Mounts- Why or why not should they be added?
Some professions, like the Mesmer and Guardian lack a passive movement speed skill. Not that I support of them having this but I do see a lot of complaints on this issue. In my opinion, if they ever do add mounts with movement speed they should keep it at 25% to be balanced with other professions that have a skill that grants passive movement speed.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
“Mounts” already exist in the form of the Witch’s Broom and the Sonic Tunneling Tool. Fundamentally, I have no problem with more of these cosmetic movement devices being introduced, so long as they don’t grant an innate speed boost.
That said, I do agree that Mesmers and Guardians (to a lesser degree) badly need a perma-25% speed boosting skill or trait.

ah, thank you, didnt see that was there!
Mounts in GW2…
well if they are ever introduced I’m guessing they would just be cosmetic. Maybe some basic speed skills, but nothing more than any professions got already. No combat option.
If that’s how they were introduced I’d like it. I really like cosmetic additions.

I think that adding more things like the Broom stick they added would be awesome, but i dont think they should add anything that has speed buff and especially not flying mounts. So cosmetically, yes, speed wise, no. but love the idea keep em coming!
Join us and RISE to the challenge!
I really like the idea of customizable mounts. They don’t need to have a speed increase, I really just want more stuff to collect. Maybe costume brawl stuff like the broom or silly things like the sonic tunneling tool are nice ideas. Heck, if there was a profession where you craft golems of all colors of the rainbow, I’d totally max it out and just leave rows of them around for people to find and sit in.
…. Rainbow costume brawl golems?
At the end of the day people like collecting/customizing stuff and I don’t see any harm in it so long as it can’t be used to give an advantage in pvp settings.
edited for spelling cause I am full of pasta brain tonight xD

The only way I see ANet giving us “Mounts” would be how they did it in GW:Nightfall. We had the tunneling Wurms that HAD to be used to cross certain parts of the Crystal Desert and you had to go to a waypoint to use them. They did same thing w/ Siege Devourers in EotN. If we ever get mounts, I’d say they will come when the Crystal Desert is opened to us and I’d say that won’t be till LS4.

To think a bit outside of the box: what if instead of mounts that were actually bought and used just to get around, what if they were instead environmental weapons during map events?
Like a charr tank raid on a Flame Legion stronghold, use human gliders to fly over centaur defenses or drop bombs on them, ride with some norn ‘dolyakboys’ to round up the herd!
Though, more cosmetic mounts like the sonic drill and broom are fine.
Also, to those who say waypoints are the end all:
Waypoints do not unlock account wide, and some of us don’t want to fight our way through mob after mob after mob to get to our next objective.
I think giving mounts with movement advantages will trivialize open world exploration a bit, though I guess it depends on what they offer, exactly.
I like the idea of fun, cosmetic mounts like the broom, that don’t offer any advantage.
Maybe it wouldn’t be a problem to have mounts that give you a 15-25% speed boost, though. As long as they can only be used in PvE, that is.
Mounts would be a WvW item (beause thats where the most unnecessary running happens) that can only be used out of fights. An should be a little harder to control – I dont want to see a sylvari do a JP on a huge Grass Wolf. We already have faster running speed out of battle. And since it would sell very well in the Trading Post this might come sooner or later.
What if mounts where racial skills?
add this to the current mount thread instead of more clutter.

Some of us have older rigs, in my last MMO, they had mounts and apart from the fact that those were bloody expensive, I could hardly get into the capital city without dropping down to 5-6 fps.
We have waypoints, swiftness buffs and no map is really that big that you can’t run from one side to the other in 2-3 mins.

This is my post copied from a previous 22 page mount thread. Just a bit of fun.

Mounts would add a terrible mess : visually, lag in WvW… Not to mention balance has been done including movement due to cripple or other slow and root conditions applyable.
Hence it would be useable only in PvE (certainly forbidden in PvP as WvW) but there’re waypoints all others the places.
To conclude : due to waypoints and balance in WvW >>> no mounts
Not another Mount thread – jeez. There were no mounts in GW lore.
No mounts please. Other games with mounts are a mess.
It’s big, bulky and ugly.

Haven’t they already said ‘no’ on this… I don’t see the charm of ponies and horses and whatnots when everyone would have one.
………….15
Beating a dead mount. ;_;
But anyway..
I can see where a mount would be desirable. Not every class gets a good swiftness/speed-boost combo, and it’s well known Warriors are superior in this regard. Between Discipline trait and warhorn, I’m pretty much always max speed buffed. Buuut, that’s not fair to other classes.
So, thoughts on how it could work:
Starting a mount should take time. A 1-second call plus the mount’s approach animation. (In essence, a 2-3 second cast.)
They cannot be summoned in combat. If you get hit, the mount throws you and runs off, leaving with Knockdown status for a second.
The benefit is the +25% movement speed bonus that appears in some classes. Attacks are replaced with “spur” skills that can give swiftness buffs, maybe even to a small area. It’d be kinda cool to have a little “battle commander” presence and giving swiftness to others while riding a mount. That also leaves room for cosmetic skills for gem-store mounts.
Mounts are large. Larger than Charr. Larger than Norn. And Charr already have notoriously bad footing. Mounts will be very bad for jumping puzzles, slipping off spots they can’t stand on. No Skyrim horses here, yo. When a mount is summoned, if it can’t follow your path in a straight line (no jumping) for range X (1500? 2000?) the summon will fail.
Mounts are unusable in PvP. WvW is debatable in my mind, but it would make purchasable mounts feel like pay-to-win, which could be eased with a high-gold-cost generic Riding Dolyak mount or something, making it available to everyone. Or having a time-limited WvW-only item available for free from a headquarters vendor.
Yeah, that was mostly an exercise in what if, I’ll be honest. Leaving he argument at “lol no mounts” or “no lore” or “rageno WoWstar” is appropriate, but weak. We can investigate the options, in the least, before we declare “it’s not right for GW2, waypoints are fine.”
Is it going to happen? Nope. We might see more non-utility toys in the shop, but that’s about it.

