Anyone else losing the grand enthusiasm they had for this game after the Nov 15th announcement?

For me, GW2 was proof that not all games had to follow the classical themepark formulas. A break away from quest hubs, raiding and gear grinds. Sure, leveling was a bit of a grind but once it was done, it was done. The game was about exploration and seeing new stories, not simply about chasing bigger numbers.

For the first 2 months, GW2 showed the world that not every game has to be like WoW to succeed.

Enter today- Orr is empty. Every city but LA is hanging on by a thread, and LA is only popular so that folks an spam LFG for fractals. Everyone is in FotM, trying to keep up with the first steps of the treadmill so that when the next step comes out they will be prepared. Love FotM or hate it, if you want to keep your character up to date on armor you will run them.

This doesn’t at all feel like the game I started playing. It went from a game where character stats were almost completely normalized, making them a non-issue, to suddenly being focused entirely on making my numbers bigger. :-\

With so many gear grinders already available out there, I was hoping this game would be an oasis for those of us looking to step away and do something unique and fun. I guess unique doesn’t pay well.

And maybe we need more.

The disappointment from this move overflowed from this forum and is spilling out not only onto MMORPG.com’s forums but even other MMO forums, with the folks who swore it would suck all saying “I told you so” and the players who left for this game saying “Honey I’m home”.

News articles, blogs, and threads with over 11,000+ replies all showing massive disdain for the direction the game is heading in and the response we get? “We’re very excited about the new content, and from the reactions we have seen, so are many of you. Players have already spent an incredible amount of time in the new Fractals dungeon, and their reaction to it has been phenomenal. "

Not only are they refusing to even so much as comment on the fiasco, but they are using the fact we have to play FotM to keep up with the gear grind as we currently have no other choices to PR spin it appearing to be popular? 0_o That’s a fine way to say “We don’t care what our users think. It’s all about what WE want, since that worked so well for Star Wars Galaxies.”

There is already a game that has perfected the gear treadmill and I don’t want to play it.

This game has something truly new that it offers, I wish they would stick with it. I actually love being 80 and still having other stuff to do instead of just raiding and grinding heroics. I HATE having those as the only two options.

I think not actually very many of the 2 million are in a funk about fotm. I think an awful lot of people found they’ve run low on things to do in-game and there’s a whole pile of things to do elsewhere.

Planetside 2 free to play launched, actually a bunch of new games, holidays. The univ here dead week started, etc.

It was surprising to me to see only 4 full servers on a Saturday.

Me, I played a little on my 3rd alt, but meh. My gf’s given up a while ago, played for Mad King, and then came in for the karka event and hated it, said she’s so over GW2. She’s someone with a completely packed HoM.

Sometimes it’s time for a break.

I’ve quit long before the Nov. 15th announcement. The problem with this game is that imho, it is impossible to make a themepark MMO without gear progression. It’s the “carrot on a stick” that keeps people motivated to play. I strongly believe GW2 should have taken the sandbox approach. However, the developers made several design choices that put GW2 into a corner, such as separating WvW from the PvE world, opting for per-player instanced resource nodes, and the general anti-competitive feel of the PvE world.

Yup same here. Was one for the Open World Part of the weekend event but that bugged out to with log-in servers and couldn’t even get back in the last 2-3 min when Karka was being killed. Then could log in for 1+ hr. That after having participated for 2 1/2 hrs.

Then no real reason to play anymore as I know end-game will be about grinding instance/dungeon for gear and even crafting materials for best gear.

Same with my son and other friends. Some still log on but not near as before that announcement as they see where this is heading. Most of them played LoTRO too and saw what radiance and shift in end-game design focus did to that game.

We are a guild that have been around for a long time and seen games come and go trying to find that MMO that would not be like the standard generic WoW wannabe.

Areas of the open world looks abandoned now and the ones that still plays are in new dungeons FotM and spamming chat with “LFM FotM Tier X need full exotic, link gear or cant join group” etc

Exactly how GW2 was never supposed to become.

Shame as GW2 was supposed to become different and not about this, but a few loudvoiced WoW style players QQ on forum, and devs listen just as devs did with LoTRO and now GW2 is going down the same slippery slope. :/

When will game companies realize that the WoW model won’t make them the new WoW cash cow ???

