When you completely explore a map, or certain leveling area, you receive so pretty awesome rewards.

What I noticed is you may get rewards based on your level.

When I completed the char starting area at level 30, I received level 26 items. But, when I competed the human starting area at level 15 I believe I received much lower level items.

Can anyone confirm this?

If this is true I’m concerned that it might be more practical to wait until level 80 to complete other areas off your standard leveling route.

I’m sorry but if that’s the case, I’m fairly certain things aren’t WAI.

As a level 80 completing the Sylvari starting area last night, I received level 14 green items. Definitely not “scaled to your level”.

This is incorrect Regina. I tested this on a few zones. In all cases, my level 80 received items of the same level as the zone. In addition, the cash reward was fixed. I got the same reward on a level 17 alt as I did on my 80. The only thing that changed was the XP. I got 10% of a level.

Hardest part I have on completing zones is trying to locate that one POI that I didn’t go to previously. Wish there was a way to filter out World Map legend items. i.e. filter out all hearts, waypoints, and vistas, that way I can just focus looking for the little empty squares.

In my experience, they scale to your level in that items can drop all the way up to your level. I did all 5 starter zones, and finished around level 30. I continued to receive mostly low level drops throughout but I did occasionally receive level appropriate items, both from drops and map completion boxes. Story quest items seem pegged to the level of the quest, though.

Regina, if rewards and drops are supposed to be scaled to the player’s actual level, the team may want to look into it to see if there’s a bug. It may be causing the items to be the character’s scaled level in a zone, rather than their true level.

Otherwise, if this is intended, it’s no big deal. It would be nice to have another incentive to explore low level zones, though.

I don’t want to call out an ANET person but this is not correct. I completed 1-15 zones at 80, and the ending chest was still low level stuff.

It doesn’t seem to be happening consistently though. As an example I was running through Queensdale on my (at the time) mid 50s Elementalist. About half the time or more I would get level 1-15 items as drops and the rest of the time it’d be things closer to my level.

Actually, I’ve fully completed the Charr area now, with 3 different Charr characters, and each time I received level 26 items… regardless of being on level 13 and level 16 characters at the time. This is also true for my boyfriend who completed the event at the same time as I did with characters he made to play along with mine. The fact that you too received level 26 items from the Charr area completion tells me that …

Rewards and drops are scaled to your level.

..could either be wrong, or perhaps the Charr area is Bugged when it comes to the chest rewards.

To clarify, when drops are scaled to your level, there is a chance that they’ll either be level-appropriate for you or level-appropriate for the content that you’re completing. You’ll get a mix, allowing you to collect zone-appropriate crafting materials and drops while also still being able to find gear that’s appropriate for your character. In general, the chance of getting character-level appropriate gear is better the closer that the content is to your actual level. Since the difficulty of the content increases at higher levels, we want to reward high-level players more for playing through the challenging high-level content that is available more than if they play through the easier low-level content that’s designed to let players learn to play the game.

Additionally, when you get gear at a specific level, it’s not guaranteed to be gear that requires that level to equip. It’s not uncommon to fight enemies a couple levels higher than you, and it’s frustrating to get cool new drops from the enemies and not be able to equip them. Generally, the required level to use a piece of gear is a few levels below the level of the area it was acquired, so that when you get gear as loot, you’re able to equip it immediately.

edit:
About the plains of Ashford giving out level 26 rewards, thanks for the heads up- I double checked, and this area is indeed giving out inappropriate loot. I’ve entered a bug on this and hopefully we’ll have it fixed in an upcoming build.

Could there be some issue Specifically with the Charr starting area completion chest rewards then? It’s a level 1-15 zone, and completing it with characters who are in the intended bracket still rewards level 26 items, same as if you go back and do the zone at a much higher than intended level.

Not really, considering the odds are not that great of it actually scaling to you. It’s only a chance you would get 80 items. The last time I saw an Anet employee give an actual ratio for it was in beta, and it wasn’t even a 50-50 chance. I won’t quote the exact odds they gave as it’s been too long for me to be sure, and the ratio may have changed since beta as well.

Aside from that, if you want the other reason for people not to wait, area clears tend to give you a nice chunk of ore, wood, or cloth. Why wait to help yourself craft?

All drops are random, and may or may not contain “usable” items for a specific character. But so what. Unless you’re only running (1) character, you can stash them as “christmas presents” (oh, boy, just what I needed “a better-rated” (armor/weapon/ring/etc) than I could find on my own) for another. (Or sell them and keep the gold).

I went back and completed all maps in pve (still working on WvW maps) when I reached lvl 80. Currently at 96%.
My findings are very different than those stated. I always got equipment suited to the environment’s/map’s lvl, not my own. Even in cursed shore, an exclusive lvl 80 map, I received lvl 70’s gear.
I thought this is what it was supposed to be. facepalm
