I bought one because I realized I could get 3-4 inventory slots back, and I have the worst luck tracking pick uses or which pick is equipped. Four times in the last two weeks I’ve left my Steel pick on when trying to run around Southsun Cove’s steam-vent plains for Orichalcum and Mithril and wasted my time. I generally carried Copper, Steel, and Orichalcum picks, and from time to time an extra if one was less than 20 uses left.
The only other reason was because I’ve been saying a lot that I want to support the game even a little and decided to put my money where my mouth is. Eight months, one Gem purchase . . . yeah I can live with that frequency of spending real money

I won’t buy the new pick cause it makes no sense. At the current gold to gem rate it’s too expensive. It’s more than 22g, and for that amount I can get a lot of regular picks. An orichalcum pick costs 4s so with 22g I can buy 550 picks and since I can use each of them 100 times I will be able to farm 18333 nodes or 2200 stacks of ore. In addition you can get picks via karma so it doesn’t cost you anything at all.
I really don’t see the new pick being worth that much money.

I’m having an extended break from the game at the moment but when a vid on youtube showed the new unlimited pick which was only for a ‘limited’ time I promptly got online and sold my mats to buy one for my main. I’m still not playing, but I just didn’t want to get back to the game in 6 months when there was no opportunity to get one… :P
This seems somewhat counter-productive in regards to getting rid of botting.
I very much agree with this statement. These picks will pay for themselves fast given the amount of harvesting bots do. Now they don’t even have to make a stop to replace the picks anymore.
I plan on playing Guild Wars 2 for a long time and would buy 8 picks if A-net gives us a guarantee that:
1. They won’t be adding any new tier of crafting material or,
2. If they do release a new tier of crafting material, this pick will be upgraded to the new tier (like Ascended weapons).
If I ever buy it (maybe next week, since I want to buy a toon slot first), I’ll probably buy it for the skin and nice animation, certainly not because it’s permanent. You’re looking at it from the wrong direction. Don’t look at it like an unlimited pick with the nice perk of a skin. Look at it like a really nice skin, with the perk of being unlimited.

I just bought one sight unseen on the strength of the amount of forum posting about it. I knew it had to be good. Omg! The nerdgasm was intense when my fire-themed character finally ran through his normal picks and I saw it in action. The only the reason I’m not buying it for another character is the poor guy might get deleted.
Oh, and I don’t care if its soul bound on use. All my characters have individual e-souls and they don’t need to share everything.

I’m saying right now “boy am I glad I don’t have to haul around 2-4 picks on my main, more room for blueprints”. I don’t know, but I did run quick math and determined that comparing it to Ori picks was not reflective of how I spent on picks – I get a lot of mileage out of my Ori picks, but Mithril and Steel picks are my purchases. And I wind up blowing through them fairly fast so . . .

When you pay 10 bucks for this pick you are not buying it to make money. You are buying it for the convenience and animations of it. When I first caught wind of this my first thoughts were what special effect does it have not Oh boy this is going to be a money maker.
The reason it is overpriced is so people wouldn’t complain to much about it being to op. They didn’t intend everyone to get it so they had to make a price that would make people think on if they truly wanted it or not but not be to unreasonable so people could afford it.

The gem prices may have gone up because people flooded the gem store with gold. That happens at events a lot. Like you said, impossible to know withoutthe data though

And you can earn gold with karma, but cannot earn karma with gold. (Directly)
I can appreciate and understand the OP’s post. But for me, I just need one pick (maybe two – my fav alt needs one). It’s all about convenience for me. I hate like kitten when I run out of harvesting tools!!! On some days, I play to just run around casually digging up and chopping down nodes. And if something gets in the way of the digging up and chopping down, I knock ‘em over the head. It’s relaxing…lol.
Anet, you like money, right? Where are the other two tools, dagnabbit! I got my gems in hand! Don’t keep me waiting! ;-)

When PVE culling is fixed, everyone of use needs to get together in game and farm 1 ore node at the same time. I want to see the screen explode. 3000 players using at the same time.. My graphics card might melt.

You would be surprised if they ever announced how many of each item they sell monthly. Would make you think about what is worth for you and what is worth for others. Id bet they sold at least 5,000 picks on the 1st day. And if I had to pick a number of how many will be sold till the end, that number would be above 100,000 (we have no idea on the number of active players and will never have, since Anet wouldnt want people comparing their numbers to WoW, but depending on the number of active players Id raise that ammount). Yeah, sir, they will make at least a million dollars of the item you say is not worth and people will not pay.

The price tag is fine for the perma pick but since we all have alts and love to play on all of them we have no need for such a large tag with “soulbound on use” when it’s much easier to just buy the picks we need and it’s not exactly expensive.
