Mounts [merged]
I always wonder why ppl find it amusing to lie to new players about mounts,
the truth is there are currently 3 mounts in game, none of which give speed boosts, mainly there just for fun and to look interesting,

Wow thanks a lot Kai
All 3 cost gems, so i’m quite sure im not going to waste them (if I convert them/buy them) on such unnecessary things
Gliders are coming in HoT!
I know im a little late to this thread but i felt like jumping in as many "points of arguments havent been met FOR having mounts.
1.Lets face it, guild wars 2 is a very cosmetic game wether you want to admit it or not. its obviously pushed onto players very heavily (ok looking ascended gear with the best stats but more interesting looking dungeon exotics, legendaries which stats arent particularly legendary but extremely awesome skins, transmutation packages" the gem store is always selling some type of skin for something, having skins just for crafting equipment..that in its own right should defend that gw2 is cosmetic, if you disagree you obviously have not even played the game.
2.Yes there is a fast travel system but waypoints are not free. If you have to travel across the map youre easily looking at spending a few pieces of silver which i will always think is a bogus penalty especially for new players even people who have just hit 80 that arent rich and cant afford 5 silver to get to an area that has their recommended level zone. Yes the game downscales your level in lower levels but still the experience and karma vendors are not retro leveled to reward you for your actual level.
3.Achivements, Replayability of old content, and player grouping which is all tied into eachother. Perfect example is the way world of warcraft has implemented their mount system. For certain mounts that were extremly epic looking you have to complete an achievement which unlocks said epic mount as a reward I couldnt tell you how many times i grouped with people to rerun ulduar and icecrown citadel to get all the protodrake and vanquisher mounts which i still to this day think are the coolest looking mounts in that game. Dont even get me started in zul’aman for the tiger mount. Again youre talking about playing with other people to achv the same goal, that by itself is an experience and makes people want to work together and keep the game just because there are players out there who want every achievement possible.
4. Profit. Arenanet’s gem store would explode on itself with profits on mounts. Again another really good example is world of warcrafts gamestore, they profit selling certain mounts that cant be collected in game otherwise. People that play guild wars 2 especially older players sink alot of money on skins and gems as it is, imagine how much more money they would profit if they sold certain mounts. This is a f2p game youre talking about that profits off microtransactions, think about it…
5. A new farming addiction. This kindve goes back into number 3, people would farm really hard to get all the amounts, its already done for legendaries and dungeon armor i see no difference.
6. Mounts look cool anyway you cut it. Sitting atop a dragon or a giant scorpion or on the shoulders of a cyclops ogre just makes you want to run around the world for no reason. Again thats refreshing gameplay value. If you disagree with this you literally have no reason to be playing video games in general because you lack imagination.
7. Self-accomplishment and pride. Imagine how it feels knowning you busted your kitten to unlock a mount that took forever to get, that makes most people give up on the journey for that mount.
I could literally go on and on about how mounts should be implemented in an mmo game in general i see no reason why it shouldnt be implemented.
Frankly I’ve heard very few good reasons to not have mounts.
Best argument I’ve heard is it invalidating swiftness mechanics, which I can appreciate. There are ways around that, but yeah, it’d be tricky to build around. Not that Anet couldn’t do it, and make it work.
The “WP, therefore, no mounts” argument has some flaws. Lots of GW2 is just running around. Mindlessly popping swiftness to get from point a to point b doesn’t seem particularly helpful or skillful.
There’s another argument for WPs being much worse than Mounts, but not getting into that.
Having been running Silverwastes, I actually wished that had at least area-locked mounts, so you could cavalry charge to bases in need of help. Especially since that area has few WPs.
Other than that, it usually devolves into “I don’t like it, therefore we shouldn’t have it” arguments.
And I dunno. I’m not that big into mounts, but I see little reason they shouldn’t be in the game. Just have it rely on existing swiftness, and greatly disincentive using them in battle or certain areas.
Mount will never happen because game structure is too fast. Example; like mobility. Start class fastest-slowest mobility; 1 warrior, 2nd thief, 3rd ele, 4 engineer, 5 guardian, 6 ranger, 7 mes. Mounts are for slow-medium structure mmo game; not for guild wars 2. Guild Wars 2 structure is slave to fast-too fast everything.
Example; Zerk-kill everything fast, Spam-use same skill fast, Mobility-run very fast. Another example; thief have 2 teleport- Shadow Escape http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Shadow_Escape and Mesmer have portal entre- can teleport 20 player http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Portal_Entre
Look at other mmo game; no one of them have this too fast everything; except guild wars 2, so it make sense for them to have mounts. Why have mounts if have super fast mobility like thief, war, ele and war? T
Other mmo game war, ele and thief mobility is normal speed-fast speed with food+skill with long-very long cooldown
Last; Super Fast Rune
Example;
Rune of the pack- 15% chance when struck to grant nearby allies Might, Fury, and Swiftness for 10 seconds. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rune_of_the_Pack
Rune of speed- 15% chance when struck to gain swiftness for 15 seconds. (Cooldown: 30s) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rune_of_Speed
Super Fast Sigil;
Sigil of Speed- Gain Swiftness (20 Seconds) on Killing a Foe http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sigil_of_Superior_Speed
Even rune and sigil make guild wars 2 structure too fast.
Final; Again, Guild Wars 2 structure is all about fast everything and speed everything.
Mounts will never work.
Only way for mounts to work is for arena net to remake guild wars 2 structure like guild wars 1 structure; No fast everything, No speed everything, No instant everything; see word> “normal, high amount of preparation, time commitment, coordinate, more than normal”
Elite Mission> " Especially difficult missions, with an 8–12 player party size, that require a high amount of preparation, skill, knowledge and time commitment. Having the correct team build is a must, and players must coordinate with other team members more than normal." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars
If game was Guild Wars 1; mount would work good for it structure

