Losing track of cursor + terrible tab targeting
I lose my cursor consantly in combat, even solo, if I’m up against multiple enemies. I always just chalked it up to my own fault, my own lack of focus on keeping track of the cursor, but if its something that can be improved within the UI itself I’d certainly be in favor of that. Maybe its not entirely my fault (though I’m sure its at least partly).
I always lose track of my cursor when I play, and I always thought it was my mouse or me not paying attention. I had no idea this was a problem other people were having as well.
SoR
I have problems with my cursor during fast and furious combat, as well. I wasn’t sure if I just lost track of it, or if it disappeared, or what the deal was.
I’d also like to say that anything to help with seeing what’s lootable would be helpful. Even if it meant holding CTRL to get some sort of looting outline, it would be nice.

Took the words out of my mouth. Great thread hope Anet sees this.
Yes please. Interface option to increase cursor size would be great. I’d ideally like it to change colour to red when I’m combat and get about 3x the size.
Also an option to stop it vanishing when I’m holding down the buttons.
Would make my Engineer much more effective with grenades!
Hahaha, I have the same issues in messy combat as well with the cursor. I’ve just resorted to going through my usual skill methods while randomly dodging and hope I’m hitting something that is personally targeting me because I’ve also had problems with tab.
this game totally needs swtor-style loot beams. it was a great (and perhaps the only) gameplay innovation.
yep same here, and the auto target seems a little shakey. A lot of times your character will auto target another target by accident, and not stay on the beastie that is eating your face off. then what happens is if you use a throw weapon on the beastie that is eating your face off to slow it, you end up pulling another beastie by accident, now you have two on you instead of one.
That’s why I have two keys for targeting. One for closest target, and one for next target in cycle. This way I can swap between targets when it’s not too crazy, and still target the nearest threat if the fight becomes unreadable.
About the cursor…. I lose it all the time too T_T
Most of the time, I hold down right click to move my camera around, and turn my character since I use left and right to strafe. But the trouble is, cursor is small and discrete, and I often lose track of it.
I would love to be able to change cursor shape/size/colour.
I’ve been thinking this but have never posted anything about it on the forums so I’ll just put it here. The TAB targeting in this game is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Why it doesn’t cycle from nearest to farthest intuitively I don’t understand. It’s an area that they need to do some work but honestly, with the way the issues in this game are being handled I don’t see it getting love for a long long time. In larger battles, especially in WvW and whatnot, I would also love an option to skip pets from the tab target options, thus making it to where I need to click them to target. (that’s just a personal thing though)

I have that too… yet when I was facing the Claw of Jormag this weekend, I simply couldn’t target it. I had to walk a way back, before I saw the location where I could target and only then did the closest target button work. I was out of reach by then, though… (I couldn’t look up when I was close to him, as the camera wouldn’t go down further…)
I especially love it when the tab targeting chooses to target an NPC mob far off in the distance instead of one of the 5 enemy players right in front of me.
My mouse is always getting lost as well.
Hmm, I’ve never had issues with losing the cursor. I run in windowed fullscreen @ 1920×1080p, and my mouse is set at 1500 DPI. Though I often hold down right click while in combat, as to have the camera follow my character, so I often don’t see the cursor much when in combat.
In regards to tab targeting – meh, it’s not that great, but I usually don’t notice it. I sometimes have to click on the mob I want to target due to the poor quality of tab targeting, but usually I don’t have to tab target and facing them w/ auto targeting will target that mob. Usually.
I wish it better prioritized mobs. It shouldn’t be targeted mobs that are off screen and it should not be targeting friendly mobs if there are currently mobs aggroing me, i.e. red-named. Mobs with lower HP and/or are more of a threat to me should be prioritized. Mobs that are closer to me should be prioritized.
On a similar but slightly different note, Shift+Tab and similar Shift+X hotkeys makes me dodge since shift is my dodge key – this is an annoying bug that’s been in there since BWE’s and was fixed for abilities, i.e. 1-0, but not much else. I suppose I should rebind shift+tab…
This game really does have some of the worst Tab target functionality I’ve seen in a modern MMO. I’ve targeted stuff that is almost entirely out of screen space when there are 6-10 monsters directly in front of my character and in the center of screen space.
There is no excuse for Tab targeting to not have center screen space prioritization at a minimum. I don’t need to target the stupid thing that is behind my character out of LOS when there is something in the middle of my screen that is in LOS of my character.
Funny, I don’t mind the tab targeting much myself but losing track of my mouse cursor happens often and is very very annoying when you use ground targeting skills with the fast cast ground target mode.
Totally agree with you for the both problems mentioned!! Anet give us an answer
Yeah i had to manually set C for “target closest” weird how its not the default since it was the default in GW1, even still my target randomly drops for no reason even when my hands are off the keyboard/mouse just auto attacking a champ that is standing still.
Yes i have this issue SOOOOO much not only cant you see your mouse but it also effect the control of your character, Hold down right mouse button to turn but it doesn’t register the clicking or something as your mouse cursor has disappeared. Not only that but a gold cursor the blend in with EVERYTHING lol come on Anet. I think there a simple solution for it.. well at least for losing cursor not sure about the turning.. Add an option in the menu for Cursor tracking just makes a trail behind your cursor. There was this great add on for WoW i used that did this and it was bar far one of the best addons i had!
I see all these posts are recent too guess a lot of people are finally getting sick of this posting on the forums hoping Anet will fix it.. Lets All Hope.. Don’t get your hopes up to high though doubt anything will be done.
I lose my cursor often too in battle
Another ‘cursor loser’ here
I think that it often happens when things get very busy on-screen. Makes things particularly difficult in games where it’s a really good idea to know where the cursor is, e.g. Magicka, Torchlight. I don’t find that it affects GW2 too badly though; I still lose the cursor but I don’t rely on it all that much (I find the camera’s behaviour to be far more problematic in this game).