Anyway, mounts are not something that have been present in the GW lore. To add them now would be… odd. It would add that ‘one more thing’ to the people already kittening that the writers are screwing up and/or ignoring the existing lore of the game.
Outside that, they would provide no useful functionality. With the current design of the game, mounts simply are not needed as a means of transportation. All classes have traits or skills that offer speed boosts, though not necessarily passively.
Cosmetically speaking, they’re simply going to be a pain. Oh, I know the broom and the drill are technically mounts, but they are also extremely simple. If mounts were implemented, they might start out simple, but eventually people are going to want that rainbow trail footprint pony or that sparkly golem or some fiery hellhound. Something with particle effects, something “legendary.” We can’t see through the particle effects we already have, let’s not add more… Not to mention the associated lag.
After that it escalates to “we want more functionality” “we want to battle” etc etc. We’ve already seen people calling for these types of things in other mount proposals. Speed boosts, flying, mounted combat, etc etc.
If they give an inch, players are going to demand a mile.

I hate this debate so much. I have never felt least need to have a mount, and I know ANet is against it as well. Way Points are their answer to traveling and we should be happy with that.
I agreed with this, until MegaServers messed up how Way Points function. It is not longer necessarily a question of, do I want to run, or do I want to spend 1.3 -3.4 silver to get where I’m going. Now the question is, when I try to get where I’m going, will I actually even get there? Transportation is no longer reliable in any way, meaning transportation alternatives become more appealing. If I can run there in half the time on my chocob… er, moa, maybe it’s worth it to do that instead of fighting the Way Point system which could just as easily dump me on the other side of the map depending on contestation which I can’t even see from here.
The other question is, what are the mounts? There are no horses. Centaurs don’t count. There are Moas, there are Dolyaks, and that’s pretty much it. Dolyaks are pack animals and kind of big for mounts, even for Norn. On that point Moas are kind of small for Norn and Charr. But if I were a Charr I should want to be able to run at mounted speed anyway. What happens with the mount if you enter into combat? How do you activate the Mount? Does it take up an inventory slot? Is it a tonic? Can I just activate it or is there a cooldown? Does it have a duration?
It’s just too complicated, and not nearly the simple, “just give it to us cause we want it,” question that so many people ask.

Due to the resources that would need to go into mount design (since the different races would need new animations for riding the mounts and the skins would need to adapt to each race), the only way that they will implement them is as gem store items.
In that event, they would also be unable to provide you with any type of speed enhancement because that would be a gem store fiasco and a public relations nightmare.
Basically, they would be tonics that let you look like you are on a mount while out of combat.
There is a long list of content I would prefer to see before they made anything like that, which is why I am opposed to mounts at this time.
Mounts should give +15% speed. Basic versions of mounts you can buy/win in the game. The ascended versions and a broad spectrum of different races will be offered in gem store.
To compensate the gold saved by not using WPs it has to be invested in consumables to keep the mount working: hay and water.
Acessories for the mount will be sold for gems: saddles, saddle pads etc. To boost the travel speed to +33% you can buy magic hay in the store.

Considering most classes can earn +33% without the need of a “mount” and some can have a permanent +25 without the need of again a “mount”….No. Someone post that beating a dead horse pic this guy hasn’t seen it enough.

Can you imagine how much havoc that would inflict on wvw? Especially when you start throwing in the have/have nots factor with that ‘pay to win’ hay.
No! Absolutely not.

Mounts?
What is it, another mount thread? And started by a character whose account name states he is a troll? Seems something we should be seriously consi… oh wait.
But in case the name and thread combo is purely accidental (…).
No to mounts that offer any advantage. Even if it’s just something minor, like a permanent boos to movement speed, it’s still something others need to pay for with trait/skill selection. If it’s something more, it enters fast into the realm of “must have”, which would force even the people that dislike mounts (and there’s lot of them in GW2) to use them. That’s definitely not cool.
As for purely visual mounts? It’s still a lot of work. Not only in creating new animations, but in changes to the engine (any mounts bigger than currently existing broom/drill would require resizing collision boxes for player characters). It’s a work i’d rather see put to better use (because introducing mounts i don’t like would mean that something i do want would be delayed/cancelled).
In short – no, thank you.

Imagine evryone at Teq or Wurm pulling out a mount while they wait. The server would likely be unable to cope with the load. I suspect that is another reason along with the superiority of wps (from a pure gameplay convenience pov) why we wont see mounts.
Yeah on top of that they updated the WP system so they’re all uncontested now until u get to the map. So the megaserver argument is not valid.

Someone reads patch notes~
And the old system used to be this way anyway. It was much less of an issue because the server could show which waypoints were uncontested, but if it flipped, you’d still get relocated. (Usually. If it wasn’t bugged.)

A thing that A-Net can do for mounts, is having them participate in combat. All players receive a mount from a small pool of their choice for free, and can unlock more by exploring the world (like the ranger).
Then, you can ride your mount and receive different skills, and it can be cool since it’s used in Black Desert and some other game I forgot about. This can be awesome for Mounts PVP Capture the Flag and racing. I’d say, various mounts should have around a 20-25% speed boost, no more no less.
