Not true… Especially if the Wildstar Servers are at the same location as the Guild Wars 2 servers… In which case, he’s been bringing down the Wildstar Servers which he has stated over and over again, alongside the Guild Wars 2 servers. He just may have forgotten that they were at the same location, hence he forgot to mention that Guild Wars 2 was being affected as well. In some of his previous posts he had it timed properly where he had stated Guild Wars 2 #offline without announcing that he had forgotten it.

If there is that much traffic TO Anet’s servers – and they can’t handle the traffic and this isn’t a DDoS attack (which I know it is, my gosh the net has been absolutely horrid today even Pandora having problems getting connected) then Anet better pay for larger pipes and stop the throttling of its own game.

I am a computer professional of over 25 years and I am insulted by those who don’t get or don’t want to belive that DDoS attacks are happening, that Anet doesn’t have the right size pipes and blames the player when this overwhelming lag makes the game unplayable which is extremely unfair to the people who have a limited time to game a day.

The size of their bandwidth has nothing to do with it when you have a 100Gbps DDoS attack coming from a sizeable botnet. They could have the most powerful internet connection out there right now, which they likely do, and would still have problems with this kind of amount of data coming in. Could they handle 100Gbps? Ya I’m pretty sure they’ve got the trunk to handle it seeing as there are over 1 million players on just Guild Wars 2 alone at any one point in time. However to handle ALL the players for ALL their games alongside ALL their websites PLUS an additional 100+Gbps load? I highly doubt they could handle that…

this is why i think online game should be linux based not based on msdos made by microsoft. with microsoft you have to always worry about viruses, spyware, malware, and loopholes within a poorly constructed code. with linux there is hardly any worry any of those kinda things it runs like a tank even these days. i’m sorry i just had to mention that cause i’ve seen this kinda thing happen too many times in gw1 and now it looks like its gw2 as well i do hope you guys can bust that sob thats doing this to this game and fix the problem ty.

I’ve posted this in another couple of threads, so I hope I don’t get in trouble for posting it again…but, the net is under attack right now with a big ol’ botnet raging about like a CGI Godzilla. Here is the map from IPViking that shows live action tracing global attacks: http://map.ipviking.com/
The botnet dropped a couple of days ago, coincidentally and unfortunately for Anet, at about the same time as the patch. The path went from China to Israel to Turkey to Eastern Europe to Western Europe, then North America. Traffic has blown up in North America, probably as people are turning on systems after dinner, and the botnet gets to doing it’s thing…whatever it’s thing is. From what I’ve gathered in a quick glean of security sites, nobody has announced a payload, nobody has taken responsibility, and I’m not sure if a sample has been captured.

As to the kid on twitter who is claiming responsibility; I will bet a single malt scotch twice his age, that he is a big braggypants. If you check his timelines, his tweets always happen after a cluster appears on the map. I think he’s watching the live map and taking credit when hits happen.

Actually there are theoretical limitations for Fiber Optics… You are correct in stating that Fiber Optics would likely solve the situation, as long as their ISP actually has the proper fibers setup along with the proper trunk… There is actually a 100 TBps connection out there right now that could very likely handle this load, but it’s highly unlikely that any ISP or Business is willing to pay to have this kind of hardware installed.

That stated, there are 2 limitations to Fiber Optics that are out there… Loss of light due to absorption and impurities in the glass itself, as well as losses due to mechanical strains put on the fiber when bending at a very tight angle, called a cladding region.

Let’s also not forget that there is a limitation in Fiber Optics due to the wavelength of the light that is used because it is absorbed at different rates through different kinds of glass.

Am I a computer professional? Nope… Never claimed to be one… Although I do claim to know at least a little bit, since I’m in college right now attaining an Associates of Applied Science in Network Administration. Is that much? Hell no it’s not, but honestly I don’t really care what you think…

MY Point is this and only this… Which is NCSoft willing to do? Pay to have a whole new trunk and fiber optics network put into place, possibly costing millions, if not hundreds of millions, of dollars? Or have their Security team figure out exactly what’s going on, and at what layer in the protection of their network is failing? The security team effort costs no more than what they are already paying…

Very possible… but then…. he’s been posting his brags and kitteniness the EXACT moment the big major d/c’s happen, talking about them. Right down to the second. You cant get more precise unless he is sitting next to the one doing it. And it would not be at all shocking if, for this type of crime, at least, he was doing it and WAS posting and bragging. After all… the twitter accnt. he’s using is hacked too…………. soo…..

I am getting continuously disconnected as well. Arenanet, it is not our computers!!! Most of us have great connection speed. FIX THE PROBLEM. I bought this game i love, i would like to play it, so at least acknowledge that it isn’t all of us.

