There are a few separate elements that tend to get mixed up.

1) The manifesto and all interviews that say this game is not about a treadmill. By itself this turn around came without warning and just is a complete 180 on your original course. By itself that is a slap in the face for many people like myself. I don’t like surprises like this because you broke a promise. That’s what your manifesto was, you should’ve realised that when you released it.

2) The actual effects of the FotM dungeon on the community. Aside from actually implementing a treadmill, be it very basic to begin with is also done in a way that is splitting the people who are still playing it seems.

3) Also adding stats to the infusion upgrades and adding a new tier really gives the game a new feeling, one I don’t like. I can’t log in anymore because of it.

4) Then the issue of communication. You respond to the bugs during the weekend but haven’t addressed specifically point 1 here. You cannot convince me that you didn’t expect this kittentorm, but you chose to let it just hit and stay silent on it. Just one attempt at easing people’s minds which totally didn’t help because of what was implied more than what was said and really ignores the key issue: You made a promise and didn’t keep it and have been acting as if nothing happened. That reeks of intent.

5) You wanted to make GW2 and let GW1 be and were excited about creating a persistent world. So you made one. Guess what, you have now sealed the fate of the persistent world by making sure people are either in WvW or FotM / LA. You might as well close down the persistent world and give people access to dungeons from LA and let them level in WvW.

I just don’t get what you did here, but to me it’s a big failure. You see, even if you took a million precautions, a lot of people just won’t believe you anymore when you say it’s not that bad and we are making sure it won’t affect casuals…Why would they believe you when you so obviously broke a promise and then refuse to address as if you are hiding something?

That just feels like either malicious intent or incompetence to handle communication. Either way, it’s not very encouraging for the future.

I totally agree with the post above not to mention others that have posted their unhappiness!

It was poorly planned/thought out.
You have to remember that we as people have a real life and things we have such as job, family, and other obligations takes precedence over a game.

I have a job, it requires me to be there from this this time until this time in order for me to get $.
Now, I’ve paid you to entertain me and you thought this was a good idea? To make me be online in the game at a certain time or lose out on something, not to mention the that it was very buggy.

Please don’t try to make me play when “you” want me to, because if you do and I’m only speaking for myself, will be finding something else to do with my free time and $.

I talked friends into buying and playing this game, now I feel like a totally idiot for it!

In the midst of this thread I would like to express my confidence in ANet. I know you guys are not trying to make people mad or rip us off. I do believe that you are trying to make the best game you can. I don’t love every change that you have made but I realize that every change is intended as an improvement. It’s not just spit-balled together but thought out and implemented with professional care and excellence. I realize that even within ANet itself there must be different opinions about what should or shouldn’t be in the game and you try to pick the best ones, not everyone will be happy. Overall I think you made a fantastic game that I will be playing for a long time. Thank you.

So Anet is just going to pretend it didn’t happen and hope people forget? No word for a week and nothing in term of compensation. I wonder if anyone at Anet even remember how kitteny everyone felt after the event.

What? Did you want Anet to base the event around your schedule specifically?

For a proclaimed adult with such a busy schedule and family to take care of, you sure have the maturity of a child with self-entitlement issues.

The island is useless. I have no idea what it’s about.

In Orr, it was all about the pact closing in on the dragon and cutting off its ressources. There were warbands marching west. Lost island? More like “lost cause”.

KITTEN! KITTEN! KITTEN! Ok now let’s see if I can be constructive. Although life constrained my participation in most of the event I enjoyed what I did play, but, really did not get the storyline for parts 1 and 2 since I missed part 1 and couldn’t begin part 2. All I did was jump on a boat and kill karkas. Sorry to see the lighthouse disappear, but even a few NPC’s chatting about the event explaining what happened would be better than looking at the remaining stump and wondering.

Now onto my favorite part of the game. Clipping. That is what I beleieve we call the ‘hiding’ of players from each other so that the game can run. In this event, who thought performacne would be increased so it was ok to clip the enemies out? Or is this an example of server lag…to many people on one server causing the whole game to run poorly?

