Come on man, the rewards are already easy to get. There are guides everywhere on how to get 30 HoM points in a few hours tops. If you want them that bad then go buy the game and play it. But you are certainly not entitled to those rewards just because you don’t feel like playing GW1

Just in case – GW2 only player.
I concur with everyone who did play GW1 and earned these skins. They paid for it, they worked for it. Let them keep it. If you want those skins, go play GW1 for the skins like they did.
I know if I wanted those skins, that’s how I’d do it.

PLZ Consider making Hall of Monuments assets available by other means

Hall of Monuments in GW2 is inaccessible for most current GW2 community and it’s a shame as lots of GW2 assets are locked behind a wall which is no longer relevant.

Giving veterans GW1 players an extra bonus and motivation was a great idea 4 years ago but now it feels an obsolete system, the chance that non GW1 players will pick up the game and invest tons of hours for the skins is very low, probably close to 0. I think that giving the veterans GW1 players free and 4 years early access on the skins is enough of a bonus.

Plz consider giving access to Hall of Monuments in GW2 by other means that doesn’t include GW1, it can be the gem store, game content, a collection achievement, all options are fine.

What do you think?

HOM awards are for GW1 players. The opposite is to abstract this to a rule saying everyone can get anything any way they want. However, its just skins, if you can get a skin any way you want then whats the point of the skin, it represents nothing beyond being a bunch of pixels.

If Guild Wars 1 was offline barring people from playing it, I would be okay with adding a new method. But it’s not, so no. you can go earn them the old-fashioned way. Honestly, it’s massively cheaper to get some things now (especially the armor points), so you complaining about things being “locked” when many of the points are easier to get than they were doesn’t hold weight. And I’m usually one of the ones in favor of multiple ways to get things.

Just make em pay … 1 core + 1 xpac cost… I mean the skins are not worth it. I used to use the heritage heavy on my norn just as a unique skin. But it was so ugly.

If someone wants to spend 80 bucks or so to unlock 30 relatively skins, have at er. Supports Anet, gives you accessibility. It’s not like they are the ‘goblet of everlasting life’

They are simply items that are prestigious for some because it represents a long journey for them. Nothing worse than a game disrespecting someone effort in game by have someone else buy the items. If they want to buy things, buy other skins, they are just pixels in that case.

Because you personally think it’s ugly that affects its worth for others? Nothing in this game is the ‘goblet of everlasting life.’ I think the ascended fractals backpack is ugly, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have merit to the people who worked hard for it. How you feel about how something looks is a terrible way to evaluate how others get it.

IMO the best thing about the armour sets (and to a lesser extent the weapons) is that they’re free to apply. That makes them great to use when levelling up to cover an ugly skin, or just for variety.

Whether they look good or not is a matter of opinion (I actually like the heavy skins, not a big fan of the light ones though, at least not as a full set) but at least it’s another option.

Of course the downside of doing that is that by max level I’m bored with most of them and excited to use other skins instead. I think the only one I regularly use on a level 80 character is the Fiery God’s Vambraces which my main wears.

Not only no but hell no…

People who supported Guild Wars franchise from the beginning should have something to show for it. It’s already easy enough that 4 years after GW2 has been released that people can buy GW Prophecies + Eye of the North and obtain gear in GW2…. That’s very generous of ANET to do imo.

If anything, I would like to see more added from GW1 to the Hall of Monuments vendor and a couple of titles to be ported over.

Legendary Defender of Ascalon, imo; should be a portable title from GW1 to GW2. Even with the relatively recent changes to it, it’s still a pretty remarkable accomplishment. Those who acquired it before the change definitely deserve to have it in GW2 to brag about.

Rainbow Phoenix, would have been an awesome pet to have ported over to GW2. Shows that you made some nice progress in your Hall of Monuments in GW1.

In no way, should GW1 players be punished by having their years of dedication and loyalty to the franchise vaporized… because a couple of new players want to feel like veterans without the hard work….

said some stuff’

Because you personally think it’s ugly that affects its worth for others? … and said some other stuff

Earlier in the thread I noted I had 2 accounts with this unlocked already.

