My guild had a roleplay event last night. We kept it off of the main PvE path, deciding to have it at Podaga steading. We were really out of sight, but it didn’t stop us from getting trolled so hard.

We had people getting naked and dancing in the middle of our event, cussing at us in say, engineers lighting off their fire weapons, and a rogue making us all invisible. We had spam waving, spam sitting, and then just overwhelming spam in emotes. This went on, by the same people, for over an hour. We ignored/blocked the mean spirited people, and reported them when they actually broke Anet policy (the spamming and the cursing), but nothing helped us -in the moment- and ended up ruining the night for about fifteen people.

This type of thing never happened to us before Megaservers. It also doesn’t help that the ‘block/ignore’ feature doesn’t work fully, making it all the more difficult to continue on with our brand of fun despite those who would grief us.

As a guild leader, I’m seeing my community slowly slip away as frustrations mount with the Megaservers. Nights like last night only serve to drive more people away with less of an interest in returning. I’m worried, and I’m losing faith in Anet with their considerable silence and half-broken tools given as some sort of solution.

I just want to know where people are RPing now. I see some in Rata Sum but its often jokey sorta non-serious things, and DR seems to be abandoned except maybe once in a while. Queens Dale, rarely is there anyone in the bar, if anything its only concerned about the train there any more. I just can’t seem to find where everyone went.

I’m wondering the same thing. Unfortunately the answer is impossible since your Queensdale won’t necessarily be the same as mine or the same Queensdale in which people are RPing.

For all I know (and what seems pretty likely) is those say 3-5 RPers who would normally be in the same Grove are now split into 3 different Groves, wondering where the others went.

I want to post this again for anyone who hasn’t watched it. I sincerely hope at some point ArenaNet gets a chance to see this too.

Shouldn’t the mega server mean all our QD’s are the same though? I guess I dont understand them enough but Im on TC, there used to be RP literally everywhere. I’d even be farming in Orr or something and run into a few people on an adventure. Now its just nothing, despite people of the same server supposedly to have priority to join up with each other more.

In theory being on the same server (I’m on TC too, /waves from a different QD) should be enough to ensure that everyone from TC is on the same map instance. It’s probably more accurate to think of all maps as overflow instances with the ‘main’ just being a weighted probability.

Unfortunately in practice it often happens that people from the same server, even same guild are getting broken up into different map instances. So in theory this shouldn’t be happening, but it is.

I have to assume ArenaNet is still adjusting how the whole megaserver is working and will hopefully see it adjusted so that it’s bringing communities together rather than fracturing them apart.

The Megaserver feature kind of really killed off my game experience as a Roleplayer since i kept being sent to near-empty overflow version of the server that have no Roleplayers at all but only a bunch of Metagamers in concentration in a single spot of the map.

Why not allowing the PLAYERS to chose the freaking shard they want to join?

Like Tranished Coat, Megaserver 1 to 999? Wahtever the Megaserver is messing with.

I’l just be Blunt and simple, the Megaserver just kill-off my gaming experience and by seeing how’s it going all th tweaking Anet did on it didn’t help a single thing.

Right now I’m seriously thinking of leaving GW2 for good because of that bosched feature.

I just want to chime in to add support to give people some control over the megaserver issue. I met my most recent guild via random RP convergence in Orr, and the recent addition of the megaserver has utterly annihilated the random bits of RP that I used to always come across in TC.

I’ve logged in around three or four times over the last week. On Piken Square, my home server, I have seen precisely zero RP in Divinity’s Reach and fragmented RP in Queensdale and Rata Sum. I feel like a complete stranger on my own server: I don’t recognise the players who now inhabit DR, nor their guilds and the RP chatter that used to fill map chat and local chat in the game world has been replaced either by silence, or an assortment of different languages that I don’t understand.

I’m not an RPer. I’m not part of an RP guild (though it would appear that it would’ve made no difference if I was). I switched to PS because I wanted to be immersed by the RPing that went on around me. I miss the random encounters with RPers when I’m out exploring; I miss the RPing that went on around me in the taverns and lodges around Tyria even if I didn’t participate, but above all, I miss the familiarity of seeing certain guilds running RP events outside the main cities, something that has now been completely lost because of this change.

I stole a special snowflake’s future by exercising my democratic right to vote.