Mount will never happen…
Too late we already got 3 and it looks like we are getting another one with HoT.
They are crappy versions of them compared to other games but they are still technically mounts.
Mounts are needed. Its almost ridiculous the hoops people have to jump through just to have swidtness up when in wvw. If you miss a swiftness u can fall behind. How silly is it that every few seconds youre putting swiftness on yourself n others just to get around? Just add mounts that gives the person swiftness and get rid of the current tedious swiftness reapplication
I would also appreciate mounts. Just give them regular +33% runspeed. Those who like mounts can use them, those who dont just dont. So there is no advantage in using mounts, except QoL improvement (expecially for Mesmer/Guards).
And on top for all those “Mounts hurt my eyes”-whiner -> make mounts togglable as the player instruments. With regular +33% it just looks like permaspeed.
Summing up:
- Mount-fans get mounts and QoL
- Mount-haters dont see them
- ANet can milk another cash cow
win:win I guess.

Great idea covers both sides of the discussion.
I see people still ignore the truth:
- Mounts are already in the game.
The appear in two forms:
- Visuals. Just change your walk appearance. Doesn’t work on combat. These are the travel items. Right now there’s only simple stuff like the broom and the carpet. But any future travel item will still be like that: No advantages, no extra mechanics. Just visuals.
- Mechanics. They work within a context for a purpose. Can’t be used outside that context. Examples of this are siege golems and the gliders. You can’t bring a siege golem anywhere. They have a purpose and can’t use them anywhere but where they are supposed to be used. You won’t be able to glide just anywhere, only in areas designed with gliders in mind.
People who want mounts they can bring anywhere and use in combat are wasting their time.
There’s already mounts, and they already the way they are supposed to be. There’s simply no room for other way.
(edited by MithranArkanere.8957)
Yeah, they are already in the game, just terrible slow. Add permanent Swiftness and thats it.
Permanent Swiftness is already achieveable for some classes and some even outrun it with leaps/charges.
So permanent swiftness would not break the game imo, its just a more comfortable way of traveling.
- Guard/Mesmer (maybe Revenant as well) would ooc not be terrible slow anymore
- more build diversity, since no runspeed runes, traits, signets needed if you only take these for QoL issues
- more individualization, with enough skins
- better Quality of Life, no more repetitive button mashing for swiftness
- moar money for ANet
And with togglable displaying of mounts everybody who hates them can turn them off.
I would also appreciate mounts. Just give them regular +33% runspeed. Those who like mounts can use them, those who dont just dont. So there is no advantage in using mounts, except QoL improvement (expecially for Mesmer/Guards).
Read what you wrote once again, and think a bit why it doesn’t match up.
Hint (because i doubt you’ll get it): the +33% runspeed that doesn’t require any skills/traits/runes is an advantage.