But …. seeing as you think I based my judgement on the cosmetics or my personal opinion, versus the accessibility, let’s take a look at the issue closer.

Release dates
The Guild wars 1 release date was April 28, 2005

Guild wars: Factions was released April 28, 2006

Guild wars: Nightfall was released October 26, 2006

Guild wars: Eye of the North was released August 31st, 2007

Guild wars 2 was released August 28, 2012

Requirements
You required 1 core game, plus 1 expac: Eye of the North in order to unlock the hall of monuments. Players who achieved this at the time of release had to pay $50 per core, plus $50 for expac.

My suggestion about this topic
The worth is based off of the fact that your primary suggestion is to have someone fork out for the core + and expac and do the work (which the present cost of gw1 core, plus eye of the north is cdn $21.99 for core and $21.99 for expac on steam atm). Great. We’ve come to a total of $44 and you can start getting to work. The game itself is 11 years old, and has a sequel which is almost 4 years old.

In order to keep players playing the current version of the game and unlock it, I suggest a higher price of $60-$80 to unlock the skins. Seems fair to tack on 30-40 for time invested, now.

I would not suggest to players to purchase the old game, and run around and do it yourselves … at this point in the games life cycle, it makes no sense to drive players off of your current game. Instead, it does make sense for current players to have to pay the same if not more for accessing some skins.

My personal opinion
It’s still ugly, functional yes, but ugly. And yes, I can voice my personal opinion on a public forum, that is exactly what it is intended for. It does not have anything to do with the worth or where I drew the number from.

You’re forgetting about the hours that players spent in the 1 Core + 1 xpac to get those Hall of Monuments rewards, not just the cost of the game itself.

I only attributed 30-40 for time spent. I know that a rip off, but players won’t pay 150-250 to unlock a few skins

I am a GW1 vet I guess as in I did have the game a few years before GW2 came out and I did earn 35 points to have a specific title (for my Rev) as well as all the other goodies.

Having said that, I wouldn’t mind if they did give you another way in GW2 to access these skins. HOWEVER I would only agree to such a thing if they also offered NEW rewards be they skins, minipets, toys or whatever for those vets who already have the others unlocked. In order for players such as the OP to obtain access to these new skins/whatever they would have to go back to GW1 and do everything that we did.

Is this a compromise we could all live with lol?

And like I siaed, i think that 4 years early access and freebies is enough honor. they can make GW2 only players work hard for what you got for free, why do care so much?

We didn’t get it for free. We bought GW1 (many of us all three campaigns and then the expansion), and we also bought GW2. We also farmed (mats, gold, minis, missions, vanquishing and HM, pvp, etc.) to earn all of our HoM points. No one got them for free.

We also paid more than 3 times as much.

Want the HoM items? Buy GW1+EotN and earn the items like everybody else.

Last time I checked you can get the complete set (Core+Factions+Nightfall+EotN) for around $45 and just Core+EotN is around $30.

You can already get an easy 3 points just by linking accounts.

TIP: Make a Ranger so you can display your pet (and a rare one later on) for an extra 2 points.

All feedback is welcome, but when you ask for feedback you want it from variuos types of players and when the feedback is from GW1 vetrans only, its getting generic and predictable. I would like to know what GW2 only players also think.

I’m most certainly not a GW1 “veteran” – I never played GW1 until a year after GW2 was launched.

But I wanted to experience GW1, for the lore, and also to get HOM rewards. So I bought it. And played it. And mostly enjoyed it.

I have no rose-tinted glasses about GW1. It was 8 or 9 years old when I played it the first time, and it felt clunky and limited in many aspects. And some things I didn’t enjoy. But I did enjoy much of it.

So if you want HOM rewards, do what I did. Buy GW1 and play it and earn them. You might actually like it.