I’ll be honest, using this time to catch up on my RvB and Achievement City :P

No, because I’ve DCed or died, or lagged about 4 times in the last hour, and it is not playable. I’m not asking for a quick fix, but rather after 24 hours, maybe a small acknowledgement from anet re: this frustrating circumstance. Knowing programmers, I’m sure it is a colossal computing conundrum trying to resolve the issue asap, and the only people to profit from said frustration is probably energy drink companies providing much needed caffeine to the anet programmers.

Except they have already acknowledged the issue. Hours ago, on their Twitter. They are aware of the issue, but there really is not much you can do against an attack like this.

I’m sure all of us are a little frustrated, but it’s not ANet’s fault – just the fault of whoever’s attacking them. It sucks, but we just have to be patient. The last time this happened with another DDoSer, the attacks lasted for days, but eventually they did stop the guy, somehow.

He’ll probably stop attacking at some point tonight, and then we’ll have a reprieve until he starts again tomorrow, unless they catch him first.

I’m gonna go play one of my nice old fashion destructive NON MMO games….

This has nothing to do with Microsoft. This is a DDoS attack. It’s basically causing more traffic then the Internet ‘pipes’ can hold resulting in lag, delays, unable to login, etc.

You’re partially right with this, and even probably completely right… However, Windows not being as secure as linux CAN be, depending on the distro used and what kind of software you are willing to install in Windows… BotNets are formed by private networks of malicious software, and used to perform actions such as sending spam messages and DDoS attacks. Now, with that all stated… There are more pieces of malicious software designed for Windows than there are for Linux. Also, Microsoft has often left backdoors open so that certain government agencies can gain access to a PC whenever they want.

Now is that Microsoft’s fault? Nope, definitely isn’t… Windows is more commonly used than any other OS out there, so of course the developers of these malicious softwares are more likely to design their virus/malware/spyware specifically for Windows based API.

All that stated, is this DDoS coming from malware designed specifically for some backdoor in Windows? I would actually put my money on the software that ANet is using to test people’s computers that has the backdoor in it… Thus making it worse for every person who downloads their testing and security tools, and is also the set of tools directly under ANet’s nose, which is the last place they are likely to look at…

Atleast wildstar is a terrible enough game for me not to care.

UPDATE The ‘hacker’ said on his twitter account that he is going to sleep. The servers should come back up soon, though, he said “Wilderstar servers probly gunna stay down” but i doubt it because they came back up after he went to sleep yesterday.

ddos attack means denial of service attack. essentially an outside source is sending massive amounts of unimportant data to anet servers to bog them down creating connection issues. btw i do not mind corrections if anything i state is incorrect.

and Anet wont give a rats kitten about this… Just like the months of sending in support issues about one particular server that always has issues.

That real-time attack map is rather interesting; it’s like Star Wars out there! I’m wondering though how to interpret what is the DDoS and not a “typical” attack from China.

Phantasy Star Online 2 got DDOS’d late last month and it was down for about 2 weeks straight, and they’re still having issues. This is getting ridiculous.

If the “correct” size pipe is open to Anet’s servers and there is no spike in traffic other than this game – there would be no issues, but the net is under attack and gaming companies are not comprehending it’s their responsiblity to ensure a viable net.

Civilians can’t do a thing – only those in the “industry” have any voice in the internet any longer.

Ok, let’s say Anet and NCSoft get bigger “pipes” from their ISP. If the DDoS targets Cogent or Level 3 at a particular switch or router then Anet’s pipe size won’t matter one bit.

This whole argument of Anet not having big enough pipes and that will solve the problem is way to simplistic and fails to really take into account the problem.

Welp, the kitten posted a screenshot of his whatever DDoS thing he’s running, said goodnight and left it to attack Wildstar & GW2 all night. So…yeah…might have to check back tomorrow.

Well, if you look at this map: http://maps.level3.com/default/#.U8dCGvldV8E, which is the locations of the various L3 farms, and you compare it to the traffic spikes on the ipviking map; there does seem to be a lot of attacks focused on areas where those servers are.

That said; Anet is hardly the biggest, or most important client using L3. It operates a Tier 1 network providing core transport, IP, voice, video, and content delivery for most of the medium to large Internet carriers in North America, Latin America, Europe, and selected cities in Asia. Level 3 is also the largest competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) and the 2nd largest provider of fiber optic internet access (based on coverage area) in the United States, according to the Wikipedia.

Thus, Level 3 being a target, especially from a massive botnet, seems pretty likely. I’m not sure there’s anything Anet can do about it, honestly.

Oh I’d give an hour max, and the issue will be solved for the night if he has actually gone to bed…. But it will likely just start right back up tomorrow…

A couple google searches and it’s easy to find out who this kid is. He’s already had his info posted by other hackers . I won’t post any specifics but I don’t think it will be too hard for authorities to find this kid.

And to keep this on topic I just tried to log in (very slow) and had 5-60 second skill delays and then a disconnect. At least one of my guildies said they haven’t had any problems all day so…idk I guess they lucked out.
