I hate to admit it, but if this is a permanent change, then I am permanently gone. I love Tyria and her people, and I love their stories. But I refuse to play GW2 with a gutted story. I hope more than anything that this is a bug, and that the reports of the story order being changed are false, but no dev has stepped forward to comment one way or another.

And really, that’s all we want: an answer. Has the PS been changed? In what ways and for what reasons?

Taking a shotgun to the head might have been kinder then sneaking in changes for things that didn’t need to be “fixed.”

The old saying “don’t fix what isn’t broke” applies here.

The Personal Story wasn’t the greatest piece of literature or the awesomest, but it was a hell of a lot better then the Living Story. (It was and still is strides ahead of the Living Story.) Despite the little foibles it had, I really did like Personal Story because it was a story where I made choices and got to pick things that mattered to me.

I was only lucky to be able to play through it 3 times, but I had planned to do more and was waiting on the husband to join me so that we could experience some stuff together… boy, I wish I had known. I would have rushed ahead to do Personal Story on more characters.

Now suddenly, one of the most important developments is culled…. and for what? So that in the future they can make it replayable for people who wanted to replay it. Just kittens… lots of furry little kittens. Give with one hand and take twice as much away with the other.

I simply do NOT understand how removing a working, functional chapter that allowed character growth that focused on the player’s relationships with characters other than Trahearne makes sense. The whole chapter showed character growth for OUR characters. It lets us deal with an event we could not prevent and then try to overcome it. We need MORE of these chapters. Chapters that focus ON our development with characters who aren’t the pets (like Kasmeer ) and which showed the growth of the character in terms of dealing with events where the player has to deal with death, betrayal and more death.

I’m just… ugh right now. I am hoping this is fixed and put back in. I don’t expect sorry, I just expect corrections.

Absolutely agree with you as well, Shardelyss. The saddest thing is, as I’ve already said in another post, with every minute this is not addressed by the dev team in some manner, any manner, the damage increases. Roleplayer-type players will just keep getting angrier and more confused, being left to guesswork on what the everloving hell this is supposed to be. Meanwhile, non-roleplayers are blowing their lids because of level gating and related issues. This is rapidly turning into the greatest fiasco I have yet experienced in gaming, in relation to what the update was supposed to achieve, that is, streamlining gameplay and increasing player retention. It is currently doing the exact opposite.

I don’t understand, have those missions been removed, or not?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2g57cq/greatest_fear_arc_isnt_gone_guys/

Could someone from the dev team please pop by and clarify?

If they have not been removed, how come some players report their absence? Is it a bug?
And if they indeed have been removed from the game, may we know why and if there is a chance to have them back? The “greatest fear” storyline was good, and it’s a real shame if it’s not part of the Personal Story anymore

There were posts by Jeffrey Vaughn stating that if you are on the Fear storyline then you will complete it. Being on Forging the Pact, you’d have chosen your fear and be on that storyline already (chapter 7 begins with Forging the Pact).

So the OP got “grandfathered in”. After Sad Duty (the final of original Chapter 7 steps for Tonn’s storyline), you will go to Against the Corruption.

Any new character who is not at Forging the Pact, however, will go straight from Forging the Pact → The Battle of Fort Trinity → Against the Corruption.

Similarly, any character in chapter 8 (Temple of the Forgotten God or on) will experience that final chapter in the original order – again, having been “grandfathered in”.

Link to aforementioned dev post:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Personal-Story-parts-missing/first#post4398038

So basically, any character who has not completed Retribution/reached Forging the Pact will never see a fear storyline. Any character who has not reached Temple of the Forgotten God will see chapter 8 in the new order.

This isn’t really a case of retcon. Well, it is, but it’s more than that.

The order of the story steps now make more sense. From what I understand, the dialogue remains unchanged – though I’ll be going through on my warrior (who’s currently in the racial sympathy storyline) to double check this. If this is true, then that means that you’ll get dialogue and actions that make no sense. Heck, even if it isn’t true, this still happens. In so many ways.

Very, very disappointed in this change, especially coming as it did without forewarning. The first season of the living story was stated clearly and often to be temporary. The removal of the Raid on the Capricorn map was announced ahead of time as well. In this case, there’s a blog post about re-ordering the personal story at high levels, but nothing about the outright removal of whole chapters.

I had a character sitting at the start of the Concordia mission before the patch, having recently finished up the Claw Island segment, with the intent of playing the “fear of letting an innocent die” storyline for the first time. I (foolishly, as it turned out) waited for the feature pack’s release, to see what the new, compelling rewards for personal story missions were like.