It is not a matter of elitism… in all video games, the more you play, the more rewards you get. These rewards are purely aestetic, and gw2 is far from being the only game offering aestetic shinies to reward the loyalty of players who played another game of the developper. It has never been an issue anywhere, players like the idea and support it everywhere.
There is NO concrete wall to these rewards, you can do like people who have them and get them for yourself. Actually, it will be easier for you now than it was to them. So the system is actually ANTI-elitist.

Also, there is the matter of trust. How could you possibly trust Anet and its marketing strategies if they cannot keep their promises?

Neither Anet nor the immense majority of players want HoM rewards to be accessible to gw2-only players. It will kever happen, it cannot happen. You want HoM? Do as the others did, there is no reason why you can’t do it. This topic is all about whinners who don’t want to do what others did for the same rewards.

Honestly, the only thing that annoys me about the HoM achievements is the fact that 500 AP is gated behind them. You can keep your skins and titles, I want a way to get that AP.

And for the record, this is coming from someone who bought and played GW1 and the first 2 expansions, but I got nothing because apparently I didn’t support the game for the very specific window of time required for these rewards.

The window is still open. Go and get EotN. It’s €15. As much as 1200 gems, which is fairly cheap for that many skins and AP.
The window of time is only specific as it had a release date and did not exist since the dawn of time. It is still open and there is currently no reason to think it would close any time soon.

Slash, I was in the same spot as you 3 years ago but steam had eotn on sale for like $15 so I got it and was able to link my accounts and got my hom points easy. I think steam has eotn for that price still. you can get easy 300 ap this way if i remember as long as you got the gw1 titles and stuff.

Now for the OP if you ever need some platinum or minis you can ask nicely in Spammadan/ kamadon lols. This trading hub city has so many people there traiding. I remember someone literally, was giving away 60 minis to people.

Lets be honest guys its not a few hours. LoLs its close to 140 hours not counting the learning curve and gearing and elite hunt process and getting good heroes with gear. Tons of guides, but time investment is huge. It looks simple in youtube and guides but when you actually do them you’ll be lost.

I actually go back to gw1 with guild mates to help with story mission both normal and hardcore since they hate hunting for elite skills and learning how to kill shiro XD.

I dont mind to sink the time in the game that I actually care about, i just dont think i need to sink time in a 11 years old game wih very low popoulation. 4 years ago it was somewhat reasonable, now its not.

Well then you have your answer. You don’t think it is worth it to do what you need to do to get these rewards. So the actual rewards are not worth it to you.

Akin that to masteries. If you don’t think ley line gliding is worth having then you are not going to sink the time into getting the mastery. Same principle.

And “reasonable” in this instance is a very subjective term.

Only problem in your logic is that GW1 and GW2 are not the same game. Like I saied i want to play GW2 to get access for GW2 content and goodies. I dont even understand why players here so strongly push me to play GW1, you even admit its just a time sink process any one could do, so why not giving me and aquivilent option in GW2, why do you care in which game the effort and the time sink will take place? Make it a time effort, make it hard, make it costly, but kitten make GW2 content avilable for GW2 players.

If you played gw1 and did stuff you got rewarded for your work input in gw2. If you don’t play gw1 then no. Just no. Nothing gw1 should be obtainable in gw2 just bc you don’t want to work for it like the rest of us did.

What do you think?

Why don’t you just… go and play Guild Wars? It’s still accessible, you can still earn the rewards… etc. etc. etc. You may consider it a useless idea, but many of us put a great deal of effort into Guild Wars, and the HoM items are a small reward and acknowledgement of that. There are thousands of items available to those who haven’t or choose not to pursue HoM points in Guild Wars, so I don’t see why they should be devalued for us purely for your own sense of entitlement.

EDIT: Of course, I’d be perfectly happy with them being added to the Gem store provided two things happen:
1) The base price for the first tier costs $500, and each additional tier adds an additional cost, up to $50,000 for the full 50 points. $50,000 dollars seems like a reasonable price to pay for what others spent 5+ years earning through actual effort.
2) That any item bought via the above pricing scheme adds a little marker to people’s names so everyone know they don’t deserve those items and have more cash than sense.