Look at SW TOR, now already F2P and only 3 servers left i think, look at RIFT, look how LoTRO went down etc. They might no be totally dead and buried yet, but they sure aren’t what they could have been if they didn’t try to be another WoW Wannabe.

Then too late, if ever, they wake up and try to change back but then it’s too late. The best part of the playerbase have already left by then and won’t return after broken promises and being spit in the face, while game companies cater to the same type of WoW raised instance/dungeon grinders.

LoTRO removed radiance after years and didn’t even add any Raid (so far) in RoR but I just cant find myself supporting them again after all this time as they let me and my friends down over and over again. I have 2 lifetime accts so can just log in and play but I just don’t and won’t.

Feels same with GW2 now.

I know what awaits at the end, with having to grind some instnce or another for the best en-game gear and even ingredients for crafting them, and that kills the inspiration to even play up to that.

Before that announcement me, my son, step-son and most of our Guild were happy playing daily and had tons left to do and lookin forward to WvWvW and other stuff. We did World Bosses in open world etc, trying to gather materials to get all crafts to 400 etc.

Now it just feels meh and sigh to even think about it, as i know i cant play this game as i like to end-game anymore but must go into dungeons/instances at some point to get the best stats and I really dont want to.

Oh well Anet at least got me to buy 1 CE and 2 normal boxes (for my son and step-son) plus I bought 4K gems before they made that announcement.

Now I will keep my wallet away as GW2 is not the game they said it would be. If they find back soon to the right path, Im still here and reading and will see it. If they wait to long I’ll be gone to never return, just like I left LoTRO and other games going down that slippery slope.

Im not going to sit around for 2-3 years like I did with LoTRO and hope, post in Forums and wait. Been there, done that. This time I will leave much faster and not waste my time on something that just isnt fun anymore and ion my eyes have been ruined as opposed to what it was supposed to be and that originally made me start playing it.

Yes in the US we’re in the middle of a big family-oriented holiday weekend, second only to Christmas in scope. Myself, I’ve logged a total of an hour since Wednesday, whereas I’d usually spend a few hours per day.

If they came out tomorrow and said “Maximum stats allowed in WvW is exotics. All other stats will be normalized to their level” I would do the same thing, but as long as Ascended and legendary gear will affect PvP, I need to get them.

Otherwise I’d say to hell with fractals and hope everyone running them has a good time while I do my own thing.

It’s happening on mine daily. People aren’t doing the older dungeons (can’t ever find five) if we do find five they ask you what you’re wearing. If we try to go to Orr to continue with our normal events process there’s not enough people to clear the temples to even buy anything because they’re all in LA waiting to get into fractals.

We need a response about what exactly they plan on doing about the bottlenecking they’ve put into the game by:

1: adding gear with higher stats
2: making it impossible to farm for mats for end game crafting (DR, broken MF, impossibly low drop rates)
3: making all of the drops worth anything drop only in dungeons
4: making new rewards using a currency only found in one dungeon

All of these things have lead to this model they have now, which is basically causing people to care only about one play style and that’s not what their manifesto told us this game would be.

I do hope they give us some word next week sometime when the holiday is over about what exactly is on the agenda.

Honestly, the only time I notice a change is when I come on the forums.

Funny thing is that once they introduced the ascended gear I knew that it was the first step towards a treadmill. Think of that what you may but it made me re-evaluate the game, because I thought also, well I could just ignore it.

But here’s the thing. I just had finished world completion and the jump puzzles, which was a lot of fun but I have no intention of going through all that again with alts. In fact I found leveling alts much less exciting as leveling my main. So then this update comes and here it is.

After completing the things I really liked in GW2, I must conclude that the game doesn’t offer what GW1 did and other games do. You see I can ignore the treadmill in other MMOs just the same and then in comparison GW2 loses out.

For me the lack of treadmills and just being able to play GW2 for fun and farming cool armour sets together and all that as I did with GW1, just isn’t available here.

