[Merged] Ascended Armor Impressions
Honestly, for the sheer amount of work (not play) that will be involved in crafting this stuff, they needed to be MUCH better. I get that they needed to be generic enough to cross races and all… and they look fine… they just need more.
Particle effects that change with dye colors.
Moving parts/animations on the armor.
Maybe different sound effects than regular armor when you move/jump around.
A cape.
Stuff like that is worth devoting the extreme grind required to get this stuff.
I personally remember Sesame Street. One thread about ascended armor, ah ah ah. Two threads about ascended armor, ah ah ah. Three threads about ascended armor, ah ah ah…

I don’t mind the blue Ascended preview, but I hate loincloth leggings.
Besides the helmet I kind of like the Ascended armors. I could go without the shoulder armor fringe thing though that seems really out of place.
Clearly only your tastes matter right op? I think the first 5 actually look much worse than the ascended armor(and I think the ascended armor is ugly). Looks are all about personal taste so if there is just 1 person who likes the armor they put in then imo it’s a success.
Unstable Shield, Unstable Light
Heavy actually looks pretty cool in better dyes. I’m really not in the mood for ascended armor yet though.
I absolutely adore the medium armor on my elementalist.
But hate the light armor (and I hate the light armor because, as always, Asura only got the male version)
(edited by Dingle.2743)
There’s only two things I can’t stand on the armor.
Uneven shoulder armor.
Loincloth legging.
Sadly the heavy male human armor has those problems apparently. So it looks like I’ll have to work around that.
I think it is important to keep in mind that we only have a small (unofficial) preview of the ascended armor to come. It may be delusional, but I have hopes that this preview is not indicative of Anet’s entire plan for ascended armor.

Im sure its will be official, its always been.
I can imagine legendary armor.. Pink ponies and flowers everywhere
I was going to say how WvW was going to become hell with this +Trinkets+Weapons+Bloodlust but then I remembered WvW is the disowned child of Guildwars2.
I don’t quite get why does everyone complain this stuff ruins WvW’s balance when the game mode was never and will never be balanced in the first place. Just the difference in numbers screws the balance, when your squad of 10 gets ambushed by a 50-man enemy army, no Ascended items or bloodlust is going to save you.
You’re absolutely right. You don’t get it.
Just because a mode is slowly made imbalanced doesn’t mean you just say “Oh well, tough” and imbalance it further. Then again, like I said, no one cares enough about WvW, otherwise this destruction and desecration of the mode wouldn’t be happening.