Tab targeting mobs definately needs to be worked on! Enuf said
I’m so glad I’m not the only one with this problem. I try to remember to position the cursor over my head so I always know where it is when I cast and move but when things get hectic it’s hard to keep track of. Tab-targeting is really something awful, too.
Yes, experienced all these issues. It’s especially annoying during a boss fight; usually have to use the select target feature just to quickly target back to the boss since tab-target cycling is unreliable.
Thank God I’m not the only one. I don’t use my cursor an awful lot in combat, but considering I have a hard time even seeing my AOE rings in a big battle (or, hell, even a medium-sized battle in PVE) then there’s definitely something wrong here. I’d love to use autocast setting so I don’t have to position my aoe rings, but considering that 75% of the time I can’t even find my cursor on the screen, that’s virtually impossible. (and it’s not an FPS/graphics issue for me as I’m running a great system on high settings.)
I have this especially in dungeons. It seems that when I cast certain spells with my mesmer especially I lose my target and tabbing makes no sense. Why would it choose further targets before closer ones? Very odd indeed.
For once I’d like to see a game where if I tab-target it will actually select the first person I’m looking at.
Is it so hard to code something that starts at 0 degrees and scans to 90 degrees on either side? Priority targets start at 0 degrees.
I don’t lose my cursor though, then again I hold both mouse buttons or just hold Rclick.
I lose my target too – @1080P resolution, and probably combined with being fairly close to a 41" TV. I would love for some way to increase the size, make the color more bold, or perhaps have an animation on it that could help keep it visible.
this game totally needs swtor-style loot beams. it was a great (and perhaps the only) gameplay innovation.
Even color coded beams like in tor that allowed you to get a hint of the quality of the lootible before you pick it up. Yellow beam of course meant rare or quest items.
It’s also interesting that losing cursor is such a wide spread problem.
yeah, losing track of my cursor is terrible when I’m slinging nades. We could definitely use something more visible.l
I also lose my cursor sometimes… which is why I prefer to stick to builds with the least ground targeting possible.
Always thought the tab targeting was a bit whacky, grabbing mobs out of view when it should target what if right in front of me. After years of WOW, I just never noticed the wrong targets ever getting targeted. In GW2 I noticed it within minutes. Yes, I know the difference between closest and next target=)
Not only does my mouse cursor get lost, it doesn’t always target an enemy when I try to right-click in combat. Many times I have to use tab for it to target the correct (or any) enemy. Frustrating. I have a wired mouse, so it’s not a mouse battery issue.
Using Yojack’s build: Sword/Warhorn | Rifle
Gate of Madness Black Fade [BF]
I have always had a problem with losing the cursor, even in GW1.
Different computers, different OS, different video cards, but still lost it all the same.
Group of mobs is right in front of me. Hit TAB. Target mob five miles away.
Buh?
Love this game but I feel this needs to be this looked into.
Yes I agree. I use fast ground targeting and bewilder at where the mouse ends up at times when I try to keep it near the center but simply lose track even when keeping an eye on it.
Too much effect wise on the screen- that needs to be toned way way way down and if there are legendaries – turn them off sad to say this but they make an even bigger mess of a bad situation.
Tab Target is horrible and needs a huge revamp. It is on par with Tor and that is saying something.
Thing I really notice is switching targets without hitting a command to do so. The game does it. I have it set up as auto targeting, if you turn that off things get even more wonky.
Tab targeting gets me in trouble in pve, but in pvp it gets me to learn other classes… let me explain:
I tab target every type of turret in the game before the actual engineer, which helps a lot learning the finer details of turrets.
I also tab target every illusion, clone, phantasm so I can count them precisely before deciding to go for the mesmer in the end.
I have tab targeted more ranger pets that can be tamed by now, but some of those were maybe summoned birds from skills or so.
Tab targeting tought me what wonderfull looking creatures Elementalists sometimes conjure.
Tab targeting shows me the beauty of pvp.
[copied an earlier reply I made on the subject]
Haha, thank god it isn’t just me! I lose my cursor constantly! It’s especially bad on my Necro when I have to have specific placement. I get pretty disoriented lol.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
I was having the same problem with the cursor and thought it was lag. I goggled the problem and found some people fixing it by turning off mouse options like Areo, hide cursor when typing and show cursor shadows.
I turned them all off and just tested in game in a large WvW battle and it seems to have fixed it.
I will update after some more testing.
Honest to goodness, best solution I’ve found for GW2’s missing cursor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104674
Took about a week of play to get used to the button layout; after that… let’s just say mouse cursors are no longer a consideration. The keys on the side of the mouse function for my 6/7/8/9/0 skill buttons. My thumb does all the work. No more clicking- ever.
I gave up on waiting for developers to actually listen to feedback and make adjustments.
lol there are times where i have no idea where my cursor/mouse pointer was that i accidentally request to kick one of my party members during combat.
Thats how bad the UI is. Never did this happen in any mmorpg i’ve played and still playing.
And another Legendary UI Flaw is the F Button (default Interaction & loot button)
F Button = Loot + Talk + Rez (All in 1 Button)
For example,
If i wanna loot, i’ll be talking to an npc or resurrecting an npc/player.
Futhermore while rezzing there is a delay after cancelling it with Esc or Movement.
By then mobs had wiped out a chunk of my hp or got CC’ed to death.
All thanks to the Genius All-In-One F Button
Edit: Change it to U or C or K Button? Nah wont work cause the function will be the same. And o yeah Tab Targetting not targetting in clock cycle. Target Closest/Nearby is the most powerful one cause at times it could even target mobs Behind my toon even if there’s an army of mobs on my LoS nearby lol!

