just not enough damage being done.

I’m guessing that the issue is pretty deeply coded into the game, such that it wouldn’t be easy to fix, but it would still be nice to hear confirmation of that and whether or not a fix will be in the works or not.

It’s not dependent on if you hit or not or when you hit, but rather how much damage you do. In large zergs this can be problematic since it can be hard to do sufficient damage if you have a hoard of other people burning the champs down in seconds.

You may or may not be correct but I’ve hit substantially for as much damage as i can do (from beginning to when the champ dies) and still not gotten the loot bag drop. More accurately put Sometimes you get it and sometimes you don’t. This leaves you scratching your head as to why.

it’s not really the world bosses it’s the mobs. take the turret defense events on tequatl for instance…if you run around one hitting (early shots) mobs you get credit for kills. if you jump in on mobs late you don’t get credit. same thing is in effect for mobs on cursed shore etc..

so it makes you change your playstyle (not for the better), .instead of focusing on a vet i’m going to try and first hit as many creatures as i can then go back to vet. first hit for little damage trumps later hit for massive damage almost every time.

Try it out on the champion husks on the great jungle worm pre-event on a full map. Hit two of them quickly and do 20k damage at least, you’ll get credit. Wait on the third and do 40k+ damage, which is double what you’ve done on the other two, and you wont get credit.

I understand damage threshold for loot. I also understand how quickly a mob can be burned down before you’re able to get your threshold’s worth of damage done. That’s not what I’m talking about.

This is only from my own observations but I think the amount of damage you do determines the quality of the drops, while being the first players to tag the mob determines whether you get the drops at all. For example, you are the first to tag one of the rock dog champs during Ulgoth event. You’re qualified for the champ bag, but you didn’t deal enough damage afterwards, so you only get the masterwork bag instead of exotic. It explains why my ranger gets more green champ bags than my ele (even though he can tag everything as soon as they spawn with traps) because his dps isn’t as high as hers.

I am not saying you’re wrong but I haven’t found it to be true consistantly.

I don’t think the quality of the bag you get is based on the damage you do. The rarity is dependent upon your personal level, the level of the champion, and a bit of RNG. For example: If you kill a champion in Fireheart Rise, you’ll get an exotic champ bag no matter what (assuming you’re of the appropriate level for the zone and get loot credit). If, however, you’re level 80 and go to Great Jungle Wurm, you have a chance of getting Basic OR Exotic from the various champs that spawn during the pre-events.

I have never actually had this issue. The only time I would get no loot is if I am coming in at the very last sliver of health. I believe the loot eligibility is determined on a threshold of damage dealt. You just need to put in enough damage. If you’re just going to hop as an Ele this is absurdly easy assuming you’re not running completely clownshoes gear.

Drop a few autos, a Lava Font or even a Meteor Shower if you like.

Huh, I hadn’t considered the mobs’ level. Maybe you’re right. I always get exotic bags from champs in Frostgorge regardless of my dps. I still encounter the same problem as OP, though. Sometimes I get no champ bags even after doing a ton of damage. Ulgoth for example, drops nothing if I don’t tag him as soon as he comes out of invulnerability.

Its about who does damage early. Only around 50 people can get credit for a kill. If you are in a party it is enough if one person tags early, because it constributes for the whole group.
The damage you do is almost meaningless as long as it meets a unknown but very small treshold. If you are grouped up even hitting for 0 (eg if the target is using endure pain in WvW) is enough.