Consider yourself lucky, then. From personal experience, all RP is long gone at the areas you describe. Instead, if you dare do some RP anywhere now, you get trolled. My guild has already left due to that, there are just 3 of us left. Everyone else went back to SWTOR from which we came, as there IS an official RP server there! Yes, a server… Do you hear us, A-net? A <@#$!?> server

This is basically fortunate (no it’s not) considering that my guild fragments can now RP in party chat instead of local. But of course, that doesn’t stop people swirling around you like raving idiots for like 3 minutes, and then see them type : “HOW DO U WALK?!!?!?!?”

I suppose all good things eventually come to an end…

If you guys are in EU servers, and looking for someRP, you’re welcome to participate or even join our project for a parallel Living Story – Tyria’s Wyld Hunt – Hoping to revive RP at mass with this.

It’s really sad that it’s gotten to this point, considering the RP community is probably even the majority of the community in GW2, it used to be so important for GW1 and ANet took us into account, but now… I dunno.

I’m sure it has been stated before, but Megaservers hurt a large portion of the RP community. Those who don’t have the time/desire for regular, organized RP and want to meet up in cities or commons locations AND the organized groups who get trolled when they try to RP.

Outside of those groups, how many RPers are left? I’ve been trolled (luckily not as bad as mentioned in other posts) and I have to party with my guild mates to RP with them. And it seems like every other time I go to a city, I’m in the “non-RP” shard. Unless a guildmate or friend is on, I’m unable to do what what I logged on to do. At that point, I usually just log off and read a book or watch a movie.

It’s getting more and more annoying.

Asura Krewe RP is pretty active and I’m already in three active RP guilds.

Guilds like GA, FMD, ASP, INQ, PCRS, we all get by and usually just block any trolls who try to mess with us. Takes hard skin to be an rper and to filter out the trolling.

While RP isn’t dead, its still very active and even if we don’t get our own server, we will adapt. What needs to change is this:

1) Able to block players via emotes
2) Block/Ignore feature to block both CHAT and EMOTES
3) The ability to report people who spam emotes and do not use the chat in a way to hide themselves (trust me, I hunt them down, and I will find you.)
4) More report option, we have verbal abuse but trolls know this and have their ways of bypassing it. We need a proper report feature for “harassment.”
5) An ingame ticket system. Why does it feel like this is the only MMO from a large company that doesn’t have an ingame ticket system? Come on, World of Warcraft and Old Republic have them, whats the problem Anet?

So I’ve started trying to get involved in RP recently (worst timing ever on my part), and just to interject some positivity, I guested to Tarnished Coast and found some RP at the champ boar in Queensdale. And then again, when I went to the Grove. I just sort of camped there and read for a while, delighted at having found open RP with no evidence of griefing or trolling. So that’s encouraged me more, and I’m going to try to catch some of the events listed at http://www.guildwars2roleplayers.com/

None of what I’ve just said changes the fact that the community really, really needs the ability to choose what map shard we’re on, and a ‘Roleplaying’ tag that would take priority when sorting players into maps. But the community doesn’t seem to be destroyed just yet.

I absolutely hate the megaserver and what it has done to RP. I’d just started guesting to TC to do RP when the patch hit and was saving up to permanently transfer to TC. It was so much fun then. After playing like a robot doing meta events, gathering for so long, it was a breath of fresh air and brought a new perspective to GW2. Now, it truly sucks big time, RP’ers are scattered on so many servers, the trolls are rampant. I really wish I’d joined a large RP guild earlier so that I could have gotten to know them.

This is ridiculous. Trying to RP, but apparently emotes that people type out don’t get blocked, even if the person who made them is on the list. Why was this overlooked?

On top of it, the RPer’s are getting suppressed from chat while those who emote spam don’t.

I’ve managed to cope with this issue by making a tab specifically for RP, having only Say, Emote, Party, and Squad active.

And for those spammers, since I’m in Rata Sum, they are almost always at the banker area, so they are easy to find and report.

I think the primary reason nobody’s posting anything here, is cause they fear our reaction if the answer isn’t what we expect.

Why was it overlooked that emotes can’t be blocked? It wasn’t. I and others reported this in the beta weekend in which they introduced the emote text system, and commented on it thereafter. True, they did heed us enough to give us custom emotes in the first place (there were none in the first beta weekend), and even to adjust the range so they weren’t zone wide unless you were in a party with the emoter. But they’ve done nothing since despite numerous complaints that we can’t block griefing emotes and we can’t read the emotes we want to see thanks to the dull grey text.

Maybe the programmer that put in the custom emotes left the company and no one wants to mess with the code?

Anyway, my guild’s tending to do out-of-game RP more and more, and small instanced RP when in game. No griefing happens that way.