If the former, uh guys bad idea! I like to know what I’m aiming at and it’s helpful to know who killed me. Basically, all I could do was rez people and spray water everywhere….not sure what melee characters did.

If it’s the latter, again bad form. You have the latest technology in limiting map population, overflow servers. Yet you continue to overestimate the ability of your servers/programming to handle large groups in PvE situations. Please stop! You are killing us (quite literally when discussing in game avatars!). Epic does not mean 40,000 people watching an artistic slide show of numbers and names and downed player symbols, while thinking “Wow! That must have been huge…or a tiny little bunny with a whole lot of damage!” Ugh!

I have no problems with one time events, I bought the game expecting them, however I do expect to ‘catch up on the story’ somehow, preferably through exposition through either activities or NPC interactions in-game, or at worst through lore notes in Wiki.

I did like the new texture rendering system with the damage showing up on the armor over time, but if this was the reason for the failure of the enemy models showing up during the primary event on Sunday, then maybe you need to rethink this idea.

Finally, no rewards for those that played the entire event and disconnected as the chest appeared: Really? Another bug causes someone to not recieve their reward? Please get these people their goodies…quickly. Some of these people are not happy, for some reason, and are saying bad things about the game!

The one time event really showed that GW2 is based on an overrated GW1 engine unfit to handle what was thrown at it.

As already witnessed in WvW, the engine does not handle more than ~20 players and an equal number of NPCs very well. In fact, more than that becomes unplayable, unless you think “not seeing allies or enemies” is how games ought to be played.

Maybe you should bring some of the old GW1-spirit back to the open world and give every group of 5 and / or every 20 players in a zone their own overflow. Basically, you’d leave the big city with your party and enter your private overflow (aka instance) where you could at least see all allies and enemies. The game-engine does not seem to handle anything that exceeds this well at all.

So in the end we got no answers. Silence talk for it self.

I really don’t understand why companies still don’t get this after all these years.

For all the screaming and yelling and frustration, most of us understand in the end that mistakes happen and human beings err. It’s beyond obvious that happened here. Unrendered waves of enemies, massive lag, bugged NPCs and events and spirit-crushing disconnects.

Very, very frustrating and very, very disappointing.

But in the end, people are also pretty forgiving. I, for example, do want to play this game. I was enthusiastic for it before the LS event. I still want to be.

But the silence… oh, the silence. The silence is so deafening it hurts.

You know what? I can deal with the fact that the first day event was a huge hassle because of the lag. That I couldn’t finish the quest chain because Noll was bugged for so long that I never got a chance. That I missed the Lion’s Arch portion of the 2nd day event because after 35 minutes in overflow it still hadn’t kicked off. Even that while others got precursors for spending 2 hours in the final event that I got nothing but a repair bill after getting lagged out 2.5 hours in during the second wave of reinforcement adds.

What I CANNOT tolerate, however, is the refusal to make even a token attempt to keep players in the loop on what’s being discussed. Two things are possible:

1. Anet isn’t keeping us updated
2. Anet has made little or no progress on understanding what went wrong and designing solutions for the future

Lost Shores is over and gone. It’s not coming back. If I got screwed by Anet’s flawed handling of it I got screwed by Anet’s flawed handling of it. It’s just a game and it’s not the end of the world.

What I really want to know now is: do I have to worry about getting screwed again in future events, or is Anet taking this seriously and putting the talent and work in place to make it worth my while to even continue playing?

Despite the kitten from some fanboys, this game is NOT free and never has been. Aside from the $60 to buy it, my plan was basically to buy $20 in gems one month, $10 the next to average a regular $15/mo fee. I don’t plan on buying any more until I feel confident this game is being run by competent people.

I don’t feel confident that’s true right now. How many other people were so disappointed by that event that they’re doing the same? How many of the trial people walked away in disgust who might have otherwise bought it had it been handled competently?