I don’t like the crafting system
I don’t like sPvP (even though it was great in GW1 for me)
I only like WvW from time to time
I’m sort of done with the existing dungeons as I got the gear I wanted from them (most armour sets and weapon skins are fugly).
Story line = bad
Voice acting = horrific

Bottom line is that the ascended gear just sealed for me what was already happening. I think GW2 would’ve been a great single player game with online dungeons, but as an MMO it doesn’t have the appeal.

I will say though that a lot of things I was willing to put up with, simply because there was no stress about endgame stats. It was sort of the glue that held it together for me, while hoping various elements would improve. Now it doesn’t matter anymore.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

I have to admit, there was something in gw1 that’s missing in this game. The feeling of walking through pre-searing Ascalon, escaping a pack of Charr, fighting the Stone Summit, getting betrayed by the White Mantle… I miss those feels.

A sandbox needs to have complex player interactions, like territory and resource control, guild politics, moral choices to be either good or bad or neither, ability to forge guilds, alliances, and factions. For that, you NEED PvP, or none those things will matter or make any impact on the game world. By separating WvW out, ArenaNet excluded PvP from the main game world, and, by proxy, all of the above things. A sandbox world needs a large variety of content do, something that GW2 severely lacks (3 types of quest x 1000 is NOT variety)

Not having the gear grind was one of the big reasons that drew me to this game. It was something that I would always excitedly tell friends about when recruiting them to play. I really liked the idea of the gear plateau, that the differentiation was to be appearance based not stat based. Isn’t that what GW1 was about? People kept playing to chase shiny skins (for armor and weapons at least) not stats? Am I totally wrong here? And yes GW2 is not GW1, just IMO that was a fantastic feature that should not be lost in the transition. I wouldn’t say that I have lost the motivation to play, but I have lost some motivation to share it with more people. Especially those who would be approaching it from a casual perspective.

I don’t have any experience/comment on the gear grind, etc because I’m only level 50 and I’m not too worried about that at the moment…

However, for everyone who is “complaining” (harsh word in this case, because I think you guys deserve to) you may want to consider changing your server. I am on a pretty active one, and I have not run into the issues you guys are talking about (US by the way). I was in a group with 4 80’s, and as a level 50, nobody complained or commented on my level. In fact, I was the “leader” of the group who started the whole thing – and we finished level 1 in FotM. Yesterday, I did an AC story, AC path 1 and 2, and CM story run with some guild mates and people I found in map chat. Yes, there are people still looking to do the other dungeons somewhere.

I suppose I am lucky in my server, but don’t lose hope completely!

I have to agree with Lookitsandrea on this even tho there are a ton of folks doing fractals on our server all other dungeons are being done on a regular basis. If i take AC for instance you can always find loads of people infront there ready to roll. And altho you get the ocasional lvl80 person just wanting lvl80s in their group there are more people that dont care about it. Ive even done fractals with lvl15 people in the groups and it went just as well as it would have with the lvl80 groups ive ran with.

Even though I know I’m wrong, I secretly hope the reason they’re “ignoring” all the complaints is because they’re attempting the same tactic used to teach babies to not cry for attention.

I was in a group with 4 80’s, and as a level 50, nobody complained or commented on my level. In fact, I was the “leader” of the group who started the whole thing – and we finished level 1 in FotM.

No offense but that’s probably because a group of level 20’s being played by monkeys could complete FotM level 1…

Probably the only positive thing I have to contribute to this thread is that Tarnished Coast is a great server with a great community if anyone is looking to jump ship to a new server. I’m currently on FotM level 12 and I have never been gearchecked or anything of the sort. I rarely see people complaining in LA map chat, I rarely see any sort of “elitist” recruitment messages for any dungeon, etc etc. I highly recommend TC for anyone who values a good community, we’re also pretty good in WvW if that’s important to you.

I understand what you are saying but is that really something Arenanet marketers want to hear. If people are telling some to stay away from the new content, why? If the new content is good and fun, we should all be excited and encouraged to do it? Something is wrong when people are not recommending the new content.

Yes, I know it is personal choice. But some people will try things out once just to determine if they like. I hated MMO dungeons before GW2. Even after doing AC story (oh my gosh), I continued to do the dungeons. I was shocked and still to this day cannot explain why I enjoy their dungeons so much.