Ascended was never meant to be part of the game, however Anet wanted the end game gear to be hard to get. They wanted people to spend months rather than days getting Exotics, so they added ascended after. There shouldn’t be any new gear for the next however many years after this. So err, deal with it.
That’s absolutely false. You couldn’t be more wrong.
“Everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.” – Colin Johanson
the point of ascended armor is to kitten me off.
The point of it is to unbalance World vs. World even more, because you don’t even need exotic for doing PvE content, let alone ascended.
Basically it would be the most easy if nobody got ascended, because then nobody would be forced to get it, because it wouldn’t influence WvW if nobody used it.
First wvw was never balanced at all and it was not made to be as such it is a RvR where a world fights another for better or worst.
Second you can get ascended items from running wvw only it may make more time but you can still do it that way.
Let’s make the imbalanced even less balanced! Why? Because who cares about WvW!
WvW will never ever be balanced thanks to people like you. It will always be getting the short stick on everything.
Second yep you’re right but the mere fact that we have to is bull. Ascended is expensive and takes ages to make. Richer people will get it faster too, and those who aren’t won’t. And rightfully so. Please enlighten me; why should I waste obsidian shards from my legendary? Why should I have to build armor for fractals to function well in WvW?
People who want their tiers can have them. I’m beyond caring about that at this point. But thank you for making my game harder for me. Thank you for pouring more poison into WvW. I really, really appreciate it.
[sarcasm disengaged].
Sesame Street is over-rated imo, we should have gotten Muppets armor. Would give +1 for Animal armor, maybe make tier creep worth it anyway.
Anet has great heavy armor designs how you can see in his concept arts. However and I don’t know why, they bring us heavy armors that look medium armor and so horrible, Ascended and Aetherblade heavy armor skins are two examples.
The first pic looks a bit too norn-ish for my tastes, but that second picture looks amazing.
Anet told us way back in the day that WvW was not intended to be a ‘balanced’ type of battle. (Still hunting for this. I’ll find it eventually)
Considering there is no guaranteed number of players per world, nor is there any guaranteed player level (or skill), balance (even with up scaling) simple is not possible. Yes, they gave the outnumbered world a buff, but that does not by any means make it ‘balanced.’ WvW is intended to be large scale siege type warfare, which by its very nature is not a “balanced” thing.
Ascended gear needs to be used in the recipe for creating precursors or legendaries for it to truly “bridge the gap”.
I am almost sad that I will never get those. On a human female the light and the medium are nice looking. The heavy just left me cold. That “ribbed” look was just (IMHO) bad. I will refrain from the obvious humorous observation on that heavy armor.
I just had to remove the medium’s helm and those awful asymmetric shoulders and that armor looked like something I would see my characters wearing. And while I do not care for the loincloth look either, at least the medium was NOT a trench coat. The chest piece is still that asymmetric style I do not care for but it is not awful.
The light needs some simpler shoulders and low cut boots. Again, getting rid of the loincloth flap would do a lot to make this a great looking set. The mask is ok, but since I do not show the helms on any of my characters that is not a huge deal.
I am really concerned if they will continue this trend and only put the good looking armor sets into the cash shop – for doubly obvious reasons.
That would be a perfectly acceptable thing to do. Cosmetic skins in the shop.
I must be one of the only ones who actually likes the default crafted exotic armor look. And I’ve been called Loki about 3-4 times because of my preferred color options. (Still can’t find anything that’s similar to the Warrior Elite Dragon armor from gw1 and the armor I crafted grew on me anyways) but I’m also not a big fan of the new armors.
Not really a big deal, but it’s slightly annoying to have to spend so much to craft up to 500, refine all the mats, and then have to use my spare transmutation crystals to get the look I like back (man I hope each piece is 1/6 the cost of a weapon or we get a box for the same price as a weapon).
well, not getting those.

That is epic therefore it will not be added.
Anet could easily have added infusion slots to Exotic gear. Fractals and AR were merely a (very flimsy) excuse for introducing the Ascended gear grind.
I’m certain they will add infusions to other tiers once they feel like getting out content that needs AR or a similar gating mechanic if the outrage is big enough to leave them no choice. That way they can still say that you don’t need ascended gear to experience all the content, while at the same time introducing a smaller treadmill to lower gear tiers.
How fast a treadmill moves doesn’t matter, it is still one.

There’s a flaw in that stance.
ANet seems to want to revert to horizontal progression rather than vertical once Ascended is all out. We’ve yet to see the proposed skill system, so we have no idea if that will work out. Skins have been part of horizontal progression going back to GW. Failing to provide skins that people can feel they are playing to get (not just farming gold to buy gems) is going to sink that part of horizontal progression.
There needs to be a mix of skins so that some can be obtained through play and some can be bought. It can’t just be unappealing skins and back pieces through play. Well, not if they’re serious about horizontal progression as a major component of endgame.
Sans the helmet and the frippin shoulder, it’s really not so bad. Of course, the helms for lot of your other sets also suck imo, and I find it very interesting that you opted to model all of those sans the helms, but not the ascended.
If you’re never going to show it why model it? You won’ts see it anyway, therefore what it looks like is a moot point.
Out of your pictures, the only one I like is picture #6. So, it’s all a matter of taste.

Actually you can’t.
You have to craft your weapon.
What kind of PvP game makes you personally craft your weapon?
It’s amateur hour.
Guild wars 1 heavy armour was (and is still) boss mode Helms looked quite weird most of the time, but the armour… yummy.

Ugh male armors always look so bulky.
I think the only war helm I liked in GW1 was the kurzick… of course… the female elite kurz pants were niiiiiice too.

Aha — there’s the now infamous quote! I can’t believe people still believe the excuses that Anet has given for introducing Ascended gear.
I’m really sorry, but honestly how can someone look at any of these armor (male and female) and think : “yep those are the skins I want to have. I want to bother with obtaining them for the looks”
Seriously. I’m usually the first to jump in and defend some of the decisions Anet makes that are less popular, but ugly is ugly and these armor sets have no business being Ascended and/or requiring any effort to obtain.
I am deeply disappointed. I just don’t understand why they would approve these for Ascended. Not even just Ascended, the FIRST Ascended set ever released. It should be wtf awesome, not complete garbage that 99% of people will trasmute older skins over. I just wish I was a fly on the wall at that design meeting. I need to see the face of the person(s) responsible for this travesty.
Well, I suppose the best explanation is best skins are now gem store purchases.