Wise up, Anet. Talk.

The AMA provided some interesting answers to a few of my questions about the recent updates. I sure would like to hear something regarding the accounts that were disconnected during the event. We were told to expect something early this week, and it is no longer early this week. I’ve just been routinely updating my ticket.

Here’s my feedback on the Lost Shores.

At 22:40 pm, 3 players, including myself confirmed they were on the map.

My character was killed within 1 second from the following attacks:

13,256 Champion Karka Spit
13,770 Champion Karka Spit

As there is a cost for travel to waypoints, a repair cost and the value of drops are often inadequate; I do not find the Lost Shores island entertaining.

Grind Wars 2; the game that ate my brain.

Thanks for the reassurance Mark. We are well aware that you folks have plenty of responsibilities that preclude responding to each and every concern/poster. We are many, and you are few.

That said, those of us who were told that there would be new information regarding the disconnects during the event early this week would very much like to be updated. Even if there is no new information because the problem is far more complicated than expected, a little communication would go a long way.

Thanks again for the reassurance that our concerns are being read.

I thought every aspect of this “Lost Shores” fiasco was ABYSMAL.

On lowest ugly ugly UGLY settings I ran at 25fps
On highest settings I ran at 19fps.

1920×1080
Intel i5 2500k 3.5ghz x 4
Nvidia 560Ti OC x 2 in SLI
120gb SATA3 SSD
8gb DDR3 RAM
Win7 64bit
and i’ve been a computer systems builder for 15 years.

You wasted all of your money and resources on creating one-time only events that were PAINFUL to complete, LONG as hell, and i felt REQUIRED to be there because of all the loot.

I don’t see how anyone can enjoy ANY video game at under 30fps.

I think you’ve missed the fact that your PC- and game-specs have little to nothing to do with server-side lag. When, as a server, you’re trying to govern the actions and content of hundreds of people, it’s just not viable to go above a certain limit before the game looks and feels too chunky. If it’s gonna drop, it’ll drop people because it can’t handle the load.

I am running a PC with similar specs to yours and mine was just as bad, although the FPS rate was way worse (max 12FPS in only the first phase of the event). Why? Simple. My connection from half way around the world in competition with everyone else who is 95% guaranteed to be closer to the server than me. If you can’t drop the latency you can’t pick up the FPS.

I do agree that the event was abysmal, totally. But do be thankful that you got to be there for the final event… others were less fortunate, myself included.

FPS Lag is Client side lag. Time-delayed latency is server lag. FPS doesn’t lag. It either stutters down or runs smoothly; the former can be a consequence of insufficient hardware power, or a gross lack of optimization in the client’s design. Since the game’s launch, my average FPS has increased (with max settings on an ASUS G74 laptop) from an average of 17fps at launch, to an average 42fps, now. This is due to routine client side optimization that most developers often perform during a game’s early launch development.

Only during large group events does it stutter down. That’s to be expected when the game is rendering so many players and particle effects at one time. To believe a single GPU, or even two powerful ones can handle everything that this game potentially throws at you is silly.

I’m not trying to be a kitten here; I’m simply trying to squash the misnomer that server side lag has anything to do with FPS discrepancies. It doesn’t. It never has; but because of the massive rendering scale of this game, it’s practically impossible and highly unrealistic to ever expect you will run at silky framerates without anything other than a bleeding edge system, no matter how good you are at building them.

My latest-built desktop is a Sabertooth X77 with quad-SLI GTX690s running overclocked with an I7 3.5ghz and 16GB of RAM, and large groups STILL drop FPS down to the 30s from an average 120fps in the world, when games like Battlefield 3 run maxed all the time.

So yes, some optimization is still needed, but I’ve never played a large-pop MMOG where you’ll always have picture-perfect framerates.

I get home from work Friday in anticipation to start the new content! ---client starts to get updated around 6:30pm. Lvl52 Warrior.

Twenty minutes-ish later I get in game to find Phase 1 complete from chit-chatter. I hit the forums to confirm. Appears to have ran around 30-40 minutes or so from what I read or heard, I think.