Now I find myself at the Battle of Fort Trinity after defeating Dzhudin Stormbreak, with its undead mesmer and water orb and no context for either of them. Had I known this was coming, I could have finished the Forging of the Pact before the patch and at least been able to play through one branch of Tonn’s story. But now I can’t, and I’m seeing no signs that I’ll ever have the opportunity to again. This situation is just frustrating and confusing.

It’s not merely frustrating and confusing, it is atrocious and unacceptable, and Anet are aggravating it by the minute with continually not responding to player inquiries about this. To be blunt, I can’t give two flying kittens about level gating when the stories of my characters, that I have already guided through the proper storyline, and grown attached to, are being kicked out the window by some kittened, obviously bugged changes in the name of “efficiency” or “flow” or whatever. If it turns out this was fully intentional, and we truly won’t be seeing those missions in the future, that will be the moment Anet loses all of my respect in one instant. I actually paid for that core storyline as well when I bought the game, and in my opinion the new dev team has simply no right to kitten on that and butcher established lore that has been part of the game since release.

I agree totally, i care litle for the leveling, the bomb was the story… still hoping is a bug or something, but my faith is low…

Hello Chris. I am not sure if you are the right person I could ask for this job as the customer service thread doesn’t seem to tell me much, but this has something to do with the Personal Story.

First off, here’s the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2g02mx/the_personal_story_doesnt_make_sense_since_the/

Now I can understand rearranging certain chapters. I think I can live with it given time. But what caught my attention however is related to the quest A Light in the Darkness where you disabled the Your Greatest Fear portion of the quest, which in turn would disable the other quests related to that part (for example, the removal of Tonn and Apatia’s quests). I don’t know if this is really the case or not as I have finished Apatia’s quest after this patch was downloaded. I want to know if this is really true or not. And if so, I’d appreciate your insight as to why this happened.

Hey Malkavian,

Mind if i get back to you on this?

Chris

If this is true it is likely a bug. I have heard of a player playing this instance after patch so it is still in the game files.

I wonder how much of a retcon it is. Practicly once everyone who started that line finishes it, its no longer accessable, making it no more part of the game than anything that people can datamine. So will those events be valid anymore? Some people have them, some people dont. Which is not that new, we have been locking ourselves out of stories when we choose a path one way or another, and we still consider those events happening too. Like how we still had the Blue Orb even if we didnt go with Apatia.

But there is a difference in the big picture of this when that story is likely erased from the past. Every playthrough of the game’s original PS is set in the past. We witness that past through many paths and choices of paths… But while things still seem to happen as they were originally written (blue orb in Fort Trinity), there is no longer any in-game explanation for them. We know the explanation, who actually played through those episodes, but right at that point when nobody is ever going to play through it again, its out-of-game information. Not ingame information.

And we all know their stance about out-of-game information.

As for the change of the order of the missions, im yet to see how seriously messed up it feels. I can see however that it might feel inconsistent with the actual progress of the Pacts movement through Orr. However with how the PS episodes are working right now, by the time people get there it might be normal for them to explore the whole area that they can through map completion and leveling first, and only then start the next chapter of the story. This wont fix dialogues that dont make sense anymore though, and those will never be fixed. They are fully voiced and expensive to change accordingly. If they attempt to fix it, that will only be more erasing, hence we go back to the Greatest Fear plotline issue of history altering and ingame/out-of-game information.

Well, someone’s got to mention it. I felt disturbed by this because on the one hand I still managed to play Apatia’s story just fine after the patch came out and all of a sudden, this issue popped out of Reddit to which I could not confirm without having to level for hours. The Patch notes never mentioned anything about removing pieces of the living story, but rather making some rearrangements.

I just want to add my voice to those asking for this change to be reverted.

I really don’t understand why it was changed, as other people have already explained it removes one of the best chapters and makes a mess of the remaining story.

I have 2 characters who were just past the Claw Island part and I was really looking forward to playing through this part of the story and the Greatest Fear storyline in particular. Now I’m not sure I ever will.

Even for my characters who have completed it the story makes no sense. You might be grandfathered in to the old storyline if you’re in the middle of it but if it’s completed you get converted to the new version. Now apparently my characters got not only into the Artesian Well but all the way down to the Temple of Grenth before establishing a forward base in Orr or a way to get troops in and out.