Well that second one is also the design for the Avatar of Balthazar, a bit too human centric. On the other hand … tier 5(tier 4 would be exotic) human cultural could work.
Edit: Oh right the new armor. I think I’ve finally figured out what I don’t like about them. They all seem too ‘busy’. Having details is nice but too much of a good thing can be bad as well.
I absolutely adore the medium armor on my elementalist.
But hate the light armor (and I hate the light armor because, as always, Asura only got the male version)
That looks so cute, sorry

I quit how I want
Originally they intended GW2 to be like GW1. Everyone would be on an even playing field when they reached level 80 just like you are at level 20 in GW1. Yes, there would still be grinding, but only for the more attractive and prestigious armors, weapons and what not. It’s painfully obvious that they have changed their minds en route and I for one am very disappointed by this. If GW2 had a monthly subscription fee I would have left the game a long time ago.
I don’t think this thread contains one piece of constructive criticism so far all. What looks bad about them? What specifically do you not like? What would make it look better?
“Armor is ugly because ugly” is honestly a worthless post and anet will just ignore the feedback because it isn’t offering a single thing of value.
It’s been more than one year (since the first BWE actually) that I and many others created dozens of threads complaining about armor designs. Since then not a single set seemed to take those critics into account. It doesn’t however mean that all the armor they have released (2×3 sets) are particularly ugly. For example I kind of like the feathered light armor, because unlike a lot of other skirt, it actually compliments the wearers body instead of making it look like your character has an behind that isn’t harmonious with her body. Nonetheless, it’s not a pant like armor.
So I don’t know, if the company who gave us simple and elegant designs like virtualy any armor in GW1 can’t even get half of their sets correctly, there’s an underlying problem.
Edit : Oh btw they can :

I actually hoped at least one of those were going to be ascended models…
Well, I suppose the best explanation is best skins are now gem store purchases.
If it was the case at least I’ll be annoyed by having to farm more to get better skins, which we did in GW1 to get 15k.
(edited by RedStar.4218)
I like the medium. http://i.imgur.com/K7JP1Kz.png
…that character, my main, is an elementalist, sadly. And while I like the look of the light armor on female characters for humans, norn and sylvari… Asura only get the male version.
If GW2 had a monthly subscription fee I would have left the game a long time ago.
-_-
If GW2 had a monthly subscription fee I wouldn’t have come within a city block of considering playing it.
An Asura is cheating…nearly everything can look sort of cute on them.
So, beyond the horrible skins, anyone consider how awful the stats were? 1-5 points to main stats across the set. Considering the time/cash investment to make the weapons, I’d have hoped for more on the armor. Part of the reason that most MMO players stayed on the treadmill was that going up a tier in gear actually made you better. Here we get a marginal increase in stats, with no AR slots mind you, for a ton of effort.
Again Anet fails at balancing work with reward. Don’t give us stuff to do just to keep us busy. Make it rewarding and fun (cuz crafting is awful)
SIGH
I love the armour, next to the heavy orr armor i will finally have another set i will be willing to use.
Love the new not over the top kiddy kitten approach Anet, thumbs up

Just be glad it doesn’t look like this:
some1 start a petition to rework this ugly creature from ground up! I want pants for light armor, been waiting for ONE YEAR and nothing, not a single good looking set. This armor is so disappointing its not even funny…
There’s some 7-ish sets that have pants and no major cape/trenchcoat type thing to cover them for light armours, weather you like them or not however is another story…..

What are you talking about? Only one of the pieces you mentioned are pants on male and female characters, and one pants only on male characters. All the rest are ‘sort of’ pants covered by a skirt, loincloth, or inexplicable attached-to-nothing coat or tunic bottom.

I like them they seem nice and detailed and are not too showy. Look like they could exist in the real world which I like to see.
I hate almost every weapon/armour with particle effects tough so guess I am in the minority when it comes to aesthetics in this game.
I looked at the armors again and on the slimest female norn the heavy armor looks pretty stylish with out the god forsaken helm. Too bad, my norn is light armored

There are plenty of nice skins, both in-game ane in gem shop. And there will be more.
You can’t complain if the weight is going to be more on the shop. That’s how the game was always supposed to be funded.