Fractals? I would have done it with my guild. But something about this whole thing started to remind me of other traditional MMOs. And I absolutely hate those. So I stayed away. I think part it was when I stated reading about people only wanting a certain level. Until Fractals, I had never been turned down in a dungeon party and always felt included.

This really sucks. I was a GW1 player for years and thousands of hours. Now I’m being forced to decide if I want to stay with a game I don’t enjoy, and isn’t what was promised, just because of the old GW1 Community (which was fantastic like no other). Of course, that seems to be changing, too.

Every failed MMO has faced a turning point when many of their players stopped rooting for them to succeed, and started rooting for them to fail.

I’ve seen it happen with SWG, Warhammer Online, TOR, the list goes on.

What causes this is a failure to listen to the people who are currently playing the game, in an attempt to bring in players who are currently playing something else. It’s doomed to failure, and has happened so many times I’m at a loss for how MMO developers don’t realize the problem.

I don’t think GW2 is at that point YET… but recent changes / additions and events in the game reek of an attempt to bring in the WoW style raiders who have been complaing about there being “no end game”. This is a huge step backwards in GW2’s development, and it’s hurting the game more than helping it.

I just hope they can figure out what’s turning some of their current player base off in time, because chasing that hard core raider demographic has doomed so many MMO’s in the past it’s crazy.

I don’t know, having a lot of threads feel so separate and disjointed. I’ve said this in a previous post but if you want impact you need a unified front, a single thread spanning pages is a lot more impactful then several smaller threads. Combining and unifying the discussion into a single stream also makes it easier for people reading (preferably ANet staff) to get a simple grasp of what’s going on, as opposed to having to read several smaller threads and piece them all together to get the big picture.
Think of it like a protest, the more people you get in a protest the more attention and impact. If you have several smaller protest spread out over a geographic area or over a period of time then each individual protest can more easily be ignored or overlooked and thus overall it becomes less impactful.

I basically stopped playing long before Nov 15th.

I’m a Guild Wars veteran, and I don’t want to see the game fail, but there’s something about GW2 that doesn’t grab me. I haven’t even gotten any characters to max level. I’ve played a bunch of alts to see if I would find that “happy place”, but it just doesn’t happen.

And this despite all the awesomeness in GW2. I love the combat mechanics, the story lines, the races, the artwork, the world, and the killer maps…

GW1 had my attention for years, and I’ve been waiting for GW2 forever, but after playing it for a bit, it’s just… …my desire to play isn’t there. I find myself turning the computer off in the evenings to go re-read books instead.

I can’t pinpoint what it is exactly, but I think that I found GW1 to be more of a challenge to be honest. In GW2 you don’t have to build a group to succeed, you just find a bunch of other players and tag along for a bit. You can find good gear as drops without any problems, etc, which for one thing makes all the crafting professions quite redundant. I’m not motivated to level up, not motivated to get new armors, not motivated to explore (although I love the big maps, it’s just not the accomplishment it used to be). All I’ve been doing in-game lately is farm resource nodes and sell stuff on the trading company – and that gets old pretty fast.

I think the game is too easy. It feels like I’m wasting time when I’m playing it.

They cant even make pvp unbroken or make it fun for that matter and talk about Esports Jesus, like that will ever happen now, why do they even bother making new sPVP maps when they treat PVPers like crap. They spent all that time to release a gear treadmill when PVP was/is in dire straits. Obviously they are more interested in attracting WOW kids than the existing player base. On top of it all they actually made all their detractors sound correct, all the doom sayers who said Arena Net was a bunch of backstabbing lying kittens who I defended the game against, now look correct, and when the conspiracy theory lunatics are actually right, something has gone seriously wrong.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYsueOW4ixk&feature=related
It didn’t have to be this way GW2 if they had FOCUSED on its strengths sPVP and made more diversity, fixed the broken mechanics so PVP wasnt so one deminsional and spammy they could have held on to a dedicated and stable player base of about 3 million or so casuals and PVPers. Instead they opted to betray those players and cater to Raiders, whom at best can populate a game up to a few hundred thousand on their own ( see EQ2 subs). They are banking on casuals putting up with this crap because they have to know the pvpers are bolting for the door right now. But why would casuals hang around GW2 for gear grinding when RIFT and WAR do gear grinding so much better. Greedy idiots.

no. because i do not need ascended gear to advance in the game. i do not need to do dungeons. everybody who is angry because he NEEDS this ascended to enjoy the game should start play other games because nobody is forcing you to get that gear.