I didn’t like anything past the battle of claw island because I felt it was too dark and characters were killed before I could really attach to them (or if I did attach to them, I knew a grisly end was coming for them). Still I think this jumbling of the story shows a confusing lack of concern on the part of the developers. A lot of changes in this feature pack feel incomplete, only half-executed. Things are cut out without changing the content around them to compensate, or including something new to fill the gap.
I didn’t like the story but lack of continuity and content is going to lose and disappoint way more people than just those who didn’t enjoy the writing.

Well, so much for that lore!

Actually, if you pick a different Fear story than Apatia’s, the Krait Orb still shows up at Fort Trinity, with some unnamed Pact members talking about it.

What I’m saying is that kind of happened already if you did the one with Tonn or Syska.

While this is indeed true, its no different than other parts of the story where other characters are involved for important parts. Take professor Gor for example.

Most only know what his theories (or who the hell he even is) if they play the Asura storyline. Whilst I’m sure many got curious what those theories are, the story seems to consider everything being played almost parallel.

Just because you played Charr, doesn’t mean Gorr’s discoveries never happened. You just weren’t present for it. They can be explained if you take the oppertunity to find out how or why though.

The same thing is the case with the Krait Orb. Dealing with Syska or Tonn didn’t stop such events with Apatia from occurring, but were done simultaneously.

The issue is however, it was completely cut.
It would be the same as cutting out the entire Asuran section of Professor Gorr’s discoveries (which truth be told, was a HUGE impact to the Pact’s advancement) and them just having this uber megalaser that somehow the dragons were weak against with no explanation as to how or why.

They can do it of course, but it doesn’t bode well storywise if its never explained somewhere. In some fashion. Even if it means replaying the game.

Duty is heavier than death.

This choice always felt false to me. I know it was meant to show how we affect our personal story, but it was bluntly the Pale Tree saying “What horrible thing do you want to happen to you now?” All the answers were too specific for me to be making a real choice, and you could see the tragedy coming a mile away. I understand why you guys are sad about losing the story, especially if you connected with those characters, but I understand why it’s gone, too.

I actually had no idea your answer chose your quest/the outcome. Might be why I hated Apatia’s death arc because it was specifically the thing I wanted least.

I thought you guys might want to take a look at the screenshot I posted here. In case it doesn’t work. Check my recent post on http://malkavianrpg.tumblr.com/ as I uploaded the screenshot (because it seems this site is having trouble uploading images today) indicating that you still have that choice between your greatest fears.

If that is true and not some excellently done photoshop then my faith in arenanet is partially restored.

Parts 7 & 8 of the personal story still a mess though.

Haha, I am dreadful with photoshop, dude. I hope I cleared this up once and for all that the Greatest Fear plotline was never removed to begin with.

That makes me hopeful again… but I’d love a more concrete evidence showing that it does still exist and that talking to the Pale Tree isn’t just a dead end dialogue.

Who volunteers to powerlevel a char up to that point and tell us tomorrow morning? That person would get a +1 from me.

That would take days for me to reach level 60 with all the other stuff I’ve been doing. Though I do have a brand new Charr I’ve been wanting to play around with so I could take you up on that challenge, but no promises.

Actually looking back at them, it seems that despite the presence of these choices the quests are not present at all. I will have to double check that myself.

That’s what I’m afraid of, that the questions are now non-sequiturs that no longer affect the story.

I don’t think it’s a bug. It was mentioned in the patch notes, so it was definitely intended. Jeffery Vaungh’s comments cement the notion that it was intented.

I can interpret Chris in two ways:

  1. He doesn’t know and is going to find out to relay that information to us.
  2. ArenaNet has seen the outburst and are considering reverting the change.

I interpret it as #1

My comment that is a bug is me using logic. Please link me Jeffery Vaungh’s comments.

I linked two of them earlier in this thread, and one is in this very thread:

There’s a few more, they’re all very vague, but just scroll through here.

THEY DID NOT CHANGE ANY OF THE DIALOGUE IN THE STORY STEPS, this includes that of choosing your fear.

This is what I’ve found out.

You chose what your greatest fear is, but the storyline is still cut. Go on, play past Forging the Pact. If you get Apatia or the others (whichever you picked), without your character having hit Forging the Pact prior to the update, then I’ll be convinced.

In other words, from what I gather and have seen, you say what your fear is, but there is no plot that enacts on it.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I’d like to see if new characters/players can get that dialogue.