INVESTIGATION!! Actually had a good time. In fact, doing anything they script and design has always been a fun experience. I get part 1 done and head on over to Caledon and to my surprise load into the Overflow. At least 40-50 players running around, defeating the evil that plagues these lands but it appears to be having a good time. All awaiting the infamous Noll to spawn. There’s the close by event that happens that’s a plus! After a hour or so, everyone is chatting that Noll is broken or down. But then you hear that others say it works. It was broken for me so I thought ’I’ll come back.’ No worries, plenty of time over the weekend.

The one thing that I hugely enjoy about GW2 are all of the types of puzzles and climbing and platforming. I cannot, never get enough of it. I applaud the designers.

Saturday, I load in to find Noll is still down. No worries, I head on over LA and in the overflow to await the beginning of Phase2 around 3pm est. It didn’t start at 3pm but closer to 4pm as I recall. The change that I noticed were the dock posts all of a sudden has torches in them. After 10minutes or so realizing I was on the wrong dock, I headed on over and eventually made it to the island.

I was in the middle of a large number of people that just started to head out to run events. I suppose this would be my first experience with a zerg group running events. Again, quite fun. After that, spent the rest of the night attempting the skipping stones puzzle. Yeah, I was laughing my kitten off.

Sunday, I load in to find an update! I hit Caledon and find Noll was spawned and just as I arrived, a group started to attack. So I assisted and boom! It completed the task and I received the mail. I kind of laughed it off and went ’ah well.’ I then hit LA once again to find the next step has been wiped clean. Sad panda...

I then load over to Lost Shores a hour after it started, found the group. I bet there were 100 people there. Holy smokes! I preceded to stay alive and damage as much as I could assisting. When everything was over, the chest was active for me. LOOTS!

I couldn’t complete the content which kind of sucked but all in all, I had a blast. I then go run Fractals for the first time and we completed lvl 1. I haven’t gone back and now am 63. Good loot, fun content. Good times. I would move all dungeons to similar difficult level models and up the loots or nerf Fractal’s loots in comparison to the rest of the dungeons. Or both.

A note about scaling in my experience, It does work but if you don’t have the amount of stats as the lvl65 (i think)gear, runes, sigils and jewels, You won’t be able to take the hits very well. What I find is that the rush rush mentality and taken over. People want it now. Appears to be a reason why players are gating the levels of Fractals with gear. I can guarantee there are nicer ways to voice it however. That’s all I’ll say. Have fun!

Does it really take that much effort to, more than a week after a major content release that led to thousands of players having serious problems, put together a quick blurb about what’s being done?

I don’t think anybody expects a thesis and as far as I can tell nobody ever asked Anet to individually respond to every question and criticism, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask to get at least a brief summary of what the team is looking at.

Anet is HORRIBLY uncommunicative and it leads to people drawing their own conclusions based on pure speculation. For example, it leads ME to speculate, in combination with the new info about the Wintersday event, that Anet really isn’t concerned about how the LS event went and is just plowing numbly forward with the next nifty thing with minimal concern for quality. It makes me believe that maybe Anet doesn’t have the resources to develop and release three big events in three months. It makes me think Anet maybe shouldn’t have done LS at all because they were unequipped to handle it or that maybe it was supposed to be part of the original release and didn’t make it, but then got rushed out anyway.

Most of all it makes me think I maybe wasted 80 bucks so far on a game that isn’t being developed competently and may, as a result, not last very long in this highly competitive segment of the games market.

Because that’s happens when you don’t communicate information clearly. People have to draw conclusions with what they have, and it usually isn’t pretty.

It’s not a matter of putting the blurb together, but for the team to investigate what can be done and how it will be done. That said, I came back to my desk to find an email with information on what is being done about the situation.

We have confirmed that we can provide everyone who did not have the opportunity to loot the chest with a reward for their participation. All affected players will receive a reward regardless of whether or not they have contacted Support. We’re working very hard on this, and you should have a reward in your in-game mail early next week.