I agree with op and Rhydian.

The initial motivation to play GW2 was the promising WvW and I like the art design of the game. Its still fun for me but its hard to ignore the extremely bad class balance for high-end players. Its broken to a point I cant understand. It was well balanced until more and more players mastered their gear and pvp-skills about 6 weeks ago. Imho it now cries: hotfix! this game is broken! High-end wardens and high end thieves erease equally well played rangers within seconds. The gamechanging utility to place portals is given to one single class that is already heavy loaded with utility and without any setoff in “hard stats”. And this portal is commonly exploited in WvW to make big groups of players invisible attackers by stressing the servers.
The thing that really annoys me is how slow ArenaNet reacts to the signals of the community asking for urgent tweaks. Instead they focus on making new content. But for me its a pvp-game with pve gimmicks. Seriously how can the devs be so slow in fixing balance and pvp mechanics (mesmer portals, overpowered damage, broken longbow etc.). I dont ask for perfection in balance, just make a big leap in fixing it please.

Although I share your feelings, I would point out that there’s already a lot of threads about this subject.

I am so anxiously waiting the AMA tomorrow. The quote you posted… Either ANet honestly feels that the majority of the playerbase is thrilled with the new direction, via metrics and all and that the vocal forum is only a minority, or they are blowing smoke up our butts with these PR spins. He could be referring to the dungeon itself which is wonderful. Everything else is terrible.

As for the OP, I havent played in days. Im back to WoW and I look to stay there for a while. I am waiting to see what kind of responses they will have tomorrow, and if they are going to fix the damage done. Not partial, middle of the road fixes. Complete fixes.

-Fractal level system either removed or reversed
-Ascended gear easier to obtain
-Ascended gear stats = exotics

For the week after the patch I had NO motivation, 0, to log in and do ANYTHING else other than spam LA chat for a FoTM group. I gave up on all alts and anything else. It is sad because during the winter break I get from work in December, I had planned on leveling an elemental and engineer(had this idea in my head to GW2 binge for a week!). I guess this wont be happening now.

I think a lot of you are extremely exaggerating over this, it’s not that big of a deal, some of you are acting like a teenage girl where they run into something they don’t like and act like the world is going to end, if you don’t like the new dungeons don’t do it, stop being so emotional about it.

Also..rofl the person above me, you are complaining about gear grind but you GO BACK TO WOW which has a serious gear grind? WHAT?! /boggle I don’t understand some of you..wow..Hey guys Anet added 1 sorta grindy tier, I HATE GRINDING FOR GEAR, oh well I am going back to WoW where the gear grind is huge..okay that makes sense. Complaining about the gear treadmill system then going back to wow is crazy.

For me, I like the dungeon. Ive made my peace with ascended gear although it would be better if it were changed.

I dont like the fractal level system. I think many can agree with this.

@memnoch:
-WoW does a gear grind 10x better than arenanet.
-If I am going to gear grind, I will do it in WoW because in WoW there are things to do with that gear grind from tier to tier. When I mash my head senselessly in getting a full ascended set, it will only be fractals that are left to test my “meddle”.
-“sort of a tier gear grind?” Uh, have you seen what is required for one fractal piece? Its rediculous.

Oh okay so you just don’t want to put effort into the game, it’s not about the treadmill itself, you just want it to be easy. I get it now.

Having something cost an insane amount of things doesnt make it difficult.