I’m obvious being sardonic at this point.

Simple question back to OP, with the assumptions of there will be a GW3 in say, 2 years? and you’ve got all legendary weapons and armors.

And the Dev team decided, “we are gonna give all GW3 players a few free ‘heritage’ skins base on the set of legendary achievements they have completed in GW2.” Then someone that only plays GW3 comes along, and ask “give us access to those ‘heritage’ skins”.

How do you feel? and how would you respond to their request?

I think Halls of Monuments, must remain a special place. This is what GW1 players accomplished and what remains of it.
However, it should be used more and have new uses added to it. My suggestion is that Anet add crafting stations to the Hall. That would make it a far more important place to go to and give you back the functionality that crafting in WvW had, almost. The fact that it is an instance, would not allow meeting other players like in WvW, unfortunately, unless it became a real place in the mist.
That way, Hall of Monument, becomes very special. A symbol of past accomplishments and a reminder of what was, and utilitarian as well.
I would like this idea discussed more frequently and at higher levels in the dev team

the elitist concept is “if you want this, then spend money”
I’m a firm believer anything in GW2 should be obtainable by playing the game, and not by spending more money.
If someone has to actually buy GW1 then he is forced to spend money, that is why I am against it.
Like I said I understandthje feeling, but it is still elitism. If I buy a pair of expensive jeans, and the next week they’re on sale, am I going to be mad at the people who got them for less money/effort that I did? I don’t think so. Specially if they go on sale years after I got them in the first place.

Considering OP was talking about the skins being put in the gemstore, I don’t think money’s the issue so much as wanting to get things without the work.

Quite honestly, the only skins I ever really hear people wanting are the Fiery Dragon Sword (something like 10 HoM points) and the Fellblade (23 HoM points).

A simple solution would be if GW1 and it’s expansions were added to the gemstore in GW2. That way you could save up to buy the first game, however I’d argue that would be too great a hit to ANet’s revenue. The thing is, the items were originally meant to be a thanks to those who were there from the Searing. Hence the name ‘heritage armour’. The fact that GW1 isn’t shut down and those items are still obtainable is in ANet’s favour. I could understand people being angry if GW1 didn’t exist any more but it does and will until GW2 closes down from what I’ve read over the years. It was one reason I didn’t worry as much about not being able to transition to GW2 at launch, as much as I wanted to. I knew during those 3 years that I had items earned and AP waiting for me when I finally got the game. Considering I missed out on LS1 and had to pay for LS2 due to starting last summer, I’d say I got a fair exchange.

Rainbow Phoenix, would have been an awesome pet to have ported over to GW2. Shows that you made some nice progress in your Hall of Monuments in GW1.

Not afraid to say that I dream of the day that I can go back to my homelands of Cantha and find my rainbow phoenix again ;_; Was my hands down favourite pet other than the Black Moa (of which I preferred the GW1 design).

People in this thread keep confusing “elitist” with “exclusive”.

  • The HoM rewards are exclusive, because they are designed to be that way — to benefit GW1 veterans (whether long-time vets or new ones) and only GW1 vets.
  • They are not “elitist” because anyone can choose to do exactly the same steps to get them.

Now, there’s an argument to be made that there shouldn’t be exclusive items in this game (or perhaps in any game) and ANet seems to go back and forth on this (although that is a long story). However, I don’t buy that argument — I think every game should offer a small fraction of exclusive rewards: for mastering certain content, for time spent, for participating in various game modes, etc. I think it makes the game more interesting and more appealing to greater varieties of people.

I say that as someone who is unlikely to get a lot of the ‘exclusive’ rewards currently in the game

Did you buy Heart of Thorns?

This also isn’t even how the game works now. Even if you buy gems with gold, that means some other person paid for them. You were able to obtain gem store item X because some third party paid for it for you.

