Low personal character development
So, in other words, another NPC has quit the game? But taking a middle ground here regarding the lack of depth, that’s pretty common with mmo’s early on in their run. I’m more concerned about the future of this game, the direction they seem to have changed to.
Some mmo’s were excellent early on though, then took a hard turn downward (e.g. SWG, EQ1 etc.). Then others that started out mediocre yet over time polished and improved to the point that they have/had 1000x more subscribers/players than they did at launch (I won’t mention such games here).
But for GW2, that’s something you must determine for yourself and your future with the game, what I think about staying or going is of no matter. I mean I may be critical in my posts on forums, have my own opinions of things, but I only post in hopes of improvements to the game I play. Today I play, can’t speak for tomorrow since it’s not tomorrow yet, yet I can determine for myself when it’s time to stay or go since I’ve been playing mmo’s over 15yrs and some of those for 6+ years on a sub. But to stay or go will have nothing to do with someone else’s opinion.
Happy trails.
This game has next to nothing for personal character development, even something as simple as being able to go fishing, or customize pets, build house
Maybe we could get to build Trahearne a house? Then be his butler/maid once we build it with our money, blood, sweat and tears.
I couldn’t do it. Ultimately I just ended up removing the game today. Free or not,
Definitely not free. You paid $60 or $40 for it (depending on when you got it, assuming no sales). Just because it’s online doesn’t make it any less a paid game.

Yep, money and time invested. Might have even bought some gems. But then I’ve spent $40-60 for games and tossed the cd/dvd onto a nameless stack an hour later. Other times… well I bought like Quake1 on launch day for ~$50, still have it installed. Albeit it’s migrated to my Nexus7 now, but still using those same core files from that original disk, and had it on every hard drive since I broke the seal.

Well, OP, glad to see you finally found out about the craptacular lack of personal story and role-playing elements of this game ! Better late than never I guess, but hey look at this on the bright side !
We get a revamped boss soon…AREN’T YA HAPPY ?!?
Yeah… >.>
and yet in the next update we get another recicled content!

Yeah… I didn’t mention that type of game. Was bad, is bad, always will be bad?
Never played it though, I usually research games before I buy, as I did. Didn’t it go f2p or something? Yet another reason for me not to bother. Even GW2, researched. But now I feel like I’m hanging, it’s becoming different than what it was originally pitched as. I’m not the “don’t know what I want” type of player.
Of course not speaking of hype. Hype is another thing, especially concerning early GW2 development talk by non-anet people. Like, the second coming is here and all subscription based games are dooomed forever to the pits of hell. Perfect world peace and little grey aliens have come to save us forever! hehehe

I stopped reading after your first example of ‘personal character development’ was.. fishing… which has absolutely NOTHING to do with character development.
Northern Shiverpeaks
You say this game has no heart like GW1 because it has no fishing, no customization of pets, no furniture/paintings….I can’t say I remember seeing those things in GW1. Must have missed them all during those 7+ years. Dang!
Well, I guess you could kind of customize your pet in the menagerie. So, I will give you that, if you were talking about how aggressive or dire or playful or hearty, etc. they were. Though, you could let them evolve on their own, as many did…I believe. But, I really don’t have the numbers on that.
So, one out of three….
I hope you find your game nirvana out there. Best of luck to you. =)
Im not telling only about fishing, im telling about problem that feels like my character is running around aimlessly with no real purpose….
Yea, what’s up with the lack of furniture. I mean, we’re heroes of Tyria and we have to sit on the floor like some bum. The most RP’ing I ever do is sleep on that couch in the Black Lion Headquarters. :S
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

There is a pig pen just south of Beetletun that provides excellent accommodation for a nap while waiting on the SB timer. I highly recommend it.
to make more love with characters we are playing,
Ewww. I have 2 charss. DO NOT WANT.
thats the point of MMO, to show everyone how great are you, what u have done, what u earn etc…
It may be for you, it is not for me. While I agree on you that the game lacks heavily in this regard, I don’t think it should be one of their priorities.

But there is no purpose in playing games other than having fun. And I’ve never understood the immersion-people in themepark MMOs. Do you have any suggestion?

“30 fps is more cinematic”

what’s funny is that when(if) they add all that stuff, all most people who are supposed to be interested in this sort of thing are gonna do is continue to sit in a Tavern and type paragraph-long Emotes, rather than actually partake in the Game’s Content.
“Tavern RP” sucks.

Seems odd that you bring up GW1 in this context. GW1 has pretty much the same type of “personal” character development.

Well, turns out when devs don’t listen to the playerbase, and opt for cash instead and quick content…
But, at least story was nice, voice acting was…weird (but at least better than what is supposed to be dialogues in GW2), and you had companions to add some beef to it.
Now if Bioware weren’t such a bunch of wh…kittens (yeah…“kittens” >.>), we could have Mass Effect, in Star Wars…which was the point in the first place you might had, and I’ll give it to you XD
Like I said before, this game doesn’t deserve the “RPG” after the “MMO”.
MMOG sounds perfect to me.

That’s pretty much most mmo’s these days. Who coined it? Lord British. On a game that was very strong an RPG on a massive player scale. It’s hard to themepark an RPG, as by nature it leads players around by the hand rather than let them develop the personal aspect of their daily surroundings.
One word: Roleplay.
Personal Story have to be main personal development, but its paintfull how short its, they should bring some little personal story missions every time with some living story, housing + house crafting, drops, blc items ? Yes it would be next “to do” in this “endgame”
Interesting…. many of the things you call out as being needed in GW2 for ‘character progression’ do not exist in GW1.
GW1 does not have fishing. It does not have personal housing for us to build. Sure, we could build our guild halls, but that was simply purchasing NPCs…nothing spectacular there really. Nor could we customize pets… (unless you’re referring to evolving them, and really that’s not that immersive…go death leveling yay! ha.)
There was no dueling, there was no inspect feature. Yes, we could link our gear, but not in all chat because of spamming issues. People could not click on us at will and check out what we had on.
Yes, you could /rank and /zrank to show off your pvp or zaishen rank; however due to some people’s abhorrent behavior they had to put a timer oh how often you could do it. I can understand why you can’t /rank someone here. They simply didn’t want to deal with the childishness. It’s the exact same reason why we lack so many emotes, and why so many of them cannot be targeted anymore. Blame the player base for such things, not the devs.

Beats the grass.
Lol, that sure reminds me of something.
I can carry all these oversized swords and bows in my backpack; surely a portable chair isn’t out of the question.