I continued my personal story from the orders storyline on my lvl 80 ranger, and yes, you get that dialogue option when you talk to the Pale Tree in “Light in the Darkness”; however, you won’t see the corresponding storylines. After the “Forging the Pact” mission you have to go and defend Fort Trinity. After that, you continue with"Against the Corruption". The story of Apatia/Tonn/Syska is completely missing.

To quote myself from another thread:

I deliberately waited with my ranger’s personal story to experience the new rewards after the patch and I’ve never thought that not just the reward system of the story would change. I reached the Temple of the Forgotten God strory mission now but at this point I the story has lost all of its cohesion. Here are my observations:

1. In “Light in the Darkness” story step I choose Apatia’s story just to realize that the Apatia/Tonn/mesmer saboteur storylines are completely missing and at this point in the story I think they cut them out completely.
2. After Forging the Pact you have to defend Fort Trinity now. There is a slight change in the conversation with Trehearne, he doesn’t mention Apatia/Tonn/or the saboteur just talks about how we drew the dragon’s attention to us. Unfortunately the new dialogue part wasn’t dubbed ( I couldn’t hear neither my character nor Trehaerne speaking).
3. Right after this I was teleported to Cursed Shore to follow with the “Against the Corruption”, “Cathedral of Silence / Romke’s Final Voyage”, and “The Source of Orr” missions. After a mission you’re automatically teleported back to Fort Trinity and you can start the next mission from there (in the air ship, you don’t even have to move an inch)
4. In “The Source of Orr” story mission you see all the NPCs who were there in the pre-patch version. This doesn’t make any sense since you haven’t met many of them due to the new order of the storyline. For example, Sayeh is there and when I talked to her this is what my character said: “Twice you’ve given me aid. Once with Apatia, then at Abaddon’s Temple. I am in your debt.” Too bad that my ranger has never met with Apatia and never been to the temple of Abaddon at this point….. If you speak with Galina, you mention to her how crucial was her and Snarl’s presence in the fight against the Mouth of Zhaitan….
5. Now after the Source of Orr comes the “Temple of the Forgotten God” story step. After Trehaerne delivered his speech, he started to talk about Tonn’s death, his widow and that I shouldn’t feel burdened by his death… (it’s a good thing that I chose Apatia’s story that I couldn’t experience, not to mention that I talked about her with Sayeh in The Source of Orr story step; also with a new character you don’t even know who the hell is Tonn at this point) and he introduced me to Sayeh who doesn’t seem to know me.

I have to tell you that I really dislike the changes to the personal story so far. I can just imagine how confused will the new players be when they play through the story.

I finished my personal story yesterday so I can confirm now that “The greatest fear” plotline is completely cut out.

That is correct they are all vague. He did not say yes it is intentional not did he say it is a bug.

I am personally suspecting it is a bug as the game files for the quest are still in the game. If it was a intentional removal players would not be able to play the story.

Okham’s Razor

Hi Chris, I was fortunate enough to check the instance in question that I mentioned to you about and it seems that the Greatest Fear portion of the story A Light in the Darkness is kept intact. No removals, no nothing. It was only modified on the Story Journal itself, which I still think sucks but nonetheless, I can confirm that the PS was not cut in anyway, shape or form.

Awesome Malkavian I really appreciate the info. Leah is looking into it and we will update when we have more info.

chris

Alright, I think I may have jumped the gun with what I said earlier. It seems that the issue lies in Chapter 7. Those who are in the middle of the quests related to their greatest fears in this case, Tonn and Apatia’s and your other quest were apparently skipped as a side effect of the consolidation of quests into chapters. Either way, please keep us posted.

Will do.

Probably an update Monday if you don’t mind. Super busy today.

Okham’s Razor

Them still being in the game files is outright (indirectly) explained:

They did not alter the story placement for those characters that were already in chapter 7 or chapter 8. To quote:

If you were on the storyline pre-patch, you’ll still be on it post-patch. (Thought it might not be visible until you reach L70, since it’s in Chapter 7.)

From this very thread.

In short: you will experience no loss of the greatest fear storyline if you have reached Forging the Pact. You will experience no reordering of Orr’s plot if you have reached Temple of the Forgotten God. If you had not reach them then you will experience the change. Ergo, the files must remain in the game. This was likely done to prevent confusion (lol) over those who are in the middle of said plots – or to prevent players from missing/repeating story steps if they’re in the middle of chapter 8.

Why are you so intent on proving to me that it is not a bug and is intentional? Again the statement from Jeff stated nothing in regards to removing anything story related from the game.
