I played GW1 before the Sorrows Furnace update and my main was a mesmer from year 1-7 so that should tell you something about my GW1 experience and i do think you should give GW 2 another shot .

One thing you cant do is look at GW 2 in the same way you did GW 1 cause its a completely different beast .

My first advice is to find your play style . I HATED melee in GW1 but its not so bad in GW2 and on the flip side i loved my ele in GW1 and im so not a fan in GW2 . Dont just play a class for a few levels then dump it either some dont take off till about half way .

Point two there are no tanks or monks for that matter so learn to dodge . Just because you have that fancy metal armor doesn’t make you immune to needing to dodge a big AoE so learn tells or you will be D-E-A-D DEAD .

Point 3 Find a guild or guilds and a server that fulfills your needs weather its PvE PvP or RP. ( kinda self explanatory that one )

Statement: “The game is boring!”
Nuance: after playing for over a year.

If you only spend the original purchase cost, you’ll get plenty of hours of fun out of it before it’ll get “boring”. At that point the game will still update frequently for free, so you might get more out of it at any given point in time.

It’s worth the purchase price as it’s b2p not a sub game.

I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody as the list of thing’s that I don’t like is growing longer and longer.

And they don’t seem to listen to us.

Yah, at this point there are much better AAA F2P games out there. ANet wanted to be like them and compete with them, and well, thats what they get. Unfortunately horse they have is not much in that race.

I’m sure there are better games for YOU to play, but you seem to spend a lot of time here, on the Guild Wars 2 forum. I’m not sure why you’re not off playing those games…oh,. maybe they don’t exist.

Actually I’m sure for certain play styles there are better games than Guild Wars 2. There just aren’t any better games for other play styles.

Okay background as quickly as possible lol.

Played guild wars obsessively for 4 years straight, was amazing at it and loved it. Them a friend swayed me toward wow. Found it a bit more versatile and it was fun to try something new, so that eventually won me over.

When guild wars 2 came out I was SO excited, but I only played for about 2 weeks before quitting. It was nothing like the old game is known and loved, and I was already built up in wow.

So now I’d like to start guild wars 2 again, but I’m debating whether it’s even worth it. Is there even a large community anymore? I’m on gate of madness at the moment and I feel so lonely even though it’s a high population server. Is there end game content that makes it worth starting the game?

It’s hard to get the motivation to start, because I have no clue what I’m doing and I don’t know ANYONE who plays anymore.

I was frustrated because I got so good at this game and invested so much time, and then they just rip it away and throw us into a new game that we have to learn all over again….

Anyone have any advice?

It is fun to level up different races, but once you reached world explorer it becomes a very pointless game.
dungeons are bad,
fractals are ~OK if you have static guild group,
WWW- very server dependent… the only thing that can keep you in gw2.
living world is the epitome of what is bad in this game.

since you already bought it, give it another chance.

I don’t think this game is trying to compete with Lotro at all, nor should it, Because I didn’t enjoy Lotro enough to keep playing it and I enjoy this much more. This is a much better game for me than Lotro…and I do mean much better.

gw2 is a very fun game but it enough unlike other games that the similarities might be confusing to people starting out.

The best thing is to just approach it as a totally new game and to go from there.
Explore the world, stick your nose into interesting places, follow the event chains and talk to npc’s.
It is very easy to immerse your self in the world.

It is also very easy to fall into a grinding mechanism that is not needed and sucks all the fun right out of the game.

Play with an open mind and find and do the things you enjoy and it will give you many many hours of fun.

Try different classes and race combinations and see what works for you.

As for the population I have no idea about your server but mine has pretty much people everywhere doing all sorts of things.

End game is a very strange MMO idea.
Here you can do exactly what you have been doing because of down-leveling, or you can wvw, pvp ( you can do that from the start) get achievements, work on a legendary, bis gear, play the Living Story, do dungeons , jumping puzzle, guild missions….
Basically whatever floats your boat.

so you already have it- why not try it out?

I would say you should definitely try it. You already bought the game and there’s no monthly fee… if your PC can handle it then why not? Its all about finding what you enjoy doing. Sometimes it amazes me that people are so negative about this game, but if it inspires improvements to the game then it really doesn’t work against the playerbase to act that way I guess.

A piece of advice, you should never come on a game’s forums to ask if the game is good. It’s like going into a communist gathering and asking them what do they think about capitalism.

But if you baven’t got to level 80, should could give it a try. For me, I almost quit the game for TSW because it was just so boring, then I got to level 80 and it became rather fun. Half the game’s content doesn’t open up to you until you hit 80.

OP I assume you’re here because you want to find a reason to play. Honestly the forums are the worst place to get advice from other players. I played GW1 for 5 years and though it was an awkward transition, it’s a good game once you realize it’s not the same game.

As someone said, forums here are used as a platform to complain. I suggest you find yourself a good guild. That’s a very important aspect of getting the most out of the game. And take your time. Start a new character maybe and enjoy the leveling process instead of catapulting to 80 as fast as possible. Send me a PM if you want to play with some good people.

If you have already “bought the box” then there is no reason for you to NOT go back again. It doesn’t cost a thing to try again.

You are more than welcome to contact me in-game and I’ll hang with you (as long as you’re on a NA server) and show you the good things I have found. Add me to your friend list. I am Ashabhi in-game as well.