Sorry to re-post this but I wanted to update you all.

Below is what another unnamed MMO stated they would be implementing before release. Post release they have since recanted this saying it was a lot more technically difficult than they at first imagined.

Since what they are suggesting is exactly what most of us are calling for (some sort of RP weighting mechanism for the megaserver) it might be more difficult to implement than it seems.

ArenaNet might very well be at least considering implementing something like this but it might be harder than we realize.

Anyway, here’s the quote from that ‘new MMO that shall remain nameless’:

‘Players will fill out a questionnaire that describes their own preferred playstyle to assist the megaserver in allocating similar players to their game space. You can specify preferences for roleplaying, age groups, and degree of socialization. By flagging your character as “I want to meet new people and join a guild” you will be put into spaces with other players who are also interested in meeting new people, and with guilds who are recruiting new members. Alternatively, you could specify “I want to play solo tonight”, and the server will place you into a game space with other people who are interested in soloing, so you won’t be pestered with frequent group invitations.’

I appreciate the fact that it very well may be difficult to implement some of the changes that are needed.

However, why they would FORCE a broken system out the door and into the live game on EVERY single zone within just a WEEK and then asking for feedback AFTER this system that doesn’t work has been rushed out he door (feedback that doesn’t even receive any replies) . .

Well, it sorta boggles the mind.

Indeed…

Adding the main cities to Skynet has no purpose. Removing them would’ve saved (at least a part of it) our RP events, and we could get together with our own server there. I really miss the quiet the Grove had on my server for example, and the nice and relaxing RP i used to do. Now, main cities are untouchable for me, as extreme lag, FPS drop and overheating GPU crashes are lurking in every corner…

I agree the cities should have been exempt. As to that quote from the other game, it’s my understanding they still intend to implement it in future patches but yes, it does show it’s more complex than it looks on its face to properly set up such a system.

It remains imperative to do so, however. If the system’s touted as putting players with like-minded people, it needs to actually do so, and do it naturally and intuitively from the player’s point of view.

And then of course, ditch WvW completely, and make it IvI (Instance Vs. Instance). Why keep that intact? If they want to downgrade the game, let them do so, but completely, not only for PvE.

Actually……. they said the Megaserver has nothing to do with the costs, and that the cost difference is negligible.

I’d have to see that quote rather than just take your word for it, but if it’s true, I’d be interested in seeing the monthly average of server zones before and after the MS change (not that Anet would ever disclose such information). I would be highly surprised if it didn’t cut the number by at least half (if not more).

Granted, I’m sure all of those are VMs created on a host farm of some sort, but I find it difficult to believe that the reduction would not translate into cost savings (even if only for future hardware lease reduction). I’m in no way implying this was the MAJOR reason for the MS change, but it has to be reason even if it only translates to the entire game being easier to manage and maintain.

Unfortunately I don’t have a link to the post regarding that. However, he wasn’t implying that the Megaservers wouldn’t save on cost AT ALL. Just that it was not the biggest, nor even a major, factor in their decision to go this route. It seems very likely the purpose was to fill maps to the brink to make the game more “alive” for new players, as they were launching in a completely new market. Having Megaservers ready for China prevents the game from entering that lull state after the initial rush, which is what we saw with the game here (lower level zones becoming empty). And while the massive player counts and zerging of events can arguably be seen as a negative here, a mob/event grinding-based PVE game will work incredibly well for the Chinese market.

There is still some issues with the megaserver.

A few days ago, I went into the map Wayfarer Foothill for a RP event.
At the Horncall Waypoint, I saw a lot of people. From my point of view, it was a guild event (no RP event). I guess they were maybe 40+ people. I pass trough that and went to the rendez-vous point.

Here, I saw a character that I knew to be a roleplayer (but not in one of my guild and not in my friendlist). I sent a PM to one of my contact (friendlist). We grouped together and I joined his “world” where all people were.

Same thing happened two days later on the same map.

So, why I was in the same “instance” of a guild that was not in my contacts (40+ people !!) and was not put in the same “instance” of one of my contact ?

It’s really crappy to need to group … We can’t interact with random people and with contacts we are not sure to be on the same “instance” …

What system do you mean? AvA in ESO is significantly better than WvW in its set up and conception. The issues with it are more issues with the game as a whole.

If you mean the megaserver it has nothing to do with the AvA, it has campaigns which for all intents and purposes are separate servers.