The current ascended items are incredibly easy to get. Just yesterday a ring dropped and then bought an infusion for 75 tokens. What a grind guys, what a grind !
Now only in time I’ll get my 2nd ring and with either ~25g or 1800 fractal tokens I will get my backpiece as well. A long-term FOTM aim for me. Only a positive. I couldn’t care less if the items have different skins or better stats or just exotics with infusion slots, I want them either way. More stuff to do, more progress.
I am at Fractal difficulty 13 atm, and there are people on 33+ and most are looking for ‘full’ agony resist members for their party etc. Guess what, I don’t care. I’ll play my own game and play fractals how I want, the gear will come to me.
You people make me sick tbh. Moan moan moan. All this ‘wow’ crap again. Don’t like it, move on.
It has happened. There is ascended gear in the game. I don’t get how Anet could even think of removing it/changing stats to exotic stats, imo that’s not going to happen, Anet can’t just change the items people worked hard to get etc.
Only thing Anet could do is NOT add any more gear tier, which even I think would be a really bad idea. Keep the ascended gear as it is, cool skins, fairly easy to acquire etc, then they’re ok.

Not everyone is as lucky to get it as a drop. dont be so quick to assume that your good fortune means that everyone has the same. Ive run a lot of them, I havent seen a single ascended. As for the many people that are 10+, same holds true,.

And I have moved on. BTW, if us casuals move on, you dont have a game. Casuals out number semi-hardcore and hardcore end game progression folks in this game.

Honestly, if you don’t like it, play another game. Just stop whining and go play something else.

GW2 doesn’t have a sub, just double click a different icon on your desktop and play that.

You will be back to GW2 very quickly.

GW2’s graphics, gameplay, awesome PVP and WvW, being able to dodge etc – just destroys other MMOs, as you will quickly discover.

We are not exaggerating. You just don’t understand that people look at things differently.

The thing is that all companies lie to their customers to some extent. It’s called advertising. But Anet went above and beyond and then to do a 180 on a fundamental level is something that not everybody appreciates. So point one is that Anet lied on a much larger scale. Just understand that some people don’t like to be lied to. This is a separate issue from the actual changes in the game.

So then the actual changes in the game. Thing is, there are many games out there that already have gear treadmills. And if Anet wants GW2 to be another game with a treadmill, then there are many games that just do it better. That means that GW2 by itself already has a lot of flaws that people were forgiving towards because it was a game with a casual approach. I promise you that if this game had a gear treadmill upon launch and a sub model, people would’ve left already. The dungeons were bugged as hell, in fact some still are, the TP wasn’t working for weeks. There was no trade possible unless you trusted the guy to send you the money. Events werre horribly bugged and we all know how people feel about Orr.

But most people were ok with it because you could still find a way to progress and there was no feeling of urgency since it was a non gear progression game.

Now that Anet have changed towards gear progression, people start comparing it to other MMOs again because they are now more comparable and lo and behold, more and more people feel that a number of established MMOs actually are more solid and not as flakey as GW2 is.

TL;DR Adding gear progression took away the forgiving attitude people had towards other flaws in the game. Now people reassess and find GW2 lacking as a gear progression game.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

That’s because GW2 is not a gear progression game.

3% difference in stats is utterly meaningless, it’s pretty much just a vanity item.

People who cry so hard about this just can’t do maths properly.

If there is a difference in stats, be it as little as 3 , people will always hunt the highest numbers.
Oh, and those 3
add up, try to do the math for a full set

Disagree. Even though the gear progression is limited it is simply the beginning.

Look at this:

Most people are grinding fractals and asking requirements of other players (fractal level)

I’ve seen the threads about what is needed to get these few exalted items. And this is just the first few pieces.

You say 3% but I don’t trust your math. And you miss the other point. It’s not just the stats that are the problem but also the attitudes that go with it. And this is already visible in LFG chat and the fact that people are just mostly grinding the fractals and basically ignoring the rest of the game in doing so.

Anet already indicated this is just the beginning, so even though it’s not in full yet it’s simply a matter of time. The gear progression is said to continue, just at a slower rate they said….but then they said there wouldn’t be gear progression.\

And another reason I don’t trust your math. No gear progression means 0 stat increases. Even if your 3% was right it still is more than 0 and therefore by definition it is gear progression.

To demonstrate this. If for you 0 and 3% mean about the same, I would gladly invite you to transfer 3% of your income to me since, well, it’s nothing right?

And again, I don’t trust your math skills anyways.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

That’s 3% with all the new items combined.

If you’re talking about items that don’t exist yet, then great, let’s talk about items with 200 power that are coming in 2020.