Ignoring the optical aspect its just a timesaver.
Everybody can specc their class for max mobility. Some may use runes for that, others just switch in the signet or some weapons.
With the mount you would just save the time for switching/respeccing the traits, runes, “mobility-armor” with runes or whatever.
Basically its nothing else than the unlimitied tools form the store, which only save you the time needed to get into WvW to buy some new tools – except the one with sprockets.
Mounts should have 60-100% speed buff and only usable out of combat. It’s a convenience and in line with about 10 billion other games. A mount with 33% speed buff is a joke, you can use swiftness for that.
‘would of been’ —> wrong

Yes. the advantage of person with mount over a person without is that the first one has both the runspeed, and they can use rune/skill/traitslots for other things. Having effectively more rune/skill/traitslots than other players is not just a QoL feature.

Nope. You are free to change your traits, abilities and – hold on – even armor/weapons wherever you want, except combat.
All you have to do is carry it around and invest time to change between spec #1 and #2.
With a +33% mount you would basically just save some inventory slots (depending on class) and time.
If Anet would finally implement multispeccing (with armorsets) even the time aspect would drop out. It would only be annoying to get into combat with a mobility spec.

Not so. If i get into combat while running, i won’t be able to respec, while a person on mount will be dismounted and able to fight with their combat set. This is especially important consideration in WvW, where you can easily get ambushed when roaming, and having access to both mobility and combat readiness at the same time offers huge advantage.

I believe that ANet can approach the subject of mounts a little differently than other MMOs with something like Mounted Combat.
Here’s what i’ve thought:
1. Mounts should be treated as equipment (with rarities, equipment slots, lvl requirements etc.), giving increasable movement speed (and possibly armor) per rarity
2. By equipping a mount the utility toolbar (the right one) should change to mount abilities (something like stomp, charge etc.)
3. 2 new weapon types should be implemented:
Lance: cavalry weapon, slightly more powerful than normal weapons, but only used when mounted
Halberd (or pike): two handed, used on foot only, slightly less powerful than normal weapons, but with a meaty bonus vs cavalry
I think this could be a win-win situation for everyone since:
a. ANet would make a TON of money from mount sales while keeping the community happy
b. A lot more strategy in WvW since commanders will have to coordinate different types of troops on the field more effectively
c. The cycle “normal characters beat halberds, halberds beat cavalry and cavalry beats normal characters” should keep the game balanced
d. Awesomeness level of the game +9000. Imagine a WvW game where ten, twenty or even fifty players charge with their mounts against a forest of spears….. this is just movie epic.
(for the sake of balancing i guess mounts in sPvP should either not be used or work like mounts in regular MMOs)
The visual mounts already have bonus speed.
It just happens to be the same bonus speed anyone gets when they are out of combat.
You could actually put travel items in the Hero panel’s wardrobe instad being gizmos you have to carry and use.
While out of combat, your character would equip them automatically, and a button would be added to manually enable or disable the currently selected.
- Running shoes (Default). Gives different animations while running without taking the weapons out while out of combat. Makes charr run on all fours. Makes tengu run all ‘ninja-like’. Can be disabled so running out of combat uses the same animation as during combat.
- Skates. 4 wheels are added on the foot of the character without replacing the boots. The wheels appear on different locations per race:
- Humans. Inline skates
- Norn. Quad skates.
- Asura. Hover skates. Actually it’s just two of those floaty octahedrons seen on golems all the time on each feet instead of wheels.
- Charr. Chariot skates. (one of the wheels is big like those of a small bike)
- Silvari. Orbit wheels. They are weird like that.
- Skateboard. Makes the character ride a skateboard.
- Bicycle. Makes the character ride a bike.
- Flame Djinn’s Haste. Makes the character look like ‘skating’ on flames, reusing the skateboard’s animations.
- Storm Djinn’s Haste. Makes the character look like ‘skating’ on lighting. Reusing the skate’s animations.
- Enchanted Broom. Makes the character ride a floating broom. Can also be used for glider customization.
- Magic Carpet. Makes the character ride a Vabbian floating carpet. Can also be used for glider customization.
- Drill. Makes the character look like digging underground.
For all the haters keep using the wp and you swiftness skills for all of us wanting mounts the speed increase is the same speed as swiftness. I see nothing wrong here.