It honestly baffles me that some people are so hostile to roleplayers. I don’t roleplay, but I enjoy making up stories and backgrounds for my characters, and I’ve always admired the creativity of the roleplayers. How can someone NOT like people roleplaying around them? It makes the world feel more real. Sometimes, it’s fun to just stand out of the way and watch the stories unfold.

I’ve seen people say all sorts of mean, offensive, and plain idiotic things about roleplayers. And again, I don’t get it. It’s like hating a person because they prefer books over movies, or because they like the color green. Yet somehow, because roleplayers play the game different, that makes them worthy of bullying.

It really is a shame that the megaservers have made this particular community so vulnerable to trolling and bullying. Arenanet needs to do something about this.

I agree. I’m not a roleplayer but I usually enjoy seeing it when I pass by. Sometimes I’ll just sit and listen/watch as I would an interesting NPC interaction.

As for megaservers and RP. I believe that the number of trolls has gone up because of the megaservers. Its not just about the regular trolls in each individual server being thrown into the mix, the Megaserver system is creating new trolls I think. Its far too easy now for people to be cruel to others when they most likely won’t be seen again.

I agree. There is much more trolls since the megaserver. It’s really annoying to see some people jumping around or using skills when you try to immerse in the roleplay …

And since there megaserver, there are places that we ignore completly just because there is much more trolls there. :/

So, after trying to come back to GW2 after about.. a six month hiatus, solely due to the Roleplay aspect, I don’t think I’ll be staying on the game. Why? Because I’m not in a major roleplay guild, nor do I think that I should have to group up with other roleplayers to actually roleplay.

A massive part of the experience is the ability to meet new people that you’ve never seen before, but when those people are split among several worlds, it makes that almost impossible, or at least very difficult and time consuming.

This makes it so that I really don’t know why I should come back to the game; I was actually invited to it by some friends on another game pre-release, and the roleplay aspect was the most significant part of the game for me. But without that, I really can’t see a reason to come back. I’m sure many other people feel this way, or feel like leaving due to it, so I really hope something is done within a month or two.. and even then, I’m not sure if the community will recover. A community which likely numbers in the thousands, and, IMO, is more likely to buy gems for armour skins, transmutations, etc, than others.

But, well, here’s hoping that something is done quickly, before it (the RP community) dies off permanently, which is likely something that an extreme few would want. And, well, if my writing seems a bit odd, it’s because I almost never post in forums, but I felt like I should voice my opinion.

Actually they can’t do it “quick” because they’re doing nothing.
You can’t do “nothing” quick

Look at this thread.

Count the “huge” amount of Dev-posts regarding our problems.

There’s no wonder people are getting cynically (me included), you know?

It’s (no offense) rediculous and kitten’d up to the top what’s going on here and in most of the other threads in the past where there was massive critic regarding the Mass-Crap.

Looks like the best way to deal with your fans, their problems and critics is to ignore them. Good work.

You know, A-net these threads aren’t getting bigger anymore because the problems are getting smaller. It’s because people are giving up on YOU and your…it would be a shame to call it “help”.

I really really really want to know one thing:

Why isn’t anyone answering to our posts?

Please, dear Dev’s…tell us.

And: Sorry, but the “China ($$$) Release-Excuse” isn’t acceptet anymore (and never was)

From the people I know there are 20 who left Gw2 so far.
21 including me.

I gave up thinking that there will be a good change, but please, please, please dear Dev’s write SOMETHING in this thread.

Why do you keep ignoring us?

They removed the megaserver post from the Facebook too because of the criticism, I am sure. But they know non players and don’t come here so they don’t give a **** about us.

If it were me, I would handle megaserver for RP server as special cases. The other servers all do what they do, but the RP servers are isolated to themselves. Basically, the RP instances would be crammed full of RPers only.

That the closest thing to making as many people happy as possible.

That’s an excellent suggestion Tolmos! I’d just started getting into RP with a friend from TC when the megaserver hit. Bad timing. But what I’d done was so much more fun than do this heart, do this event, map exploration, yadda.
Danica of Anet just posted on the other MS thread that they have a team dedicated to the solution of the MS problems.

If they would just make one per NA or EU strictly RP I’d gladly pay the 30$ US to transfer to it.

They could probably pull this off if they included a ‘server preferences’ area somewhere with the character. Add a sorting box for [RP] as a tag and get deferred to an instance of the zone for RP groups.

Many alts; handle it!

Yeah, this is exactly what has been suggested many, many times before. It’s a good idea, completely reasonable, and fits right in with the technology they say they’re already using to help group people.

And yet now… over a thousand messages later… not one real Dev or Community Manager response.