The feeling I will never understand is: " I earned this, so I dont want others to have it with less work". I couldnt care less if others have it, it is not going to take away what I did to earn it. They are taking nothing away from me. I dont need to go around showing off what I got. Im just happy I got it.
I remember the core game went free after a few months after I got it, and I couldnt understand why were people angry at it. I kniw we paid for it, so what? Things change and they will keep on chaning all the time.
That is the elitist way of thinking Im refering to.

Great, I got all the feedback from GW1 vetrans, sad thing is that GW2 only players probably doesnt even know what Hall of Monuments is and wont bother with this post.
Well… Whatever.

You asked for feedback. I’m sorry you don’t like that others disagree with your point of view. The summary has been:

  • It’s currently possible to get the rewards via the same methods everyone else has used.
  • The game makes it possible to solo and a large fraction of players did so even before GW2 was announced, so it’s a moot point how many people are playing. Still, there are a substantial number around 24/7.
  • ANet offered the rewards specifically as a way to honor GW1 veterans.

I can understand that you want the skins. What I don’t understand is why you don’t want to play GW1 to get them, like everyone else has done.

All feedback is welcome, but when you ask for feedback you want it from variuos types of players and when the feedback is from GW1 vetrans only, its getting generic and predictable. I would like to know what GW2 only players also think.

And like I siaed, i think that 4 years early access and freebies is enough honor. they can make GW2 only players work hard for what you got for free, why do care so much?

The HoM rewards are less about how much work they put in and more about loyalty. They’re an achievement and reward for being with the company so long, travelling from the first game to the second. If it means that much to new players, they can buy GW1 and earn them, but that isn’t the point. They’re items and rewards of GW1 veteran loyalty plain and simple.

I could list numerous things that ANet have changed over the years to allow people to earn rewards more easily or changes to gameplay that have made things easier for people. I’ve been on the ‘rough’ end of a lot of them and quite honestly, I don’t care how easy it is for other people to get x because it doesn’t take away from the work I put in. I bought HoT a couple of weeks before f2p happened, but I didn’t care because I knew I’d have wanted the expansion any way and didn’t want f2p restrictions.

However, this is a matter of a lot of people having invested a lot of time and money over the last few years and the request to change the method of obtaining those items completely. I’d argue that the main reason they’re still selling GW1 copies is because of HoM rewards. It gives people a reason to go back to the original game, as well as experiencing the lore which, sadly and realistically, only a handful of people care about enough to go back to the first game for. However, a lot of people get into the lore while working on HoM rewards and come back to GW2 with a greater interest in current lore. To me, this is a good thing.

I like that ANet are rewarding players with their loyalty to the series with a small number of cosmetic skins and titles, which I might add I have never seen anyone brag about or show off. The only comments I’ve had from other players about my HoM skins is generally ‘where can I get that flaming sword, it looks so cool!’. Heck, if you want a flaming skin without buying GW1, Volcanus says hi.

I don’t run around in maps yelling ‘LOOK AT MY GWAMM TITLE, YOU SCRUBS’ nor have I seen anyone else do so therefore I question your claims that people ‘show off’. If you feel that people using the HoM skins/titles are doing that by simply using those skins and displaying those titles, it sounds more like the issue is how you’re perceiving things rather than other people having those items/titles. FWIW, I use the GWAMM title on my Necro because she’s essentially my main character from GW1 who was my first GWAMM. To me, it fits her biography that I made up in my head. I’m sure it’s the same for other people, or those who use certain skins/titles to fit in with character aesthetics. As for the Fiery Dragon Sword, I just like the fact that it lights up darker areas of the map like caves. I’d be all for lantern weapon skins that would do the same thing (or a lantern item).

What you’re talking about isn’t elitism, it’s more entitlement from the other side imo.

Also +1 to Black Iris Flowers regarding the loyalty side of things. Couldn’t have put it better myself.

You’re welcome!

I certainly hope it doesn’t close any time soon either.

So if people don’t care about showing off the skins or whatever they have, and think that othrs having the items doesn’t devaluate their own items or how they earned them, then why they care at all? How does it hurt you that others can get the items for less work/money?