Beyond the fact that all the mounts clutter up the zone and cost computing resources (and development resources) better used on actual things that the game needs? I don’t hate the idea of mounts, but I see no REASON for them to exist in this game. Just because some players want them is not a valid REASON.

True, but since neither the Carpet nor the Tunneling Tool or the kites (the current “mounts”) are useable in WvW. So I guess Mounts wouldnt be useable as well. Still no problem here.

As already mentioned +33% looks like perma swiftness so the mounts could be turned off (see player instruments) for all those mount-hater and be auto-turned off like Minis for performance issues.
Btw Minis make even less sense than mounts (no QoL, just customisation) and they exist.
And, as already mentioned as well, mounts give QoL and customisation. Just like all the convenience items out of the gem store e.g. pick axes.
I see absolutely NO reason why there shouldnt be mounts, even if they are just Carpets, Hoverboards or Tunneling Tools (with +33% swiftness) instead of shiny rainbow ponies or stuff like that.

Another mount discussion?
So please give me the coconuts and the sound effects and emoticons to go with it ;P
I would pay a lot of money to have a mini of a servant banging coconut halves together flowing me around. That is the mount that GW2 needs.
i’m against mounts in gw2.
it’s a cool feature, but i do not see it as a good addition to current traveling system that gw2 has.
I loved collecting mounts in my other games. I would be for this in a heartbeat! Maybe keep them out of PvP/WvW, but for the open world, they would be great fun.
I suppose it’s only natural that upon seeing this pic today, the first thing I thought of was GW2. Ahem.
That little guy is obviously trying to weasel his way out of paying waypoint fees and you just know he’s not paying attention to all the pretty terrain.
I’ve been playing this since it was in beta and before that was gw1 for years. Love the game. I do wish they would add mounts. If only for cosmetic which is what gw2 is. People say mounts are bad but I couldn’t disagree more. If I had a mount I would ride it from A to B and join in on any action along the way. Instead we have portals? Hmmm mounts cut down on player interaction? really as opposed to hitting a button and traveling across 6 maps instantly? Please take note Anet. This is form a very long long term supporter. Thanks all
P’s I titled this back with a wish list because I stopped playing for 12 months due to bordom and a dislike of mini game content. Trying again

If I had a mount I would ride it from A to B and join in on any action along the way.
I don’t believe this to be true for the majority of players. Sure at first you might because you are excited about having as mount. But if you were on, let’s say, one side of Cursed Shore, and you needed to get to Arah, I strongly feel as though 99.9999% of the population would WP there instead of mounting up and running.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
If Anet was to add mounts, as an item that could provide some form of movement buff, I would like to see them add something more than just a speed buff. And I think that is exactly what the glider is going to be. It will be a mount that grants access to unreachable places. It has a function beyond simply moving.
If they added ground mounts, I would want them to provide some form of function, such as jumping gaps or traversing steep inclines. If it was part of a zone mechanic, to allow for progession through a zone, than I would be fine with that, but do not see the need for a simple speed buff mount.
Personally I am happy with the pure cosmetic mounts (broom, carpet, tunnel device) but would like to see more added. Maybe more traditional mounts, such as moa’s and drakes. So long as they are purely cosmetic.