In essence, ANet built a action game with classic MMORPG controls.
Last i checked one of the devs said they were working on this very problem with the tab targeting it’s been over two weeks since I read that thread and saw anything about it,
The targeting is off especially when being attacked by multiple mobs
The cursor disappearing thing happens do to the FR I suspect. This game has a problem with FR not sure if it’s the load required on the CPU to run it which is rather odd or because the core program hasn’t been optimized.
Yep, the auto targeting system and trying to keep track of your cursor during combat sucks big time.
The number of rabbits, does, stags, mooses and other friendly creatures killed because of this is huge…
I hope you can live with yourself ANet, having all those poor defenseless creatures deaths on your conscience…
I always loose my mouse cursor when there’s a lot of crap flying across my screen. It blends in.
I lose my cursor constantly also and I’m pretty sure the direct reason for this is Mouse look and mouse moving, which I constantlly use, when you mouse look the cursor disappears. This shouldn’t happen imo you should always be able to see where your cursor is reguardless of mouselook and its an easy fix, would be nice to have a more customizable cursor as well able to change look, shape, size, color what not to make it stand out more when fighting particle bombs.

Took the words out of my mouth.
And imo, looting should be rebind-able to another key. I’m so sick of hitting “F” only to start chatting with an NPC, get stuck rezzing one, or running off a cliff with the current bug of running+pickup.
And here I thought I was the only one who kept losing the cursor.. I always simply assumed it was due to too many particle effects onscreen. (I notice that if there are too many players casting everything starts to blurr together and i lose concentration.. never experienced this in other games)

This is a legitimate complaint as well.. with the current poor visibility of the loot sparkles, the only way to ensure you dont miss out any drops is to keep spamming F, and that causes you to start interacting with random NPCs in the middle of a fight, another example of poor design..