I hope this alleviates your concerns.

What about the problems themselves? What’s being done to make it sure it doesn’t happen in future events?

There is a very simple easy fix for this. They just need to limit the number of people on maps. Cut to 40% or so. And then just make tons of overflown servers to supply the demand of people.

Having the whole map on a single area will cause problems no matter what they do or how strong your pc is.

The world is teeming with unnecessary people.
It is God’s decision that i fight.

Hi Mark, I dont mean to imply anything but the italics appear to be incredibly well chosen words. It appears the good folks at ANet have managed to circle a number of measurable criteria to identify those in and those out. Please can you ellaborate what those are to further alleviate concerns?
i.e. like one of the possible examples below

  • Completed any event step, but no chest looted on account.
  • Hit the Ancient Karka at all, but no chest looted on account.
  • Completed the event, but no chest looted on account, time was within 2hrs of commencement of phase3.
    etc, etc.

I never managed to see the Ancient Karka die due to several overflows crashing/disco, but did complete the prelim event. Best i ever got the AK down to in four hours of trying was ~20% life. Relogging back in to completed events.

I would be rather frustrated to discover after all the rewards go out to find i did not meet the criteria despite the best efforts to complete it.

And what of the people you have Alienated from Oceanic time zones?
Are you going to allow them to have a go at the event or is it just going to be ignored?

The sceptic in me imagines that this reward has taken so long because it involves creating a T-Shirt to be worn as Town Clothes which says:

“I Took Part In The Ancient Karka Event And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt”

Well, after the debacle of the starting event (and not getting any loot from it). I decided to completely ignore everything else associated with the Lost Shores event and have done so to this day.

Please don’t let the next event be FuBAR as well.

I fit all three criteria as I did all parts and then just never did the finale as I wouldn’t be able to even function specs wise.

Yes, i may be a bit impatient, but how early in the week should anyone concerned expect to receive the said mail?

Please do not take the unstickying of this thread as an indication that your feedback is being ignored. We are paying attention and we are taking your feedback here, and in the recent survey into account.

However, the teams here are unable to respond individually to every concern presented here, as they have their normal responsibilities to take care of, as well as parsing through said feedback.

As I’ve stated before, your feedback is important to us, and this thread will remain open, for the time being, to future feedback on this subject.

Can you also post the final videos online. Mist the cutscenes and I really would like to see it.

Also, I am sure I didn’t receive any survey invitation. You took a sample of the population?

Hi!

I am by nature a suspicious person. And in this case, my suspicions were aroused by the bolded words in the quoted post.

“A reward” is not the same as “the reward”. Am I going to open my mail to receive the equivalent of a previous poster’s t-shirt? I certainly hope not, but who can say?

My question is the following: Will those of us who were prevented from claiming our rewards at the time receive the same reward as the lucky few who DID manage to loot the chest, or will we be treated to a consolation prize not worth the inventory space it takes up?

P.S. If we got it in addition to the regular reward everyone else got, I would totally wear that t-shirt too.

P.P.S: What is Anet’s definition of ‘early in the week’? My definition says that only Monday and Tuesday qualifies as early, but the previous note I got said I would receive more info early in the following week, which turned out to be Friday. Does Anet hold to the philosophy that as long as it’s before Sunday it’s still early?

I see no reason that they would be unable to give everyone who missed out the 100% Accessory Shell and 20 slot bag. One would also hope those who missed it are given a box whose loot table will give at least one random exotic if not two when opened, but I think that may be less likely.

I received the event chest in my mail yesterday.

It was crappy missing the final event, and more so the chest, but this was very nice (and unexpected).

Thanks again Anet for your goodwill in this. ;D

Thanks for the loot and for thinking of those who could not complete the events. I’ve since gone to Arah and must say that killing Zhaitan more than made up for any shortcomings I’ve found in the game so far. What an incredible end game.