Agreed. Mounts that offer nothing but a speed buff is kinda boring, seeing as how most classes (except Guardians if memory recalls) already have speed buffs. Or at least they’d have no value other than as something to provide visual flair (and in that case I’d rather ANet add more armors).
If they added ground mounts, I would want them to provide some form of function, such as jumping gaps
Giants frogs!
or traversing steep inclines.
Llamas!
I only want them as cosmetic, sure it would be nice to travel slightly faster but I’m more interested in the ideas Anet spoke about. I’d like to see mounts you need to learn skills and level up before you can tame them etc. I would like to see lots of monsters in game tameable etc. like I said. my wish list.
Oh! Yay! Another mount thread… >.>
I’d like to see mounts you need to learn skills and level up before you can tame them etc.
I think there is already a game where you can capture critters and level them up for them to learn skills. I think you keep the monsters in balls that fit in your pocket.
PvP Rank – 151 – Dragon
WvW Rank – 1,120 – Silver Colonel
I don’t like mounts as other game implement them. I like the broom, the carpet and the drill, though. IMO, if you want mounts for visuals, they are there, just slowly appearing.
If you want mounts for easy permaswiftness, then, no. To manage your speed is a part of the game, not a convenience. Knowing how to not fall behing the zerg is part of WvW, investing in swiftness trait points you could have used for dps is part of the game. Exploring and travel are part of the game.
I think mounts should only be allowed to players that are willing to accept the gameplay cost: they can have speed mounts only if they already use a build that grants them permaswiftness. You don’t like it? Then you dont want a mount. You want unbalanced advantage.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”
Hawks
It sux when people are opposed to having mounts added. If people don’t want to use them don’t? I don’t care as to speed buffs or anything like that. I just want them for cosmetics. They are simple an awesome thing in a mmorpg. If I was to choose how mounts we’re implemented it would be as 2 options as follows ( both options are strictly PVE only)
1st option. Mounts and cosmetic and only attained by learning the needed traits/skills and levelling said traits/skills to acquire bigger better mounts which of course would be obtained by taming much like a ranger tamed its pets in guild wars 1. I would make it so mounts can only travel via town portal gates and NOT by waypoints so if you leave your mount in Kryta its in Kryta until you pick it up from the stable closets to where you had it last and ride it via a town portal or across maps to get to your desired destination. That being said not being able to summon a mount randomly.
2nd option. The other option would be to make mounts used in the same way as option 1 with no summon and tameable etc but having a unique set of skills for each type of mount so you could battle on your mount also. Having say a charge skill for a mammoth, Sprint for a leopard, knock back style wing flapping thing for a big mounted bird, a leap attack for a giant lizard, Roar attack for a bear….. etc. And this is where it would get tricky, I would make it so if a mount dies in battle its dead full stop. They can only be healed while in a stable, so you wouldn’t want to ride your mount into a cluster of monsters in orr higher level then you because you could kiss it good buy.
These are just some surface ideas I would love to see and it would sure as heck mean I’d spend more time in each zone and not just waypointing a million miles from one city to the next. Thanks for any readers and would love to hear from a Admin on this view.
I take this opportunity to channel all the player aggression on forums to something far more constructive and important for the game. Mounts!! Why can’t we have Mounts ?!!
Even in the form of toys….it would still be fun to have more mounts! We could have collections of mounts like we have of minis!
Give us some mounts in the expansion!! There is so much scope here with a variety of different race based mounts…..

Please anet sell us mounts… I want a mount I love them and they add such variety to the games there in. Plus you can sell them to us. Oh the broom and carpet don’t count. And yes a speed increase is also added, something like 35% the same as swiftness. I know some people don’t want them and I will hear them soon enough, but why not and don’t go saying “we have waypoints… No” I say so what. What if I want to run there on a mount let me. The only issue i see being a problem is maybe wvw .. Some one come up with a good idea for wvw and mounts at this moment I don’t know of any.
This is priceless.