If, after a while, you don’t like it, you can always quit. In fact, you can quit, come back, quit again, and come back yet again and it won’t cost you anything more than the original box, unless you wish to spend more in the gem shop, that is

I would say it is worth a try, this MMO feels very different from all the rest and it takes some time to get used to.

Once you get used to it though it is amazing, and content every 2 weeks (actuall content as in new dungeons and new places to explore that is playtime worth for many days) will keep you busy :P

But yeah, a positive responce from me. The game is good but these forums are full of people who just want to complain.
Complain about easy content and then complain about hard content. Have even seen people complain about too much content.

So yeah.

I think the best aspect o the game is… if you’re good it really shows. You can solo a boss when your other 4 party members are dead. I’ve had many times when afterwards, people were very thankful I was there to carry them and I was happy to. I try my best to keep everyone alive but sometimes it’s just not possible and you gotta finish it off yourself. Most other games, this isn’t as possible, especially in trinity based systems since a core teamwork is required. Here and there we still get to shine for example, an off tank summon pet or melee dps off tank when a main tank dies or a healer dies and the dps goes into support.

You can’t judge the entire game by a doing of someone. Sure, this is ugly but it’s not even a fraction of the entire things under GW2.

OP can even ignore this when deciding whether to play or not TBH…

I hadn’t seen that.
This says far more about the community than Anet imo. It might have been ugly, but far far more vengeful.

GW2 isn’t a GW1 redux. It’s a storyline continuation with an entirely new feel. If you like being able to play with people and not have to worry about getting 2 levels ahead of your friend or content becoming trivial once you hit max level, GW2 is for you.

Ignore the people saying “there’s nothing to do at 80.” They’re burnt out from playing 1500+ hours. Throughout the whole of leveling, you get to roam the world doing hearts & DEs, as well as dungeons as they become available. At 80, you can run all of the dungeons, as well as fractals (progressive dungeons. You can also take part in WvW and PvP from any level. Though, you’ll be better equipped at 80 for WvW.

most responses to questions like these on the Forum will be people who quit because they think ANet peed in their cornflakes but still pollute the forum with incessant complaining about subjective issues and conjecture. Find woodenpotatoes channel on youtube. Just watching his lore videos makes you want to play.

^I also follow woodenpotatoes, bogotter and dulfycleric on youtube. They always keep me updated on what to play or what I have missed. So my general opinion is watch all those streams to see if GW2 is one of your cups of tea.

Honestly speaking “Everything you loved about Guildwars”…..isn’t in Guildwars 2..

If you enjoyed WoW or time gated tread mill clones like WoW you probably will be ok in Guildwars 2.

I didn’t like WoW and I do like Guild Wars 2. The grind is completely different. Have you even played those other games you’re talking about?

This.

Except WoW and most F2P WoW clones do it much better.

In GW2, you can literally spam #1 for loot. True story.

I enjoyed world of warcraft but not paying for it.
I enjoy gw2…. but there are some aspects I do not like:
1. Anet is sketchy and their refund policies are bs.
2. End game? does not exist. They are working on raids but lol let’s be serious…. this game will take forever. 13 months ago they said they would release guild halls and we are STILL waiting for them to do that.
3. There is a gear treadmill regardless of what they say, and the gear treadmill is for everyone (even the people who completely suck… which is fine but all the content is categorized for bad players leaving the skilled saying “wtf”.
4. The hardest thing in-game right now has no reason to be played: fractals above 28.
5. A lot of players are missing in maps.
6. People transfer for wvw reasons leaving some maps deadbut over 1 hour wait on tier1

The game is bloated right now. A lot of zerg, a lot of currencies, ascended gear/treadmills…arenanet shifted from their core.

Karma is as abundant as air, and as useless as the Kardashians.

In gw2 you stay in place and watch the auto attack animation while drinking coffe.

SOOO ACTIVE.

Go into a dungeon with that kind of playstyle and you will be destroyed.

No, not really. That’s exactly what I do in every area of GW2. Except I’m spamming 3 on about every one of my weapon sets (thief). Totally active gameplay, lol.

There is nothing amazing about GW2 combat because the skill system is garbage, it has a ton of potential but they haven’t done anything with it.

Now if thief had GW1 assassin combo’s it would be a ton more active instead of spamming 1 button forever. Would be nice not to be confined into what skills ANet deems us allowed to use also. I have a useless button on every weapon set that I can’t change out.

Someone really compared WoW to GW2 rotation… ?? Clearly you haven’t played WoW because the effort to get your DPS going is about a billion times more than GW2, it’s not especially difficult but in comparison this game has no rotations just spam whatever.

And on topic.. if you’re a GW1 fan I would suggest not disappointing yourself, it’s pretty much the exact opposite of GW2 and ANet have ignored every concern the vets had with this game and added a ton of grind, vertical progression, and add to that it is still missing the most basic of features that GW1 or any other MMO had/has.

If you like blinding particle effects and being a legendary garbage collector go for it.

Back to WoW, make GW2 fun please.

Don’t expect gw2 to be anything like gw1 because you will be severely disappointed, Gw2 has it’s fair share of positives but they are far outweighed by it’s negatives.
